The dialog before the song: "do you have any last wishes?" "yeah, the song from the super perforator ad!" It's catchy because it's advertisement 😂 Edit: changed the spelling. Never trust autocorrect.
It's "perforator" (German "Locher") - a device used to make holes into paper to put them into a binder/folder. It is funny, because the song calls a gun like this, which also makes holes.
@@m.h.6470 Knowing Bully, I bet the original script intended "Penetrator" instead but I guess that would have skyrocketed the age rating from a modest 0 / 6 to 18+ 😅
5:10 The running gag here is that the Big Bad is running his gang like a kindergarten or grade school teacher steers their class, firmly but kindly... No screaming or histrionics from him. Note how the scene is a carbon copy from scenes of Italo Westerns like "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" ore "Once Upon a Time in the West"...
There's a scene where they ask him to bring back a present for them and they phrase it like a German chocolate ad ("kinderschokolade"): something sweet, something to play with, etc. To which, after a short dramatic stare-down, he replies: "Better eat an apple instead."
Till this day "Der Schuh des Manitu" is still the most successful german movie in german cinemas with around 11,7 million visitors. Second place is, you guessed it, "(T)Raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1" with 9,1 million visitors. Every german knows these movies, even if they don't like them.
- Same name, but the movie was seen by far less people in Germany in cinemas upon its release, which is the metric compared in the above comment.
The German writer Karl May wrote several adventure books about the wild west in the US and also about the Middle East. Some of his books were made into movies in the 1960's. Main character of several books are Winnetou and Old Shatterhand. May is writing books from the perspective of his alter ego Old Shatterhand. This went so far that many people actually believed that he really was Old Shatterhand, what is not true. But he was a really popular writer, so most Germans know his books or at least the main ones from the movies. "Der Schuh das Manitu" is a parody on these movies from the 60's and Winnetouch and Ranger are representing Winnetou and Old Shatterhand in this movie. And they used real native Americans in the movie. There weren't any in the 1960's movies I think.
Der Schuh des Manitu was shot in Spain. Bully wanted to do a parody of the Karl May movies and at the same time a parody of some of the iconic western movies from Sergio Leone. As for the Native Americans, the chief Listiger Lurch is an actor, who was born in India and now lives in Germany.
About the Superperforator. Santa Maria (guy in the suit) and his goons have captured the good guys and plan to kill them. Santa asks them if they have a last wish. Winnetouch goes: "Yes, the song from the Superperforator-Ad". And they just break out dancing. One of the funniest scenes in the whole movie.😂
For anyone interested Tried my best to translate the trailer :) Text on screen: "The myth is alive" "The legend is coming back" Narrator: "In a time where blood brotherhood wasn't just a word, there was an adventure that would change history forever" "Indians!" "Hello!" "You're making coffee" * Howling in the background * "What's that?" "A caffeinated hot drink" "Abahachi, my brother!" "Dark clouds are rising over the land where the shoshones are living" "Where is my gold" "Don't interrupt him, you asshole" * Complaining * "Always just arrows and shooting and it's so loud" Narrator: "A movie about big feelings" "The new movie made by Michael "Bully" Herbig" * In a bunny costume * "Should I try to distract them again?" Narrator: "Manitous Shoe" * Jumping on horse * In pain "My brother" Narrator "Spring 2001 only in cinema" I think almost everyone in Germany has seen this movie or heard of it. Michael Bully Herbig is a great comedian and a lot of people love his work. While Traumschiff Surprise is a parody of Star Wars/Star Trek, Der Schuh des Manitu is a parody of the Winnetou movies which are based on the books by Karl May, who are also very popular in Germany, I'm not sure how popular they are elsewhere since they are german
Some details that I see not mentioned in the comments yet: - The characters in the film speak with a Bavarian accent to translate the “South American accent”. - The film is above all a parody of the old German Winnetou westerns based on the novels by Karl May. - Pierre Brice, who played the role of Winnetou in the original films, disagreed with this movie and publicly stated to Bully that he had no respect for the original films. - The films are sometimes criticized for their stereotypical portrayal of gay men. The same is true for Traumschiff surprise and other work of Bully.
Framing Winnetou and Old Shatterhand as gay couple is a joke as old as the Winnetou books and movies. Bully Herbig didn't do it as first, but he put it up to eleven.
@@robertheinrich2994 And the film doesn’t even say he’s gay, although it’s clearly implied. Winnetouch as a swishy/effeminate Native American is essentially a parody of the toxic masculinity of the old Winnetou films.
I saw this movie in a cinema and I pissed myself in laughter. One of the things that makes this movie so hilarious is the fact, that the actor who plays the character of Santa Maria (the tall greyhaired guy in black clothes and the black hat), Sky du Mont, used to be booked in boring german crime shows like "Derrick", "Der Alte" and so on, playing serious and honestly blend characters with absolutely no humour in it. And here he kind of plays with his image of the serious actor and delivers some great one-liners like "So, jetzt geht nochmal jeder aufs Klo und dann reiten wir los!" which means something like "Right... now everyone goes to the loo and then we'll be riding off!"
Santa is the best bit of the movie. When he drowns in the mud at the end he only complains: Das krieg ich doch nie wieder raus! I’ll never get these stains off!
My family and I quote the Klo thing almost every time we leave somewhere (and other lines from this movie and Traumschiff in general). Very iconic and quotable movies
My favorite quotes of the movie: „Schau Schau, Schoschonen“ „Jetzt nimmt sich jeder noch ein Eis, und dann reiten wir los“ ( I use that quite often) „Jetzt aber Raus hier, Jetzt aber Raus hier, Jetzt aber Haus hier..“
"Der Schuh des Manitu" is the actual classic. There hadn't been a movie this funny and well done in a long time in germany. Unfortunately it doesn't translate well to english. The use of dialects and puns for example. But this was a big hit. Everyone went to see it. "Traumschiff Surprise" came later and sort of benefited from the success of "Der Schuh des Manitu". More Cameos, more silly characters from Michael Bully Herbigs TV show called "Die Bullyparade". That show was basically lots of sketches, most of them very silly, but also quite original. Michael Bully Herbig, Rick Kavanian and Christian Tramitz invented unique and fresh characters that grew over time. The TV Show and both movies - all of it kind of builds on the silly universe Michael Bully Herbig and his coworkers created over years.
Hello, I was here in Cologne at the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the speaker was Sky Dumont (the villain here). A man in the audience started chanting "ask your local weapon trader for the superperforator" and the audience laughed away. Greetings Angie, who watched the film more than once
And perforator here means the weapon, that is supposed to make holes in everything it shoots, so it's perforating everything. It's the "Super Perforator". That's not a usual name for a "gun", they used it just here in this movie. From the context it's clear what it means. And I don't remember any other songs in that movie. It might be the only song. It was no musical. And this makes it stand out even more, it's just crazy, it doesn't fit, it's like a joke that you would never expect. The dark person with no sense of humor (well, usually when there is such a person in a movie) plays a commercial song as the last whish... And it was very very exaggerated, he didn't just say it, didn't just sing it, he played it with two other people as a perfect live commercial dance performance (from the perspective of the victims) (they made this song for this movie only).
And the person who asks for this commercial is played as a very naive person who doesn't know what's going on, doesn't know that this might be the last minute of his life, everything is just fun, everything is kindergarden... And the two others beside him are played in this situation like they don't know what to think about that, could that change their inevitable fate? But how? They rather think, OK, that's it, it would be over quickly anyways... So, the two others look rather sceptical while the naive person anjoys it... That's another part of the crazy thing that's going on there ;-) And we as the audience know that this is not the first joke in this movie, it will go on, we just don't know yet how they will survive, but OK, let's enjoy this crazy funny commercial performance... It's a fun movie anyways, no danger, enjoy it.
And in other parts of this movie, the two more rational guys often think and say something like "oh no, another crazy idea of this (naive) guy, he constantly brings us into dangerous situations..." And somehow they can escape from these situations, but in that situations they often have crazy conversations like "look what you have done" (maybe when they end up tied to a stake, literally), the response might be something silly and unrelated like this with a big happy smiling face, looking up to the sky: "but it's nice weather anyways" (something like that. I don't know if they really say exactly that in one case, but it's like this). It's a fun movie... Don't think too much about it, just enjoy it... Yes, that's difficult just with subtitles... There should be English / American movies like that...
@@richard--s there's another song - "Lebkuchenherz" when Abahachi regains consciousness after having been shot, and it becomes clear that the stale Lebkuchenherz he was carrying around saved his life because the bullet got stuck in it
The film was recorded in Oasys Mini Hollywood in Tabernas, Almería, Spain. It was technically the film set for the 1965 movie For a Few Dollars More, which has later been converted to a theme park, but it's still used as a stage for Old West movies until today. But the landscape is not CGI generated, it's all true. It's just not America, but the Spanish desert.
If I recall the DVD-commentary correctly, the film was shot in spain, with some local extras as native americans (with the exception of the two tall chief's right and left hands), none of which spoke any German or English. Many Italian westerns were shot in Spain, as well as Conan, The Barbarian.
6:34 The scene is in the movie. Gangster Santa Maria granted his captives One Last Wish. Winnetouch (hero Abahachi's gay twin brother) wanted to hear the Superperforator jingle.
Mert, your reaction videos are pure gold. Plus I like the scottish accent. You are right to think the german subtitles are a shame. My offer: let me know which video you want to react to and I happily will provide you with a good translation.
EVERY German knows "Der Schuh des Manitu"! 😅 It's actually a parody specifically on the Winnetou "Germano Western" movies that were filmed entirely nowhere near America and after novels written by a German called Karl May who never ever visited America... (Still totally iconic Westerns in central Europe known by most Germans...)😄
Yes, the Winnetou movies were filmed in Croatia (at that time it was a psrt of Yugoslavia). It is not so far from Germany, a bit easier to make it and the scenery is good, different from how Germany usually looks like, more rocks, more mountains, but still manageable. It might look a bit like the mountainous area in the US Midwest, a bit. But I have no idea where "Der Schuh des Manitu" (The shoe of Manitou) was filmed...
was looking for this comment. I still remember Pierre Brice beeing pissed about this parody and to this day I can´t believe how serious he took his role of Winnetou in something we in Germany call "Spaghetti-Western" 😂
@@ileana8360 I mean, Pierre Briece was the most successful Frenchman in German cinema for decades….of course he‘d tale Bully‘s parody of him and Old Shatterhand‘s bromance personally! Karl May wrote those novels while in prison, so the accuracy, or lack thereof, was never in question!
@@ileana8360 The Karl May movies aren't spaghetti- or italowestern. They have clear heros as protagonists, just like the early US western. Italowestern use anti-heros or even villains as protagonists.
It is a parody of the REALLY big Winnetou westerns back from the 1960s (based on Karl May, a German author of the late 19th century, who wrote about Native American and Oriental cultures a lot in the then popular escapist Orientalist mindset - without ever having set foot in said countries, of course). The most hilarious thing in this movie is that the main characters speak with a heavy Bavarian accent, and one speaks with a heavy Greek accent and syntax (or at least with what we believe to be a Greek accent and syntax)… It‘s about like staging a Western with Cockney or Pakistani actors or something like that…
It's pretty safe to say every German born before 1995 has seen this movie. I must have watched it about five times just in cinemas during the year of release alone. I was 13 at the time and thought it was the most hilarious thing ever. I would put it well above "Traumschiff Surprise" in both popularity and (especially) cultural impact. It is very quotable - "Ich bin mit der Gesamtsituation unzufrieden" is one that stuck with me into adulthood. It should be noted that, while there are also nods to classic American and Italo western, it primarily parodies a specific brand of German western from the late 1960s, which was based on western novels written by German author Karl May. Those films, just like the novels they were based on, have always been quite popular in Germany and formed a vital part of German popular culture for multiple generations. There were alomst all centered around two main characters, a young Apache chief and a white guy who ended up becoming friends and even blood brothers with him. The main protagonists of "Der Schuh des Manitu" were very obvious parodies of those characters.
Absolutely! Like most, I absolutely loved Schuh des Manitu and tried not to have too high expectations for (T)raumschiff Surprise, but nevertheless, it was underwhelming. Funny, sure, but not as brilliant by a long shot.
Few of our generation might not have seen that one... 😂😂😂 Indeed it was a parody of the German Winnetou westerns of the 60s with Lex Barker and Pierre Brice. As for the locations... Bully told in a making of that they shot around Almería, Spain, where Sergio Leone shot his 60s Spaghetti Westerns... 😉 I also know that they dubbed the movie in English for the international market, trying to capture the German humour, so maybe you can get your hands on that somehow 😊 Thanks for picking it, esp since its humour abt gay people is seen as rather inappropriate today... 🙈
I grew up on Sergio Leone Italo Westerns and had a huge crush on Clint Eastwood from the Handfull Dollar Trilogy…. Never mind the fact that I was 13 in 1993, and Clint Eastwood, at that tome was 63! This wouldn’t HAPPEN TODAY WITH THE INTERNET! I was blissfully unaware how he looked in 1993! 🥰🤣😬
I admire your patience in watching such films and reading constantly. The special thing about the film is that Old Shatterhand and Winnetou and his gay brother speak Bavarian, unlike all the other actors. This creates a special humour that is probably lost in the English translation. Best Regards from Bavaria..😊😊
I still wish the original actors would have spoken the dubbing. You can find some clips they used to test this on UA-cam and the accent is hilarious. They decided to use professional, american dubbers instead.😢
Servus! You need to watch the Bully Parade to get an idea of the context ;) Michael Bully Herbig is one of the heads behind the famous show. It is a bit like SNL but also has its very own character and many of the skits they created in the bully parade have been turned into full blown movies. So they have been parodising many different formats inside the bully parade and then they turned those into movies later on as they got a lot of traction. Cheers, mach weiter so
there's a version dubbed into english: "manitou's shoe", but apparently it's not great. not easily translatable without ruining the jokes. but that's the same when english gets dubbed into german
True…I‘ve stopped watching dubbed English movies in 10th grade when I got fluent enough to recognize the words from the mouthmovements and could tell the German translation is off…I‘m a bit special like that…I cannot stand it!

Yes and no, some dubbed movies are much more hilarious than the original. Best examples are the Bud Spencer/Terence Hill movies. "Hat dir schon mal jemand mit 'nem Vorschlaghammer 'nen Scheitel gezogen.... Zeitlos"
Yeah - try to translate "wo die Schoschonen schön wohnen" without losing anything. And there's so much of these types of things in the movie, it's just but doable imo.
I don't think I would have ever imagined a Scot reacting to Schuh des Manitu-Trailers! That is a hilarious mix of accents 😄 I don't know if you could truly get the movie without knowing the old Karl May movies about the Apache-chief Winnetou and his friend/bloodbrother Old Shatterhand. They are probably a staple for every German who's at least ... thirty? I'd guess. Anyway, bit of a long rant ahead and since you asked about whether there are still movies made like this: I don't know any recent German movie that plays around like that. It's tricky because you don't want to truly offend the original work (I mean...or maybe you do?) when it was a well-loved franchise or movie. Also, some jokes just didn't age well. One where it worked really well is the movie Galaxy Quest from 1999, which found the exact balance for absolute Star Trek fans, making lovingly fun of the tropes and the fans but not offending. If you never saw it, you should check it out. But it truly helps if you know the basics around Star Trek ;-) Which is another thing about parodies - you should know the basics of the original to get the most enjoyment out of it. Karl May wrote books about that imagined Apache-chief and Old Shatterhand and because it was the times of the times, the chief was a noble, thoughtful, great person because that was a bit of his trademark: creating "noble wild men" to teach the rough, mean, money-loving and bloodthirsty white men how to be better. It was easy black-and-white narration - good guys, bad guys, a damsel in distress (sometimes male damsels but usually accompanied by female ones) and the chief and his friend save everyone - yoohoo. It was very popular and even today, there's live-plays during summer in two places in Germany where the different books are acted out, with real horses and shooting (no real bullets) and all kinds of fun things to watch. So the writer, actor + director Bully Herbig had a TV-sketch-comedy show with two friends and it had a segment whith Winnetou and Shatterhand, usually making fun of the tropes from the original movies, spoken in Bavarian accents. They were a big hit on the show and so they wanted to make a real movie of it. But they weren't allowed to use the real names from the books (or maybe they didn't want to in the first place 🤷♂) so they called the main characters "Ranger" and "Abahachi". Abahachi is already a fun name because a recurring character in the original books was the half-Native American/half-white young woman named "Apanachi". I am unsure whether explaining the basis of the jokes actually helps to get them. *shrug* So anyway.
Infact many Western movies back then were made in Andalusia or parts of Croatia and Yugoslavia. "Der Schuh des Manitu" is a comedic Hommage to these movies and still one of the best german movies ever made. In Germany traditionally its on TV at Silvester or new Year.
The movie is even a few months older than me and yet I watched it up and down as a child, just like the original with the Winnetou trilogy and the additional films, even watched the festival in Bad Segeberg several times Already looking forward to next year's sequel "Das Kanu des Manitu"
Seven year old me loved this movie so much that I asked my mom for an Abahachi costume for carneval. The creators of this movie are still making movies, most of them based on fan favourite recurring characters in the scetch show "Bullyparade" they created in the late 90ies. The guy playing Abahachi and Winnetouch, Michael "Bully" Herbig is the director, producer and writer of those movies. The most recent was 2017s Bullyparade - Der Film. Bully has also worked on more serious movies and childrens movies. He's even the German voice actor of Kuzco from The Emperor's New Groove, Fender from Robots and Woody from Toy Story.
It's LEGEND! Yeah! The "Superperforator" is a handgun, like the "peacemaker", and this gentleman with white hair is the salesman of it. So.. he sells more handguns when singing the superperforator-song - advertisement!
The movie is a parody of all the movies based on the Wild West novels by Karl May. Mainly his most famous characters Winnetou (portrayed by Michael "Bully" Herbig as Apahachi and his twin brother Winnetouch) and Old Shatterhand (portrayed by Christian Tramitz as Ranger). The Greek Dimitri played by Rick Kavanian already existed in their TV comedy show Bullyparade as the host in a series of talk show sketches. His trademark is to get idioms wrong and switch the order of words in a sentence.
"Der Schuh des Manitu" as well as "(T)Raumschiff Surprise" are based on characters on the "Bullyparade", a Sketch Show by and with Michael "Bully" Herbig, aired from 1997 to 2002. 1990's to 2000's was quite a "Peak Season" for german Sketch- and Comedy Shows: Switch (1997 - 2000), Die Wochenshow (1996 - 2002), RTL Samstag Nacht (1993 - 1998), Schmidteinander (1990 - 1994), Switch Reloaded (2007 - 2012) etc.
There was also a musical based on the movie running in Germany. The actor of the "bad guy" Santa is Sky Dumont, a very well known actor who also played a quite big part in "Eyes wide shut".
The key thing to understand about Germans is that (T)Raumschiff Surprise and Schuh des Manitu are both so famous and contain so many iconic lines that people have simply adopted tons of quotes from them into their everyday language and only remember where they come from when they re-watch the movies. They are two of the highest-grossing German movies ever made, which really says a lot.
The films that are being Made fun of are the “Winnetou” films from the 60s and 70s Based on novels by Karl May. He was a very prolific and popular author in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Thing was, he was a real impostor. He was very talented at writing adventure novels and actually made people believe that he had visited all these places and learned about the cultures authentically, which was not the case. People even believe that he had experienced the adventures himself. given the fact that he had only read About the wild West, his books were actually still pretty good. Lots of kids read them until maybe the 90s? The “Winnetou” Films star an Apache called Winnetou And his best Caucasian friend by the name of old Shatterhand. In those movies they have this really Great friendship and great bond, they are valiant and never fail morally. All Germans basically grew up with these films and love them, but they’re actually really cheesy. (Hitler used to like them, too.) Native American culture is also not portrayed authentically. The word. Manitu” Is supposed to Be the word for God, but I doubt that native people use it today. When “der Schu des Manitou” Came out, they were actually some people being annoyed with their childhood memory being made fun of. Basically, those films were the only occasion it was ok for a boy to cry. so that’s the background for you.
I've never even heard of Traumschiff surprise, but one of my school teachers made us watch this one when we were 11 or 12. I remember nothing about this movie except the pink dressed person.
I remember in the Making Of of this movie the creator said with a straight face: "We gave it a lot of thought translating the story into German and gave them a Bavarian accent because, well.... they're southeners"
The parody only tangenly aimed at the old western movies from the US. It was specifically aimed at a series of movies from Germany that put Novels by Karl May into movies. These novles were a romantisation of the Wild West by an author who basically wrote them on hearsay alone. The German movie series even at the time they were made were basically in the category so bad that they become good again. In our time and day we would consider them outragously dated (both novels and movies). But in the early 2000s out of Bully's audience pretty much everyone would know the source material he was makeing fun of.
The scene where villain Santa Maria first appears is probably the most awesomest villain introduction scene ever created on film! "INDIANER!" - "Servus!" - cue Rage music clip.
This movie is by far more popular than Traumschiff surprise. Unfortunately, a lot of the comedy relies on wordplay and how things are being said.. It is almost impossible to transfer that to another language.
Another little anecdote: When I first saw the movie, the main villain, with his mixture of elegance, arrogance and condescencion, gave me somehow "Argentinian vibes". Later, in an interview with Herbig, I heard that he had asked the actor in question (Sky DuMont), if he could ride a horse. He answered: "I was raised in Argentina, of course I can ride!" Later yet, I found out that's not true. He was born in Argentina and lived there until he was three years old, and honestly, that he would nevertheless claim to have been raised there is the most Argentinian thing I can think of.
Happy to see you enjoying this 😂 yes, it has a lot from Monty's humor, plus they use some bavarian slang which gives the jokes a special flavour. Bully was just one of many slapstick artists at that time, and they're really really good. Their ability of parody, slapstick, as well as their ideas were so brilliant. It was Fridays when there were even a few shows in a row, and you'd have to laugh your head off .. One of the last ones was "switch reloaded" a parody of all kinds of TV shows and VIPs. ( f.i. Heidi Klum) Today, there is not as much slapstick any more but there's some cabaret going on.
If I remember the song scene correctly. It's jingle from an advertisement for a firearm. In the scene the villain asks the good guy he has at his mercy. "Any last wish?" And one of them response. "Yes, the song from the super perforator spot.", cue the villain and performing the song.
Thing is, ... it actually adds some layers of funniness because the main actors are speaking with a thick Bavarian accent. I mean sure, there is some real funny stuff going on... but it's the accent. By all means.
So to explain this we have to go far back in time: At the end of the 19th Century there was a German dude called Karl May (1842-1912), who wrote some quite succesful Western novels about the German Immigrant Old Shatterhand and his blood brother Winnetou, a Chief of the Apache tribe, who experienced many adventures in the Old West. He claimed that those books were based on true events and that he was Old Shatterhand himself. Meanwhile he never set foot into the US until he was an old man, long after he published his books. He actually was a conman in his youth and even spent some time in prison for it. Nonetheless his books were quite popular for many generations and inspired a series of movies based on his novels in the 1960's and 70's. Those movies were also quite popular and inspired Michael "Bully" Herbig and his ensmeble from the show "Bullyparade" to make a parody of those movies in the early 2000's, which is "Der Schuh des Manitu" and it became the most commercially successful German movie
special appreciation for "wo die schoschonen schöner wohnen". it's dumb but the delivery is so ridiculously perfect (where the shoshones live prettier. schöner wohnen, living prettier, is a german home remodeling show)
Ever since I was a child this has been my absolute favorite movie. I know most of the lines and spent years perfecting my Winnetouch impression. If I'm not mistaken Der Schuh des Manitu is the highest grossing German production in German cinema history 5:49 that's me if I ever end up in a situation like that. I'd die laughing, knowing I crossed something off my bucket list
One of the comedic elements is also that the characters often talk in bavarian/southern german dialect and not high german as they would in a normal movie That is also what the „Servus“ in the beginning was about: it is bavarian dialect and means „Hello“
The last clip is iconic in Germany! 😂❤️💯 Several times when I was watching the movie with my father back in the day, we replayed it (this scene) so many times. 😅
A little known fact: When the villan is seen the first time, there is some music written by Peavy Wagner and Victor Smolski from the german metal band Rage. The favorite band of Stefan Raab btw^^ The song is "Straight to Hell"
"John hat von meinem Tellerchen gegessen!" "John hat in meinem Bettchen geschlafen!" "John hat sich meinen Kugelschreiber in den Popo gesteckt" - Tja, das ist John!🤣
Thanks for looking into this movie, still love it and can only laugh out loud at all the quotes from the movie in the comments. Now I have to watch it again^^
The three main actors of traumschiff surprise and schuh des Manitu are Michael "bully" Herbig, Christian Tramitz and Rick Kavanian. They became famose in the late 90's with their comedy show called "bullyparade". These movies were created after the show ended and are based on caracters and sketches in that show. Nowadays Michael Herbig is the Moderator of the german version of last one laughing, Christian Tramitz played a police officer in a criminal series a few years ago, and on Rick i totaly lost track.
and my favorite quote: ich bin mit der Gesamtsituation unzufrieden" -> "i am unsatisfied with this whole situation" in a conversation both the main characters bound to a pole to be killed and discussing their relationship. This phrase i use often in normel conversations when it fits and everyone knows it and laugh... its a real german pop culture slang...
The problem is that they speak with a Bavarian accent, which is a large part of the comedy's humor - this makes translation difficult and as a result a lot gets lost in the subtitle!
I was at the premiere of the film at the Cinedom (cinema) in Cologne. We laughed our asses off back then. The leading actor and director Bully Herbig was also there and said a few words.
This is more of a parody of German or European Westerns than of American Westerns. Of Winnitou, Old Shatterhand and Karl May, who wrote these Westerns without ever having been to the USA, but rather the way he imagined the West in the 19th century, because most of his readers had never been there either. His novels and "stories" were staged and festivals organized. In the 1960s, they were made into films with Pierre Brice, Lex Barker, Stewart Granger, mostly shot in Yugoslavia. Ironically, Karl May did not know the USA and Canada and they still do not know Karl May to this day, nor Winnitou, although he is the most famous Native for the people here.
The first time I saw this movie, I didn't believe my eyes. I literally was sitting there for the better part of the movie like "ok, wait, did I REALLY just hear/see that?" - second time around I laughed my butt off. These days, I'm grinning like a loon and do that Leo Di Caprio meme thing (the pointing one) every few minutes, every time one of my favorite quotes or scenes comes up.
I think it was filmed in Croatia, where the original Winnetou films had been filmed as well. Winnetou was the main character in Karl May's famous books, written well over a century ago by a guy who has never been to the US and had very romantic ideas about cowboys and natives. His books were so famous, his work had a deep impact on germans idea of what an "Indianer" looks and behaves like. Then they were adapted to film in the 70/80s, which gave them very distinctive visuals. Then of course globalization happened and romatic dreams met real life.
Parts of the movie were filmed on location, true. It was in Spain (and Morocco, I think), though, not in the USA. In the 60s - 80s, the "Italo Western" was extremely popular in Germany, but also all of the Karl May-Movies (Winnetou). This parody cleverly combines the clichés of these Westerns with slapstick humor. A few of the jokes aged poorly (Native Americans / "Indians" is a touchy subject, after all), but I still love this movie, and whenever it's aired and I come across it, I rewatch it. Apparently they are doing a second part right now. I'm curious how they will handle the sensitive subject of indigenious peoples and sincerly hope they do them justice and don't make fun of them. In this part, the N. A. were not mocked, per se, rather the "Western movie clichès" as a whole. They also tried to use indigineous actors as much as possible (although a few of them are of Spanish and Mexican descent, as far as I remember) and tried to get one of the native languages as correct as possible.

It should also be mentioned that the movies in the 1960 where shot in Yugoslavia at the time!
Also important that afaik Karl May never set a foot into the US, so it's all inspired from stuff he heard from other people.
@@HDreamer
Yes and no.
He wrote it without being in the US. True.
But he traveled to the USA in 1908 at the age of 66 and published Winnetou IV.
In ‘Der Schuh des Manitu’, only the chief’s two companions are real Native Americans, and the chief is Indian. The rest are Spanish.

Some details that I see not mentioned in the comments yet:
- The characters in the film speak with a Bavarian accent to translate the “South American accent”.
Thank you :) Most valuable comment!!!
the films are critizised for their gay-stereotypes. but the only ones that matter are gay people, and they usually loved it.
Framing Winnetou and Old Shatterhand as gay couple is a joke as old as the Winnetou books and movies. Bully Herbig didn't do it as first, but he put it up to eleven.

I watched it several times since then and still its funny af😃
Santa is the best bit of the movie. When he drowns in the mud at the end he only complains: Das krieg ich doch nie wieder raus! I’ll never get these stains off!

A man in the audience started chanting "ask your local weapon trader
for the superperforator" and the audience laughed away. Greetings Angie, who watched the film more than once
In the scene the villain asks: a last wish? and then Winnitouch says: the song from the superperforator comercial
@@richard--s the "Super Perforator" is actually the bullet, not the gun
And the person who asks for this commercial is played as a very naive person who doesn't know what's going on, doesn't know that this might be the last minute of his life, everything is just fun, everything is kindergarden...
And the two others beside him are played in this situation like they don't know what to think about that, could that change their inevitable fate? But how? They rather think, OK, that's it, it would be over quickly anyways...
So, the two others look rather sceptical while the naive person anjoys it... That's another part of the crazy thing that's going on there ;-)
And we as the audience know that this is not the first joke in this movie, it will go on, we just don't know yet how they will survive, but OK, let's enjoy this crazy funny commercial performance... It's a fun movie anyways, no danger, enjoy it.
And in other parts of this movie, the two more rational guys often think and say something like "oh no, another crazy idea of this (naive) guy, he constantly brings us into dangerous situations..."
And somehow they can escape from these situations, but in that situations they often have crazy conversations like "look what you have done" (maybe when they end up tied to a stake, literally), the response might be something silly and unrelated like this with a big happy smiling face, looking up to the sky: "but it's nice weather anyways" (something like that. I don't know if they really say exactly that in one case, but it's like this).
It's a fun movie...
Don't think too much about it, just enjoy it...
Yes, that's difficult just with subtitles... There should be English / American movies like that...

It's actually a parody specifically on the Winnetou "Germano Western" movies that were filmed entirely nowhere near America and after novels written by a German called Karl May who never ever visited America...

It is a parody of the REALLY big Winnetou westerns back from the 1960s (based on Karl May, a German author of the late 19th century, who wrote about Native American and Oriental cultures a lot in the then popular escapist Orientalist mindset - without ever having set foot in said countries, of course). The most hilarious thing in this movie is that the main characters speak with a heavy Bavarian accent, and one speaks with a heavy Greek accent and syntax (or at least with what we believe to be a Greek accent and syntax)… It‘s about like staging a Western with Cockney or Pakistani actors or something like that…
Yesss!!! Best comment :D

Yeah - try to translate "wo die Schoschonen schön wohnen" without losing anything. And there's so much of these types of things in the movie, it's just but doable imo.
Der Schuh des Manitu had 11.7 million viewers in the cinema with a revenue of 65 million Euros, making it the most successful german movie since WWII.
But it truly helps if you know the basics around Star Trek ;-)
Which is another thing about parodies - you should know the basics of the original to get the most enjoyment out of it.
I would see it more as a homage than a parody. Sure it's comedy but there's so much love and praise for old western movies.
Infact many Western movies back then were made in Andalusia or parts of Croatia and Yugoslavia.
"Der Schuh des Manitu" is a comedic Hommage to these movies and still one of the best german movies ever made.

Of course, Hitler used to like the books, the films hadn’t been made yet.
Seen this in the cinema, have it on VHS and can watch it on UA-cam/Google TV...I am 2 clicks away of starting movie right now 😂
The parody only tangenly aimed at the old western movies from the US.
Germany has got a lot of funny movies. 💪🏼
The scene where villain Santa Maria first appears is probably the most awesomest villain introduction scene ever created on film!
"INDIANER!" - "Servus!" - cue Rage music clip.
The bean thing comes from the 17th century. The saying refers to blue beans with stands for weapons ammunition
Funniest german movie ever! For me on one level with monty python, though prettie different in the style of humor
It's more Mel Brooks than Monty Python.
This movie is by far more popular than Traumschiff surprise. Unfortunately, a lot of the comedy relies on wordplay and how things are being said.. It is almost impossible to transfer that to another language.
The movie is so popular and famous in Germany that some quotes from the movie have found their way into the regular language.
Just watching the Trailer made me laugh all over. 🙋🏻♀️🎄😃 Großartig Bully Herbig🇩🇪
Definitely more popular than "Traumschiff Surprise", that one was a real hype for some time.
Everybody asked if you want Some Prosecco.. 😂..legendary...good old times
( f.i. Heidi Klum)
Today, there is not as much slapstick any more but there's some cabaret going on.
If I remember the song scene correctly. It's jingle from an advertisement for a firearm. In the scene the villain asks the good guy he has at his mercy. "Any last wish?" And one of them response. "Yes, the song from the super perforator spot.", cue the villain and performing the song.
I mean, he did grant them the last wish, so he is a villain who keeps his word. You have to respect that :D
It was a Parody of the old Mr Clean Song Commercial Song!
Btw. Old Shatterhand was a trapper rather than a ranger ;-)
@la-go-xy Yes but in the first place he was a surveyor for a railway company
special appreciation for "wo die schoschonen schöner wohnen". it's dumb but the delivery is so ridiculously perfect
(where the shoshones live prettier. schöner wohnen, living prettier, is a german home remodeling show)
"(...)and before the break of dawn we'll have you back where you belong - sprink(e)ling the lawn" 😅
Ever since I was a child this has been my absolute favorite movie. I know most of the lines and spent years perfecting my Winnetouch impression.
If I'm not mistaken Der Schuh des Manitu is the highest grossing German production in German cinema history
5:49 that's me if I ever end up in a situation like that. I'd die laughing, knowing I crossed something off my bucket list
One of the comedic elements is also that the characters often talk in bavarian/southern german dialect and not high german as they would in a normal movie
That is also what the „Servus“ in the beginning was about: it is bavarian dialect and means „Hello“
Yes the equivalent would be to have the "native" americans talk in a scottish accent, that would come close!
Im actually using the superperforator song as ringtone
The last clip is iconic in Germany! 😂❤️💯 Several times when I was watching the movie with my father back in the day, we replayed it (this scene) so many times. 😅
Damn i really have to rewatch this, it's pure dumb fun. 😂
As a boy I literally sat in front of my parents dvd player and replayed this part of the movie over and over, I was obsessed with that scene
There is an English dub for this film. For now, I only could find outtakes from it. The YT video is called "Der Schuh des Manitu Englische Synchro"
👏👏👏👏👏 I hope he sees this comment!!! :D
*Grabt den Klappstuhl aus* I love this movie it's so funny.
A little known fact: When the villan is seen the first time, there is some music written by Peavy Wagner and Victor Smolski from the german metal band Rage. The favorite band of Stefan Raab btw^^ The song is "Straight to Hell"
You definitely should watch the full movie! I watched it at the cinema twice and still think it's one of the best parodies ever.
"John hat von meinem Tellerchen gegessen!" "John hat in meinem Bettchen geschlafen!" "John hat sich meinen Kugelschreiber in den Popo gesteckt" - Tja, das ist John!🤣
they speak Bavarian because in a western you have to have "southern accent" ^^
We went to the theatre to see that movie with the whole family. I was 13 back then and couldn't stop laughing. It was so much fun.
Thanks for looking into this movie, still love it and can only laugh out loud at all the quotes from the movie in the comments. Now I have to watch it again^^
I am from Austria and I liked the movie a lot.
Plus I really love your accent!!
OMG it happened! It's here!!!! :D I never clicked so fast on a video 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was at the premiere of the film at the Cinedom (cinema) in Cologne. We laughed our asses off back then. The leading actor and director Bully Herbig was also there and said a few words.
3 min ago, dang.
And of course! I’ve seen that movie multiple times. It’s great
It is suuuuuper popular. Please go watch it entirely!
Winnetou
If you want to watch this movie english dubbed you have buy the extra large dvd (the red one) the blue dvd/blu-ray is geman only.
"Langsam Jaqueline, sonst kotzt du wieder!" 😂😂😂
