An Ampere GPU and Dell SFF PC's PCIe x4

  • Since using the aged Dell SFF PC - Precision T3420, I saw many opinions that 70W GPUs (no external power supplying) won't work with Dell SFF PC. In the previous video, I already confirmed that the GTX 1650 dual-slot works well with open-ended PCIe x4. In this video, I confirmed it again with a more powerful NVIDIA Ampere GPU - the RTX A2000. This time I also did a test to know how much the performance lost comparing to the PCIe x16.

    I just bought one because a site said this fit in the OptiPlex 7070 SFF - which it does not fit in the x16 slot in case anyone sees this! Only single can fit x16 but double only in the x4. I tried in the x4 slot and fan turned on but no video. Motherboard wouldn't POST. Found you have to go into BIOS first and set video to internal GPU ONLY, not AUTO. and already have the latest NVIDIA a2000 driver installed. Its working well in my machine. I have 200w OWRN7C PSU. UserBenchmark has this at average 70%, I got 68.1%. It runs almost as good in the x4 slot.

    Thanks for sharing this. Running an RTX A2000 in an Optiplex 9020 SFF. . . because I didn't think it was completely nuts that the GPU costs much more than the rest of the PC seeing what is achieved by doing this. Have to say, love it! The card pumps. To get more you need to buy that Intel NUC or something for a whole lot more money. So NOT completely nuts. Its a SFF Optiplex that can run RDR2 and Cyberpunk with DLSS at over 60 FPS smooth as can be. The slower slot does not seem to make much difference at all. Less than 5%. Very cool using a riser cable to test the 16x slot and post the Heaven numbers. Very cool.

    I just tried, and it works just fine, a 130 bucks OptiPlex 5070 with a 110 bucks RTX A2000 (and a 5 bucks adapter for video output). Don't forget to set up the bios to boot on NVIDIA card only, and then to install the drivers (I had a flickering issue before installing the drivers properly, maybe a conflict with the og intel gpu). So no need of a new PSU, 200W is OK for this card (associated with an I5 9500 with a 65W TDP).

    I have an Optiplex 7060 with an RTX A2000 in the x4 slot, and it scored much higher than your results in your video with the same settings -- 1959 vs 1615 in scores and 77.8 vs 64.1 in FPS, 32.8 vs 8.6 in min FPS, 172.2 vs 129.4 in max FPS, which is also much better than your x16 scores. My computer has an i7-8700 with 6 cores. That means CPUs have great effects on the benchmark scores. For Unigine Heaven Benchmark, you might be somewhat bottle-necked by your CPU with 4 cores. With a much faster CPU, the difference between x4 and x16 will be greater. It will be interesting if you test for GPU benchmarks like that from Passmark, which perhaps depends less on CPU.

      Great info, glad to see the RTX A2000 still has more headroom. I will try it if I have another chance. Thank you very much.

    That A2000 sounds like an old hard drive with bad bearings...

    • @metallicaofhammet
      @metallicaofhammet Рік тому +3

      Yes, caused for dry bearings, if you clean and add new lubricant the blower fan runs a lot quieter.
      Saddly mine only lasted 2 weeks, a week ago the blower fan refuses to run no matter what i did
      So i ordered a new one but now i now what need to do to silent card.
      At 80% its a the same level against a traditional fan (i had a GT 1030 before)

      Have this card in Lenovo Thinkcentre 710s which has 16x PCI at the top, so full speed.
      Yep, original fan noise was very bad as plenty of these cards from eBay were used for mining.
      Drop of oil under the sticker helps to keep noise so low that even my former rx 6400 (sapphire) was lot louder.
      In fact, I forgot to turn off wake from sleep in Windows and at night when I woke to go to toilet I was barely able to hear the card and felt asleep again
