  • Today I'm sharing a peek inside my modern and minimalist kitchen. I'm also sharing 8 tips to help you clean, declutter and simplify your kitchen. My kitchen is a blend of cozy minimalist, warm modern, Scandinavian and SoCal vibes.
    For most people, the kitchen is also a congregating area for the home, so decluttering, organizing and tidying up this room will naturally make you feel more at ease, calm and relaxed. And I think you'll soon find the cleaning habits you implement in the kitchen will have a lovely way of spreading into the rest of your home. I hope you enjoy this little kitchen tour, my approach to interior design and my minimalism tips!

    The one I have the hardest time with is doing the dishes immediately after cooking/eating. I get lazy once I've cooked and eaten. But it is so nice to wake up to a clean kitchen!

      I clean AS I'm cooking and by the time I'm done eating I have maybe a plate and a fork left. Sometimes a pot that I clean after storing the extra food I make.

    I had your minimalist kitchen program this afternoon, so that we could both hear it. Thank you. But, last night I had been all hooked up for a sleep test, and my husband got tea ready and cleaned up, started the dishwasher, for which I was very thankful. But as you started to talk about cleaning up straight after a meal, he was in the kitchen, and when I realised what he was doing, he was cleaning the frying pan, saucepan and the gritty stove he had left last night. Thank you. It saved me a job. Anne de Keijzer.

    Love this video. I'm a week into organizing my kitchen and we have very similar aesthetic. I want everything to look clutter free, functional, and beautiful all at the same time. Thank you so much for showing this and I also invested in a whole set of All-Clad pans and Le Creuset dutch oven and I'm soooooo glad. No more cheaply made kitchen items for me, quality overall in the end saves me more money. And yes, I also got myself those spice drawers lol it's beautiful.

    I decided I want to a minimalist. I just gave so much “stuff” to homeless shelters.
    I couldn’t believe how much “stuff”
    I had kept over the years and I wasn’t even using it.
    I had become depressed with my home! Now since I’ve gotten rid of all that “stuff” I no longer feel depressed with my home.
    I then decided to try & find UA-cam videos on how to decorate my home in this manner.
    Your video was the 1st one that I chose to watch and boy did I choose correctly!! Your video offered me my 1st steps to create a minimalistic home!!
    I apologize for the longevity of my message. However, I became so impressed with your video that I had to much to tell you how you’ve inspired me in my goal of minimalism!!
    I have liked your video and I have subscribed to your videos.😊
    Thank you so much!!😊

    Just minimalized my small galley kitchen this morning, what a difference! Now if only it would stay that way! I love the natural look with butcher block and stainless steel pots and pans and have had a few pottery crocks filled with wooden utensils for decades which looks great with a couple of plants. Also, just purchased one of those wooden European dish drying racks which looks better than a Rubbermaid one. That plus a splash of blue and red color and my original art work finishes the decorating. American country mixed with some French Parisian like my red dish towel and an antique looking milk jug that says "Paris" on them. Thanks for the inspiration, too!

    Just discovered you today and I am totally addicted!! I am a Designer from Pickering, Ontario Canada and this is exactly my design aesthetic. Contemporary and warm minimalism. I also enjoy a white backdrop colour in my home with pops of colour to give it some life. For my clients that enjoy colour on their walls, that is great and I specify tons of colours for them in their homes! Colour is a personal thing. For me, I like the simplicity and calmness after a hectic day with all the computer and cell phone stimulation. There is a reason that lots and lots of white is used at Spas. The tips you provided for creating a minimalist kitchen were very helpful. I agree that clearing out the clutter clears out the mind. People simply have too much STUFF!! Duplicates and triplicates of items that will never be used. It is surprising how much space you can gain in your home by simply clearing out all the unused items. I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and have also learned the benefits of removing gluten etc from the diet in order to heal. Anyway, thank you for sharing your fabulous videos..... love your recipes they look absolutely amazing and will be trying them in the coming days. Cheers!

    • @Downshiftology
      @Downshiftology  6 років тому +1

      Thanks so much Deborah and I'm happy to hear that my design style resonates with you (though I'm sure you are far more the expert than me - ha!). It's funny because I always use that spa example as well to remind people that simple color palettes and uncluttered space can be calming and restorative. You'll definitely love a video I have going on my channel later this month which is a tour of my living room. It has more color than my kitchen with grey, camel and even a pop of blue...but in a subtle way. Can't wait to share it! And hope you enjoy my recipes as well! :) x

    • @tweetterbug
      @tweetterbug 6 років тому

      Very much looking forward to the tour of your living room. The colour palette sounds amazing! My design firm specializes in sustainability, Eco friendly design, products and lifestyle. Green living definitely includes creating an oasis in your living space. Yes simple colour palettes and uncluttered spaces are very calming and restorative to your health. I just read an article on becoming paperless, using apps like Evernote, one note etc. I am trying to incorporate less paper and less printing - unless absolutely necessary and keeping documents in an electronic format. Of course everything is backed up in the event of a computer crash. All my documents to clients are created in an online studio, where they can sign off on sourced items as well as documents and pay online. Having less paper supports the minimalist lifestyle for sure. Best of all less filing which is a HUGE bonus.

      @@thesupergreenjudy lol, this is not a "standard" American kitchen. Most kitchens here are small or tiny.

    • @privateprivate8366
      @privateprivate8366 5 років тому +2

      It’s difficult. There is quite a competitive kitchen gadget market out there and some great items can be found for cheap. Plus, yesterday’s hot, new item is often replaced by tomorrow’s hot new item, although you may still find it useful or even attractive so, you might just keep it around.
      For a minimalist kitchen, like in many things minimalist, though, it helps to also have a decent amount of space so, you don’t have to rid yourself of all you’ve worked for. I can see in newer kitchens, they have help with a less cluttered look. They may have high ceilings and, if the cabinets extend all the way to the ceiling, there are more things that can be put out of sight, even if they’re difficult to reach.
      Having a sizable pantry also helps.
      I live in a 1 bedroom apartment and most of my kitchen space is floor space. So, other than “appearing” large, it isn’t actually. It is large enough to look large, but not large enough to stick an island in the center.
      I have a medium sized pantry, when I compare it to most YT videos, but because I have nowhere else to store my household cleaning items, tools, power tools, paints, etc. I’ve rolled in a tall slim rolling pantry, in addition to the shelves that are in there and I stacked 2 CD/DVD organizers, which I cut to the height of the pantry, which holds all of my paints, cleaning, polishing, etc. products. This is in addition to the food items I store on the shelves, in prep for the zombie apocalypse.

    Great tips! I’ve been decluttering and it feels so good! But now I have to get a spiral cutter! Lol One of my favorite kitchen tips: after cleaning and sanitizing my stainless sink I WAX it! Any paste wax or liquid wax will do. This keeps a sink looking AWESOM! Water just beads up and can be wiped away leaving a shiny sink with no water stains! San Antonio has very hard water and the waxing and easy wiping keeps calcium and lime deposits away! I also wax the drainer board of my dish drainer for the same reason... although I don’t continually wipe it off. 🌹

      Downshiftology I stack my two fry pans & two crepe pans on an organizer rack against the back wall of the corner cupboard. They are too awkward for me to nest as they are De Buyer Mineral B Element - not quite as heavy as cast iron but not far off - so I have to use both hands to lift the large 26 cm fry pan out of the cupboard thanks to previously breaking both wrists*. The rack makes the pans more accessible and they don’t take up much room. However, the large pan does spend more time on the stove than in the cupboard. (* Very cold ice (-20C) is a very hard surface to fall on when skating and I did that on two separate occasions.)

    I have a small kitchen but I only have what I need. I dont own any saucepans, toasters, mixers or gadgets. I use my oven every day and I clean it after each use. I have 1 deep frypan which cooks so many different things. I used plastic plates, forks and knives for each meal as I hate washing dishes. My kitchen smells great

    I love your vids and your kitchen (and your recipes and you too!), but I wouldn't call your kitchen minimalist, because you do have a lot of stuff, between appliances, gadgets, etc. What it IS, though, is incredibly clean, well-organized, and neat. And of course from what I can tell you USE every single tool in your kitchen regularly, so you're certainly not overdoing it or hoarding stuff just to have stuff. In any case, your kitchen is absolutely to DIE for!!! 😃😃😃

    Im so jealous of your frying pan.. i used to have a stainless steel one but my food kept getting burned and stuck all the time and here you are popping an egg like no biggie!

    • @Downshiftology
      @Downshiftology  6 років тому

      Most of the time the people cook way too hot with stainless. It's a great heat conductor so a medium heat is usually sufficient. :)

      "The Minimalists" have a UA-cam channel where they upload their podcast episodes - they're not vegan but they like vegan restaurants and mention them sometimes. They're more about "why-to" than "how-to" approach minimalism, but I've found them really helpful!

    I agree on the All Clad. Never have to buy another set of pots and pans for the rest of your life. (Other than that one nonstick frying pan imo) I'm picky with their handles though. I ditched the nonstick bakeware for other options that I can use for dinners and desserts. So tired of worrying about scratches and buying replacements.

    I like the easy to clean, simple cabinets and countertops in your kitchen. Smooth, simple, no hardware makes cleaning a breeze. I wondered if you could tell us what materials they're made from?
    Also, do you have cleaning videos that include how you clean and what products you use?

    Greetings from Costa Rica. Thank you for this video. Lately I've been stroggling with my kitchen. I am a wife of a chef and as you can imagine our kitchen is full and I mean full of kitchen applainces, a lot of them we don't use as often as we though we will, and for some reason we pretty much have doble of everything, two convecional ovens, two or three blenders, including our new Vitamix and so on so for. I've have storaged a lot of our kitchen tools and big apliances, but it seems to be a lot still in our kitchen. although our kitchen its a big master piece in area and storage spaces in comparacing of the average kitchen where we live, I still can not make it look nice, clean and organized. I am comment in this video, because today its the day of cleaning and organizing the kitchen area, which literaly takes me about 6 hours or more to clean every single item in our kitchen. We live in Costa Rica in a rural twon, so there is a lot of dust and un-wanted creatures, so everything has to be zanitaized at least once a month. so here I am apreciating this video of yours. I will start with the cleaning of my kitchen write after I send you this MSG. BTW I apolyze for the long msg. Have a great day.

      @@Downshiftology Thank you very much. I actually love all your videos specially the ones with the vitamix, since I am a new owner of one :) oH BTW. I also decorate my kitchen with herbs and fruits, the plants I pretty much have them all over the house, in and out.

    Hi! I started subscribing a few days ago and have been loving your videos! Thanks for such good advices. I’m currently a uni student and my apartment have a super old (1920s) and small kitchen, which is quiet unfortunate given that I love cooking and I have so many condiments and cookwares. It will be really really nice if you can make a video on how to store things in small kitchen. I think it will be applicable to a lot of others too!
