  • In this video I provide an introduction of watersoluble graphite. This medium is inexpensive, forgiving, lightfast and easy to get into. Water soluble graphite is exactly as the name implies. It is graphite that can be activated and moved with water. It can be erased just like regular graphite. It comes in pencils, sticks similar in size and shape as hard pastel sticks, putty like a clay, you can even purchase it in fine powder. Additionally there are tinted pencils tinted with a variety of colors.

This is something I've discovered this year. I bought the Faber Castell 8B ws pencil and its very versatile, depending on how hard you press to get the values. Very fun with just a single pencil. Thanks for demonstrating the Caran d’Ache ones. I like the blue one a lot!

I've recently gotten into this medium as well. They're probably sold out of past boxes now, but Sketchbox once had a box that was nothing but water-soluble graphite, and it included some Technalos and Derwent pencils.
Blick has a set of five Faber Castell water-soluble pencils and a brush for just under $10, and if you want it sooner, you can get the same set at Michael's for a few dollars more if you use a 50% coupon.
And finally, another option if you like sticks is the Lyra watercolor sticks, which are pretty large and come with paper sleeves.

I am so excited after watching this! I am 63, an artist (from birth I am told)... But never used watercolor... So it's is quite daunting for me to pick up a new media. I have an interest now, subscribed recently after finding your channel. Happenstance on this, it's a whole new world of art for me (watercolor and graphite...). I loved this demonstration, first time seeing these things! I think I'm hooked :) Btw I am also a cat addict, that last clip made me laugh!

Hello and welcome! Well I don’t want to be spammy but check out my playlists. I didn’t have access to art growing up. So I started with adult coloring books and then went to colored pencils, and then watercolor pencils and then watercolors. Somewhere along the line I found watersoluble graphite which I LOVE. I wasn’t even going to do a video on it because I thought everyone knew about it 😅(silly thing to think I know). But someone said they wanted a video and so I made this. So long story short if you have struggled or considered WC and watercolor pencils to be daunting you’ll find lots of easy to follow intros to those mediums, if slightly long winded 😅! Oh and for the last 3 years every video has ended with a clip of one of the cats. I forgot to include a clip once and let’s just say I was informed that folks want to see the cats! LOL 🤷🏾‍♀️🤣😂🤣

I love watersoluble graphite! I think those Caran d'Ache sticks are wonderful! I could not find that set so I bought them all open stock, sticks and pencils. I also love the Faber-Castell for the range of values and recently I also bought the Staedtler ones, they make a mini set called Staedtler Mars Lumograph aquarell in 4B, 6B and 8B, it comes with a number 8 brush. One can never have too many watersoluble graphites and brushes! :D Now I need to get that Faber-Castell waterbrush, it's too cute!
P.S. I will subscribe to your channel even if I already know that it's dangerous for bank accounts :D

Hello! Yes I have been meaning to try other brands like the Staedtler Mars. I heard they are super dark. I do link to the sets that I show in the description. The only place I know that has it is Jackson’s which ships world wide so that’s good.

I have a set of the Faber Castell pencils, but I found them a little hard and too light for shading. I use them for the under drawing for watercolor paintings now. I was using Daniel Smith graphite watercolor to shade with graphite, but I think I will now try the Caran d'Ache pencils based what you show. Thanks!

    • @ColoringKaria
      @ColoringKaria  4 роки тому

Thank you! Yes the Faber Castell ones are much lighter. But like you I find them perfect for under painting in watercolor and for sketches where I want the graphite lines to completely disappear. I think if I want to do a lot of shading and have more intensity I’ll use the Caran d’Ache or Derwent colors for the darker shades (I keep wanting to call them colors LOL). You are the graphite from Daniel Smith does seem really interesting! I’ll have to add that to my wishlist and see if I can get it at some point!

I love your comparisions and examples. I have a number of tools and find myself intimidated by inexperience. seems I've put the cart before the horse, have the tools but not the skills to use them, so your how-to's help me literally put pencil to paper with more ease in mixed media pieces and zentangle art. ty!! also, this year especially, i've fine-tuned (and forgiven) purchases that were what i could afford but didn't do what i needed because the quality didn't lend itself to the ideas i envisioned. have you seen the inktense travel palettes? i am learning more about watercolors vs ink, and how surfaces make such a difference in results.
so.... i use cheaper tools to practice with (horrors!! wasting inexperience on good tools...) but i've begun to feel and see the difference between brands, and how tools teach me what to do rather than trying to be 'perfect' or 'good enough' to use them. that being said, i love my crayola's color range, but they just don't do what i have gotten better at producing. thank goodness for 40% discount coupons and smaller a la carte options for try-before-you-buy-a-set. and i had to order a palette like yours, totally brilliant. i carry small clip boards everywhere for small drawings and have cut up mouse pads for cushioning micron nibs and 'cleaning' pens and brushes, but this one is perfect. may your end-of-year be safe and your new year productive.

Hello! Thank you so much for your kind words. I always say.you should use the tools that you’ll actual use. There is no point in buying fancy tools if you won’t feel comfortable using. But I’m always here to help.

This comment is going to be extremely off-topic, so let me start with something on-topic: can they be layered? Like, can I buy just one, like an 8b, and slowly layer up so I have light areas and dark areas?
    Now for the off-topic part:
as;ldgkhas;lgha;ldgkja;ldkgj it's a black artist? On UA-cam? As a half-black man adopted into a white family I'm so supremely excited to have found this video! And you have a wife? I love you. Please tell me you're still making videos! Please! You're like thefrugalcrafter, but more relatable because cats.

Thank you! And AWW THE KITTEH! I just know I am going to end up buying all the ArtGraf sets with the square pads of water soluble graphite some day. There's a greytones set, an earthtone set and a set with RBY and they're calling to me. Atm I am trying to learn watercolours, but there's just something about graphite that lures me in.
Edit: I think they're called ArtGraf Tailor Shape?

I just ordered the 12 set of Derwent Graphitints. They look so gouges. The only thing is my Husband has been wanting them as well. So I'm gonna have to share it with him. He will take them & put them with is stuff. So I will have to hunt them every time I want to use them, Also Have you ever tried the water brushes from Arteza? They are the best I've used so far. And A great price. TYFS
