Amtrak F40PH Locomotives - Where are they now?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лип 2024
- The F40PH diesel-electric locomotive was the mainstay of Amtrak's long distance and corridor train motive power fleet for nearly two decades. With the last F40s withdrawn from service in 2002, what happened to the locomotives that were not recycled for scrap? In this video, I will go through every single Amtrak F40PH locomotive I have seen since their retirement and take a look at their post-Amtrak locomotive career. We will be discussing units that made it into preservation as well as those sold to other railroads. In addition, we will go through the roster of locomotives that Amtrak retained for conversion into cab control cars.

The F40s are some of the most unique locomotives to still be operating today after 45+ years of history. I strongly hope some more get sold back to New Jersey Transit so it can increase the probability of me seeing one. On another note,Tri Rail recently rebuilt their F40s to fit them with a P5 and a midnight blue paint scheme! The F40s on NJT are relatively rare with only 2 still in service, which is why I hope for some more F40s to be sold to NJT because we cannot let the F40PH legacy die under ANY circumstances!!
That would be cool! Thanks for watching!
I have heard of the Tri-Rail F40PH rebuilds (and their blue paint), but I didn't know they had a P5! I will be interested in watching videos of them!
Ye almighty doge
NJT used to have a lot of F40s in storage in Garwood along with GP40FHs and normal GP40s and comet Is, it was a sad day when they moved them out
And the Tri Rail ones are Ex-Amtrak 363 and 379.
F40s are some of my favorite locomotives. They’ve been a part of my life ever since I was born. When it’s time for the cabbages and the other F40’s to be scrapped I will miss all of them.
Same :(
For me are p40
No hate
@@boskobosko1330 I don’t hate you. Everyone has their own opinion. I prefer P42 132 as my favorite.
@@MiddleboroLakevilleRailfan I like P42s and F40s. Not too big on chargers and HSP-46s.
This is the reason I love Metra. F40PH’s galore!
@kellan jaxon ben and zack UP-N has the most I’m pretty sure of F40s

they are the workhorse
The f40ph is one of the best passenger looknose ever built for the American railroad wish we still have them everywhere
Me too. Beside the old cab units the F40's were the best n still are in my book.
Those F40s are soooo classic! These are loved by many Railfans!
Yea
That’s
True
@@A_Lazy_dude The F40s are my favorite diesel locomotive.
The F40 locomotives were and are still useful on railroads in any operational form. I remember seeing the F40PH at the North Carolina Transportation Museum during a railroad boot camp and the museum staff even gave a tour of the cab.
I saw it too. They should at least restore and run it!
The F40PH is my all time favorite locomotive. I am lucky to see them in service in my town still.
Amtrak F40PHs 365, 392, 396, 403, 404 should be placed in Metra Service
5:54 Former Amtrak 231 is the oldest F40 in preservation.
I'm from Hungary🇭🇺, and i love you videos, very nice train videos, thanks😀
Thanks so much!
Awesome Video Mike The Amtrak F40PHs had a great history!
Thank you! Indeed they do!
This video made my day! My family (wife, 5yo and 1yo) just rode Amtrak for the first time 2 days ago, and the F40 known as 90250 was the head. I'm wrapped up in watching and learning all about trains like I'm a kid again!
Ever since watching "Shining Time Station" as a boy I have been obsessed with trains (particularly steam locomotives). I can't tell you the joy I felt from watching my 5yo's face light up seeing 520 up close as it rolled into the station.😃
the lore this video unlocks is crazy
Great video! Meanwhile, up in Canada, VIA Rail still has almost all of its F40s still going. They were all built in the mid to late 80's and received an extensive rebuild in the late 2000s/early 2010s and will most likely be used for years to come. Heck, their P42 Genesis locos will probably be retired before the F40s!
Glad to see these beautiful locomotives still around. Sadly, there could be a chance that several of the non-powered control units will be going away soon as Amtrak recently placed an order for new Siemens Venture trainsets which will be replacing 40% of they’re fleet. This includes the NPCUs as these trainsets will be equipped with cab cars. Since Amtrak’s San Joaquin and Midwest services are already receiving Venture cars those NPCUs will be the first to be retired.
I haven't seen ANY Siemens cab cars yet,so those NPCUs still have life left yet......
Loved this Mike! As always, impeccable videography in multiple regards.. quality, information, camera angles... You know you're old when the trains you rode in your youth are on their second life! Or retired. I remember when Amtrak was created. Thanks again Mike!
Many thanks to Mike for his many hours of research and videos to back up that research. Your F40 history wlll live on forever.
Great video, Mike!
4:00 90221 was seen from the Texas Eagle. It’s super awesome to see these F40PH NPCU locomotives still being used for Amtrak. Just imagine if they were all painted in 50th anniversary units!

This is a really cool video. I really like the history of these F40PH units.
I’m hopeful that one day just like the F40 one of the P42s by Amtrak will be preserved

Great vids and catch
AMTK F40PH 308 and F40PHRs 310, 370, and 382 were purchased by Metro-North, rebuilt to F40PH-3Cs, and renumbered to 4909, 4910, 4907, and 4908 respectively. These units still run strong on NJT and MNCR trains out of Hoboken and compliment the other GP40s on both railroads along with NJT F40PH-2CATs 4119 and 4120 and MNCR F40PH-3Cs 4911-4914 which are ex-NJT units.
The fact that Amtrak never did anything with Engine 210 saddens me
We could have had 90210 doing California Service
Thanks Mike for all your F40ph research. I find it quite fascinating.
The F40PHS Are one of my favorites Trains in USA, Also Awesome Video Mike i am really gonna miss these F40PHS before they get scrapped soon I really love them on The K5LAS horns were the greatest in Trains I hope these F40PHS get repaired.
TRE in Texas recently got two rebuilt f40ph for their passenger service. They're still reliable locomotives
Great video mike! The F40ph were very successful locomotives apart of Amtrak. At least some get to look for another future in a different railroad.
I also love the F40PH locomotive but I wish they didn't retire and I also wish Union Pacific purchased F40PHs for their passenger trains.
CSXT has two P40PH, painted in the old B&O paint scheme.
F40PH, and they have 4 of them, all ex-Amtrak.
12:18 I downright miss every old AMT f40ph im happy 2 of em went to tre. F40 is my fav engine, i remember em real well for over 12 years of superb service with amt in montreal. I saw em haul everything from comet II, rtc-85 "go-karts" to 310 and 293 doubleheading a 10 car train of bombardier multilevels. A f40 hauled the first ever multilevel train i ever took. This vid gets a big fat montrealer's seal of approval.
14 Amtrak F40PHs were rebuilt into freight locomotives for the Canadian American Railroad (CDAC). 459 went to the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad as the slug mother for ex-Amtrak road slug 227, while 461 was rebuilt for excursions on the Iowa Northern Railway. CDAC's F40s used for freight service are classified as F40M-2F, while IANR's F40M-2F is used for both excursions and freight service, and is classified as F40MPH-2F.
Im glad to say ive seen these in service in person throughout the last 7 years.
Amazing video and great content! I Love the F40s! Thanks for all these videos that I Love! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this "where are they now?" episode on my favorite locomotive model of all time.
Trinity Railway Express has acquired a pair of rebuilt f40ph's and one has just been painted
They own them now?? I did not know that.
@@bazis98 your thinking of 310 330 those were sent back to LTEX TRE purchased 2 completely different ones

Awesome video Mike! I hope to see 281 in Sacramento on day. You should do one like this but with The F59phi’s
All Ex-Amtrak F59s are in service with Metra, so there’s no point in doing that.
👀 Cool • Railroad history for Amtrak • Cheers from the Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Thanks for putting this together
You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching!
A classic passenger locomotive
Indeed!
Great video! I have a question. Have you ever filmed trimet max light rail trains in Portland Oregon? It's my All time favorite light system.
Thanks! I filmed it once briefly many years ago.
Well I just got started railfanning max in July since last year.
The system has grown over the past few decades. When I was growing up in the Portland area, it was just the Blue Line and then came the Red Line going to and from PDX and now there's even Green, Orange and Yellow lines. I will always remember it for being the first light rail system I had experienced.
The max is a light rail system in America of time travel.
Glorious engines ... Good vid , thx for sharing ...
Of course this is uploaded after I went to see a abandoned f40ph
The F40 was a huge part of my childhood growing up in Northeastern Massachusetts with Downeaster and MBTA service! I hope it will remain in active service for many years to follow!
Im just glad to see the f40ph still riding the rails in the modern era of passenger railroading. Its my goal to own one of these locomotives
Along with the Big Boy these engines remain my favorite! The F40's we're definitely made to last and they're still powerful beasts over fourty years later.
I hope they stick around for even more. We love to see it
Hey Mike, awesome video! 👌 you should do another one of these videos but with the dash 8's
Great video Mike. Please make more videos of these F40 please?! Best locomotive Amtrak ever had
Always wondered where they ended up and I knew only a few places however this is more comprehensive. Thank you!
Great episode! Didn't know that Metra 215 and 216 were brought back from retirement.
Yea they weren't
215 caught on fire
Thank you!
One thing I should mention Metra Locomotive 215 has since been taken out of service due to it catching on fire in November of 2018 and has been in storage ever since in the Chicago Metra yard.
Amtrak F40PHs 365, 392, 396, 403, 404 should be placed in Metra Service
@@maas1208ex Amtrak 364 was purchased by metra and is METX 217
There are two more F40’s that came through the TCRY museum in Nashville that are now pulling the tourist train in Panama. They are painted in the Kansa City Southern scheme. KCS operates the Panama Canal RR. Primary passengers come from the cruise ships.
Panama Canal RR has 10 Ex-Amtrak F40PHs.

Amazing Video Mike
Thanks, Jack!
NPCU 90253 is my favorite. Its K5LA is pure perfect. I could never find a more perfect NPCU.
Great video
Awesome video
15:00 did you know that 398 was involved in the Palo Verde derailment in 1995?
Did you know thst the SSL on that train is still in service?
Gotta love the ole 406
My Favorite NPCU shown in this video is 90252. That amazing bell easily solidifies it. 90278 is close behind, and I even got to film that one recently.
As for the others here, my Favorite probably has to be 375. Since childhood, I've owned an HO Scale Amtrak F40, and its number is 375.
My Favorite Ex-Amtrak F40s not here are 363 and 379. They got rebuilt recently, and I need to go back to Florida soon so I can film them.
My 2 favorite npcus are 90340 because I love how dope it's K5LA horn sounds and
My other is 406 because I like that phase 3 paint
I respect your opinion on Phase 3.
Great video! Thank you for sharing! Tell me, are you reading the text? Thank you!))
Thanks for watching!
Yes Mike I would like to see more F40 Amtrak locomotives Also Amtrak Genesis locomotives
Man The F40PH Will Live On Forever
There is Amtrak 90200 fomerly Amtrak 200, was the first Amtrak F40 ever built in the 1970s.
In fact I was just waiting and watching this upload twenty minutes prior on Friday night @ 21.30 our time.
Very good video capture, greetings from Indonesia my friend
Virginia Railway Express F40PH V35, formerly Amtrak 311, was donated to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, North Carolina, by LTEX in 2019.
I miss seeing these on every Amtrak train. They looked, & sounded great. Wish they would kept some of the fleet, & rebuilt their prime movers. Use them for specials, & shorter runs mostly on non mountainous runs, & extras if needed. I think it would of been cheaper then getting the newer P40/P42's. Good video, though you forgot the mention of the Panama units. Also I heard that a few prime movers went to Poland.
Amtrak F40PHR 307 is at the North Carolina transportation Museum but is sitting in storage waiting its fate still in phase III paint
Cool video. ❤️💖🌸
Thank you!
Nice Video Mike
Back in the Summer of 1991 I was given permission into the cab of F40 330 in Havre on the Empire Builder. I was heading from California to Minneapolis to attend a camp near the Canadian border. Knowing Havre was a service stop I went to the head end of the train, & simply asked the engineer if I could have a look inside, & he said "yah you can come on up", so I did. Doubt you can do that today, which is sad in a way.
A few of Amtrak's F40's were also actually delivered to CSX and the Panama Canal Railway.
this is so cool!
Thanks!
Nice!
Thanks!
The Amtrak F40PH is fascinating.
That it is!

The F40s were the best locomotives to operate for my routes on the Atlantic City service WAS to PHL and a few times on the MARC service.
Well I still like the F40ph your video is great!

Interesting there is no mention of TriRail and some of its former Amtrak F40PHs. The rail line currently has 5, all rebuilt.
11:12 that's my favorite npcu
You should do a video like this, but of locomotives from BNSF that at ex-ATSF and ex-BN.
Would you look at that look how much the person that made me love trains when I was a kid grow:')
@CoasterFan2105 Are there any New Jersey Transit F40PH-2CATs built for Amtrak as well?
90229 was also the in phase 4 paint longer than any other F40s, and was also the only NPCU still sporting a P5 air horn while still on the Heartland Flyer
I like those locomotives, it sure they were a strongly reliable locomotive.
They were for the first 2/3rds of their life, then they often times began having problems.
Good video. When all is said and done the F40 is simply the best commuter locomotive ever built. I do not make such a claim lightly.
Amtrak 90222 was the unit most commonly assigned to the Heartland Flyer. Sadly the Heartland Flyer no longer uses a NPCU unit, but rather two P-42s.
Why does the Pacific Surfliner F40ph hit different? I love it
I love F40PHs
In Episode 34 of Train Talk, we’ll talk about all the passenger variants of the GP40 locomotives that are still in service today or have been retired. We’ll discuss the GP40TC, GP40P, GP40P-2, GP40PH-2, GP40FH-2, GP40MC, GP40-3H, GP39H-2, GP40WH-2, RP39-2C, and RP40-2C locomotives as well as what the future holds in store for the GP40-based passenger locomotives. Right, CoasterFan2105?
I would really like to see Metrolink 800 / Amtrak 396 end up at a Southern CA Railroad Museum. It would be a great one to keep here after it's service on both railroads.
Amtrak F40PHs 365, 392, 396, 403, 404 should be placed in Metra Service
Wanna see some F40s in action, VIA Rail still uses them for many Corridor (High Speed) services and it's Cross Country trains
That’s on the list!
