I worked at Supercuts for two years and they expect you to do 20 minute haircuts! For somebody that is a perfectionist like me it was hell! Once I was able to do a fade in 18 minutes, they insisted that I hurry up and do four cuts an hour! Precision, checking and finishing work out the window! All it is is money money money to them! They could care less if they’re going to get repeat customers because they know it’s a chain and someone else will come. I pride myself giving great haircuts so that I could build my clientele. But most of the people I worked with just cared about getting “heads out the door” that’s why I opened up my own salon and I can take all the time I want with each client, play the music they like and give them 100% of my attention.

Yes Sharon! I feel all of what you just said to my core. I worked at Great Clips, Sport Clips and Fantastic Sams. All chains for most of my career. I went full time as an independent stylist and salon owner in January of this year. Even though it's stressful and tough to build clientele at times, I don't regret it. I will never work for another chain again. Good luck to you in your salon!

@@taraduddy7687 thank you so much! Good luck in yours too! It is stressful and I work alone but I find that quality over quantity is what I like to do best. I give each client a personalized visit for each client. And build up a rapport . it’s much more rewarding for me!

Chop shop 5 min haircut corporations and their $10hr wage for their $18.99 haircut is RUINING pro hair careers imo. Great clips sport clips super cuts smart cuts etc etc etc

I live in Canada qc ,and for a haircut i charge 20s for women and hair colour i charge 35$ and still have my clients complain that i charge too much but at salons they charge way more.
They always want more for less and that put me in a situation that I'm always thinking I'm over charging when I'm not.
Been doing this for 8 years and everyday i think of quitting.
I love my job and it's been my passion but some clients take everything that's in you.

Totally! I own a salon and I charge 17 for a cut and just 10 if they get a chemical service like color highlights or a perm… And I still get people that are shocked that a wash, cut & blow dry is $27! I’m cheaper than freaking Supercuts and my first year I was bullied into lowering my prices drastically, so much so I only made $8000 my first year. It’s incredibly tough when you make your own prices people will haggle you and bully you basically into lowering it. They wouldn’t do that if it was a chain! I love what I do, but it’s so hurtful and disrespectful to haggle and nickel and dime me. I’m a single mom with two kids trying to make a living just like everybody else in this world. I love my job. It’s too too bad the clients get in the way! LMAO.

I understand what you mean as a salon owner myself. My advice is never let anyone make you feel you're charging too much. I've had to face these types of people many times. They say things like I was hoping it would be cheaper. Well, it's not Linda (no offense to Linda's), my price is my price. Charge what you want to charge based on your bills, skill level, etc. The right people will come.

You are not charging enough. Know your value /skill is worth more, especially with the investment in education, tools, products etc.
