    I appreciate this. I have the same unit (over a decade old now) powering my PC and wrongly thought the sudden shutdowns were a PC driver issue, but no, it was the UPS battery. Time to change it. Nice to find a video on changing it out.

    My Costco UPS stopped working fully a while back, and after coming across your video, I decided to do something about it! After watching it twice, I ordered a replacement battery, and fifteen minutes of work now has the UPS up and running fully again. Thanks a lot! Your video, with the detailed instructions, really made it easy.

    Thanks for the good instructions and great video clip. My battery replacement went off without a hitch (or a jolt) thanks to this great guide. I am not an electrician, but I take seriously all advice not to touch parts that might cause shock. I'm here to tell you this advice works. Anyway, the Tripp Lite unit is functioning and the battery is charging up. Thanks for your time and trouble, Joseph!

    Just so you know: your video gave me the confidence to change the battery in my OMNI1000LCD UPS. I had quite a bit more trouble putting it back together than you (thanks to irreversible carpal tunnel syndrome combined with poor eyesight) but I still managed it with a little help from the wife. Excellent video, and you saved me a TON of money from buying a new one (although the new ones look pretty cool, too).

    Thanks Joe!
    Went on the TrippsAlot site to find documentation for my OmniPlus1000LCD...found the product page and there were no manuals, no documentation, nothing...nada, zippo, zilch.
    I also have 2 Omni1000LCD up's, and two APC UPS's. These were all purchased at Costco prior to finding a UPS manufacturer with GREAT product support.
    Cyber Power is the best, I now own 9 CyberPower units, 4 of them obsolete rack mount models I got used from eBay. Can't say they'd do it for everybody, but they sent me some parts at no charge!!! I use the other UPS brands for non critical loads, such as my alarm clock and coffee pot. (When I replace a group of 4 or 8 batteries some are still healthy, I keep the healthy ones charged in a ups to keep them healthy). I'm ready for the bad weather :). Btw: Having my DLP TV on a UPS has made a profound difference in lamp life...the AC voltage in my area (Winchester VA) is anything but stable.
    It takes a lot of Batteries to feed all of my UPS's. I've been buying from batterymart for years, even when I live in CA and NM, but they have an store in this city...still shop around for your UPS battery carefully. Always get at least a 9AH battery (if you can afford it).

    I have the same unit, that I got from Costco. The battery backup side is not working at all, no LCD working either. I have been using the other Surge Protector side for about a year, never bothered to replace the battery, after seeing this, I would give it a try. I did not know the battery I needed to replace the existing one. This has been a big help.

    Just ordered another replacement battery for my Tripp Lite OMNI1000LCD UPS since the unit started randomly shutting down even though the Replace Battery light didn't appear AND the battery was still showing 5 bars. I originally purchased this UPS in May 2006 from Costco and replaced the battery for the first time ~ 6 years later in Feb 2012 with a 12V 9A UB1290 off eBay for $26.99 shipped made by UPG (Universal Power Group). Almost exactly 6 years later (Feb 2018) replacing its battery again with another UPG UB1290 off eBay for $18.99 shipped. Impressive battery life vs. the maximum 3 years we get on the 12V 18aH RBC7 UPS batteries in our company's much heavier duty APC SUA1500 and APC RUA3000 UPS units.

If I take out the battery so I can use it for some other project, I think the surge protectors will still work. Main point if I take it out and launch the ups will there be any safety issues? I can isolate the terminals

    I spent many years working at a larger corporation. We had thousands of the Battery Back Systems that were from small installation to larger installations.
    When you 1st install these they work great for the 1st few years, then you start getting into the maintenance of replacing the batteries. Once you are in the maintenance window, your equipment, computers or whatever you were protecting are now losing power because of dead battery or weak battery and your equipment is down because of no power. This is exactly what you were trying to do in the first replace was to avoid a power outage. For years we were trying to decide if UPS systems were worth their money. The UPS became another device in the mix that could fail.
    My opinion is for large companies that have plenty money to spent that it would be worth it for sound of mind. For home use since you probably only need one and only have to replace the battery every 3 years its differently worth protecting your PC with valuable data. Home UPS system cost $75-$150 and the batteries can be replace with at a cost around $40-$75 from your local battery dealer.

    Great video. I have the same model that I haven't powered up (turned on) in a couple of years. Presently, it doesn't turn on - beep, click and display turn on. In your experience, does this sound like a battery problem or something else. The battery is measuring around 5V. The unit doesn't turn on with the battery disconnected either.

    Great video, thanks. One question. With the UPS upright as shown, the battery is upright with the terminals at the top of the battery. I run my identical UPS flat, meaning the battery terminals would be on the battery side. Does that make any difference? Are those batteries designed to be laid on their side? I know I would not like to lay my car battery on its side.

    • @JosephChavez
      @JosephChavez  3 роки тому

      It’s been a while since I had this UPS. I will say that the batteries are fully sealed and shouldn’t leak. I agree they should be standing up but I don’t remember if that UPS made you lie them on their sides or not.

    I've occasionally put a "Wanted" ad on Freecycle or Craig's List and then gone collecting "dead" UPS units. Probably more than half of them just need a battery. Most of the bigger units I have (including an OMNI1000LCD) were "freebies". I had a screwdriver with a slightly shorter blade so I cut about 3/4" off the blade side of the handle to be able to open the OMNI and some other UPS units with deep-seated screws. (Yes, it's ugly - but it works fine ;-)
    The OMNI1000 is a relatively efficient UPS, providing 250 watts for 10 minutes or 20 watts for maybe 2-3 hours - at the lower power levels, think power for a cable modem or router or DVR or ... I'm not sure of the original production date of the OMNI1000LCD but it was first listed on Amazon in January of 2007.
    The only cheaper low power UPS is the APC BGE70 or BGE90 (70 and 90 watts, respectively) which are ideal for low power loads and newegg.com sells them for $20 delivered several times a year - you must be on their mailing list to see that deal. $20 makes the UPS cheaper than its replacement battery so I have several of the BGE70 and BGE90 to power things scattered around the house: 1. the laptop monitoring my small solar backup system, 2. the Uverse router and the base unit for the cordless phones, 3. the gigabit router and 24 port network switch, 4. the house alarm console, the talking caller ID box and an LED nightlight - this one is good for about 7 hours, 5. the Raspberry Pi that's the web server for my in-house network and a wi-fi repeater for part of the basement. All these small backups mean I continue to have the usual services (phone, internet, etc) during short power outages and there's no rush to get backup power going. I usually wait 30 minutes into an outage before doing more than getting out a flashlight and putting a spark lighter by the gas cook top.
    The solar backup system? Think BIG UPS. 540AH battery bank with a 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter. It can power the fridge, some LED lighting, the furnace, internet and charging phones for about 12 hours and it's switched in with a GenTran manual backup power transfer unit. I don't yet have enough solar panels or battery capacity to be off grid for days, but having 10-12 hours of silent backup means I'm not out in a thunderstorm trying to get a gasoline generator started.
    My first "end of civilization" novel is here: www.amazon.com/dp/B01LVU5ILA

    Hello Joe! My LCD screen doesn't show the battery replacement icon, instead it shows the last (4th) window with an icon like a triangle and balancing beam to one side and the word FAULT at the bottom. I should add that the unit suddenly turned off and the battery icon shows only three bars charged. First thing that comes to mind is the battery; yet, the FAULT icon makes me think it's the electricity in the house. I went to a friend's house who has this same unit and plugged mine in the same outlet, but nothing changed. Any idea what's going on? Thanks for your help!

    • @JosephChavez
      @JosephChavez  10 років тому

      So you got the same results at your friend's house? If so, it might be the battery or something else. My guess is the battery, depending on the age and also based on you not getting full bars. I'll bet the battery is starting to swell or leak. You could at least open the case just to peek in on the battery. Hopefully a new battery will fix your issue.

    First let me thank you for this video. I was about to throw away the UPS when I found it. I have one of these UPS units. Mine is a OMNIPLUS 1000 but it looks identical. Question for you. You said it would just shut off. Did it completely go off where there was no display at all? Mine is completely dead but I think it is because the battery is completely dead. I think mine is probably 7 to 10 years old.

      +Rick Fitzgerald Hey Rick! If I remember correctly, I think even when plugged into an outlet and had good power, the unit would shut down. Cold. Completely off. That's when I knew that it was probably the battery. When I opened it up--I don't remember if this is on the video--the original battery had already started to swell so it was clear that it needed to be replaced. Sounds like you might be in the same boat. Not sure if this is a feature of the unit--if it has a bad battery it won't start up--but I think I've seen others who had the same situation. Really, it's not a bad unit. Batteries fail. In fact, I just found out that my home alarm system needs a new battery! I have to open it and see if it's the same kind as in this UPS.

      Mine went out without any warning. Just went totally dead. Computer and monitor completely lost power. OTOH, I had the UPS in a place where I never checked on the LCD for battery condition. It is not a good thing for the SSDs I installed in my computer to suddenly lose power. All kinds of bad things can happen.

    Mine says fault after testing it has a new battery it's fully charged it says the battery is low. It also will switch to the battery if I unplug it but then will shut off the devices when plugged back in and supply no power untill I unplug the unit.

    @JLiRD808... dealt with tripp-lite ups's for 7 years. A lot of large electrical/electronics companies purposely make products non serviceable to the average consumer as a cost of sales measure, to entice consumers to buy again...

    Just a tip with transformers like these you don't want to touch the board even after the battery is gone the capacitors and the transformer will still have a charge and you can still get electrocuted just plug something into the battery port to drain all the power to protect your self

    • @notyoung
      @notyoung 5 років тому +1

      If you unplug the cord and disconnect the battery, there is nothing storing enough energy to electrocute you. There's a slim possibility of a shock. Transformers do not store power and there isn't enough power left in a capacitor to harm you - other than jerking back from a shock and busting your knuckles on something sharp ;-) Low voltage wiring (24 volts for thermostats, etc) is considered safe.
      I've been dealing with power on some level for almost 60 years - house wiring, automobile wiring, small electric vehicles, small solar systems (under 7KwH).

    So mine unit is showing at full power however I get this clicking noise every so often and the power dims. So like if I have my laptop plugged into it the screen will dim for a little while, it will click again and then my screen will go back to regular brightness. So even though battery shows as full power should I still try and order a new battery and try replacing it or does it sound like the entire unit should be replaced?

    • @JosephChavez
      @JosephChavez  10 років тому

      Hmm, hard to tell. It depends in part how old the battery is. Mine used to click a lot but the LCD on the unit would dim. Sounds like a failing battery to me but again, depends on how old it is.

      My ex bought it so not entirely sure, My guess is about 4-5 years old. Just hate to replace the entire thing if I can just replace the battery. Probably worth investing ~$30 to see. Thanks and video is quite helpful since looking at this I couldn't figure out how to get in so thank you!

      Stacy Bentley At 4-5 years old, I'd say it's a bad battery. Worth the cost just try and replace it.

    thank you for the video and very nice job. I just wanted to caution users that there are rectifiers and condensers that can and will hold a charge even after the battery is unplug. Be careful messing around with the business end of the UPS. You could have a shocking result :-)

      That was my biggest concern while I was making the video. It would have been capture on video which might have been fun for some viewers. Ha!

    Hmmm...I'm not an electrician so I can't say for certain. However, if you UPS is that old with the original battery that isn't working, yes, you should at the very least remove it because it'll start leaking. Mine just barely started leaking so it's a good thing I swapped it out before I had a huge mess on my hands. Beyond that, I can't really tell you, but I'm sure you'll find something about that on the 'net.

    What's stupid is that Tripp Lite's website has TONS of videos...but none on how to replace batteries >:(
    Thank you!

    • @JosephChavez
      @JosephChavez  7 років тому +1

      Yeah that's because you really aren't supposed to be able to change the batteries in these. They aren't necessarily user-replaceable even though it's easily done.

    • @notyoung
      @notyoung 5 років тому

      Probably because there are so many people who wouldn't unplug it to replace the battery and would sue TrippLIte if the idiot got shocked or killed. If they made a unit that disconnected the power when you removed the cover, they might provide that video. Not a problem for me - I design and build things with "No user serviceable parts inside" ;-)

    • @TheRealMrCrowley
      @TheRealMrCrowley 5 років тому

      Because they dont support, or want you to be, replacing the battery

  • @JosephChavez
    @JosephChavez  11 років тому

    I doubt it as I believe the battery is part of the overall circuit. Also, since my old battery was so worn out, the entire UPS would just shut itself off without warning. So if you remove the battery entirely, I don't think the UPS will even turn on.

    I've got a Tripp-Lite SMART1000LCD.
    Unlike this OMNI1000LCD, the SMART1000LCD has a user-accessible battery compartment. Just remove one retaining screw, slide the compartment lid off and there's the battery. No having to take the unit apart to gain access.
    Of course, I did have to take my SMART1000LCD apart anyway as there was a loose part inside. Turns out one of the MOSFETs became completely detached from the mainboard. Fortunately, it didn't cause any shorts, though it would prevent the unit from functioning. Installed and resoldered the part back on the board and reflowed a couple of questionable solder joints while I was at it.
    For a part to just come off says enough about their quality ... none of it good.
    On top of that, the original battery went bad. That, I can't fault Tripp-Lite for.

    got a replacement battery and what do you know the new replacement battery died after one day I was socked no voltage and nothing,talked to the supplier and after a time agreed to give me a second one and this time it worked,the moral of the story be aware of the person selling you a battery it may not charge.

      Yup. I long ago upgraded that UPS to a Tripp-Lite SMART1500LCDT and those batteries are still running strong. I haven't had to replace them yet but at least I know this UPS is designed to have user-replaceable batteries.

    I wonder if the front panel indicator that says "REPLACE" might be a sign that you should replace the battery. Hmmmm...🤔🤦🏻‍♂🙄 🤣 And P2 is a Phillips #2 size. Sheesh, it's so basic dude.
