  • 3.23 Might Make Your Ship Obsolete...Temporarily | Star Citizen
Patch 3.23 changes will have an affect on the efficacy of your ships & ability to chase that credit. The cargo refactor, freight elevator, and loading of ships in your instanced elevator are cool new features but may exclude your ship from gameplay loops.

I feel like these cargo changes give the potential for ships with say about.....100-150scu capacity or less to really shine. I suspect the mid range haulers (Freelancer, Cutlass, C1) will find themselves in the sweet spot of efficiency for time per unit of scu. I would hope so anyway as I'd like for those ships to always have value, even after one owns a C2 or Hull C or BMM or any other large freighter.
In a similar note I hope this also adds value to the smaller single seater "starter" ships by having them be able to take small loads of high value cargo from certain locations that is only feasible with them. I would love for my Avenger, Syulen, or 135c to still also have a purpose long after I've moved up to a C1 or C2, for example. I'm really looking forward to these economy changes and how they'll be keeping ships of various sizes always relevant.

I am still waiting to see what the advantage of using a RAFT will be. They promised that once we had cargo loading in the game then RAFT owners will have a big advantage that makes up for the poor capacity but I am not seeing what it can be. Take any ship that will carry three 32scu crates and it will be quicker to tractor it from the cargo elevator into the back of the ship than it will be to lift three crates from the elevator then arrange them exactly in the right place under the RAFT in order to then lift them into place. Perhaps having in one man just putting the crates in roughly the right place while another man inside the raft uses the ships tractor to move them into the correct place will speed things up but having two men working on loading the other ship will also speed things up. All I can think is that the tractor beam on the RAFT will arrange the boxes instantly and lift them with one push of a button, ie the boxes just have to be dumped roughly the right area in any configuration to work, but I still can't see that giving a significant advantage.

I seems logical that at large ports where you can store a large ship like a Catapillar, that it could be loaded full of cargo over time while you have it stored. So you would land, store your ship, you'd wait around in the station for a given time while it's loaded, then when it's ready you'd call it back up and bingo bango, she's ready to go. Otherwise, cargo hauling is going to turn into "Box-Stacking Simulator 3000".

  • @mracicot
    @mracicot 5 місяців тому +9

So, yeah, cargo… wow, it’s sure exciting… But I really don’t want to spend an hour manually loading larger craft just to take it somewhere and spend an hour off-loading. One fix is to get other players to help, but at what cost? Another approach to a fix is to make sure the game mechanic includes automated/robotic help…and that doesn’t need to be animated initially, just accounted for in maybe a 100unit/minute load/unload rate, or perhaps 100 units per minute per cargo access door or elevator. For places that ‘do not support automated cargo services’, cargo should magically load/unload until cargo manipulation is a lot better and a lot more reliable. I can suspend my need for reality to accommodate development time to make it ‘more real’.
Then again, let’s not get TOO buried in the details, CIG. There IS such a thing as too much reality in a science FICTION game. “Just because you CAN do a thing does not mean you SHOULD do that thing.”

@@MastaSquidge The problem is that there could be a loud minority of players while the majority just switch to other games when they dont have enough fun playing and dont even bother telling others about it.
That could lead to the devs getting a false picture what the majority of players (aka the ones that make up the bigger part of the company's income) actually prefer.
I dont say that its the case with SC but it could be. At least for me all the little animations that are just a bit too long, "extra" activities etc. add up to a noticable amount of time i dont play the game or are required doing something i dont like doing IRL either.

For one, AI is banned in the empire (literally in the lore); secondly, the Argo Cargo is literally meant for ship to station/ground loading and unloading...real ships in the real world use smaller ships to go alongside bigger ones to offload cargo, so this isn't unrealistic at all...also, this literally happens in space in real life as well, small cargo pods are brought up to the ISS using a rocket delivering cargo, and then it's sent back down with trash and stuff the crew needs sent back (like experiments).

As far as cargo is concerned, without a real economy in place and not much to spend the ayoueecy on, shipping in small quantities works best for me. I run with a MAX or as I fondly like to call her, The Greazy Keys. I can get in and out of cargo destination points of most types reasonably quickly and can shoot my way out to an OM marker if things get sketchy. Not a ton of cargo to loose if I can’t pull the ole brick out of trouble neither. I have made a ton of creds with the MAX in small 120 scu increments and that’s fine for me along with other gameplay loops.

Yeah it's going to be fun seeing all these people rage on Spectrum about how they deserve to solo their larger medium ships as well as large/capital ships because "I paid real money for it". 😂 CIG never said that buying a ship means you buy the capability to use it...that would literally be pay to win, and Star Citizen is NOT pay to win...nor will it ever be (getting ships is more of "pay for convenience to avoid some grind").
I've legitimately had people try to argue with me that AI blades and NPC crew will let them solo things bigger than a Connie, and I'm just sitting there laughing because CIG (primarily Chris Roberts) has specifically said that won't be possible because it'll be too expensive and you won't have really any efficiency or capabilities at all to use these larger ships properly. Sure, you can PILOT any ship...it just requires one person to fly a ship; but using it for its purpose solo...? Nope.

Chappie, this game is being built as a life simulator (they literally used those exact words, so I'm not putting in my own bias here)...this means elements that are mundane will be put into the game at an increasing rate. It's not meant to be tedious just to make people like you mad, it's meant for GAME BALANCE (and as a side effect works well for immersion). Keep in mind this doesn't mean they're making a realistic game...a life sim is purely about FEELING like you're living a life in a game, not necessarily that it's a 2 to 1 representation of how an actual life would be.
Also, like the other chappie said, larger medium sized ships as well as large/capital ships are NOT meant to be soloed...even with NPC crew and AI blades. This is, again, about game balance...solo players will not have the same capabilities as groups of players, and while they will be able to do all gameplay careers...it will only be at an entry level. Also, don't worry about ship sales...people have been saying "this year people are going to stop buying ships" literally since the beginning of the project and people haven't stopped yet

Dude, the first iteration is literally automatic loading but with a timer (talking about cargo commodities)...when they talked about freight elevators for 3.23 they meant with your INVENTORY items, not commodities. So, trade will literally be the same except there will be a timer and you'll just have your ship sit there. How many people have so many things they want to get out of their inventory that it would be an actual hassle? Not many.
Also, the game has always been built as a life simulator...people keep thinking it's a a combat action game, but it's never meant to be that...we only have a lot more combat elements due to things ported from the combat single player game Squadron 42 that they're working on at the same time. Anyways, these life simulator elements aren't about "disrespecting your time", it's about providing game balance; if things are too quick and too easy, it destroys the value of doing things in the game. This is the same rationale for why travel will be slower in the future as well, and star systems will be a lot bigger than Stanton...some journeys will take more than 30 minutes, maybe even more than 50 minutes in just a single star system. If you can't handle this then yes maybe you should leave the project

Also, it's not meant to needlessly inconvenience you, it's about game balance. If things are too easy and too quick to do solo, then it destroys the value in those actions, AND it destroys the value in playing with groups.
CIG MUST balance for group play, therefore, because if they don't then there's no point to play in a group. Keep in mind though that solo players will be able to do all careers, but at the ENTRY level...you're not meant to be Mr. Moneybags, and you're not meant to solo ships bigger than a Connie even with the magical AI blades and NPC crew (hope you weren't thinking they would allow you to solo big stuff, because it's not happening).

AI is banned in the lore, and CIG have explicitly said that they are building a life simulator. This means that mundane elements are going to be added to the game in ever increasing amounts, like cargo loading. Why? It's for game balance, because if things are too quick and too easy then it destroys the value of doing an action...in addition, it destroys the economy, and in more important terms - it destroys potential satisfaction in getting something done. People don't play Dark Souls because it's easy, they play it because when they finally beat a boss after so many tries then it gives them the ultimate satisfaction knowing they WORKED for that win. Same for Star Citizen, you get through the mundane "day to day" activities, and once you complete your task/mission you set for yourself it feels all the more rewarding because you know you put in the time and effort.
Now, the reason SC is being built as a life sim has any bearing on this convo is because immersion is also a factor...having the physicality involved in even something as mundane as loading/unloading cargo makes it feel grounded and real. In addition though, CIG also wants group play to be a main focus of the game, not only that but they MUST balance the game around org/group play to allow for such gameplay to have meaning and value; if things are balanced around solo players and allows for them to do everything by themselves, then it ruins the need to play with a group.
CIG does not want the above, therefore larger medium sized ships as well as large/capital ships will NOT be soloable as it will be too costly and impractical (not to mention super inefficient) to use them as a single person EVEN with NPC crew and AI blades (almost especially with NPC crew too since they'll require regular wages...solo players likely won't be able to afford more than 2).

Here's the problem with this thinking. Gamers (in general) are always looking to maximise their investment in the most economical way. Because our (leisure) time is valuable, particularly if you're an adult and work for a living.
DigThat and every other SC'tuber have multiple guides on their channels explaining in detail how to do this for various game loops.
Here devs are talking about making a "game" as horribly realistic as possible. Who here works a manual handling job, and wants to play a simulator of those tasks in their spare time?
What I foresee is that unless the rewards for such time wasting are unreasonably high, no player will do them. It will be a feature no one except first timers or extreme role players will engage in.

Ah, the old "I don't like a specific gameplay style therefore no one else likes it either". Not everyone enjoys the things you enjoy. Also, it's about gameplay balance...they have to slow things down, it makes what you do meaningful and increases the sense of satisfaction when you get the things done that you want done (missions, activities, etc). Also, they need to balance around group play, if solo players can do everything not only quickly but easily then it destroys any purpose in playing with others (which playing with others right now is already worthless in many aspects). You don't seem to understand the game they're building, but that's fine...you either adapt your expectations, or leave the project

It's kinda weird how people don't understand some ships will need a crew and think that's crazy. Like how an airbus a380 has a single pilot and no crew, or a cargo container ship has just the captain. Or a train has just a single driver (and not even relief crew). Automation goes a long way, but it cannot replace people entirely. It also removes a lot of player agency and cost/ benefit.
CIG are giving people reasons to play together. Which is great. Does that mean we might not be able to efficiently solo everything? Yes. AI and NPCs may help fill some of the automation, but some ships are just going to need actual people to run well. As a solo pilot, who sometimes flies with others, I have zero problem with that. As a Banu MerchantMan enjoyer, it terrifies and excites to even consider loading that thing up and have crew help me run it. ^.^
It's great to see this growing out and it's an exciting time for the game as a whole. Buying a big giant ship (or earning it in-game) doesn't impart any right to run the thing solo for any given game loop; never has.

It's why I am hoping these changes will keep single seaters and medium size ships relevant still. Feels bad because the single seaters and medium ships are actually my favourite types, but as of right now there is no reason to stick with them.
It sounds to me like these changes will change that and the single seater and medium ships will start to have a lot more value for solo players as there will actually be content and missions for them to do and not necessarily need or even want to move up to the bigger ships, which is good.

So, you see, I have the hull C that I bought to maximize my time cost per unit of cargo, the guy over there said that the more cargo I put in my ship the less interesting it will be, this is totally against the logic of logistics. What kind of donkey thinks of a system that literally goes against the logic of cost per volume. The Carrack was literally the ship I liked the most in the game and even now it's the most useless, it doesn't do anything well and what it should be exquisite to do doesn't exist yet even after years of its release, and now they're going to change the system that it benefits from the most before even reviewing it. I've been playing for 4 years now and in the last year I've seen seriously questionable decisions implemented. I complain because I love this game and seeing so many recent decisions out of logic annoys me.
