Engines of Metro North Comet/Shoreliner Based Railcars

- In this video, I discuss the lengthy and intertwined history of the comet/shoreliner based railcars. Cars that are based on this design are everywhere in the country and almost every single level railcar in the country is based on them. First, you have new jersey transit which had every model in the series. Then you have metro north who has their own set of shorelines, and amtrak who has their own fleet of horizons. Septa and Exo also have their own fleets of comet/shoreliner based railcars. Then the MBTA has its fleet of BTC-1's and CTC-1's. These railcars are all over the northeastern railway system and still after 40 years, they are the backbone of the northeastern commuter fleet.

Yay my favorite coaches 😍
They don’t get enough credit

I agree. I like them though
Recently MNR 5010 (formerly NJT 5010) was fitted with new technology to clean leaves on MNRs route and I've seen it before. It is now being used on a train called The Laser Train.
Edit: MNR 6131, 6134, 6136, 6143, 6145, 6147, and 6149 used to be Comet cars 5178 (now 6131), 5986 (now 6134), 5987 (now 6136), 5980 (now 6143), 5981 (now 6145), 5982 (now 6147), and 5983 (now 6149). All of them were renumbered in 2009 and 6147 was involved in the December 1, 2013 Spuyten Duyvil derailment and is currently unknown where it is.
Yess, I've been waiting for this. I feel these workhorses don't get nearly enough attention, and it's nice they're getting more in depth coverage here. What a great way to end the series, nice work man!
11:03 Coverted itoo bike cars
Oh what splendid locomotives these are! It is high time I posses one of these. Thank you for this good train video.
Eat it
Hey thanks for the compliment
Great finale to the series! Didn't know that there were comet I bar cars. Good luck on reaching 1000 subs! You're almost there!
Thanks. Bar cars were common, and even though commuters want them back they cost money
Everyone except the people who can make it happen agree
Great video as usual man! Ha! Having a really really bad day! ...And this video really brightened my day! Cheers man!I love all these Coaches!Great videos man! I look forward to whatever you gonna do next!Cheers
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
The long doors on the Comet 2’s were added when they were rebuilt around 2002. Originally the traps could only be opened with the (short) side door already open. The comet 3 and 4 addressed that shortcoming with long doors, and the feature was incorporated in the comet 2 rebuild.
Just a slight correction. The “Shoreliner” Bombardier built cab cars and coaches for Metro North east of Hudson service were nicknamed “Bomb” cars by the vast majority of train crews and mechanical workers.
I worked with MN for 26 years and almost never heard them called Comets or Shoreliners.
When I used to visit my grandparents in Reading, Mass., I'd get to ride into Boston on the MBTA trains, and at the time, they had the CTC 1 and CTC 3 series cars. The initial 4s were almost finished but not ready to deploy, just to give you an idea of when exactly this was. And as far as I know, all the trains at the time had some version of the F40PH locos. Just my little anecdote.
Yes indeed. With these cars being around for so long if they could talk they would have a lot of stories
I know, right? And now it's looking like they'll be adding a new chapter to the saga in Connecticut on the CT Rail line from Hew Haven to Springfield via Hartford.
Edit: so I found out CT Rail got the CTC/BTC-3s from MBTA, not the C/BTC-1s.
They have one of the best horns in the entire system.
Once again,petfect timing
After having a bad day! :D
Glad I can help
Love it nice job
Thanks
Those "Comero" cars look more like Silverliner IV's if I do say so myself.
OMG this is Awesome
Love it ❤️
Oh, and Comet 4 Plus Comet 2 equals Comet 7 (A fan-made Comet car from TVCTA Rail, a fan-made commuter railroad). But, Comet 1's, 1B's, and 3's are sold to TVCTA Rail as well as half of the Comet IV and some Comet V's from NJT to TVCTA Rail. It's not delivery, it's Tom and Ben Enterprises' idea of selling the retired Comets and most Comets to TVCTA Rail.
Great video, super informational. I've always loved these cars as I used to see them very frequently on the NJT river line when I was young. Any idea what kind of trucks/bogies these ride on?
nice video
Thanks
Nice
Thanks
The Arrow IIs looked like the Arrow IIIs the Arrow Is were rebuilt to Comet IB and the surplus Arrow IIIs shells were built to Comet IA
Thanks! I think he should edit that mistake at 4:17, right?
We have some comet iis in montreal albeit made exclusively for low level platforms with manual trapdoors
Alright! Another Metro North Video!
Yup
@@nyrailfan202 Thx for making our spirits happy!
Are there any other locomotive that Metro North used in the past.
There is a list on Wikipedia of them. But I have also covered all of them at this point so look through the playlist
@@nyrailfan202 oh ok
Correction at 4:17: In 1978, Comet IA cars would be produced by General Electric from surplus Arrow III EMU shells. Can you please edit that, nyrailfan 202?
no
I wonder what the shoreliner replacement cars would be?
A shoreliner v? what ever it is I hope the Metro North keep the traditional single level cars and the shoreliner replacement design would be based off of the Alstom comet v design with some upgrades
I guess its pretty common consensus that most Railfans call the commuter versions Comets regardless of the railroad (Except for ironically Metro-North where "Shoreliner" caught on.) Even here in Philly most of us call them Comet or Bombers
Yeah, and it makes sense
Well, that’s the end of another “Engines of ...” series, fist Engines of VIA Rail and now Metro North?
It took 2 years
4:17 *Comet IA
How come bilevels are now catching on in the northeastern states? Clearances upgraded?
The traditional bilevels are still too tall. However hybrid single and billevel cars were allways able to happen. They was just never a need for them. Now they are needed for extra capacity
How long will Metro North Shoreliners cars and NJ Transit Comet cars will keep running? I’ll truly miss them
A while on low demand routes
@@nyrailfan202 I love your content and I hope your channel keeps growing with more information of trains
Wow
Thanks
Here's what I think Metro-North should replace the Shoreliners With (Kawasaki C4). They will be used with the new ALC-42Es as Push-Pull Sets: ua-cam.com/video/A56esBM99WM/v-deo.html

Would love to see a video like this on the NJ Transit mulitlevel cars.
11:02 What is that thing?
Height restrictions cant allow double decker cars in the east. Bombardier: laughs in multilevel. Exo: cackles in comet II, bilevel and multilevel. Amt(exos predecessor)in the 2010's: wheezes in comet ii, leased comaro and comet iii from njt, multilevel, canadian vickers galley cars, hawker siddley rtc-85, bilevel and ex amtrak f40phs.
2:44
Stainless steel?
Weren't they made out of aluminum?
More like "Engines of NJ Transit"
A bit
There's an uncanny resemblance between Comets and MN's ACMU EMU cars.
Just coincidence?
I kind of wish the LIRR had some comets
But C3’s are honestly better
@@nyrailfan202 facts
But then again doesn’t the lirr run 1 or 2 car trains with c3’s that would at least look better with comets even though comets wouldn’t match up with the locomotives
Yea they would look weird traling a DE/DM30AC
12:32
personally i dont say "Spyooten Devil" but the pronunciation has some controversy.
Sadly exo retired the comet II
Does Susquehanna only have one engine on their fleet or no? Cuz if they have multiple, I would love an "Engines of Susquehanna" series!
I think multiple
The shorelines cars are actually comet 5 cars
No
They look more like septa silverliner 4s
