    Mid drive motors are supposed to have great acceleration and hill climbing ability vs hub motors. I will be putting this to the test in my upcoming videos, for now enjoy the 72 volt mid drive ebike build.

    Almost 5,500km on my CYC X1 Stealth. I went with the full grip throttle. I have also built two other ebikes with the same motor but with thumb throttles. No comparison. The full grip throttle is way better. Especially if you are doing longer rides.

    Encouraging the CYC is working on the noise issue with their mid drives. Noise is why I built with BBSHD. The CYC can generate big power running enough amps through it. But the drapes have to match the curtains. Battery cell discharge capability aka good cells versus cheap Li-Ion cells and battery BMS which can clip high amp discharge saddled with a controller that doesn't allow big amps = a restrained CYC which is capable if everything lines up with higher amperage of 3-4000w.
    I wonder if at some point you will search for another frame that will allow you to place that large battery within the triangle. You don't seem to be much of a pedal guy...I come from a cycling background and so enjoy the combination of motor and pedaling.
    Thanks for sharing your journey with the e-bike community and will be watching as you refine your set up.

    you should add a battery to the rear rack and keep both mid drive and hub motor :)

      haha a dual motor setup would combine the advantages of both motors. mid drive to leverage the torque of the mid drive with the gears for steep hills, plus the hub motor keeps pushing even during upshifts and being more efficient to cruise at constant speed...but also double the weight/cost and reliability issues.
      but if you want the strongest ebike possible, and you have already maxed out the controller for your motor, it. would be a solution. just add a front hub for good measure

  • @michaelsprinzeles4022
    @michaelsprinzeles4022 2 роки тому +5

    Congrats and welcome to the world of mid-drives. To get a speed read out you need to install the speed sensor. Could moving the spacer to the non drive side help with that chain alignment? The CYC is quieter now but any mid-drive with double chains will make noise (even if the motor were silent). I hope you remove that heavy hub drive to enjoy the full benefits of a mid-drive, other than climbing is less unsprung weight in the back wheel.
    Ride on & enjoy;)

      @michaelsprinzeles4022 2 роки тому

      @@Blox117 I'm sorry you're not loving it more. For throttling around hubs are easier and more fun but an equivalent powered mid-drive should be faster (top speed not acceleration) and climb better but using gears is necessary.
      If you're running at 72 volts you need to change your gearing for higher speed. Your climbing and top speed are all governed by gearing with a mid-drive. If you want a higher top speed get a bigger chainring. Before wearing out my top gear I was able to hit 36 mph (only 34 now) with a 52 volt Ludicrous BBSHD, so you should be able to go faster (on 72 volts).

      @@michaelsprinzeles4022 im mounting a custom mid drive motor. i could have gone for this IPM that was meant for a motorcycle, but i opted for using two cheaper ones. these will both be driven by 6kW controllers to the rear wheel, which is a MXUS 5k turbo hub motor with another 6kW.
      basically i am using the disc brake to mount a fixed gear, and the threaded side to mount a threaded brake hub and mount a second fixed gear. the two motors sit above the rear wheel in a rack. maximum theoretical power based on testing is 18kW and torque should at least be 300nm but definitely should go higher like 400.

I heard that carbon steel/carbon fiber bike frames are really bad for ebikes is that true?

    • @devildogcody
      @devildogcody 2 роки тому

      carbon fiber I have heard to be bad for diy kits, especially the hub motors (there are more and more mid drive ebikes being made from carbon fiber however). Carbon steel should be fine, as it is most likely going to be "low carbon steel" which is often used in machining, known to be durable and easy to weld.

    • @devildogcody
      @devildogcody 2 роки тому

      @@stevenmiller9198 carbon steel is still steel, but with a carbon content of up to 2.1% by weight (the low carbon type used in manufacturing is under .25%)...think knife blades, they use forms of high carbon steel. Rule of thumb, the more carbon the harder the steel, but the harder it gets the more "brittle" it gets, but low carbon steel is great for bike frames.
      Carbon fiber is a different beast, it is many thin strands of carbon filaments held together by varying types of epoxy/resin. It has around 5 times the tensile strength of steel, while considerably lighter, which is why it is a very popular material for higher end road/mountain bikes. The issue I would imagine with using such for a hub motor would be it wasn't designed for that amount of torque, and you could end up with cracking between the fibers around the motor mount points. I know that some of the most expensive specialty mid drive mountain ebikes are using carbon fiber frames, so you might be okay using a mid drive diy kit...but still questionable since the diy kits mount through the bottom bracket, while the specialty bikes have custom designed frames the motor mounts into, so I don't really know, just guessing on that point.
