    I never realized that an untimed muzzle device doesn’t need a crush washer or a lock nut. New learning!

    For those about to comment on ft/lbs and why a suggested amount of tension isn't stated, here's something to think about. Firstly, for those who just want a magic number.. its usually around 15 ft/lbs... However, the torque of a standard muzzle device which either requires timing and/or a crush washer would be dictated largely by the crush washer's material, and/or the material of the muzzle device or barrel and so giving a standard isn't particularly viable. What might work well for one device, will ruin another; and thus giving any form of specificity would have to be case by case. If that doesn't make sense, I'll elaborate by example. If your muzzle device/flash hider is made of aluminum, but the barrel is steel, then you could easily strips the aluminum threads. The same is true with stainless vs steel

    You guys perfectly torqued your flash hider (with crush washer btw) on a 6.5 Grendel upper I got from you. It was on snug, but I was able to hold the barrel with one hand and remove the flash hider with a wrench with a bit of effort. I put a thread protector on the front and now I'm ready to hunt with it. Your products and attention to quality always impress.

      @@tdq6449 If you don't have access to a longer handled wrench or a long breaker bar, go to the hardware store and buy a two-foot long piece of PVC pipe with an internal diameter large enough for the handle of whatever SOCKET wrench you own to slide into it (use a standard socket wrench instead of an armorer's wrench). The PVC pipe diameter should be the smallest you can find that will still allow the wrench handle to fit inside it. Also purchase a (open end) crows-foot spanner that will fit your socket wrench (either 1/2 or 3/8 drive); typical A2 flash hiders use a 3/4" size spanner, but measure your flash hider to be sure. Attach the crows-foot spanner to the socket wrench, put the spanner on the flash hider flats, slide the wrench handle into the PVC section enough so it won't slide off under load, and give it a counterclockwise turn. Be sure to push on the PVC pipe "handle" at a point farthest from the barrel. You're basically creating a longer moment arm, which greatly increases your mechanical advantage. With a long enough handle, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to remove the device, assuming no heat-resistant thread locker was applied during installation.

I would also be interested in testing of your spiral Flash hider against a four prong flash hider to see which one is better. If your spiral flash hider turns out to be better I will have no problem purchasing multiples of those. Thank you for your time.

    So is it ok to do this with the receiver vise block as you do here? I was told its better to clamp the barrel to keep from putting pressure on the barrel nut as you tighten or loosen. Thanks for your help.

    • @blueeyeddevil1
      @blueeyeddevil1 Рік тому

      Yes, it's better to clamp the barrel, assuming you can safely and effectively do so. Securing the receiver when torquing a muzzle device means you put rotational forces on the takedown/pivot pin holes and risk exerting a shear force on the barrel index pin. That said, because thing A is better than thing B doesn't mean thing B is bad. In this case, if the torque applied to the muzzle device is relatively low, so is the danger of damage to the receiver. The vise blocks that have both an upper piece and a lower piece (one on the top of the receiver and one on the bottom; the sandwiched receiver is placed in the vise 90 degrees sideways and the vise jaws clamp on the two vise block pieces, squeezing the receiver in place) distribute the forces better than using only one on the bottom of the receiver like you see in this video.
