In this sports videography tutorial, I teach you how to film a cinematic basketball game from start to finish. We break down the 5 shots that you need to get when filming basketball and how these shots from the start of the game all the way through to the final buzzer come together to tell the story of a sports game or event. After this video you’ll hopefully have a better idea of how to tell the story of a basketball game through video as a sports filmmaker and will feel more confident going to film a basketball game for yourself!

Hope you liked this one! Comment below what other videos you want to see me make ⬇️
I’m glad you spoke on missing shots, because I beat myself up a lot about missing shots. 🤦🏾♂️
No reason to worry about that. Like I said, happens to all of us every game. Just only post the good ones lol
I experience the same thing for Player introductions when I film the Scarborough Shooting Stars as well
I am a dad trying to to make highlight videos of my daughter playing basketball for scouts/coaches. I know coaches want to see the overhead shots to see how my daughter is making choices on the court, but I want to spice it a bit. Can you do a video dedicated to dad’s like me? I really like what you did in this video too! Thanks for your help!
That’s the stupidest idea. Why would he waste his time doing that? That literally would only benefit YOU! 98% of the people that follow Pete are aspiring/professional videographers not dads trynna get content for their kids 😂 grow up!
@@superemesean5907why u being so rude bro you could’ve worded that differently 😂
@superemesean5907 thats not true ..im a dad videoing my son's basketball.... i had videos of my son that I showed to a club that he is playing in now and they love it.
What kind of camara are you using for making the film? 😢
@@superemesean5907 I'm a dad doing video for our team. My guess is the vast majority of people here are just like him and I.

Thank you Peter!!! this content isso sOO helpful! apprecia you!
For sure, always happy to help! Appreciate you tuning in!
Thanks Peter for this video, very informative! I've seen you at Shooting Stars game as I sit courtside. I have a Canon Rebel EOS Rebel 2, I'm a beginner, what lenses should I have to take video and pics of my sons u13 team? What are they best settings for each? What is the best basic editing software for beginners for PC. Thanks!
Bro, this mix is FIRE! I have the same settings as you, why arent my 4k vids showing like yours on youtube?
Definitely would like to see 5 shots needed for football
Def gonna have to make that happen when I have the time!
Love it!!
🙌
thanks for the tips !!!
No prob!
@petersarellas Are you on par focal zoom lens when you shoot sports?
Thanks man!
You’re welcome!
Great video Peter 👏 thanks for the tips 👍🏻 I uploaded my first basketball testvideo with my new ZVE1 😅 best cinematic greetings from germany
Awesome!! Happy this helped and keep doing your thing! 👊

@Peter Sarllas Where do I get good cinematic action trailer music from Al or of these sound effect and music websites I don’t feel Ofer great options?
I’ve been using Musicbed for my music for the last few months and they have lots of good variety so I’d suggest checking there to see if you like anything. I’ve also gotten some decent SFX from freesound.org so consider looking at that too.
What kind of laptop do you use to edit? I assume you have a PC to do your main edits but I am referring to when you want to upload during a game. Also do you have any advice for setting preferences to help speed up computer speed when editing? Thanks
I use a 2018 MacBook Pro with intel i9 and 32GB of RAM for all of my edits. Having an external SSD helps big time with speed when editing.
I would like to know if your recording all the way through the entire event. If not when do you take a break from recording. I feel like I have to record all the way through to get as much as possible but other times I feel like it’s a waste of battery and memory. Thoughts?
It’s really about understanding what you’re producing from the event and who will be using the content and then shooting accordingly. That said, I’ll usually be present for the entire event but film in shorter clips rather than just keep it rolling for the entire event since with spots you never know when something good may happen. Whether or not you may or may not film ancillary events around the actual game all depends on your goals for the content you’re making. Hope this helps.
This is excellent info. Thank you!!! Is there a certain lens you use for the entire game or do you switch up? I’m filming games this season for a high school and I was thinking of getting the 70-200 for it but I’m not sure if that’ll be the only lens I use.
The one lens that I feel really confident using for a full game when filming basketball (especially on a crop sensor) is the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 because of its wide focal range. On a full frame camera I’ve used a 70-200mm f4 for a full game and it’s been fine though you do have to step back when someone gets a bit too close to you
@@petersarellas thank you so much for replying. I actually watched your review of the Tamron 35-150 this morning and I totally agree with you. It’s hard to catch close shots with the 70-200. I appreciate everything you share with us on this page.
I was given a Sony A6000 to use before I get my own camera is that a good camera to to get me started for a few months?
Yeah absolutely it is! 1080p 60fps is definitely good enough to get started and Sony has tons of great budget friendly crop sensor lenses for you to choose from.
Great video big guy! You need a shorter HDMI cable for your monitor :P
Yeah I definitely do lol
My boy Teddy Allen , I use to shoot for him when he was at NMSU
Cool! Small world I guess haha
I got a 24-70 and I don’t know if all my settings are right what shutter speed do u use mostly for basketball and is there a settings video u can link?
Usually shutter is around 1/320-1/400

Hello Peter! Thks for your tips I have a question. I just made a basket video from a match with fx30 and Rs3 gimbal for stabilization. How do you do get stabilisation shots without? Cause I'm not effective to follow rapid action like basketball handball etc. I saw you don't use gimbal. How do you do? Please. And again Thks for all
I usually put a camera strap on pulling it tight around my neck when filming and use active stabilization. A lot of the lenses I use have stabilization built in as well. Between all of that I’m generally able to get pretty steady handheld footage even at longer focal lengths
@@petersarellas oh ok thkx for your answer again. I was wondering about the king of engine in jour left arm that we see in your game winning shot but ok. I need to work to learn how to stabilize with the strap!!! Great
Do you use any filters for basketball on your lens?
Usually tiffen pro mist 1/4 filter
The pump fake one is so real
What lens u used in this video?
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and Sony 70-200mm f4
For basketball what size mm lense are you using? 24-70mm?
For this game I mostly used the Tamron 28-75mm in APS-C crop mode but if shooting full frame I find myself more frequently using the Sony 70-200mm f4
@@petersarellas Hey Peter! I hope all is well.. Quick question for ya.. Did you ever find it helpful/unhelpful to use a 70-200 in APS-C while in crop mode? I’m using the Canon R7 and have a canon 70-200 f2.8 w/ built in IS. I also have a 24-70 (no IS) and was hoping to use the 70-200 since it has built in IS… This set up would mean I’m cropped in super duper close though :/ Interested in hearing your thoughts on this.. Thanks for these very helpful videos btw
@@laurena.stevens2355 hi Laurena, I often use the 70-200mm in crop mode when filming football but not basketball. I do use the Tamron 28-75mm in crop sensor mode sometimes for court sports and find it to be a good focal length so you could do so with your 24-70mm. The Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8 could also be a great lens for basketball on a crop sensor camera so consider that one as well.
How do you finish the video for a team that's just lost the match?
Similar way, still try to capture lots of emotions related to the outcome of the game (even if those emotions are sad). Obviously you have to approach the situation differently with regard to how close you get when filming as emotions can run high after a loss, so that may impact your lens choices, but having the visual is still a good thing as it may come in handy to tell a bigger story down the road.

I feel like I never get the players big enough. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
To get that “big” feeling I like sitting up the ground and shooting up at my subject from a low angle
@@petersarellas are you primarily shooting horizontally or vertically?
