- Join Ryan Callaghan on a quest for ducks in part of America's Heartland - Kansas. Weatherby's Tyler Grethen, Cal and Snort work big water for late season birds. Patience, scouting, numerous relocating setups, and a helpful change in weather conditions bring the ducks in tight and plentiful. Waterfowl wits and gear are tested, but in the end a cooler full of duck and goose meat is rewarded. Presented by @yeticoolers and @FirstLiteHuntingApparel.

Any time anyone from MeatEater makes waterfowl content I immediately drop everything and watch it!
Bro same
Glad i'm not the only one
Haha same love it when they go Duck Hunting
Same.. I dont even waterfowl lol
It's usually painful to watch but I watch it anyways.
Legend has it that they're still waiting for the cameraman to get out and help push lol
I have to admit, I enjoy watching the dogs work as much as I enjoy the human hunters doing their thing. Hearing Cal describe his Snort training across all the MeatEater content gives me a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into a good hunter/dog relationship. I've had zero luck getting my wife's cat to do anything remotely useful.
😂
As a lifetime Kansas resident and waterfowl hunter I can confidently say this video captured 90% of what waterfowl season is here lol
"We're so limited on what we can hunt, public land-wise." Welcome to Kansas gentlemen. Lived here all my life and barely have a pile of dirt to hunt on. It's really cool to see that you guys came here, though. Love it.
Isn't that the truth. Lucky to have what access I do, but it's dwindled to maybe 10% of what I could hunt 20 years ago.
Same in TX. Very disappointing.
Hunting, deer hunting especially may be tough in Florida but I there's more public land than I could ever possibly hunt. Been looking into other states as Florida is just getting too damn crowded and expensive and had to completely cut states like Texas because there really is no public land at all.
Yeah I live in south central Kansas. Luckily we have a reservoir a few miles from my tiny town that is all public land.
@@fernandocarvallo9135 Texas is full of opportunities. Just different opportunities than you'll find in the western states. Everything along the coast is begging to be hunted for waterfowl for example. Lots of TPWD land, USFWS land, and public water.
Some tremendous fishing too. Just not public big game that's worth a ton. But to be fair, while there are a lot of deer here for those of us fortunate enough to have friends and family with ranches...none of them are particularly amazing in stature.
snort is just the cutest pup, more snort content please!
The slow days are part of what makes a good day so special!
You know it’s gonna be a good episode when snort comes along
quick, you still got time to go back and edit that Weatherby jamming. :)
Everytime Cal screamed SNORT!!! Kept thinking he was scolding it..
Dude looks pretty warm and cozy but Ryan and Snort appear to be freezing their butts off.
Any video with Cal, heck yah! Missed the cooking portion of the episode. Good dog Snort!
Been hunting ducks and geese in Kansas for years now. This is a perfect example of what it is like. Lots of sitting and second guessing even being out. But, it can be great if you give it a try!
That second morning sounds like almost every duck hunt I went on growing up 😂
Breaking ice to setup a spread! Any duck 🦆 hunting story that starts like that will usually be a great 👍🏽 day of hunting!
I think its time for Snort to have his own podcast.
my most favorite part is watching my dog love hunting. he was born for it. i dont have to watch ducks come in because i can peak over at his eyes, they are always to the sky. the dog is a machine in the water then loves to cuddle on the couch with the fire place going after a hot shower. hes grey now on the fetcher end but each grey hair is for every bird hes fetched. think of every north western bird a dog could fetch and hes done it. from starling to chukar, hes got a hair for it.
Always amazing content!
Good stuff! Glad you made it to my neck of the woods.
Absolutely fantastic ❤❤❤ Great job
By far my favorite outdoorsman show! Just wish i had access to more of your full videos.
Thank you❤
Welcome to Kansas!
Really nice calling!
More snort and cal please!
So excited for fall turkey to end and it to cool off for ducks
Ah man! Awesome episode. I was expecting a full-on cal cooking section though!
Great job showing the world how to sky bust!
I'm not even a hunter, don't own a firearm & have no desire to start hunting but I can't get enough of this content! I love it. Is meat eater releasing any Snort shirts anytime soon? Im an artist id love to make a piece of art for some snort shirts
NE KS born and raised. As a kid we hunted duck on a never ending string of ponds, know one decent sized farmer rancher, you are covered. I am wondering what body of water they are on. It’s flat enough it’s either el dorado lake or out west of 35. Granted we were turds who would never do anything but jump ponds, no waiting in the dark and cold, but I would venture to say private permission is the only way to go.
That is my home lake. Guessing this was 2022. It was a tough around here last year. Come back and I'll put you on the X. Guaranteed
nice birds
Must have been at the northeast part of the state to find any water. Pretty dry here everywhere else.
Need to come on down south and let us show you how to get them hard shallow spots with a mud motor.
I could’ve told them what to expect in Kansas cmon Cal 😂😂
I'm here for snort!
Loved seeing you guys in the area. Which lake were you on? Not La Cygnes Lake is it?
LETS GO
Not very many ducks and geese coming down yet here in Northern Missouri. Curious what gun oil you use on your semiauto shotguns in the Kansas cold?
Definitely need a Oklahoma duck hunt
No way. No birds here. Stay away. Please.
I come for Snort and I stay for Snort.
Looked like Clinton lake going off the shot that showed what looked like Bloomington park Clinton is a kinda tough lake to hunt at times definitely better lakes in Kansas come back and try another lake around that area good video
When will that weatherby be available in typha?
These boys followed the yellow brick road over the rainbow and got some ducks
Quick question I know labs are water dogs i have one myself but how well did the dog in this video do with colder water. Idk if the vest was just a float for the dog or if it also added a little warmth
Definitely to help them keep a bit warmer.
Next time bring a fishing net 😂
So,when are you guys going out and hunt on yhr Columbia River?
😊
We need to get the dog a wet suit or something cuz he’s freezing 🥶 😂
Yep, no good hunting spots here, Montana is way better. I’d just stay up there 🤣
4 use turkey camo
How about flying a drone around to scout?
Is it legal in Kansas to shoot from a moving boat? Or did Cal anchor? Curious.
As long as the motor is shut off and progress from the motor is stopped it’s legal.
I imagine it can be a matter of opinion when natural drift takes over from motor propulsion
like most states the motor must be off and movement/progress ceased, anchor not required
Copied from the KDWP website:
ILLEGAL METHODS
Sink boxes, live decoys, baiting, electronic calls, and pursuit with any motorized conveyance or sailboat are illegal. When hunting from a motorized craft or sailboat, the motor must be turned off or the sail furled and progress ceased.
Nothing mentions anchoring the boat. This year, good duck water is scarce. Most of the ponds around me are dry or 6 to 8 feet low, just like the lakes and reservoirs.
I enjoy hunting but anyone remember when it would help put food on the table especially when times get tough now hunting takes food off the table most of the time
Hunting big water but no water behind you always puts them on the fringe of range. Shoot 6X and get one sometimes two...but often none. But who cares...as long as there is lead (tungsten) in the air there is hope.
6:23 first shot ?! Cal, my man, what bird were you looking at 😂😂 although im elated for Snort, im sure I heard 3 shots lol
I don’t think that was Cal shooting there!
Kansaa aint Hell but you can see it from there.
🇧🇷👍
What lake his this?
Snort in port! A dog with a job.
What kind of duck is that at 20:59?
Enjoyed the episode but I only saw a life preserver for about 30 seconds. PFDs are must haves for boating in the cold, wind and dark.
Hate seeing that kill switch unhooked…
Cal, who made the duck call you are blowing? (White one)
Cal is using one of Phelps Game Calls waterfowl calls in this episode!
SnortEater
No cooking? Fail
First
Obviously not shooting a Weatherby SA08. Mine wont cycle and basically is a single shot piece of junk.
Mine took some time to start cycling well. It’s been doing better this year, though.
Should have hit me up. I’d of let you hunt our private land water in south central Kansas
I can take you up on that offer haha. Got plenty of fresh east coast shrimp to trade!
Call is not the sharpest tool in the shed!
For some reason I cannot stand the sound of a duck call even though I am a duck hunter. Probably due to the over use and unrealistic nature of it.
Patience not Patients
you turn off the robo ducks an i will watch with out them you may not fire a shot
Why don’t you use your emergency kill switch lanyard? Especially since you are hunting in freezing conditions it would be prudent to connect the lanyard to your person. It should be used anytime you are underway. I’m sure you wouldn’t want any breaking of basic firearm safety rules in your video. You shouldn’t show unsafe boating practices. They can be just as deadly.
That short sided article Callaghan wrote regarding dogs in Rinella’s small game book, while I kind of get what he was saying, made him seem like a dick. He came off as being a privileged asshole who discounted the hard work and years it takes to train a good dog. Never been a big fan since.
No cooking? Low energy
Yeah, beautiful bird until you killed it. Someday you'll understand.
3.40 that DOG needs proper food ,he is lacking in some mineral
LOL, excuses excuses all duck hunters are crybabies Real hunters just we don't film we just killed ducks
