I bought an OMNI1000LCD 5ish years ago maybe longer......
In its application it gets used A LOT. So its constantly being used at night, charges during the day. So its cycling every 24 hour period.
I replaced the battery about a year ago for 25 bucks. It still lasts all night and charges during the day. New battery should last longer than the last one did.
I've been pleased. Bought 5 more of the 1000LCD model and 4 or 5 of the newer model.

    I was given a Tripp-Lite Smart 1000LCD with a bad battery.
But, there was something loose inside rattling around. Took the cover off and found that the piece ratting inside was an STMicroelectonics P60NF06. Checked all the boards and there were no missing parts, including one board that already had a P60NF06.
It must have been a part that was dropped in by mistake and just left inside.
This is real quality control at work here, folks!

Compared to the American made APC that I replaced the battery on after this one.
You can see the quality in the APC, the PCB is flawless, everything is heavy gauge steel, huge power transformer. That unit is what protects my computer from surges. So I know it wasn`t a surge that blew my power supply.
It was a cheap chinese PSU installed by the computer shop

      @Watcher3223 7 років тому

Oh, man. As you know, cheap Chinese PSUs are almost unavoidable, even with high end models.
You not only hope that the engineering and parts selection are good, but also the quality of assembly.
As for the Tripp-Lite, the quality of the PCB seems reminiscent of a cheap Chinese computer PSU. Parts selection was okay. For instance, there were Jamicon electrolytic capacitors, which certainly don't compare to Nichicon or Panasonic but are at least arguably better than stuff from the likes of Lelon or CapXon.
But it did bother me that a loose part was missed in all the steps it took to build it. It was fortunate that the loose MOSFET didn't come into contact with live circuits and caused a short all this time it was in there.

Well, a little update on that Tripp-Lite UPS.
Turns out that loose MOSFET wasn't left in there by accident after all. Looking around a little deeper, it detached from the board (Q7) because of bad soldering.
      Still, pretty good QC. /sarc

The first one I had burnt up and was replaced under protest. It was 6 months old and almost caught fire. I took it back to the store and they said there was nothing they could do. I held it up high over a glass showcase and asked them nicely to replace it or it might slip. They replaced under protest. They wanted me to send to manufacture. After the unit sparking and smoking I was in no mood for that. This one I serviced is the replacement that failed after 2 years.

I can see why you'll never buy Tripp-Lite ever again.
And based on what I've experienced with this Smart1000LCD I got, that just further validates your experience with their products.
I may try to get this thing up and running again, though. The MOSFET seems to still be good, so I soldered it back into its place as well as resoldered the other MOSFET. The original battery is still bad as parts of the case is bulging and it's only putting out 4 volts. With the original battery, it tries to start but can't. So, I'll have to get a replacement battery.

Have exact same unit. Brother-in-law gave to me. Exact same problem. Ups does not turn on at all even when plugged into ac household power. Battery is completely shot. Plugged in 12v battery pack (12v battery pack is 8 AA batteries), so definately not enough to completely power unit on battery but it still got display to light up temporarily for a few seconds which tells me it is most likely a battery issue. It didn't even do that with original battery plugged into ac power. But now that I think about it should've used my benchtop power supply that I normally use for my CB radios. (Not variable, just standard 12 to 14vdc output) Original battery read approx 365 millivolts. Yes!, millivolts. I'm ordering a new battery to see if this solves problem. From what I've read, these newer inverters still need the battery present to work even if the unit is connected to ac power. BC these things also help to prevent spikes, brownouts, etc not just provide backup power in the event of a complete ac power failure.

12voltvids ah you can trust China with the goldfish but not the PC. LOL. I recently acquired a Omni 900 LCD Tripp Lite I believe it has the same symptoms the surge protector side works the battery protected surge protector side doesn't and the little screen power button does nothing. I opened it up as well just like you and found no burn marks or signs of visual damage. When I attach an analog multimeter to the battery while it's still in the unit and plugged into the wall the needle will faintly jump showing almost no charge so I'm not getting absolute zero, but since everything is still plugged in shouldn't I be getting more voltage because it's plugged into the wall? I couldn't tell if you had the same thing on your unit but there's something in line on the negative wire side going to the battery that looks about the size of a Lego double wrapped in shrink tubing I can't tell if it's a fuse of some sort without cutting it open. My question is "given this information" do you think I have the same problem? and what is that in line thing on the negative pole wire connected to the battery?" I'm sorry for being a bit wordy but given that I paid nothing for this heavy duty surge protector and batteries are pretty cheap around here I think it's worth it.

Still running in 2018, working fine since the battery replacement, but it will probably need another one soon, as the new battery I put in my APC UPS is already showing that it is almost done. If I unplug the power it starts beeping that it is low after 5 minutes, and it used to run 20.

One of the reasons these keep showing up with a bad battery (relatively short battery life) is a weakness in the design.
The OMNI900 series either does not have (or does not have a reliable) low-voltage cutoff for the battery. What happens is that you lose power. Okay, so far, so good - the UPS takes over. But the little battery in there is not good for long. It's only something like 70 - 140 amp-hour. That means 100 watts of draw will kill it in an hour. One desktop computer will probably kill it in 30 minutes.
At night, unattended, the battery runs all the way down and it shuts off. Those small motorcycle batteries do not like that - especially if the condition lasts. I have seen several of these OMNI units (maybe all) that do not start to recharge the battery if it is completely flat. So even when it gets power (110) back, the battery remains dead. After a day of that, the battery probably will NOT even take a charge. So you have a "good" UPS, with a bad almost-new battery.

Hey, there's a notice on the product labeling saying that the output isn't sinusoidal. This is what you're talking about with regard to the fact that the output may be a 60Hz square wave, where your multimeter couldn't read the actual output voltage and how the UPS output couldn't properly power that mercury lamp you had.
Also on the label, it said your UPS was tested to UL 1778 (standard for uninterruptible power supplies), but the testing must have been done by the manufacturer rather than by the Underwriters Laboratories. But, hey, at least it was certified by TÜV Rhineland, so that's something, isn't it?
When you examined the innards of your UPS, did any of the components bear the "Recognized Component" mark?

+Donald Ellett Match my APC battery replacement video if you want to see a good one.A good AMERICAN MADE UPS. Manufacturing quality is top rate.Mine you it did cost about 700.00 when it was new, and lasted a LONG time before the batteries went bad, The trip lite crap unit, the first one ended after only 6 months in a smoke show, and the second one lasted barely a year before the battery died.

So because Tripp lite has a defective product the 3rd party should replace outside of return policy? Learn how business works. They aren’t the mfg so don’t handle mfg warranty. Simple.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 років тому +3

They sold the product they need to stand by the product and deal with the manufacture. You should learn how business works. I spent 20 years in the retail / repair business working for a company that was around for 47 years before they close their doors. When we sold something that broke, we took the initiative and looked after the customer. It wasn't their fault it broke, and it wasn't our fault either. We could have said, go fu&k off and take it to Sony or Panasonic. Guess what that would have done? Piss off the customer, and they will never return, and they will tell everyone they know how bad the service is.
No, we looked after the customer, and they rewarded us with repeat service, and they told all their friends how great the service was, and that had us as one of the most respected independent retail shops with a service department in the area.
This is something I will always be proud of, to be recognized by Sony and Panasonic
over the years as the gold standard on how their dealers should be operated.
Now remember the unit that burnt up was only 8 months old, had a 1 year warranty.
This store actually ended up going out of business. I know of many shops that take that same attitude, don't bring it back here if there is a problem, and they have all gone under. The ones that handle warranty failures correctly, by offering a replacement or refund are the ones that are still in business and doing well.
Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot. Have a problem, return it and the store will deal with it, and deal with the manufactures on the customers behalf. That is how a successful business is run.
