Shame people don't know his "with our eyes wide open". The repeated bass banging sounds are him sampling himself hitting a metal wire fence in Australia with drum sticks. You have to hear that.
Human League DONT YOU WANT ME BABY? is certainly another “both points of view” song, and was as popular 30 years ago as this when released! Loved em both!
@@joecampbell2496 yeah.. but it's strange to have almost only 2 songs that tackle honestly and earnestly the two sides of a breakup. And they're both bangers.
You guys did a nice job understanding this song. Her coloring comes off her because she's now over him, but his colors remain because he's still "colored/painted" by his resentment and disappointment and obviously not over her.
@@ilikecatsalot4688 what? They have to give an intro and then give their thoughts on the song and how they interpreted the song at the end of the video. They can't just start the song, make background noises and then end the video
I love how you have Gotye playing to the camera and trying to keep the audience on his side, but Kimbra pleads directly to him for answers. It paints a picture of the guy in this relationship subconsciously playing the victim while the girl is just looking for some closure and finality. Only at the end does the guy turn his head away from the audience because he realizes what he did wrong. Another brilliant detail is how the girl only fits into “the picture” when she isn’t showing her face and telling her side of the story.
Gotye is from Australia. He is a self taught musician. Play’s all the instruments in his recording’s, which are done in his home studio. Another Triple J find amazing.
great job guys. Everyone who hears this the first time misses the point that she caught him with 'somebody he used to know' He admitted his addiction to the sadness of failed relationships. One implication by the end of the song is that his downfall might be the thrill of sadness - where the relationship didn't work out but it doesn't close the door to hook up in the future and have sad (sex).. Now that she is someone he used to know, he might hook up w/her down the road, cheating on a new current love. I love this song. He is the saboteur of his own life in relationships. I agree the artistry is brilliant. The music sublime and the message, haunting.
Genius pop song. The tune is instantly recognisable and nostalgic to all on first listen wether you realise it or not - its the nursery rhyme ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.
The message to me is leave your baggage at the curb before entering another relationship... we all have a past, but if you haven't come to terms and delt with it, all you will end up doing is messing with another person... the two facets or patterns will continue into perpetuity otherwise, until someone breaks the cycle
@No middle Ground 🙃 Dont bring your issues from a previous relationship into your new one. Deal with your issues otherwise you taint your new one with your unresolved jealousy/hate/resentment carried over.
This is a weird song, it makes me all nostalgic and reminiscing of a past I simply do not have... because I have never been in a relationships and started afresh, so I can not possibly know how it feels like and yet the feeling it conveys is strangely familiar, without me having ever experienced it so far... for that reason, I often am almost afraid to hear this song again. IDK, hard to describe.
This is not my original idea, but I definitely think the reason we can relate to this kind of powerful ache, the "nostalgia," as you so aptly called it, is because most of us had our hearts and trust broken by our parents.
@@gretch8928 do you remember where you first saw/heard this theory? It makes perfect sense and I wonder how many "common sense" observations they've made. The end of a relationship isn't the only thing that could break somebody's heart. Kids can be brutal and cruel with each other. I mean, think of all the kids that get abandoned and/or left behind because their friend is now friends with the popular kids and don't want to be seen with you. Not only that but a broken promise, death, loosing a game, etc. Each of these examples have the ability to break a kid's heart and crush a their soul. (Sorry, I started to ramble lol 🤣🤣🤣)
When you listen to Kimbra's lyrics, you realise that Kimbra's part was actually representing the new love interest who was witnessing Gotye's inability to let go o the last girl. Creating a self-fulfilling prophesy and become the next "Somebody that I used to now"
I actually think its the person that left him. She makes a point to remind him of the way he acted in the past as the reason she left. Which honestly makes more sense, each of them is two sides of the same coin, and I say coin to describe the relationship, they both have different opinions on the way things went down.
At first, covered in color, she was in the picture, at the end as the paint comes off, we realize that now she’s literally “out of the picture”. Some of the best pop symbolism ever.
Ya'll are so funny! Your faces during that and my dog was singing along with it;its one of her trigger songs. I love ya'll!!! Keep it happy and full of love as always!!!

I grew up around the time this was popular, i’m 23 now and love various genres of music, not including pop. Never been a fan of modern pop just a personal preference. But this song…is a masterpiece.
The guy wanted to demote her to "friends with benefits"... she said NOoooooo! He was surprised 🤣 Great song! Version with only the vocals is even more powerful!
The arrangement is pure magic , the lyrics beat and vocals are insane . And their one hit wonder was because they didn't sign up for the evil . Remember when Prince presented them with an award , the accolades from Prince probably more important to them than the actual award .
This song hits hard with me. My now ex-husband was cheating on me with my BEST FRIEND and ghosted me back when this song came out. Talk about being "triggered" when I hear this song. It still hurts, but great song of course
I've never been a relationship, but some of the lyrics and the portayal of the MV is how I feel about when I'm with my friends. I'm like the black sheep, the irregular puzzle piece, the stain in a painting.
Gotye, pronounced "gow · tee · ay" is an Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who, on occasion, performs solo, or in this case a duet. His full-time gig is with the group "The Basics". My analysis of the meaning of the song is different than most. There are 3 individuals depicted here. He and 2 women. He sings about the first one in his opening stanza. He told himself she was right for him but still felt lonely in her company and that's an ache he still feels to this day. He got addicted to the sadness of knowing it was going to end and when it did she promised they would still be friends. She lied, she just wanted to get away from him. Why? When they broke up she did everything she could to distance herself from him. He begins whining about how unfair and hurtful that was. He tries to comfort himself by saying he doesn't need that aggravation. Enter girl number 2, Kimbra. She got involved with him after his breakup with girl number 1. At this point, they have already separated. Why? He kept screwing her over and making her believe it was her fault. This is probably the same reason girl number 1 dumped him. She didn't want to live with someone like that. On top of that, he said he could let his breakup with girl number 1 go and "SHE WOULDN'T CATCH HIM HUNG UP ON SOMEBODY THAT HE USED TO KNOW". She could read into his words and actions that he obviously could not. So he dumped him too.
The back N' forth is epic and a great relic from the past...The real shit is that the vocals were recorded in his garage with a Sampler. Hey, if Dylan could have done he would've.
It spent almost 13 weeks at number 1 on the billboard chart and a year in top 25. A one hit wonder. Other songs off this album are cool just didn’t get traction. All sound sampling, synthesizer, keyboard, drums, and guitar. Doesn’t have a variety of sound.
I feel the painting represents that he was feeling whole prior to letting his heart out. The painting is a representation of the broken relationship. The more he sings the more he is brought back into his brokenness. As she starts to sing, she was still in that hurt and broken mess which is why she had to cut him off, her way of dealing with it. but she sees he is still the same broken person as he sings and confronts him to no avail. Once she realizes things have not changed, she removes herself emotionally.
when Kimbra sings "...somebody that you used to know" i always get the feeling that hes going to say something like...ok ok but i dont like people shouting to me face.. or something like that 😂
Its deeper than you might think guys, watch it again. Watch as they turn to fragments, as the relationship broke them apart not only as a couple, but as individuals. The only way she could become whole again was by walking away.... but he remains shattered, in pieces.

Bit more than that I reckon. Best pop since peak MJ and Madonna id say. Like thriller/like a prayer eras.
