You make me wanna take singing lessons lol
I like how this pinned comment from the uploader has 5 likes but a lot of comments on this video has 100 times more😂
I thought it was Baa baa black sheep
I’m in love with u
The way he pronounces eee is like every aussie
Kimbra's vocal on this always gives me goosebumps. There's so much feeling in there, especially when they both go into the chorus together. Her 'somebody' is perfection against his 'that I used to know'.

Beth I love plain gold ring
@@BethRoars I saw Kimbra live in Brussels, she's amazing. Got to know her thanks to her duet with Gotye.
@@BethRoars Gotye's 42 today!
When he’s singing lyrics, she is harmonizing. When she’s singing musics, he’s harmonizing. It reminds me very much of a couple trying to communicate and failing. She’s crying out and he’s not listening, and he cries out and she doesn’t listen. Not sure I’d that was the intention. But it pulls my heartstrings for sure.
This was something we studied im school called Call and Response. A lot like Newton’s Law of Gravity “for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction”. Or even deeper kind of like a yin and yang feel.
Always been obsessed with songs that have this, not dependent of the genre. But even the Flowers Duet by Lakme was based on this causality of life.
The way he sings "somebody" is completely normal given that's the Australian way of pronouncing the word.
Yep, totally
egoisnotadirtyword The way he sings this song reminds me of Sting.
@@Voxshadow73 I've always thought he had a Sting sound to his voice. Agreed.
He is not australian
Jarnick Van Essen yes he is! Lol how would you explain him living here and having an Australian accent then?
Yes! The song was huge in the USA
Won a Grammy
I think it was huge everywhere in the world
@@rezku8808 Considering the music video has over a billion views, uhhh, yeah, it got fucking huge.
‘‘Twas bid in aus
Sabrina Ziyad sane over here in the UK, it blow up for a solid year, that’s all I heard
I think what Kimbra was doing with her hands is particularly interesting given this is a live performance, it's like how a cat uses her tail to keep her body in check, Kimbra is keeping her vocal control and emotional interpretation using her hands --- it's not for us, it's for her and the music.
I love when an artist is there to perform the music without concern for how she is seen, the honesty of her body work becomes entertainment because it's raw and not for show, but there it is and we see it and we feel as connected to the music through the body language of the performer as the performer herself is connected to it.
You nailed it!
I always looked at this song as a conversation between two ex-lovers that bumped into each other years later. They both go back and forth at a civil, casual tone. As they continue to talk, emotions flare and they begin to yell. It almost feels more like a 4 min play, than a song. Beautifully done
The "somebody" and "know" are totally sung/pronounced as we (Australian) would speak it. You hear Matt Corby pronounce it identically in the "Brother" reaction video too.
It's a shame that this is the only one of Gotye's songs that most people have ever heard. The first time I heard it I immediately thought, "I don't know who this guy is but I'm going to find out because he's the real deal." So I searched him on UA-cam and two hours later I think I finally came up for air. I ended up purchasing all 4 of his albums and listened to them pretty much exclusively for 3 or 4 months. And as much as I like this song I probably wouldn't even rank it among his 10 best after hearing everything else he's done. I truly believe he's one of the most gifted artists of our generation and he's deserves a lot more recognition than just what he's received from this one song.
His first album was killer but most people don’t know it because it wasn’t originally released internationally
The difference between great music and pop music is usually one thing, a worm. More specifically, an earworm. Pop music usually only contains an earworm and is mostly devoid of anything else interesting. Great music is usually deep and moving, but without the worm on the hook. Every once in a while the two coincide, and a piece of great music with a worm on a hook is created and sometimes it catches a fish. How big of a fish is purely up to chance... and some skill, but mainly not completely in the control of the artist or fisherperson.
I love this song because it's told from the narrative of the male intially, whom we are meant to sympathize for. His former love interest is painted as indifferent not having a heart. Kimbra's part fills in the second side of the story, which lyrics show the guy is no angel and was most likely a cad. I like in the context of this song it simple shows the complexity of any relationship, that there are two sides to every story.
The guy that cant let go... even though he doesn't 'need her love' still wants contact and she's over it and moved on... a story told over and over a billion times. (Just as easy to have gender reversal on the story, its a human story).
Not if you wrote letters and didn't see your lover for five years in person before marriage.
I need someone to react to kimbra's vocals more! She's amazing
Hey! Check out my reaction to Kimbra singing Plain Gold Ring here: ua-cam.com/video/hM66-32Attk/v-deo.html
I love how kimbra was literally feeling the vibe and expressing it with hand motions. Like she had it locked down in her mind perfectly and she was manifesting the sound along with the movements. Was interesting to see
I'm 70 and prefer 50's and 60's music, but this really grabbed me. Very unique.
Don't worry, your taste remains the same, the music is from 1967.
ua-cam.com/video/MSDl8w3wR2E/v-deo.html
Because it uses a sample from a 1967 song. That’s your answer.
Kimbra's vocalizations are always so pleasing to listen to.
What l love about this song besides the obvious musicality is that every line is something that everyone has thought or had thought about them it's probably the most relatable song I've ever heard..simply a masterpiece
Love them both. Great singers, unique artists in their own rights. And I love how Kimbra sings with her hands.

Best thing about this song is that it put Kimbra on my radar.
She's an amazing singer and deserves more commercial success.

absolutely a massive hit in America, still is fairly popular and played to this day.
Every time he opens up it takes me to the verge of crying.
When he hits the chorus i get goose bumps every time. Great reaction, thank you.
It was all over the place in America. They even covered it on the show Glee, which was hugely popular.
Couldn’t sleep one night ,heard this song ,and I listened to it over and over for about ,four hours, there is many great aspects of this song, very well done ,and it’s in somebody’s garage,I used to jam a lot when I was young and I swear garage music we really kicked it.!!!
I don’t quite understand why, I did not go crazy over this song until this particular video session came out. To me watching their body language as they sing brings this song for me to a whole new level! Kimbra and her movements just expand the song for me.
I just love this performance from Kimbra and Gotye. Never get bored of listening to it, it's just perfect in my ears.
This song went platinum in 9 different countries! Great video 👍🏼.
I love Kimbra so much she's so lovely and so down to earth. Huge fan here !!! Great content thank you !!!
I find it sad that this is the only song he’s known for. I get that he’s an Indie artist, and most of his music just isn’t of that popular sound, but man. He’s so talented, and people really should go listen to some of his other songs- Heart’s a Mess, Eyes Wide Open (unfortunately still very relevant, and more so with every passing year), State of the Art.... he’s got a lot of good music.
He’s an indie artist who just happened to have one runaway massive hit, but there’s so much more to his work. He’s so creative, a musical genius even- and used the Musical Fence in outback Qld for one of his songs- who else would do that?
His work is alright. The thing is that his albums are a mix of styles and all sorts of experimental, weird tracks. It's not for everyone and in this case, it's understandable one of the many, different songs he's put out, hit harder than the others.
Not true, he hates fame and being on stage. Also doesn’t care for the money. His work is all great, but this is one that stuck and stuck HARD in the public and I bet you he doesn’t like that this is what he’s known for, or that he’s so well known too. A lot of musicians that make actual good ad creative art don’t like the spotlight.
I’d say I feel bad for him that this song became so popular lol.
@@christopherkucia9029 he also didn't monetise his UA-cam channel, which given his billion plus views from somebody that j used to know would have made him millions... He also dosent give his music to commercials but instead to small movies for free and encourages people to make remixes of his music... What a man
He is on a band called The Basics, he's been active all this time
I love Kimbra. What a great voice, and she is quite lovely. Her hand movements are simply mesmerizing. Great song, great lyrics.
Can't believe this came out, what, 12 years ago? To me it feels like it was yesterday.
Another great job, Beth. This song caught everyone’s attention because of the the lyrics, the unusual voicing and instrumental setting, and the video. Like “Call Me, Maybe”, it has also been the basis for many song parodies, quite a few quite imaginative.
I must say that your look this morning (my time, at least) was refreshing. I got the feeling that you had just finished your morning cup of tea (or coffee?) and this was your first video of the day. I remember telling my wife of 37 years back when we were dating that she didn’t need a lot of makeup (or any, for that matter). I feel the same way about you. Your look is pure, just like your singing voice.
Keep up the good work. I almost always learn something, and I also enjoy seeing you get happy or rock out to songs that I know and love.
Def worth looking at more of his work like 'Hearts a Mess' , 'Save Me', and a special one called 'Quasimodo's Dream'
Gotye have lots of great songs! Twelve hours with a backseat driver is different, but good!
@@mammothmeat seeing it live with multiple rubber chickens was a highlight 🤣
Gotye has so many wonderful songs! He left the mainstream music industry because he didn't want to get bossed around and be forced to do stuff he didn't want to do.
But he is actually such a fantastic singer and his lyrics are great aswell!
You always brighten my days with your reactions 😊 this song was huge indeed, great analysis as always
Kimbra - "Plain Gold Ring" (Live at Sing Sing Studios) is the most amazing piece of singing you'll ever hear.
I'd love if someone responded to that performance. This song introduced me to Kimbra and all these years later I still really love her stuff.

Haven't heard this song in a while!
It was awesome to hear it again in the best way possible!
Kimbra deserves more love. Glad to see someone analysing her vocals.

With pure respect ...Coming across one of ur videos really brightens up my day.
The official music video is also VERY interesting. Very artsy. Very effective.
Amazing song, great breakdown.
This is why you're the coach and I'm but a humble student.
This song made my year I remember listening to that song all the time and I still do haha ❤️
Let me start by saying that Beth...You have an AMAZING talent yourself . I simply LOVE to hear you sing . I having experienced This type of break in this song up more times than I care to remember it holds a special place in my music repertoire mostly because they do it SO WELL . A bit of a tear jerk for me . Anyway PLEASE keep up the GREAT work and KNOW you have a huge fan in me . I wish I would hit the lotto for a huge amount So I could make sure you had the $$ backing you deserve .
I love her stance facing him sideways before her part it almost looks as they're re-enacting a scene
Aweome reaction! And I love that live performance :D
I really like the casual look!
UA-cam has that same video but with only the vocal tracks...her voice is absolutely amazing. His is incredible as well. Awesome song, and you're right, it was huge in the US. The harmony doesn't use pre recorded voices for the harmony, it's the 3rd person in the room...the vocal track only shows this.
Awesome vocals amazing song!!
Loved the review, loved your look and your voice Beth! My daughter and I are huge fans of yours! San Diego sends love 💕
New camera settings look great, a lot clearer and the lighting looks better too.
His recent live performance of it is even more amazing.
He released another one about a week ago and it’s also awesome
They are pretty powerful both performances but his voice sounds better in this live studio version
Thank you for a very enlightening discourse on this great song by two superb artists. I know less than nothing about the theory or construct of music but can appreciate the insight into their amazing interaction.
No worries! x
I’m watching this in 2020 still one of the best songs written/preformed!
I loved how they portray emotion in relationship in paint
Like him or not he’s among the most talented singers in the world, mad respect such a humble nice guy.
Do "Black" by Pearl Jam MTV Unplugged version, you won´t regret
Alejandro Garcia YEEESS
YES
This is the best live performance ever! Eddie V and his best!
I love that song, but the unplugged versión i fucking hate it.
I'm a simple man. I see Pearl Jam I press like.
Such a cool, poignant song. Strikes home hard for most people at one point in their life or the other. Yeah, the slow build up to the chorus is what gets me. Really gives it a lot of impact.
randomly stumbled upon your channel (your reaction to Tool - Sober) and am happy to have arrived. Really enjoying your insights and responses to vocal performances. Keep up the great work!
Kimbra is such a talented singer.
I like how you explain everything it makes it very interesting I was thoroughly surprised
Great song!
Never expected to be this one when I saw the title since I only have heard it but didn't know the title.
Thanks for your review!
I love the way they do that, your really good. Ty :))))))
Thanks, this is a great song. P.S. The female vocalist is Kimbra, not Kimbre. Now you could do Kimbra - Settle Down (live SXSW 2012 - Spotify Sessions)
or Billboard session!

Literally shocked you didn’t comment on her hand moments.... been wondering what that’s about for years
For a moment I thought she was playing a theremin :-D
Did u notice her hand movements were in sync with her words and the strength in which she was singing at the moment? She was feeling that music. She was one with it. I loved it. That's an artist.
*Gangsigns*
Its like what rappers do
@@MrJones-em7ub what are you talking about?
kimbras voice makes my soul cry and fall in love at the same time. for lack of a better way to explain it lol
Amazing song
I like the camera adjustments you've made Beth. The picture is much clearer and sharper. The lighting is also improved and seems less orange than previously. Love your videos and how you can appreciate the singer's technique regardless of genre. Looking forward to many more great videos and content. 😊
My first time watching you. I really felt u have the skills and the talent and knowledge to have this critique. Good Channel. I subscribed
He is the best singer ever 💚
Another aspect of this song exchange is how she is vocal in the last part as Gotye sings, as if she is stating “i don’t want to here about it, or talk to the hand”
Corey Taylor snuff live ???
That would be awesome!!
GRRRRT
Kimbra!!!!😍😍😍😍. I love everything about her, the voice, the way she literally feels the music. She’s just incredible
great review. Thank you.
That nostalgia is people who care about their craft
wow your so talented
one of the best songs ever made. legendary
Massive in Canada! Lovely song.
thank you, Beth!
Your eyes and ears just go to Kimbra. She is spectacular. Thanks great analysis.
Jeez, you’re amazing!
You nailed it wow
Really interesting breakdown
Why does this song invoke 'opera' feeling for me? Expecially when they are both singing together but at the same time in Opposition..reminds me of the flower duet and like. truely beautiful.
Cool, thanks from Australia. Now I:m off to find Kimbra Plain Gold Ring. (Big Fan of NC&TBS version obviously)
8 weeks no 1 in the US!! So yes it was HUGE in the US too!
The harmony was taken from a brazilian musician, Luis Bonfá. It came from Seville.
You are lovely, Beth. And you have a great voice.
OMG, so young! You look great, and I’m glad you like Kimora too.
Hes supremely underrated still a great song
I loved this song so much and now after my break up it means a lot more to me
Gotye's song was so popular that the radio station constantly played it to the point where he grew to hate it
This was huge in South Africa too!
I love how Kimbra is just chilling with her hands in her pockets till it's her turn to sing then she just absolutely loses herself in the music vibing
This guy's are fucking awesome.
You mention Australian style... I first came across it with Men at Work's album "Business as Usual".
There's a track on there called "Down by the Sea" (the best track on the album). You can hear that open, relaxed yet powerful Australian sound from 1982!
If you find that track & wonder what "yonnies" are it's an Australian word for a pebble that's just right for chucking. Not too big, not too small and a nice shape for the hand.
That's how it was explained to me.
I'm off to find the album version of Down by the Sea. It's absolutely beautiful!
She got some real talent .❤
This was massive hit everywhere........
wow, i have only ever seen the music video version and i finally get to see all of Kimbra's face
Hi Beth. Good reaction. Try to see Kimbra's other songs especially the ones she did in a studio. Love her songs.

Surprised Beth didn't make note of Kimbra's use of her hands in her singing.
hi just wanna say im glad you enjoyed IronMaiden Hallowed be thy name TY im a metal basist and enjoy your videos
I liked that one as well. That’s my favorite reaction of hers. As an Iron Maiden fan, I knew she was gonna dig those long notes at the beginning.
Check out California Dreaming form the Mama's and Papas... they to have amazing harmony!!
