    To have so much restraint takes alot of control. I love that she doesn't push her voice too much in terms of projecting in her full chest voice. Her head voice is very strong, but she controls it so well. I just love this woman ❤

    I actually got to see her live recently in concert, & she still had the scratch in her voice in various parts, but i feel like she chooses to do it for a more stylistic effect. I love it personally, she has a beautiful voice and tone 🤍

    I really appreciate how long you let the song play before making comments. I hate when reactors cut in the middle of a phase or talks over it. You take a whole verse in before stopping to give relevant advice. Meanwhile the smiles you give while the music plays says everything that needs to be said lol. Great review. Yebba is AMAZING

    I believe that the “scratchiness” could also be intentional. You hear it on many of her live performances and it could be a tactic that she uses purposefully to imprint a unique signature on her songs.

  • @andydevid
    @andydevid 3 роки тому +23

    Yeah I love those little scratches... I don't like calling it imperfection, to be honest... But if we do call it that, I would say that it is the imperfections that make it perfect. Frankly, I think that if it were all "perfect" it would probably be too technical and not convey any emotion...

    I think the distortion in her voice has something to do with her being a smoker BUT while i don’t think she should smoke, it doesn’t seem to affect her ability at the moment. I just hope it doesn’t affect her long-term

      Preferred the character of my voice when I was smoking tbh. Much prefer my health now I don't. This is art, not science, right? That's why early 00s Shiina Ringo, childhood esophageal atresia and later smoking habit and all, was such an incredible vocalist.

    5:04 I think your guess might be more qualified than mine, but I have had slight vocal fold damage from harsh metal vocals. I think Yebba might have some damage on hers. I can even hear it slightly in hear regular singing voice. And she didn't have that in earlier recordings. To me, it feels like the vocals folds are a bit "frayed" or something. And like the additional sound produced is akin to when you blow on a leaf of grass in between your fingers (lol). I might be projecting but I'm very familiar with that sound because I experience it every day. My voice behaves a lot like hers when applying more rasp as well (the parts pointed out in the video).

      Yeah, the 'distortion' is deliberate, all the 'effects' when she sings are deliberate, everything is precisely orchestrated inc as far as the Vowels they use to match the song, very precise and all done on purpose match and the BG Singers were just so in space, amazing! Look up My Mind....You'll never see a more emotional and real performance, a week after her Mother took her own life, very powerful and exteremely talented Singer, probably one of the finest in recent times.

    This is so cool to hear a technical vocalist describe what’s happening for those who just have natural singing ability. Yebba grew up in Christian church in America so she sings from talent and spirit. It’s almost like a Jazz ensemble in her vocal cords. But to hear that broken down is mind blowing. Thank you for sharing.

    Aretha Franklin is one of her biggest influences. If you have some time, listen to her music to get a bit of perspective on that stylistic raspiness. Alot of gospel singers do this to their voices at will/intentionally.
