The people of iran have not always been shia, only since Ismail 2nd conquered it and forced 12er shism as the state religion which was the smallest of all shia sects until that time. The zaidis were always the majority until that time, and are the most closet to Sunnis in terms of aqidah and fiqh etc.

The word "Jew" does not appear in the first five books of the Old Testament (the Jewish Torah).
The word Israelite is a tribe. Still no mention of Jew. A wee bit later the word "Hebrew". Read the Book where the Hebrew is first mentioned. It's used negatively, derogatory. Many scholars believe these Hebrews were perhaps Ethiopians. So Hebrews could be the (relatively) modern day N word.
Many of the Jews in the West, as well the majority who make up Israel today DO NOT have an ancestry bloodline in Hebraic Judaism.
But let's touch on the word "Semite" which NONE of these Jews either in Europe, America or Israel are. Semitic is ANYONE who do have an ancestral bloodline of the Middle East. Which Arabs are, As well Palestinians. So, if a make believe Jew calls you Anti-Semitic, they are in fact accusing as well being ANTI-ARAB.

Iran was not always Shia. It happened about 600 years back when Safavid dynasty took over Iran. Shiism did not become fully established until the reign of Abbas I of Persia (1587-1629). Abbas hated the Sunnis, and forced the population to accept Twelver Shiism. Thus by 1602 most of the formerly Sunnis of Iran had accepted Shiism.
I thought it was Shah Ismail who forced everyone to become Shia because he hated Turkish sunnis

Shah Ismail wasn't a twelver, he was of the Ghulat (extreme) Shia group known as the Qizilbash.
He was the son of the grand master of the Safaviyya Sufi order based in Ardabil. While his mother was the daughter of Uzun Hassan of the Aq Qoyunlu who ruled western Iran and daughter of a princess of Trebizond.
Shah Ismail thought he was the Mahdi and a reincarnation of Ali. With his followers thinking he was Divine.
Going as far as committing acts of Cannibalism to show devotion to Shah Ismail.
After his death, Tahmasp tried to move away from bizzare cult of the Qizilbash to more orthodox Shi'ite twelverism.
But the problem was that Iran didn't have any Twelver scholars, which had to be imported from Iraq and Lebanon. (It did have Zaydis in the Caspian region. But the Twelvers of Buyid Iran had vanished by this point)
Around this time, Iran was in something some historian's call "Sufic Shi'ism" or "Twelverisation of Sunnism". Which had emerged after the Mongol devastations when many Persian scholars fled to India, Egypt or Anatolia, and the 8th sultan of the ilkhanate, Oljaitu being an outright Shi'ite.
Subsequent rulers in Iran were a blend of Shi'ism and Sunnism, such as the Timurid princess repairing the Shrine of Ali Reza at Mashhad. Or Shia slogans appearing on Qara and Aq Qoyunlu coinage.
This is why the originally Sunni, Shafi'i Safaviyya order became Shia.
But the forced conversion of Iran took a long time. With Shah Ismail ii even trying to bring back Sunnism !
By the mid 1600s it was probably majority Shia. Though even in Nader Shah's time the Sunnis were still influential.

Yeah some time in the ottoman period the shareefs became officially sunnites, but the sunni establishment were very suspicious of the shareef families in makkah and madinah so much that they believed that they are still zaydis and supporters of zaydism who hide their identity because of political reasons. Thats why many historical books of that region talk about these suspicions. And if you think how can any sane person be a zaydi shia or how can it be that these people who are descendants of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa salam be Shia than i recommend you to read more about history books of the muslims and i recommend you to research on zaydism, in its essence it is like sunni islam with the difference that they while respecting the sahaba prefer the Ahl al Bayt, in religion and in politics.

They should be considered a 5th school of Islamic thought and law. The 4 other schools have no issue with their differences, and we should have no issue with them beyond jurisprudential disagreements.
