I noticed the same gearing issue with my 796 monster, almost NEVER used 6th. Once I changed the front and back sprocket it changed completely. I'd recommend going down a tooth at the front with ANY Ducati, seems to make them happy
I have the same year model. Have owned 30 to 40 bikes, from dirt bikes to GSXRs. And like you, I put up with the little things because it is such a cool, great, and fast bike. I haven't even considered selling it.
I have owned my Diavel for almost three years (new in January 2013). It is too noisy mechanically. It ran shite at low revs (under 4k) until I put a Tuneboy to it. Really the only time it is any sort of fun is when you are basically breaking the law. It is damn near impossible to cruise on. Typical Ducati it is a one trick pony. Fast. I have tried for three years to love this thing but there are days where I am out on it but just come home early 'cause I'm getting more and more jacked off the longer I ride it. Yes, it overheats in traffic (even in winter). The header tank leaked cooling fluid and was replaced under warranty (eventually, after a couple of visits to the service centre). Yes it is too tall geared when stock (I went lower for traffic work). It eats tires (and you can only buy one brand / compound of rear) in around 7000kms. Mine needs it's 24000km service now...($1300 please..FFS) & I have retired it to the back of the shed 'till I can be fucked riding it again. My first and last Ducati. I have never had to work so hard (unsuccessfully) to love a bike and failed. No, I am not a troll, nor am I kidding.....Glad you are enjoying your Diavel. May you ride long & safe.
+albymangled It definitely is a love it or hate it kind of bike! I guess as I mainly rode the Diavel in short bursts on back roads I didn't get as annoyed by it's drawbacks. At least you can say you honestly tried, mate!
I swapped from Vmax 17ü0 to the Diavel last weekend - first time I swapped with my buddy. What can I say... we both were happy to be back on our bikes. I am used to light weight nimble bikes as well (I have a SV650 as third bike) so I could handle the Diavel whereas my buddy was totally overdone with the weight and size of the Vmax. After that trip he said that it was brave of me riding the Diavel. I said no, it was brave of me giving you the Vmax. The only mode the diavel behaves like I expect from a bike with 150+ hp is in sports mode and there it is useless to go below 3500 rpm The Vmax pulls from 1500. Even 50kph in top gear (5.) is possible. That is the cruising part of the Vmax. If you go beyond 4000, the Vmax accelerates as hard as any superbike, that is the superbike part of the Vmax.
I dropped a tooth in the front 2 weeks after i got my 2015. That upped the rpm in all the gears which made it better for city and hwy driving. Im with darnz on how fun this bike is though. Love it!
+Joey Sawatzky I never even thought of doing that! That would make this bike so much easier to ride. The biggest gripe I have is the gearing around the city. I'm seriously considering doing this now! Thanks, mate.
I've not seen many vloggers with such great scenery as this, I would certainly sub to the channel if you started vloggers regular, easier said then done I know. Anyway thanks for the reply, i'll make a note of the location if I am ever lucky enough to get to visit, regards, Paul from the UK.
Yeah a 14 tooth front sprocket is the best value upgrade for any ducati I've owned. First thing I do now. It makes the bike a lot easier to drive day to day.
Not a huge motorcycle guy but since I've been looking at getting a diavel ... This is the first review out of very many where I just loved listening to this brotha .. I mean fuck... This dude gets what people wanna hear ... His review alone sold me on this bike... You should do reviews on cars my man.
Hello :) I rarely comment on anything but here I must say: Please make more of these videos. You have a beautiful bike in a beautiful country with nice roads and scenery and your voice is calming. The fun you are having is actually coming through the video. I wanted this bike for some time now but after your video I really want it :) Keep up the good work. Trust me if you enjoy doing this you would sky rocket as a youtuber and I would gladly subscribe if you'd make content more frequently. Cheers and have a great day :)
I did a ten things response to Downshift83 about my 2011 Diavel. Having the bike for five years made some things stand out like a sore thumb. Swapping coolant helps with the temp. Honda coolant from the dealer seems to work well. Drop a tooth on the front sprocket and you'll be pulling in sixth at 70kph. Also helps to retune with Tuneboy. I can ride down to 2500 rpm smoothly after Tuneboy. Stock fueling sucks to meet emissions and sound BS. Then again, maybe ditching the flapper valve in the exhaust also helped with my low end. Stock pillion is very wide, flat, and thin. No way to help that unless they wear padded shorts or get a different seat. I think they named it Diavel because the devil keeps nagging you to go faster Faster FASTER every time you ride it. Hellish fun.
what does "lugging" reffer to? I'm seriously thinking of getting this bike and I understood everything ok and not ok with it except the lugging part. .english is not my mother tongue so help me guys
+brutallbiker Lugging the engine just means riding with the RPM too low and it makes the whole bike shake. The engine is working harder than it needs to to keep the bike going.
Great review Darnz, cheers mate. I picked up the same bike a couple of weeks ago, 2014 gen 2. Just getting to know the beast. Not sure if you still monitor the video comments, wanted to ask what wheels you have fitted, as a they don't look like stock.
Bro.... you do realise both the front forks and the rear mono shock are fully adjustable... at a turn of the knob...literally! Also on the pillion seat, every single passenger Ive ever had on my 2014 (had it since new) has remarked that it is hands down the most comfy pillion ride they've had, and believe it or not with my missis literally having an orgasm just sitting there on one particularly amazing ride soooo..... its hard for me to draw any negatives regarding the Diavel pillion seat ...lmfao!!!! Anyhoo.... enjoy ya ride bro ....stay safe and stay upright !!! Chur
Yea mate I tried all sorts of different settings with the suspension and even had the Ducati mechanic dial it in to what he thought were the most suitable settings. Those front forks were just rock hard! Haha I can only pass on what my wife said about the pillion and she didn't like it compared to the other bikes she's been on. Thanks for your comment!
yes beautiful machine and a joy to ride daily. in sport mode you really need to lean in before rolling the throttle or be prepared for your arms to be stretched ;)
If it doesn't like being below 4,000 rpm, what's the point of it? It's supposed to have lots of low-down torque? Or is this the old model? I thought they'd sorted the low-down lugging problem. How does it pull from 2,000 in top gear? I don't see how with an engine of 1200 cc upper revs performance and low-down pull need to be mutually exclusive. My B-King revs like mad, but will pull out of a roundabout in 6th gear at 1,000 rpm if I want.
The point of it is to go fast! The torque doesn't really kick in until 4500rpm. Drawback of using a superbike engine in a road bike I guess. The low down lugging has been sorted with the new XDiavel's variable valve timing engine but this engine doesn't have that. It doesn't pull from 2000rpm at all! The bike would be shaking itself to pieces and probably be close to stalling at rpm that low!
Hi Mate, I’m in Perth, just bought a 2013 Diavel Stripe. Do you still own your Diavel? If so It would be great to catch up for a ride 👍🏻. We have a holiday house in Albany also, good place to ride.
theterrible1 Thanks mate. I have fiddled with the suspension and dialed in the settings that Ducati recommended for comfort/touring and it was still quite firm and jarring on less than stellar roads!
Your Termi system came with an ECU update, right? And it still shudders like that? That's the main reason I didn't buy a 2010 Multistrada, I cannot deal with the shuddering at regular cruising RPMs. I have a CBR600 that's been jetted and it's super smooth, I can't bring myself to spend more than 10k for an engine that requires babysitting. The new Multi is OK with the DVT, but it's $20k.
+aluisious The Termi system came with a Ducati Performance ECU map. It doesn't do anything to help the low range fueling though. Some people hate it, some people call it character! Just have to be a bit more mindful of gear selection is all. I'm going to be testing the new Multi next week. Very interested to feel the difference.
Just bought the strada version after 3 ‘nice’ BMWs, last one the S1000 XR which is quick..but the Diavel is so much more at mid range and handles so well. Great to hear about the vibrations being normal, I thought the bike was misfiring, great to hear I’m not the only one to struggle moving up to 5th or 6th...unless you are in 3 figures (mph) ..thanks mate, great video
Have 2015 red carbon… just like looking at it in the garage…. It is definitely more of a power cruiser than a naked sport bike. No wind until about 120 MPH, great torque.. Diavel makes any road fun but my Tuono feels much faster and better in the twisties….
+back fire Hey there. I run Termis on mine with the cores out and the sound is like a race bike. You can feel the power pulses passing through your body. It's really great. With that said, between wind blast and the exhaust I wear ear-plugs inside my helmet..Plus I live in Texas where evidently no one cares how loud your machine is. Many places would probably not be so tolerant..It's that loud. You can scare the shit out of Harley riders...
"Slew tha fook dooooown ya' deeeeeeck...!" Hahahaha great man nice charisma and a welcome break from the stiffs here in the land of apple pie and vanilla ice cream..... Totally subscribed, also considering the Diavel or the MT10
You talk too slow. More info, less time wasting. Professionals don’t have time to waste. I don’t want to watch you cruise around, we ALL have bikes and ride.
So 7 years later, did you ever change that front sproket?
I noticed the same gearing issue with my 796 monster, almost NEVER used 6th. Once I changed the front and back sprocket it changed completely. I'd recommend going down a tooth at the front with ANY Ducati, seems to make them happy

My mechanic (ex ducati) said that is a simple solution. Get your suspension settings right. And that is all you really need to do to it.
Very nice bike, even better is that beautiful place you live, so lucky to have such great roads with hardly any traffic.
The south-west of Western Australia is a beautiful part of the country! Thanks for watching.
I've not seen many vloggers with such great scenery as this, I would certainly sub to the channel if you started vloggers regular, easier said then done I know. Anyway thanks for the reply, i'll make a note of the location if I am ever lucky enough to get to visit, regards, Paul from the UK.
cool review, had me smiling as i watched, and looking forward to getting my 2012 Diavel !!! can't had to give it ia twist.
thank you youre the first to say it cruiser it is not muscle bike it is vibrations are its essence !
Yeah a 14 tooth front sprocket is the best value upgrade for any ducati I've owned. First thing I do now. It makes the bike a lot easier to drive day to day.
Cool video won't get ride of mine ever ,even 5yrs later best bike ever
tuneboy will make the low RPM very smooth...it did great on my 2015 Diavel Carbon

Nice video! Lots of feedback.
I have a Harley and thinking about moving to a diavel. I do a lot of cruising and your inputs have been of value.
+Alan Gouvea Thanks a lot mate! You should definitely come across to the Italian side!

Absolutely loved the review! Thank you for sharing the experience
Shit!, Am I seeing things? Another Darnz Vid? Awsome man! Welcome Back!
it's a damn good & clear crystal video ... may i ask what camera it is ??! ... GoPro 4 ??! ...
+Gery Revandra Thanks mate! Yes I used a GoPro Hero4 Black for this video.
+The Darnz ah, i see ... does you use built in microphone or add on microphone ??! ...
man that place looks awesome! great bike as well
Thx Darnz, some nice Diavel contemplations! I'll get mine next week ;-)
hamsmoeltje I hope you love it as much as I love mine!

Yeah you're back! That bike is incredibly sexy. Love watching you guys ride on the left side of the road, trips me out haha, Texas rider right here.
How many km’s you getting to a tank?
Great review Darnz, cheers mate. I picked up the same bike a couple of weeks ago, 2014 gen 2. Just getting to know the beast.

Have you ridden a XDiavel? Which do you prefer?

Is it stock exhaust?
What’s ur opinion on exhaust note ?
i admire your taste in italian bikes
Really enjoyed your review. funny and informative.
Great review! This is what I'm looking for, thanks m8 , now I can go get it 😆

theterrible1 Thanks mate. I have fiddled with the suspension and dialed in the settings that Ducati recommended for comfort/touring and it was still quite firm and jarring on less than stellar roads!
Hey mate. Can you do a test ride on the 2021 Devil s quick shift an more

There is no way to get out of 2nd gear in Norway on a Diavel.
Would this be a good bike to start on?
Yes, IF you are smart and cautious. It accelerates at one G. It fits me like a glove. You need brains not experience.
My Goldwing does 100 kmh at 2,000 rpm
Great review.
I am getting mine soon
Can this be a first bike.?
Go straight to the top. A home run without worrying about using the bases. A wicked bike. And cool as you would ever need.

The termi exhaust is like music in my ear canals

+enntense Hey I'm from Texas as well! Houston and I also wear ear plugs for longer rides on that thing. Tried once without them and that was a mistake
I'm in the clear lake area :)
+enntense Me too! I think I've seen you before! You ride the access road on 45N?
Maybe on Hwy3.
Any problem with parts falling off?
+jitterball No. No problems at all from my bike.
That's good then, ride safe:)
Do you still have it? Has it been reliable ?
Mine, with a service every year (I don't do big kilometers). It has never had a mechanical problem. And it's over ten years old.
funny, i use to do security at the lord forest, disco bunbury back in 1991 lol..
How much does it cost?
+Nadee Tharanga In Australia: About $25000 for the bike. The Termignoni is about $3000.

Haha vibrations going right up your 'date'
Go straya!

Anyway i got to life/ride with the diabolo in hell planet.......also why not this bike........its reality !
Get to the friggin point man' yaawwwwn!!
You talk too slow. More info, less time wasting. Professionals don’t have time to waste. I don’t want to watch you cruise around, we ALL have bikes and ride.
Sell it and buy a scooter if you only ever do 100kph.. you are too scared of the coppers to use it..
