Quick update; we have just gotten home from Greece. I'm pretty exhausted so I shall resume answering comments once I've had some sleep (which may take days due to the big time zone change).
Real time swatching----Ain't nobody got time for that hahaha! I defo prefer the speeded up version, these pencils and box are a delight for the eyes indeed! I was mesmerized watching your parrot come to life with every layer, magical!! Hope your holiday is going great!! Fab video! :D
I have the sixty set and Boy am I having fun sketching with these🥰🥰 They are just a delight Even more delightful when it’s FREE🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳. Congrats 🎉 Also Paul Rubens has watercolor pencils and they are very impressive. I did a side by side with the Caran D'ache watercolor pencils and was impressed
lucky duck!!!!, beautiful pencil set. Loved the parrot. You are not alone in not wanting to break in a new set of an art supply. I'm sure there are a lot of people including myself, who are just as hung up!!!!. Keep on swatchin'!!!!!.
Beautiful painting 😀👍 I feel the same way, the art supplies are so beautiful to look at when they are new and unused. And the longer I wait the harder it is to use them 🙈😂
I always love Faber Castel products. I have the full range of the Polychromos in the tin, had it for about 4 years now and am only just now needing a few replacement pencils. I also have a few of the Albrecht Durer range to compliment my Derwent watercolor pencils and they work really well together. Such patience you have to swatch them all! I wait for sales to get my art supplies, then they don't feel quite so precious to me as if I'd bought them regular price. That helps take some of the edge of the 'preciousness' off for me when it comes to being too afraid to use them. Most of my watercolor collection I've built up on whenever they're on sale too xD Looking forward to seeing your journey in watercolor pencils!
Buying things on sale is the best way to build a collection! I also do this...and of course this box was entirely on reward points so I was able to actually use them and break their perfection. 😂
I hardly know what day it is right now, lol! But I managed to sleep for about half the night after landing yesterday, so I'm not too bad at this very moment. I expect there will be at least one nap occurring later today, though I'll try to go back to my regular bedtime hours as soon as possible to hopefully get over it more quickly. Time will tell!
Great review. Thanks for making it - I know it takes a lot of work to swatch out such a huge set. I think you are gonna like the Museum Aquarelle from Caran d'Ache too. They are extremely vibrant and don't leave any pencil stribes at all.
Thank you! Yes, I spent a lot of time organising this swatch chart, haha! I have also done a video on the Museum Aquarelles, which came out after this one, maybe a month or two ago? Hopefully you can find that in my video catalogue if you are interested in seeing how I went with them! ❤
Becky, you are the Queen of color pencil sets. Your parrot is so beautiful..I love the colors you use for it. I have around 20ish Albrech Durer watercolor pencils "magnus" ones. That's too bad they are fading them! Anyhow beautiful box set!
The swatch sheets are so satisfying 😩💖 and tour parrot turned so cute and colorful 🥰 thankfully I prefer to aee art supplies well loved and used so I never get discouraged from using them even if they came in pretty sets and boxes 😅
The good thing about albrecht durer is that they have the same names/ numbers as their Polychromos cousins!! I’m sold! I’m going to get the set. I actually store my PC pencils in pencil rolls in order of the Polychromos chart. My numbers are then written on the loops in white fabric pens . It might sound a bit OCD but it saves me sooo much time in the long run and you see immediately which pencils get used up the fastest and when to stock up! Thankyou for your demonstration. 🤩
That's the best thing about Faber Castell products is that they have matching colour ranges and names. Your pencils sound very organised and that's a good thing!
While not a Polychromo fan, I do like these. I have a few of the Museum Aquarelle too and honestly like these just as well, especially given the price differentiation. I’m still not very skilled at using them. Thanks for sharing your technique. Parrot turned out great!
I really enjoyed your video. Your voice is always so cheerful, and excited by what you are creating. I have the tin box set of these pencils but I haven't even swatched them yet as they DO look so perfect just in the trays. This is my first comment but I always push the Thumbs Up button.
Thank you so much, I appreciate it! 😊 It's difficult to mar their perfection by swatching them. But painting them out with water and seeing their vibrant colours makes it all worth it! ❤️
Oh Becky that parrot turned out beautifully. We spent our flybuys on a dumb Bunnings voucher. I'm so mad now, I had no idea they had Albrecht Durers lol 🙃
Haha, I got lucky in that I just happened to type in pencils and they popped up. They were listed under Kids! Uh, no....😂 I keep looking out to see if they list more.
I have the polychromos version of this! It was a gift to myself which I purchased back in November….. and guess what….. I can’t bring myself to use it to break it’s perfection as you put it! 🫣 but you’ve inspired me to go for it now 😂 I’d love to see a head to head between these and the Caran D’Ache 🙏
I love your video. The painting of the parrot is gorgeous. I am a newbie to paints and colors but I have been drawing for many years. I can’t wait to get as good as you! I treated my self to the 120 sets of both the pencils and the watercolour pencils. They are gorgeous.
There are many videos on UA-cam that give beginners tips for watercolour pencils. But if you really want to apply them and make progress, it‘s difficult to find videos. You paint so beautifully with these pens. Could you teach us more so that we can make progress with this medium?
I appreciate the sped-up swatching, real-time swatching sort of drives me crazy 😂. That wooden box set is GORGEOUS! Too bad it takes up so much space, but worth it when you open it and see the two levels; love how it raises the top level so you can see both at the same time. Gorgeous parrot!! I really need to use my pencils more (watercolour and regular both!). Haha… I have several art supplies that haven’t been used yet because they’re just so gorgeous to look at while they’re new and perfect 😅. I sooo need to get over that (however, I’m still enjoying them, just in a different way lol).
It's ok to look at them for a while and admire their untouched beauty! I did that with these as well, haha. 😂❤ I couldn't imagine trying to do a voiceover for a real-time swatch. Talk for 40 solid minutes? I don't think so!
Ooh, that’s a lovely set and box. I realised after buying the prismacolors that I can’t do whole sets, I’ll never use all those earths, so I bought the half-set of these in the limited edition white box (these days I’d do hours of research to choose some individuals). They’re gorgeous pencils, though I still struggle with water control. They’re really soft to use as normal pencils though I’m always tempted to add water.
Yes I can totally agree with full sets having some colours that never get used! My Prismacolor set is the same, haha. Water control is super challenging with these sorts of pencils....I'm still trying to master that myself! ❤
Fair I have the 120 set of polychromos so didn’t feel the need to buy the 120 also cause I brought the Pitt artist brush pens 60 pack as the same I brought this so couldn’t justify paying more than 500 dollars yeah the 60 sets good.
Can't afford the set of 120, but I will be getting the set of 60. That'll do until I can afford the big set. I already have a small set of 12 and love them. Great pencils!!
i like how smooth they paint out to be. im still struggling internally to understand their use. like regular colour pencils, if you have to pull out paint at the end to get the lights back into it, you may aswell have just started the whole thing with paint.
Haha yes! But there is something so satisfying about activating them on paper...I guess there is so much I don't yet know about them, and a lot of potential to unlock. I'm just here for the pretty colours. 😁
Hi Becky, those look like a lot of fun! Nice watercolor pencils. Your parrot came out great! Are you back from your trip yet or are you on the tail end of it?
A great video Becky!! Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils have often been referred to as the "Royal Royce" of pencils, and these fabulous watercolour set is no exception!! I do need to buy the full set, hopefully they may be discounted as we have another Primeday coming up in October. The colour swatches look fantastic and it really is so useful when you're choosing colours for a painting and saves so much time. As great as the clours are, i have to say looking at your swatch sheet the greys are a big letdown, there has to be atleast 6 greys that they could have left out, they look pretty much the same and therefore seem pointless, more shades of brown would have been much better. I also love to use the brilliant Canson Moulin range, it's inexpensive and it's great quality...BUT UNFORTUNATELY i'ts been DISCONTINUED, there are quite a few online stores that still stock it but Canson thmbselves don't manufacture this brilliant paper anymore....GUTTED!!! That drama aside, youve done a fantastic job and your art is always a joy to see, wishing you good health and lots of best wishes for your channel and may you continue to inspire us aswell as yourself in all of your artist adventures .....Lots of Love & Best Wishes from the UK and also now your new subscriber, God Bless xx
It is certainly a beautiful set! The greys match the ones in the Polychromos set, ranging from light to dark in warm and cool versions. They make more sense in the non-soluble range, more than as Aquarelles. Yes, I was also gutted when Canson stopped manufacturing Moulin du Roy! At least Jackson's Art still has some available. I still have a huge stash to get through, lol. Welcome to my channel and thank you for your lovely comment! 😊
Oh wow, I couldn't believe this came up today as I just received my box of 60 in the post yesterday😊 Great timing! Upgraded from my Staedtler Karats which were pretty good, but very excited about these. I'm going to be envious of your extra 60 colours though I'm sure. Cant wait to watch & swatch along!!!!
Oh nice! I had the 60 set first as well, and then ended up buying a few extras on top...and now I have those AND this giant set so my collection is a bit ridiculous now, lol! A lot of spares...😬 But overall, the 60 set is very good too. 💜
@@BeckyTregear aren't they irresistible, I'm in luurve 🥰 Don't think I'll be able to resist topping up the 60 with a few more either🙃 Your parrot turned out wonderfully btw.
thanks for your time to do the video! to answer the question regarding real time swatching: with 120 colors i personally prefer if the footage is sped up. if it was fewer colors, lets say around 20ish, then real time and talking about every color individually is enjoyable for me, but with 120 colors it would take so long that i wouldnt watch everything, i would just zap through the video and maybe listen to the details for color ranges im interested in (usually yellows and blues), so i definitely like how you did it in this video =) edit: regarding salmon, coral and beige red: as far as i remember, they always used these as the german names (Lachs, Koralle, Beigerot) and i was really confused why in english it was light medium and dark flesh instead of just literal translations. so its nice to see they changed it! =)
I am too impatient to do real time swatching anyway, because the voiceover would take forever, lol! I'm glad the English versions are using the proper names now.
Lovely video. I have these pencils too I didn’t realise that flybys have stock this brand of pencils I’ll have to check flybys out in my phone and see what other art stuff they have.. we are lucky hear in Australia I think.. I’m up in Townsville north tropical Queensland
I looked a few days ago and only a small set seems to be on their website at the moment. 😭 But it's worth checking every now and then in case they list them again, or something else. My hope is that they will sell the matching Polychromos box at some point, lol.
Caran D'ache have two professional lines from what I understand, Supracolour and then the museum aquarelle, same for the non watercolour pencils in the Pablo and Luminance, I think the FC are the equivalent of the former CD one's.
Yes they do, and I still need to review the Museum Aquarelles! Then I can compare them with the Supracolors, and also with these FC ones. They're all pretty much on a par with each other from memory, but a showdown is required, haha!
You did well with your Flybuys. I got my first Polychromos that way. It was the 36 set, but it was enough to know I wanted more. I wish they had more Faber-Castell products as its nice to actually get something you already want. Are they the same colours as Polys? The colours look the same and I have heard they changed the flesh names to new things. I did consider getting the 36 of these, but I think since I don't use my Inktense enough, which I love, i don't need actual watercolor pencils. I will likely get the other Inktense colours and I plan on working more with those soon again. I agree that the metallic aren't really necessary. I would rather 3 other pencils. I was so nervous starting my Poly 120's. They looked so perfect and I didn't want to ruin that. But 6 months in and I love their imperfections and that they are getting shorter. I feel proud that I have actually used them and the fact that I can replace any pencil for only a few dollars has made it much easier.
They're so much easier to use when they're at different lengths! 😂 Faber Castell has the same names across their entire professional line I think, including the pens. Makes life easier! The flesh tones have had an update on their names.
Hope you see this message. Is so difficult for me to see the actual colors on my phone. I'm trying to see if any of those reds look orangy when diluted. Orangy not pinkish. I bought several reds but when they are diluted they look pinkish. 😢 Could you help me with this, please?
You'll want to go with Deep Red, Deep Scarlet Red, Pale Geranium Lake, Light Cadmium Red and Scarlet Red as ones which lean towards the orange side of things.
Wow! thank you so much! and your artwork turned out so stunning! Would love to know- which do you prefer... these or the museum aquarelle? Trying to decide... asap- everyone has different opinions and its so wonderful to hear everyones thoughts Really absolutely stunning!
It's a hard choice; they're both great! I still have yet to do a comparison video...this year has been a struggle to get things done, and I hope to be back on track soon!
@@BeckyTregearthank you so much! And I’m so sorry to hear it has been so difficult for you 💙 really hope thing’s improving 💕 I tried a few of the museums- they don’t feel quite as creamy laying down on the paper( when just used as normal pencil). Do you notice that? Thank you so much again!
@@BeckyTregear wow! Looking forward to seeing it! Thank you so much! I am worried that the ones I have may be odd or something- any idea if the museums aren’t as nice(?) laying down or not as creamy or something ? So incredibly sorry to ask!! Looking forward to seeing your comparison!
@@PaigeEscapes I just swatched them and they went down very well - creamy and highly pigmented. One in the bunch is dodgy, violet, because I had wet it directly with a brush ages ago and it has made the lead dry out big time, so I won't be doing that again!
I've been using a Dahle 133 hand crank sharpener for all of my coloured pencils and it has been working really well! My upcoming video this weekend will feature it, and it can be found on Amazon. 😊
Hello! Thanks for the video! Could you advise me on the best way to sharpen pencils? I've been trying to use a Faber-Castell sharpener, but it creates such a short pencil tip.
I recently bought a Dahl 11.5mm hand crank pencil sharpener off Amazon, and that thing has been amazing! It sharpens pencils to a nice long point and has little rubber grips so it doesn't bite into the wood, like a lot of other crank sharpeners do. It's well worth checking out!
I use a Dahle 133 hand crank sharpener, which I found on Amazon. It's so great as it has rubber grips so it doesn't ruin pencil barrels, and it sharpens all pencils like a dream, even more difficult ones like Prismacolors without breaking them all the time. It's great for the Albrechts too!
I use a Dahle 133 hand crank sharpener which works well with all of my coloured pencils, including these ones. It's great because the grips are rubber and not metal, so they don't chomp into the barrel of the pencils and ruin them. Highly recommended - I found mine on Amazon.
When it was on Flybuys, it was 78,000 points I think. To buy, anywhere from AUD $350 - 500 shopping around online and in-store. The Art Shop currently has it for $409.
In response to if I have a hard time using a new set. Yes it is hard to disrupt the perfection. One way to accomplish that is don’t do art, instead watch other artists do art on utube. 😂 Guaranteed to keep your pencils new
I am reviewing water color pencils .....I have the polychomos i need a good set of water color .for coloring books nothing cool like real Art hahahahahah thanks for this video
Just for anyone wondering, buying that box at retail price is more than twice (2, two, TWICE) as expensive as buying every one of those pencils separately. They're about £230 at 1.90 per pencil where I live. So if you don't want to spend an extra 360 (three hundred and sixty!!!) pounds on a wood box then just buy the damn pencils. Please. Your bank account will come by at night and murder you if you do this. Hell, if you absolutely NEED a box buy the metal tin version, that's only £70 more expensive than buying the pencils.
Woah, that's a HUGE difference! 😱 I did some calculations at my local Aussie store, and the tin set is actually slightly cheaper than buying them all individually, but of course the wooden box is more expensive - the wood itself costs quite a lot to make I'd imagine. It's always worth shopping for sales and deals which then may make the box actually worth it, lol.

@@BeckyTregear aren't they irresistible, I'm in luurve 🥰 Don't think I'll be able to resist topping up the 60 with a few more either🙃 Your parrot turned out wonderfully btw.
thanks for your time to do the video! to answer the question regarding real time swatching: with 120 colors i personally prefer if the footage is sped up. if it was fewer colors, lets say around 20ish, then real time and talking about every color individually is enjoyable for me, but with 120 colors it would take so long that i wouldnt watch everything, i would just zap through the video and maybe listen to the details for color ranges im interested in (usually yellows and blues), so i definitely like how you did it in this video =)
edit: regarding salmon, coral and beige red: as far as i remember, they always used these as the german names (Lachs, Koralle, Beigerot) and i was really confused why in english it was light medium and dark flesh instead of just literal translations. so its nice to see they changed it!
@@BeckyTregear I sold a spleen to buy some Pablo's, not used em yet, they're very thin though.
great video!
Thank you 😊
You did well with your Flybuys.
Your correct Becky, I only read that on their sites today
You always make me laugh"Devestating, the pencils are no longer the same higths as each other".😊 I feel your pain.
I'm not overly dramatic or anything! 😂
Awesome, to see you have Faber Castell 120 wooden box. Thanks for sharing this video. What types of tapes are you using for sticking paper??
I tend to use washi tapes but any tape that is labeled as low-tack will do the job. High tack is too sticky.
Thank you for the ideas using the gold, silver and copper; I never know what to do with those ones! ❤
Hope you see this message.
Is so difficult for me to see the actual colors on my phone. I'm trying to see if any of those reds look orangy when diluted. Orangy not pinkish. I bought several reds but when they are diluted they look pinkish. 😢
Could you help me with this, please?
You'll want to go with Deep Red, Deep Scarlet Red, Pale Geranium Lake, Light Cadmium Red and Scarlet Red as ones which lean towards the orange side of things.
Wow! thank you so much! and your artwork turned out so stunning!
Would love to know- which do you prefer... these or the museum aquarelle? Trying to decide... asap- everyone has different opinions and its so wonderful to hear everyones thoughts
Really absolutely stunning!
It's a hard choice; they're both great! I still have yet to do a comparison video...this year has been a struggle to get things done, and I hope to be back on track soon!
@@BeckyTregearthank you so much! And I’m so sorry to hear it has been so difficult for you 💙 really hope thing’s improving 💕
I tried a few of the museums- they don’t feel quite as creamy laying down on the paper( when just used as normal pencil). Do you notice that?
Thank you so much again!
@@PaigeEscapes I've decided to pull the set out and film a video, hopefully coming out in October, lol. I need to answers to these questions! 😂
Love your watercolor pencil videos but can you tell me what pencil sharpener you used for your Faber-Castell watercolor colour pencils
I've been using a Dahle 133 hand crank sharpener for all of my coloured pencils and it has been working really well! My upcoming video this weekend will feature it, and it can be found on Amazon. 😊
Thank you for your reply. I will order one of them. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming video. X
@@BeckyTregear thanks a lot! ❤
May I know what sharpener you use for this pencils? I just bought the 120 set, now trying to find a suitable pencil sharpener.
I just got a small set of these. What pencil sharpener works good with them? I prefer handheld and not electric ones so I can sharpen them slowly.
I use a Dahle 133 hand crank sharpener which works well with all of my coloured pencils, including these ones. It's great because the grips are rubber and not metal, so they don't chomp into the barrel of the pencils and ruin them. Highly recommended - I found mine on Amazon.
@@BeckyTregear thanks for the recommendation
I think they do well as a base layer with polychromos on top
Yes, I've used them like that before too - they work well together. 😊
Wh needs so many colors, use a base & blend, yes?
@@ralphanderson2603 I need all the colours! 🤣
I have a question, how much is it?
When it was on Flybuys, it was 78,000 points I think. To buy, anywhere from AUD $350 - 500 shopping around online and in-store. The Art Shop currently has it for $409.

In response to if I have a hard time using a new set. Yes it is hard to disrupt the perfection.
One way to accomplish that is don’t do art, instead watch other artists do art on utube. 😂
Guaranteed to keep your pencils new
Hahaha that's a great tip! 😂
My teacher wished these pencils for botanical art and we never used water...pity
I am reviewing water color pencils .....I have the polychomos i need a good set of water color .for coloring books nothing cool like real Art hahahahahah thanks for this video
Albrechts are some of the best I've ever tried. 😄
@@BeckyTregear year I love your Picture hon xxxx i will get a set later on this year or next year hahahha
AMAZING!!!!
Thank you! ❤
I want to buy but I don’t want to use it 🥹
Haha I can totally relate to that; it took me quite a while to use these and mar their perfection. 😆
