My son plays rugby league and for the past 3 years I’ve been filming all his games and he’s been asking for micd up style videos the last 2 years. After watching a few of your videos I decided to give it a go. FB marketplace for a Dji mic and had an old lapel mic already. A few mistakes while learning it all but within a week I have a set up I’m happy with. First of all, because the quality of a lav mic is better. But most of all, because you ideally want to put the DJI mic in the pocket of the vest, which is at the back, and your audio will be terrible if you record someone’s voice from a mic that’s on their back.
This is awesome, just what I need to know in this topic. Thank you. By the way, have you ever had any voice/noise/interference issues between the rode lav mic and the DJI transmitter and or receiver? As far I know that was a pretty common issue and it ruined the audio mainly and that's why I bought the rode wireless go II instead of the DJI. (But I wanted the DJI Mic, though.)
I just bought the dji mic with two transmitters from your amazon link. does this mean i can record and mic up two people at the same time with one camera?
This is a great video! I wanna do some videos like this with some athletes, but my problem is that they're already using a vest with a GPS tracker in it. How would you solve that? Another vest on top? 😅
Hey man great video, really informative! Quick question, I play competitive Spikeball and am looking to start creating Mic'd up content. I film on my Iphone and know that the DJI mic is compatible with Iphones. Was wondering, could I get away with just buying the DJI Mic and not all the other accessories such as the lavalier mic?
Yeah I guess considering that spikeball is not a contact sport, you can probably get away with it as long as it's not against the rules to have something sticking out of your t-shirt. If it's like other sports where you can't have jewellery or a watch on while you play, I doubt they'll let you wear the DJI mic transmitter on your collar.
It's an Australian product that's not available online in the US as far as I can tell. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any American product equivalent on Amazon that wasn't selling the GPS with the vest.
Did the DJI package you recommended. Works absolutely great, thank you. I did have one question: do you know how long the mic lasts that is in the vest? I'm using this to record pick up basketball games and I usually run 2-4 games, but sometimes have to wait. Will the mic (battery) last like 2 hours on my back? Thanks again, love the set up!!!!!!!!!!!
@@BeyondTheGame_E I understand that this may be difficult to diagnosis, but you have any idea as to why my DJI doesn't record sometimes. It's odd. Things are charged, I believe all things are plugged in, I'm just not getting sound sometimes. Thanks.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Not sure I understand the difference. HOWEVER, I think I may have figured it out. Before a pick up game I'm shooting around, the transmitter (mic) is searching for the receiver, BUT I don't turn on the receiver until a game starts. So I think I just have to turn both on (mic and receiver) for the duration of playing, NEVER turn off the receiver. Does that seem right? But then the question is, will they both last like 2-3 hrs? Hope so...thank you for your time.
With the vest being more centred in the chest area do you think the lav mic would be damaged easier being clipped there(for rugby)? Would you ever clip it to their collar area of the t shirt? Or any suggestions with where to put the lav mic for rugby game mic ups?
Anywhere you put it is somewhat of a gamble at the end of the day. I would think it would have a better chance of getting ripped off if attached to the collar.

There’s gain levels on both the transmitters and the receiver so make sure that both are set properly. Also, when recording in mono, you can also record a safe track which will be recorded 6db lower than your main track just in case the main track is too loud.
Hey bro, so I made the adjustments you recommended and it worked great! My next micd up session I want to mic up two players. I wanted your thoughts on how to best achieve this. Hi I just bought the dji mic ,I wanted mic up a player for football ,but just nervous on where. I don't have a lavelier mic I just bought the one transmitter set up. Thank you! I don't want it to break.
My mic'ed up setup recommendation for football is exactly the same as the one in this video. You can try to tape the transmitter inside the front of the shoulder pads if you don't want to use a lav mic but it's obviously much more dangerous for your transmitter.
I went through your mic kits and because i’m on somewhat of a budget i’m thinking of getting the Saramonic Blink 500 B2 3.5MM 2.4G Dual Channel Wireless Microphone ($199 kit). Do you think that’ll be alright for a full rugby game with contact and everything

@@Ramu_uu Well, if you put the mic on the shoulder, the audio won't be nearly as good. So I guess it's one or the other depending on what bothers you the most.
Does the DJI Mic cuts the sound when not facing the camera? I am a soccer coach and i film my sessions, I need a mic that will not cut if i give my back to the camera. Do you know anything about that?
It won't do it every time but there's always a risk with these types of wireless systems. Which is why the DJI Mic transmitter internal recording is extremely helpful. That way, even if the connexion is lost with the camera, you can always retrieve the full audio file from the transmitter later. To get a connexion that never breaks no matter what, you would need a professional grade Tascam wireless system that costs at leass 3-4 times the price of the DJI Mic.
You can clip in at the front but with the microphone part inside instead of out. But honestly, I've clipped it outside many times as well and it's not a big deal. It's just an extra layer of protection.
With the receiver. The transmitter is on the player and the receiver is connected to your camera, phone or computer. Or, since you can record internally in the transmitter as well, you could use the transmitter only to record and then connect it to your computer to transfer the audio files. But that means you'll have to sync all your audio files to your video files manually in post.
They're all pretty much the same to be honest. Some are thicker so better protection but it also means that they are bigger and more obvious on camera.
I have done this with the Rode Wireless Go for lacrosse. Had issues of the athlete being 50 yards away from me and when their back was to me, the signal went out. Any experience using the DJI with an outdoor sport athlete like this?
I cover this topic in great details in my review video ua-cam.com/video/2s0jv7cWypU/v-deo.html but if you are in a situation where the signal tends to cut off, I would just make sure the internal recording is rolling. Which is much easier to manage with the DJI Mic.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I had a feeling you had already gone over this, so thank you for being willing to reply and send that link! Your video on Rode vs DJI convinced me to purchase the DJI this week and largely because of the internal recording and not needing an app to adjust settings. Love the channel! @@destinydennis6840 no idea. I change it all the time because every voice is different. You can’t adjust the input without hearing the voice first and seeing how high it gets in your transmitter. It’s definitely not a ‘one size fits all’ situation.
I responded already on your other comment just like this one but in case you didn’t see it: The transmitter is the part that goes in the vest but there’s also a receiver that’s connected to the camera with a 3.5mm stereo jack. Here’s a full review of the DJI mic ua-cam.com/video/2s0jv7cWypU/v-deo.html
If the DJI Mic receiver is connected to your camera, you won't have to sync anything because the audio will be recorded directly on your footage. But if you're talking specifically about the transmitter internal recording, the easiest method would be to never stop recording on your camera or maybe only stop at quarter time and half-time so that ultimately you only have a few clips to sync. And when you start a recording, point the camera at the player while their doing something easy to identify in the audio. Ideally they would clap their hands one time and you can just sync that clap pretty easily.
Nah. The pros will use a mic that allow you to pick a specific frequency so that no one interferes with anyone else. Those are much more expensive though.
@@BeyondTheGame_E i found it, they ship to The US so i out the order in. Imma get a large just so it can fit 2 to 3 different sizes without it being uncomfortable
That particular one is only available in Australia I think. Which is why I didn’t put any link. But I’m sure there are plenty of similar options available where you live.
I wish I watched this before I put one of my Rode Wireless Go II transmitters onto the front of the pads on my son's QB last week. It stayed on perfectly the day before, but then he rushed with the ball, got hit and the transmitter just kind of disappeared in the turf :| The sounds were brilliant before we lost it though.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thank you for the info pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff. Is the lightning connector a usb plug that saves the info to the iPhone?
Same principle apply by using a vest but obviously the lapel mic at the front will be much more at risk. Which is why typically the refs are the only ones wearing mics for these types of videos in rugby union and league.
Hi! I love these videos but I can’t afford any of these! I know this sounds desperate but I was wondering if you could help me get a DJI so I can mic my friends up and myself! Anyways love your videos!❤
I don't think there's much I can do unfortunately. But if you look at my mic'd up video kit suggestions (link in description) there are a few cheaper alternatives.
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.” You need to have a follow up video, interviewing an insurance agent about how to insure yourself and your business if the player is injured while wearing this. Pro teams, college and school teams all have way more insurance than you'd ever imagine. You, the video guy, probably don't.
This is just like flying drones. The product is there and there are plenty of UA-cam videos showing you how to use it but ultimately it's up to you to use it safely and legally.
Actually it is the best/safest place for football. If you land on your back, because of the natural arc of the spine, the middle part of your back will take most of the impact and the back of your helmet will take the rest. But the part in between will take little to no impact unless it lands directly on someone’s foot or something like that.
How did you like the audio from my mic'd up video?

I’ve never heard of it, sorry.
Does the DJI transmitter connect to Sony cameras?
Yes it does. Well technically, the transmitter is what's on the player. The receiver is what is connected to the camera.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thanks!
When you say put the lav mic itself inside the vest and not on the outside you mean in the velcro pouch with the transmitter?
No I mean clip it on the front of the vest just like I did in the video but clip it so that the mic is inside not outside.
@@BeyondTheGame_EGotcha thanks!
have you tried wearing it backwards and just use the wireless mic without lav in pouch?
No I haven’t but, not only would it be very uncomfortable, it would also put the transmitter in a much more vulnerable position.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thanks
Do you need a professional camera or can you use a phone
You can use a phone.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Thanks so much for the reply and for the content! Send you good vibes!
I am late to this great video
It's never too late! Thanks
If i did this for football(American), where would you recommend to put the mic
Exact same place.
Hey bro so your saying don’t put the mic outside the vest . Where should i place the mic ?
You can clip in at the front but with the microphone part inside instead of out. But honestly, I've clipped it outside many times as well and it's not a big deal. It's just an extra layer of protection.
may i ask. how do you get the audio from the microphone onto your phone or laptop?
With the receiver. The transmitter is on the player and the receiver is connected to your camera, phone or computer. Or, since you can record internally in the transmitter as well, you could use the transmitter only to record and then connect it to your computer to transfer the audio files. But that means you'll have to sync all your audio files to your video files manually in post.
which deadcat do you recommend for the Shure MVL LAV?
They're all pretty much the same to be honest. Some are thicker so better protection but it also means that they are bigger and more obvious on camera.
Does this work for hockey
Yes of course. This applies to any sport but the sound will be a bit more muffled if the mic is underneath a pair of shoulder pads.
Now tho do we use it and it match up with video and all that
Yes there’s a transmitter that goes on the player and a receiver that connects to the camera. So that all the audio is recorded straight on the video.
Thanks for providing useful content and inspiration!
How would you mic up a football player with the pads on for practice?
The same way with the vest underneath the pads.
where can I buy the vest he was wearing underneath his jersey?
I’m in Australia so I can’t recommend an American store. There are a couple models available on Amazon but I never tried them personally.
Can I use the same sitting for the DJI mic 2
Ive never used the new version but i would assume so.
O okay. So just try your settings on the new version and see if it sounds good
@@MrAKirby yes exactly.
Okay thanks
Yooo bro got a link for that vest?
It's an Australian product that's not available online in the US as far as I can tell. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any American product equivalent on Amazon that wasn't selling the GPS with the vest.
can you remind what setting you put on the transmitter?
I just lowered the input volume to make sure it wouldn't clip.
what’s the input you put it on?
@@destinydennis6840 no idea. I change it all the time because every voice is different. You can’t adjust the input without hearing the voice first and seeing how high it gets in your transmitter. It’s definitely not a ‘one size fits all’ situation.
Where is the link for that vest?
This particular vest is not available outside of Australia.
Can this hook up to a phone?
Yes it can.
I wanna get mic’d up, but I don’t wanna spend numbers like 70$ is there any cheap options?
I doubt that you’ll be able to find a wireless mic kit, a lavalier microphone and a vest for less than $70.
how do u connect them to the camera?
I responded already on your other comment just like this one but in case you didn’t see it:
The transmitter is the part that goes in the vest but there’s also a receiver that’s connected to the camera with a 3.5mm stereo jack. Here’s a full review of the DJI mic ua-cam.com/video/2s0jv7cWypU/v-deo.html
Thought he was mic’ing up Chet for a min 😆
😂
What’s the name of the vest
This particular one is from SPT but I don't think it's available outside of Australia.
how exactly do you sync the audio from the mic to the footage from ur camera?
If the DJI Mic receiver is connected to your camera, you won't have to sync anything because the audio will be recorded directly on your footage. But if you're talking specifically about the transmitter internal recording, the easiest method would be to never stop recording on your camera or maybe only stop at quarter time and half-time so that ultimately you only have a few clips to sync. And when you start a recording, point the camera at the player while their doing something easy to identify in the audio. Ideally they would clap their hands one time and you can just sync that clap pretty easily.
@@BeyondTheGame_E okay yeah that makes sense thank you
Is this the mic used for NBA players?
Nah. The pros will use a mic that allow you to pick a specific frequency so that no one interferes with anyone else. Those are much more expensive though.
Where can i get the vest from?
That particular one is only available in Australia.
@@BeyondTheGame_E i found it, they ship to The US so i out the order in. Imma get a large just so it can fit 2 to 3 different sizes without it being uncomfortable
@@PrimeFocusStudio really? Can you send me the link?
where do you get the vest?
That particular one is only available in Australia I think. Which is why I didn’t put any link. But I’m sure there are plenty of similar options available where you live.
@@BeyondTheGame_E what is it called?
@@Glows_world I think it's usually called a GPS vest or tracker vest
I wish I watched this before I put one of my Rode Wireless Go II transmitters onto the front of the pads on my son's QB last week. It stayed on perfectly the day before, but then he rushed with the ball, got hit and the transmitter just kind of disappeared in the turf :|
The sounds were brilliant before we lost it though.
😬
How do you get your audio you said in the game to a iPhone or iPad?
The receiver is connected to my camera.
@@BeyondTheGame_E I don’t have a camera I have a IPhone and IPad is there any way you can connect the receiver to a phone or iPad
@@calebthrowsdiscs yes there’s a lightning connector included for iPhones and iPads.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thank you for the info pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff. Is the lightning connector a usb plug that saves the info to the iPhone?
@@calebthrowsdiscs it’s all part of the DJI mic kit. You get 2 transmitters, 1 receiver and all the cables and connectors for $329.
what if i wanna mic up in a rugby game cause we dont wear pads
Same principle apply by using a vest but obviously the lapel mic at the front will be much more at risk. Which is why typically the refs are the only ones wearing mics for these types of videos in rugby union and league.
Hi! I love these videos but I can’t afford any of these! I know this sounds desperate but I was wondering if you could help me get a DJI so I can mic my friends up and myself! Anyways love your videos!❤
I don't think there's much I can do unfortunately. But if you look at my mic'd up video kit suggestions (link in description) there are a few cheaper alternatives.
@@BeyondTheGame_Eok thank you for your time!

I need to try this but with one of the water proof phone bags cause the guys I record are not going to wear a sports bra. lol
Can’t find the best and it’s not on your Amazon list
This particular one is only available in Australia.
This would be great if I wasn’t a broke middle school kid
Here's a video review of a few budget options that might do the trick for you ua-cam.com/video/cEEVz_Y_hQk/v-deo.html
@@BeyondTheGame_E thank you man 🙏
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.” You need to have a follow up video, interviewing an insurance agent about how to insure yourself and your business if the player is injured while wearing this. Pro teams, college and school teams all have way more insurance than you'd ever imagine. You, the video guy, probably don't.
This is just like flying drones. The product is there and there are plenty of UA-cam videos showing you how to use it but ultimately it's up to you to use it safely and legally.
maybe not the best place for transmitter for american football
Actually it is the best/safest place for football. If you land on your back, because of the natural arc of the spine, the middle part of your back will take most of the impact and the back of your helmet will take the rest. But the part in between will take little to no impact unless it lands directly on someone’s foot or something like that.
Oh cool!@@BeyondTheGame_E
