  • Unfortunately, it appears I deleted the sketch portion of this video from my phone/video camera.
This painting was inspired by an on location Pencil Sketch I did in Porto Portugal.
This was also a makeshift setup while I was away from home. The paint tray was much too close to the artwork and left no room for my hand.
Winsor newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine, Sap Green. DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia.
On Arches 140lb hot press, Natural white paper.

Each entry on a project, whether pencil or brush is well constructed from mental images. Placing paint dabs here and there ( sounds simple enough) is part of that process. Absolutely amazing!! Thanks for the insights.

👋 hi Peter, you can take the most mundane tasks and turn them into art. You are a shadow master, the movement in the sheets .. and your manipulation of a brush 😲. Thank you 😀

I really like this one, especially the tip on mixing the two shadow hues (phthalo blue and quinacridone fuchsia) on the paper rather than the palette. I love the bold freshness of this style. It plays with colour and says more with less. Bravo!

I did this one a couple after the East Coast fishing village and it turned out better, though my colors ended up a lot darker, and maybe a bit muddy in a couple places. I'm going to try again with the nice brushes (instead of the ones that were handy, super cheap ones in a set of 18 bought to paint birdhouses). I appreciate you posting these, very helpful.

Fantastic Peter and thanks again for sharing! I see that you used Pthalo Blue and Fuschia for shadows, what a great idea to give and bring vivacity to the sketch!

Loved the subject and painting both. Working petroleum jelly into nylon or plastic followed by Dawn Dishwashing liquid in hot water will remove Pthalo stains. Getting all of the jelly out is easier if you get as much as possible off the bristles or palette with a dry paper towel before sudsing.

Hello Peter, I follow you every day trying to improve my drawing and painting. I'm very new at this. First thing I do is to copy in a scratch paper the drawing to learn about perspectives, lines and so, then I find out my mistakes and go to a paper (don´t know much about qualities) that suits for watercolour painting. I usually find myself improving my techniques. Thanks a lot from Argentina. I appreciate you may give tips por new painters like me!

I really liked this one a lot Peter. I in no way me this critically, but do you ever use cold press paper? I know pen and ink works best on the finer tooth of the hot press. Just curious if you ever used the other. I found a woman on here that paints watercolor on bristol board. I have no clue how she makes her washes come out so clean. I definitely find a hot press paper harder to use. You always make it work though. I love your little touches of yellow ochre. That is definitely a troublesome color for me. Look forward to more as always.
