Because you are now into so many crafts, CraftingKaria makes sense. F-C AD are really good, although I tend to reach for my Caran d'Ache Supra Watercolors. Once again, thanks for sharing!

It's not Albrecht-Durer, but I bought a 72-color set of Derwent Watercolour pencils in a cherry wood finish wooden box for a really good price, and I'm pretty happy with them so far. I also have the full set of Albrecht-Durers in the normal metal tin, and they are definitely the best watercolor pencils I've tried by far.

If you use a 2H for pre sketching the graphite will not show afterwards

I don't know the coffee thing is, but congrats on updating your channel. You have shown some of your old crocheting things as well and won an award for your making yarn, so your name should reflect all your talents, including your art as well as the coloring. Stewie is really loving that bed! Purrrrrrrrrrrr.

I just wonder what is the point of water soluble pencils? I can’t seem to get on with them. To get all the variations with colour seems like a lot of work if you don’t buy the whole colour range, when you just need a small watercolour box and you can mix any colour you want at a much better cost than buying the whole range of colours in a box of pencils. Question is, what is the attraction with pencils? I have to say I like the idea of having them, but can’t get the quick results I like.

Watersoluble pencils do NOT replace watercolor paints. Watercolor paints are more packed with pigment (as is noted in the different prices for different colors for most artists brands).
The watercolor paints require more water and many artists have vast collection of brushes but water soluble pencils can be used effectively with just one water brush pen.
WC paints produce a clean flat wash with ease and texture can be harder to achieve. WS pencils are differ in that creating a textured look is much easier to achieve than a clean flat wash.
The finished look can be quite different. Whereas at least a basic understanding of color theory is required for effective watercolor paints, much less color theory is required for watersoluble pencils.
For me I use watercolor pencils much more than I do paints. I can and do create watersoluble pencil sketches in bed daily. I’m sure some people might do that with paints but it’s not as easy.
While watersoluble pencils sets can have over 100 pencils, in truth I usually use my sets of 36-48 pencils. Meanwhile artists like Miatagrrrl on Instagram do amazing work with just 3-6 pencils! Seriously, 99% of the time my sets of 36-48 are what I use, when I travel I use my wood box set of 48 Albrecht Dürer Watercolor pencils more than anything else. You are right that the pencils themselves take up more space particularly in a wood box set. But they require far less water and that’s great for working at ones nightstand or on a moving train!
Taken together watercolor pencils work best when used for closer to watercolors for large areas and closer to colored pencils for creating fine details.
Lastly I hope you will check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/9qP305B9CYo/v-deo.html

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply so fully. I did watch the suggested video which was very informative. I conclude that it depends on what style you want to work in. To me out sketching for an hour or two I’m going for quick and expressive with very quick access to a large and not always predictable colour range with lots of happy accidents and spontaneity, whereas when using pencils you are looking for a carefully detailed and controlled effect. Thanks again for your explanation.

Alison Conway yes! You are so right. “Happy accidents” are much less a thing with watercolor pencils. LOL.
