The moment the curtain dropped on the intro to “The Oath” was the moment for which the crowd had reserved all its energy. The curtain dropping and the stage coming awash in light revealed a set not unlike the one King Diamond has used on recent solo tours: a balcony perched above drummer Bjarne T. Holm's kit adorned by an enormous goat-crowned pentagram acted as a sinister keystone to the almost Byzantine archways that capped the steps upon which guitarists Hank Shermann & Mike Wead, stand-in bassist Becky Baldwin (go Becky!), and the Mighty King himself lurked. The set, festooned by the lighted outline of an imposing inverted cross, felt like the evil twin of the Hagia Sophia, and was possibly inspired by the photographs on the rear cover of Don't Break The Oath. If the crowd came to celebrate black masses, they'd arrived at the right place. The King's voice is in remarkably good shape.
The breaks near the end of “The Oath” allowed Ms Baldwin (Hands Off Gretel, Fury) a brief chance to both show off and to honor original bassist Timi Hansen, who was battling cancer at the time Mercyful Fate reformed; lamentably, he died shortly thereafter. Presumably because Arch Enemy has taken off in the intervening years, Sharlee D'Angelo's role has been filled by none other than the inimitable Joey Vera of Armored Saint and Fates Warning, though commitments with the former have kept him from joining the Danes on this trek. The Birmingham-bred Baldwin handled the bass duties admirably, nailing each and every part every time and prowling the stage during this performance with Mercyful Fate, as if she'd been touring with them for years. Fitting, considering she's literally from the very city where heavy metal itself was born.
Mercyful then tore into another classic, the oft-overlooked “A Corpse Without Soul,” before performing their new song, “The Jackal Of Salzburg,” which went over nearly as well as all those well-loved heretical serenades of decades past. In fact, this was the only song in Mercyful Fate's set that didn't predate their early ‘90s reunion. As essential as those first two albums and that debut EP were to the evolution of metal, ‘90s Mercyful made some damn fine records that we love to this day, and my only complaint was too damn short to include such classics as “Witch's Dance,” “Holy Water,” or more from Don't Break the Oath.
As fond as I am of bands who rearrange or improvise over their classics , we absolutely acknowledge that playing songs by the book is usually the appropriate thing to do. You know what we could do without though? Backing tracks. And you know how heavily Mercyful Fate relied on backing tracks during this set? Apart from that eerie intro to the opening song, not one bit! Even the bells heard during the interlude to “A Dangerous Meeting” were deliberately not piped in, and their absence reminded us that this is what metal was meant to be: unforgiving, complex, and 100% live.
The set concluded with another lengthy composition: “Satan's Fall.” And the crowd didn't exactly disperse when that exhausting number ended. King Diamond clearly feels most at home on that brilliantly designed set, and all these decades into his career, he remains one of the most charismatic performers ever to wave the metal flag. His and his bandmates' ardor and theatrics took what could have been a mere rock concert and turned it into a nefarious nocturne, an immersive experience that clearly left fans yearning for more. Disappointment was only felt when the house lights went up and there were no signs of the magic returning with an eagerly anticipated encore. And that merch line still stretched into the auditorium.
King Diamond has returned. Long live the King.

Thanks! Pinned
He was going to do no presents for Christmas as an encore but nobody cheers for him
I wish they would of did Gypsy
The fact that King can still belt out the falsetto-range vocals in his mid-60s is insane. Still singing on key.
What a bunch of geriatric knob-heads.
Totally agree with you saw King Diamond the best listening right now
It's because he's a contra tenor usually they stick to opera. We were lucky.😁
66 years old and he is still killing it.....sounds amazing!!
Killing it is right!
Actually sounds better than rob halford💯
Y’all Trippin this sounds like shit😂
Can't believe he's 66.
That’s my bass teacher up on stage! :) \m/ \m/
Chris you are lucky to have Becky teach you! Future legend
Man I think Becky Baldwin was an excellent addition to the troop. And King Diamond sounds absolutely amazing. One of the best concerts that I've seen televised on here in awhile . Thanks for bringing this to us Scott Perry! Bless you man!
Her bass really stands out in a good way. She shouldn't be hurting for work.
I cannot believe how good King still sounds 40+ years later
@daverichards9141 she does play in band called Fury who tour alot!!! But her ability is incredible
Permanent member since today
I love how he introduced Hank Shermann. Like giving the acknowledgement that he is a fucking legend, no speech or description needed!
He is a legend like the King!
I recently had triple bypass surgery and it’s been slow recovery but when I found out Mercyful Fate touring US .. I had to purchase tickets. My wife said I was crazy, but it was an absolutely awesome show!! I haven’t felt that good in awhile and so stoked that my 15 year old son enjoys same music I have loved all these years and did head banging for both of us during concert 🤘🏻
They have probably never sounded this tight before.
It's so tight. Great sound too
This is absolutely amazing. King Diamond has always had extremely talented musicians in his band, and have always loved his voice.
I can still listen to Mellisa from start to stop. It was the first album that I bought with my own money from shoveling driveways. (I was 8 at the time). I bought it because I thought that the cover art was cool. Such a masterpiece and King Diamond is such a brilliant artist. Thanks for recording the show!!!!
That was my high school jam. Nuns be dammed!
I wish every live official video release from bands would include an option to have a stationary camera with a view of the whole stage like this. Too many live shows suffer from "shaky cam" editing. Drives me bonkers when there is a solo and the camera moves over to the bass player or rhythm guitarist! Great job on this!
Thanks i appreciate your thoughtful comments!
That infuriated Mr at Maiden's show recently. Major guitar solo and what do the cameras do? Bounce around from one person to another to another to another to another... Give the soloist their spotlight, keep the camera on them. It was like the camera crew had never been to a metal concert before. They should at least be given notes beforehand on who gets what solo at which point for each song, and do the soloist some justice.
This is the same way that I take every concert video that I post here- FULL stage. Let the viewer decide where to look.
thats not the problem of the camera crew , its the film editor/ director who's probably an asshole , @@Styphon
Saw this in Sacramento last night. my wife and I were both blown away it was pure awesome. Thanks for posting
Glad you enjoyed it! I am from there, went to High School in Fair Oaks
@@LiveRockMusic we had to travel to see this but are glad we did. Thanks for posting! IMO this is a Metal Treasure 🤘
@@Salty4Reel Hardrock Live was amazing!
I was there too one of the best performances I've ever seen. And I've seen many
Still wired from Brooklyn last night. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to. Stunning. Mind bending. Mind numbing. Drooling on myself. Floor on the ground. Baffled. All hail the King. Almost in tears during Melissa. Corpse shook me to the core. And sorry Priest hellion electric eye no longer holds the title for best concert opener that now goes to MF and the Oath
That's a tie for me! Check my Priest video from the pit
Thanks bud just saw king tonight in Qc killer !!! I wept a few times
@@LiveRockMusic saw priest for defenders and remit down, retribution and nastrodamus
You're comparing fillet with fillet so either one is good
I was there in LA. It was perhaps the greatest show I've ever seen. So awesome! I was absolutely blown away by King and his unbelievable vocals! Especially at his age! The whole thing was like some lovely nightmare that I didn't want to wake up from.
I was sad when it was over, great venue! I wish there was more leg room though
I was there too! Sec 105 row F seats 3 and 4 ☺️ Sooo much fun! My voice is finally back to normal from all the falsetto lol
His vocals are still fantastic I was reading he had a bypass and it actually helped him with his lungs
Man. Thank you for posting this shows in full. You must have lived an extraordinary life to do what you do and live where you do. I enjoy your stories about the shows and the bands as much as the actual concert video.
Thanks that means so much, I am grateful for everything in my life!
Wow double horns up dude. You're keeping the metal community alive. I totally appreciate your time that you spend our delivery Beyond awesome concert footage a band that is completely unique. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was like what the hell I'm almost 50 and there's still Merciful Fate fans out there. But I must confess I'm a bit jealous. But in a good way I seen King Diamond numerous of times but not actually a merciful Faith show. But he always squeezes in Merciful Fate songs. Back in 19 91 I was at the Fillmore in Detroit. And he was doing his conspiracy tour with King Diamond. And Midway through the show he's says do you want us to play some more Merciful Fate. And I was in the front row and I was screaming dangerous meaning. And I was so close he looked at me and then they ripped the intro and played half of the song I was so exhilarated. And I can't decide which one is better Melissa don't break the oath. In my opinion it's like choosing between kill them all our Master of Puppets
I grew up with Maiden, Metallica and Slayer influencing my metal future but these mighty gods sit equally alongside those names. Don't Break the Oath changed my life.
Agreed!
Saw them in Quebec drove 5 hrs !
Quebec was more reserved than being at a Toronto show
Def!
@@korhansoydan hey I'm 56 man these 30 yr old dudes around me were hardly moving here I am fisting, cheering and yelling !!😆😆🤟🤟😆😆
Totally affected my life! I'm 55 now and I still get drunk and false etto all night to the King!
Remember Fate in high school in the 80s. Never would imagine they would be rocking this hard 4 decades later. Always appreciated quality of their work, highly talented individuals. How King Diamond still ha his voice is incredible and Hank still hitting everything like he was a young dud back in Copenhagen. And finally glad for the big turnout and stoked fans.
Same! High school in the 80's ROCKED......Class of 86 what a time!
Same here brother, Class of 1986. @@mightymouse8095
Mercyful Fate has kicked major ass on this 2022 tour. What a truly exceptional live band. Thank you for the upload!!
Fantastic video!!!! Becky plays in one of my favourite bands Fury and she is absolutely killing it on this tour. I really hope fans will go look her up and get into her other projects too because she so deserves it. 😊
Fury rocks. So does hands off Gretel
Dude, she is a beast on that bass 🤘🏻 I loved watching her in Denver last night 🖤
Thank you Jenna! 🤘🤘
Thanks Jenna! \m/
I hope she joins Mercyful Fate and their next album rivals Melissa & Don't Break the Oath.
This is the best concert lighting I’ve seen in a very long time. No flash and trash just because you have the fixtures.
Every move was thoughtfully planned. Great job to the LD.
The band was fucking incredible. Long live the king!
Thank you so much for this. I haven't seen these guys since the '80s and I'm just so glad that you were able to post this.
Glad you enjoyed it! Check out my channels other videos I have some good ones!
Wow, quality of this video is just amazing. Thanks for the killer footage!
You are welcome James!
Absolutely phenomenal recording!

ABSOLUTELY INFUKNCREDIBLE!!!! 💯% So many bands become an awful self parody but this is legit the exact same band... like a time machine!! Thank you for this great video footage! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Couldn't agree more! Thanks!
Copying is a sign of praise. There can be only one lords of darkness
I DON'T THINK MICHAEL DENNER WAS THERE????
@@romanramirez6436 it would have been great if he was there but I read an interview that they had a falling out and King Diamond said "People have misunderstood what we are doing now. This is not a reunion. We are just picking it up again because the stars are aligned correctly now."
Been to many shows over my 54 years this by far was one of the best ever I got to enjoy. Total Pros Mercyful Fate still one of the best bands ever!!! props to Scott for the excellent filming also keep it Metal \m/.
Always keep it metal🤘🏼😎🤘🏼🎸
Just saw them at Kings theater on the 10th. Great, just as the 2019 king d concert there as well.
whoa, this sounds sooooooo good. That drums man!
Thanks for the recording! such a great experience!!!
Any time!
Great recording and performance! Thank you for posting this, really amazing quality. I saw Fate in Boston on Nov 13 and they rocked. I grew up listening to them in the 80s. Saw them multiple times on east coast at L'mours in Brooklyn and other venues after Melissa and Don't Break The Oath. What a treat this was after all this time. Keep on rocking!!!
King Diamond is still in
good shape.. His Voice is
strong, like Years before.
Congratulations.
Better than ever!

Becky did great on this tour. She should be a permanent member whenever the band tours or records.
I agree Andrew!

What a spectacular scene, lights and every member of the band in perfect execution.... amazing King new voice without any dought sounds much better Live than before.... congrats and succes for all the touring, I'm waiting for you in November 11th in Montreal with my son.....
So good!!!
Thank you so much for filming this show. I saw them this summer at a festival in Spain, but it's not the same as in a real concert hall. Incredible sound and fantastic colours.
Our pleasure!
Thanks so much for recording . I was front row! Top 5 concerts of my life.
I bet! Front row rules
Saw this show Monday night in Philly, it was awesome. Saw them back in ‘93 the first time they reunited in Baltimore and was amazed at his live voice. Which was just as good almost 30 years later, amazing.
Saw them in Cincinnati with VIP, and was blown away! King and Hank were the nicest people ever. In our little Q And A, King told us about this creepy time he and the rest of the band were in an old house recording an album and every single one fo them had some crazy paranormal experience. He kept going talking about it so long their "handlers" came out, and King was like " ay i have more to say" He scared then off and we hung out for a bit. Such amazing people both of them.
I can't wait to see them again!!
Wow! A pleasant time warp back to the golden age of heavy metal! You captured all of it with the atmosphere perfectly! Sound and video quality is amazing, and your camera work is flawless! Thank you for the experience, and trip down memory lane! 🤘🔥👹🔥🤘
Thanks! Go see them🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Great show Man!! Excellent job on the filming and audio ,was Awesome casting it on the big TV and cranking it up , Keep it up , really enjoy what you do for us 🤘
Thanks Tim! On a big screen with a great sound system is the best! udio is good with headphones as well
Loved your pre-amble! Got into Fate when I was in college - mid-80s - never saw them live until a couple nights back at UA-cam. Phenomenal show! I was in the center orchestra, row B - walking out I saw Dave Grohl and took some pics. Loved Diamond's stage attire and the crown looks like a cathedral on his head. Phenomenal show - thanks for uploading it!
Cool! Thanks for the feedback it means a lot
Thank you for this! The show looked killer! 🤘
Literally my childhood heroes and one of my primary musical influences
I was at the Phoenix,AZ show and it was amazing, thanks for posting the entire show, glad to see the band sounding so good after all this time, saw King Diamond back in Dec 2019 at the same venue and that too was also amazing.
They sound so good!!!
Same here. Both 2019 and 2022 at the same venue. I honestly feel like the crowd was very small
Absolutely Brilliant!!! I was there to witness Pure Magic. I must say I actually cried! So many fond memories it was like I re lived the first time I got my hands on Don’t break the Oath from start to beginning a masterpiece
I want MORE Eddie I hope they return soon
Epic! Thanks for uploading this. Sounds and looks great.
No problem!
Thursday in brooklyn cannot come fast enough cannot wait cant believe this is happening so excited
THAT will be an amazing show!
Outstanding video, Scott! Man, you chose a great spot to record from. Sounds fabulous! Thanks for the nice Halloween treat! I think the bass sounds good, and Becky kicks ass (reminds me of Rudy Sarzo)! She wields that heavy Rickenbacker like it's nothing. I can hear all instruments very well! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
You bet! It was the perfect vantage point, not great for closeups but the light show was great!
King diamond has to be top 5 best metal vocalist
Hell yes
No.
King Diamond, Halford, Dickinson, Araya and I don't know who the fifth would be

Yeah, I'll just quit next time and go! King and the band sounded better than they have in years!
Loved it. Great video. Setlist with time stamp is genius! Good vibes.

Fantastic footage! I've been a fan of KD&MF for 30 years. Saw King Diamond a couple times, but not Mercyful Fate. As a U.S. Army Combat Veteran, my community keeps me very busy. Finally had half a moment and learned Mercyful Fate was in Gary, IN. I grew up 20 minutes from there. A few days later they were here in NY, but with my responsibilities I need more than a few days to plan. But the old man's still got it at 66. He'll probably be around again. Stay Heavy 🤘👿🤘
Keep it Metal!
incredible show. I waited 37 years to see this greatness. Saw the same show in sacramento last night

He definitely had a hard time on Come To The Sabbath but otherwise he's still pretty amazing. Long live the King!
