  • Tuned goes to Sonoma Raceway in Northern California on an invite from TRG Motorsports, who have begun campaigning their new Aston Martin GT4 race cars. We get some hot laps around Sonoma and find out how wonderful it is to drive the racing version of one of our favorite Exotics.

tuned is about modified or customized car. This is a street car turned into a race car. It counts.

Tuned covers anything that isn't a standard road car. We've done a couple race cars per season in the past, and we will continue to do a couple race cars per season if we continue forward. This car is a modified street car. It rolls off the assembly line like all other V8 Vantages and is then turned into a race car. That counts.

I got a chance to work with the Multimatic Astons at Road America this year. These cars are crazy fast but trust me you don't want to damage one. They lost one car in a crash and couldn't afford to repair it. Then the other three cars cracked windshields, fortunately one of the drivers owns an Aston dealer so they could replace them. Flew down a few years back with Mr. Cameron and my father when they were still big into Porsche. He's the nicest man you'll ever meet and the same can be said about the team. TRG and Aston Martin? Sounds like a winning combination to me!

I race lemons and chump car myself. I don't race Astons. But Porsche isn't scouting their next LeMans hot shoe at Lemons races. If you dream of making it in professional driving, you're going to have to get into a semi-professional series.

It doesn't have a torque converter. It is a semi-manual transmission using paddle shifts. As far I know, it is actually the same internal gearset as the manual box.

I took his words as to mean that it's the standard automatic from Aston rather than a proper dogbox, dual clutch or similar, which I like. F1 systems still use a clutch for shifting into first from neutral via paddles below the shifter paddles.
Of course the racing purist in me still thinks just going ahead and competing in lower rung GT classes still provides the best drivers experience as it involves dogboxes or even standard manuals. I'm a single-make race series lover.

I've heard that Prodrive can build the GT4 cars street legal so you can throw on your Wayfarers, Gulf livery jacket, and fine Italian shoes then drive to the track. Change your clothes and go at it, reverse and drive back. Why are other cars cool again?

If I had a chance to drive a car like that on the track, I'd think I'd be able to overlook the slight delay in shifting. If it was a small, nimble car, or a rally car, that's a bit different.

That is the direction full on race cars are moving. By automatic they mean a paddle shifted automatic, a semi-automatic dual clutch system. A human with a clutch just can't beat a machine in shifting times. Hell the F1 systems are shifting the neighborhood of ~0.05 seconds. When you are racing team hunting for those 10ths of a second, semi-auto systems are the bees knees.

  • @GregMuender
