2019 Hyundai Veloster Review

  • Charm isn’t a trait that you can just engineer into a car, but when the Veloster debuted back in 2012, it was chock full of it. For 2019, Hyundai is vowing to keep the Veloster quirky, and that’s a good thing.

    People loved the last-generation Veloster because it looked so different from all the other small cars on the market. It could fool people into thinking it was a sporty hot hatch on one side, and on the other, it looked like a family-friendly vehicle. Its asymmetrical design won it a lot of fans. Back then, the Veloster looked fun, but it wasn’t actually that fun to drive. The original Veloster gathered quite a few complaints: the transmission needed work to feel sharper, the suspension was a bit wobbly and fussy, and the steering feel was non-existent.
    The new-generation Veloster has not only resolved all of these issues, but it did so without messing with the original elements that made the car so interesting.

      carrillo100100 that's something that I'm not allowed to know, and my dealer could get into shit if I did. If I had to guess... Pretty much about the same as a turbo ultimate with a dsg. Hyundai knows it has to come in well under the Civic type R to get anywhere.

    I have to add that i really liked the look of the first-gen car but this second-gen vehicle looks more refined inside and out, but has the better driving dynamics that the previous version didn't have!!!!!...It's unique and doesn't look like anything else on the road, which is why it's so cool!!!!!

    Neat review, AutoGuide! I can't wait for the new 2nd generation Veloster to hit dealership lots... I'll surely be reviewing one! They definitely seem to be very promising and much improved over the 2015 model that I reviewed.

    The main shortcoming I noticed of the Veloster is the cheap materials used in the interior. I sat in one at the auto show and the materials used throughout the dash sets Hyundai back a few years.

    recently me and my friend who despite the fact that we are only 13, are really into cars, were out looking in parking lots that usually have a few nice super cars or sports car (Once or twice a year a hyper car if were really lucky) and he saw this. He thought it was a 2 door car until he looked at the other side and said it was stupid because it only had 3 doors. When I went home and did some research on it and found out that the 3 doors is so people dont step out on the road and risk getting hit by an oncoming car.

    Hyundai continues to impress those who have an understanding of a well engineered vehicle regardless of brand!!!!!...The honda, toyota fanboys are crying in their milk with this second generation Veloster which by all accounts checks all the boxes for a great, fun, sporty car that drives and handles well. And when the Veloster-N debuts in the fall Hyundai will have their most serious effort yet to challenge the likes of the Volkswagen GTI, Golf-R and others in the hot hatchback class for supremecy although with 275-hp, it will clearly have more power!!!!!...ha,ha,ha

    Yo! AUTOGUIDE.COM PLEASE HELP ME OUT! I have been on pestering customer service AND Hyundai service centers to tell me what specifically the 'Sport' function on a 2019 R-Spec veloster actually does since its a manual. All they can tell me is it tweaks steering and engine noise. They didn't even know about the overboost until i got one fairly knowledgeable guy in the service center...but even he doesn't know what else it does. Where are you getting your info from? You know more than Hyundai does at this point. Can you help me find out what the mechanical changes are between sport and normal? Especially with regards to throttle and turbocharger response? CAN ANYBODY?

      Luke Hoisington you can in the US, Turbo Ultimate manual comes with that kit and more. If you want basic climate, even the R spec has both. I'm sure they'll offer it in Canada as well, assuming you're Canadian. Spec name may be different though. Weird that companies change that per geographical markets...

    ehh..never really been a fan of Hyundai "torque vectoring" (which is abs based). It's ok and can tighten up turn in... but send any power through the front wheels, and it's typically ends up being a little messy.

    • @techpappee
      @techpappee 6 років тому

      skifree never really been a fan? 2018 Kona was the first vehicle to receive brake torque vectoring at HMG, 2019 Veloster is the 2nd. It's new to Hyundai motor group. Another Albert Biermann inspired change.
      A quick Google search will prove that 😉.

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 6 років тому

      To me It's just not as good as any of the other systems. It's computer based (and unless you are mclaren and have a dedicated ECU for this) it will NEVER be as fast as true LSD, it can't fully lock up like clutch based LSD's and it cannot do torque biasing like helicals. then exactly what is the advantage of a brake based LSD other than saving space and cost?

    • @techpappee
      @techpappee 6 років тому

      skifree all true, it's not as good.
      My comment was more towards how can you be a fan of somthing that never existed before? Hyundai just started using break torque vectoring. Stinger, I30 N and even Veloster N have or will have a proper mechanical LSD. It's all in the price tag.
      Mazda, Honda and others uses it as well, break torque vectoring that is. Hyundai is not alone.

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 6 років тому

      I think I said I wasn't a fan because I'm not a fan of any of these brake vectoring systems. I Tried it on the wrx, and it just feels artificial.
      also which honda has it? The only sporty honda that's left is the type-r and the civic Si. and those do have helical (I own the Si).
      As for Mazda, I think you you are mistaken it for GVC (G-vectoring control). That system doesn't use brakes at all but cuts engine throttle to shift the weight over the front wheels and gain more traction, and only works during turn in, where an LSD is for corner exists. Mazda's sportier cars like the Mx5 have a mechanical lsd.

      skifree Not worth the debate. I concede.
