I use these too! I did my own lightfast test with them last year, together with the Polychromos. And the result for the Albrecht Duerers was... DISAPPOINTING! 😕 The good news first: I tested the ADs both dry and wet, next to each other, and the dry swatch faded the same as the water-activated swatch, there was no difference (only when the pigment is very very washed out does it fade slightly faster, but not much). The bad news: 3 stars in the ADs don't mean the same as 3 stars in the Polychromos! The AD stars seem to be "worth" less than the Polychromos stars, meaning they fade more and faster. Not cool. I also have the Albrecht Duerer Magnus, which are not manufactured anymore, unfortunately. And they were much more lightfast than the ADs! It's a shame they discontinued them.

I swatched them dry and wet, covered half of each swatch, and hung them in a south facing window so they would get full sun for a few months. I didn't test every color, just a few where the lightfast ratings on the product differed from the results that the Colored Pencil Society of America got. There were a couple that were rated 3 stars that actually faded pretty quickly. I forgot about that, because it was a couple of years ago and I don't use those few pencils.
@@Art_by_Nicole I did it in a similar way as Shana describes here, except that I didn't cover half the swatch, instead I cut off half of the swatches and kept them in a drawer, then pulled them out and held them next to their counter part every time I checked. I left the swatches in the south facing window for several months, but I checked them every 2-3 weeks to see how they developed.
My favorite paper to use with watercolor/water-soluble pencils is mixed media paper! I use Museum Aquarelle, Albrecht Durer, Inktense, Neocolor 2, and Graphitint. Specifically, I enjoy the Strathmore 500 Series 90lb Mixed Media paper that comes in their hard-bound and softcover journals, as well as their wire-bound Visual Journals. I use these sketchbooks as my every day, everywhere sketchbooks. It also comes in sheets and rolls. The surface is vellum, smooth but not too textured (less textured than cold press but a little more than hot press). The paper is not too thick (so I don't feel too precious about sketching and playing) nor too thin to experiment on; it's a lovely warm white, and it’s 100% cotton at a fairly reasonable price point. It takes a beating with lots of water, lifting, layering, and some scrubbing, too! When I found this paper, I couldn’t return to cellulose mixed media! 😂 There’s a Heavyweight 500 Series 350lb Mixed Media Paper and a Mixed Media Board available, but I haven’t tried those yet. I love your drawing. I like these A. Dürer pencils very much and sometimes I combine them with Polychromos too. As for the paper, I find Canson Mix Media quite good and cheap, but my favorite is Arches 300 g hot pressed cotton.
Just nabbed myself the full sets of AD's a few days back. I had a smaller set beforehand and was using that. I love the AD's, they're great to use in the hand and the colors are so vibrant. My smaller set, I will now use when I go out and do stuff whilst I'm wandering about, since it's the basic set of 12 pencils. Just the right size to be portable!!😊😊

I use cold press archer and Caran d'ache watercolorpencils. Works great for me... I have a few Faber Castels bought in open stock but prefer Caran d'ache... ❤
I have had my eye on the Caran d'ache for quite some time, and finally just bought a set recently! I am working on a piece with them now and will have a video out about them soon!
I really love the Albrecht Dürer pencils and have been using them for years. For design work I work on cardstock or cartridge paper with little water, but in those cases I need a light touch of colour only and don’t aim for saturation. When I use them in adult colouring books they are very vibrant after one or two water activated layers and a dry layer on top. I love that I can choose how much saturation I want, opposed to the Inktense (that I also love!) which are never subtle 😅 I assume it’s the paper that makes a big difference, but also the choice of colour as some pencils give a more vibrant result than others.
Yeah, I think the paper was the main issue here. But there were definitely colors that were more saturated than others, as with any art supply. It is nice when you are looking for subtlety. I think a part of it is that I am so used to Inktense where I don't have to fight as hard to build up the saturation I want. Lol
@CautionArtistatPlay I think it is always the paper that is the issue. Cheap watercolorpaper. And expensive pecils gives way more bad results than good wayercolorpaper and cheaper pencils. Especially with watercolor paint. I van use cheap watercolor paint on expensive watercolorpaper with good results. But even my schmincke watercolorpaint and for watercolorpaint struggles with cheap watercolorpaper. For me it is all in the paper. If I have to give advice to a beginning watercolorartist I say use good paper and chose student grade watercolorpaint. Of you like it upgrade your watercolorpaint as the pans get empty. And buy the more expensive artistgrade. A lot of people start with bot inexpensive materials and find watercolor not for them as they don't get the results they want. Or they see that a tutorial gives bad results... when they use once a good paper their eyes go open. And if I let them dig in my paint they find it so amusing... it is a pity a lot of students with talent quit because they are disappointed in the result. I warm them up again by using once my materials... 😂 even for kids it is important they use good materials when you see they are talented. Like my granddaughter fe. I have her some good sketchbooks and a few schmincke watercolors and when she is with me she can use my stuff. And now she is exploring all kind of media and he is hooked on watercolor. She tales good care of the materials because she understands it's expensive. But what is more beautiful than a child (she turns 10) that has a twinkle in her eyes and is concentrated on making a. Piece... ❤ It's not because she is my granddaughter but I love watching those young kids who are talented exploring and enjoying an art media.. . Sorry for the rambling. @annnoyez I wholeheartedly agree with you about the paper! Paper makes all the difference, not just with watercolor, but also colored pencil and other media as well. I have never really had an issue with the paper I was using, at least not to this extent, so that's why i was surprised! Sometimes, certain supplies just don't go well with certain paper. I will be trying them on my Arches paper next. I also love seeing young artists explore art supplies and seeing their face light up when they have found something they love! Huge fan of you, your art, your channel!!! I have had really great success with Strathmore 500 series, hot press paper, in ready cut sheets. I also love the texture of their 500 series cold press because it's smoother than others, but still just enough texture to make it fun lol...I personally prefer this to any other cotton paper I've tried, including Arches! Also, I haven't tried museum aquarelle (which I'm sure are awesome), but in addition to the 120 A.D. pencils, the mondeluz line by Kohinoor offers a really powerful punch of additional colors (with some dupes)... But these colors don't totally disappear when you water them down, like Derwent watercolor pencils do. I get a lot of enjoyment watching your pieces come together from that first mark you make on the page.. It's been very helpful seeing all the positives and even what you find to be any negatives of specific products .... unfortunately, there is no art supply store near me, so I can't test things out in that way. You're honest opinions are something I've come to rely on... And you've never steered me wrong!! Thanks for putting so much amazing energy into all you are doing here and sharing with us! Oh hecky darn- I have these water color pencils too. And I also have hot and cold press Arches paper I bought 2 years ago! I haven’t used it all yet cuz I got side tracked by numerous sketch books 😂. I also love Lindsay and saw that video. Love your videos too.
I use these pencils on both Arches and Saunders Waterford! You have enough texture that you can do a couple layers before having to dissolve the pencil, you also don't get the lifting as easily.
I loved your video! I have the full set of albrecht durers and a 36 polychromos set. I Love using them together too. I use baohong academy hot pressed wcpaper, and the colors are super vibrant! I never wanted to use solvents with color pencils, so, i am trying to use them more as color pencils with water instead... still i am getting used to them. But i love them. But try cold pressed, they seem to work great as well. Lovelly video and painting.
Here is some information from the Derwent website FAQ's Q: "Is Derwent Inktense classed as an ink or watercolour product?" A: "It is classed as a watercolour product but it has different properties to a regular watercolour pencil, making it look like an ink." So, it's a watercolor product that looks like an ink, according to Derwent. They are different for sure, but both brands fall into the category of water-soluble colored pencils. Also, regular watercolors are more vibrant than the Albrecht Durer too, so either way, the Albrecht Durer were not coming out as saturated as I had hoped they would. www.derwentart.us/about/product-faqs/derwent-inktense-faqs/
I've seen Lindsay talk about sizing a few times and it blows my mind that paper can stop working. So you didn't have issues with Inktense? I only have old watercolour paper and want to learn how to draw properly with Inktense and do more than what I've done with them previously (simple things only and Disney colouring pages) and don't plan on buying new paper. I wonder about certain climates and if it makes a difference to the paper or if we are all screwed with our old paper.
I was mind blown when I heard her talk about it as well! I haven't noticed any issues with this paper and Inktense, but come to think if it, it's been a bit since I used Inktense on this block. I think my last Inktense piece was done on the cold press from the same company (with no issues), and the one before that was done on Arches Hot Press. However, my recent Graphitint piece was done on this paper, and I didn't have any issues with that, not that I recall anyway. There's a chance that climate can play a role, I live in the same state as Lindsay, so she and I will probably run into similar issues if that is the case. Either way, it's a bummer, especially if you like to stock up on your favorite paper!

Haha! Yeah, I'm really picky about white pencils! I have to say, I think I definitely like Inktense better than regular watercolor pencils. They are more my speed as far as saturation and layering goes. So, I am still trying to get used to using regular watercolor pencils. But when I feel more comfortable, I will have to try and do a step by step tutorial! Thanks for the suggestion!
@@CautionArtistatPlay maybe that’s the problem; we’ve gotten used to Inktense. Maybe we are a bit spoiled 🤫😂 I once tried watercolour pencils (Bruynzeel) but I felt a bit like a ten-year old doing craft 🫣 And I so get what you mean with the white pencils. On your recommendation I use the Chinese white. Recently I’ve heard that the Staedler permanent white pencil is even better. I instantly thought ‘I have to tell Shana this’ 😂 Haven’t tried it yet but apparently you can draw or write with it on glass. On glass with a pencil😱
@@CautionArtistatPlay oh and the white from Faber castell can be a good use if I want to lighten the colour a bit. I tried the Chinese white on red to make pink, but the white was too opaque. 🧐🤣

Sometimes I think the FaberCastell Albrecht Durer pencils and Markers look Brighter on Wood Pulp, I think it’s because they don’t sink into the Paper as much?…. Same goes for my cheaper brands.
Another thought on lightfastness: I'm on a German art forum where a nice person from Faber Castell is posting and we're able to ask questions. I asked last year about the lightfast testing and he said they test them dry, not activated with water. But like I said in my other comment, I didn't find any difference between the dry swatch and the water-activated swatch when I did my own lightfast test. So the difference in the stars, and difference in the results, even when the stars are the same as the Polychromos, must be due to the binder they use...

Derwent Inktense is not watercolor. You can’t really compare it to the faber castell pencils. Inktense is ink. Faber castell is watercolor.

So, it's a watercolor product that looks like an ink, according to Derwent. They are different for sure, but both brands fall into the category of water-soluble colored pencils. Also, regular watercolors are more vibrant than the Albrecht Durer too, so either way, the Albrecht Durer were not coming out as saturated as I had hoped they would.

I've seen Lindsay talk about sizing a few times and it blows my mind that paper can stop working. So you didn't have issues with Inktense? I only have old watercolour paper and want to learn how to draw properly with Inktense and do more than what I've done with them previously (simple things only and Disney colouring pages) and don't plan on buying new paper.
I wonder about certain climates and if it makes a difference to the paper or if we are all screwed with our old paper.
I was mind blown when I heard her talk about it as well! I haven't noticed any issues with this paper and Inktense, but come to think if it, it's been a bit since I used Inktense on this block. I think my last Inktense piece was done on the cold press from the same company (with no issues), and the one before that was done on Arches Hot Press. However, my recent Graphitint piece was done on this paper, and I didn't have any issues with that, not that I recall anyway.
There's a chance that climate can play a role, I live in the same state as Lindsay, so she and I will probably run into similar issues if that is the case. Either way, it's a bummer, especially if you like to stock up on your favorite paper!

I have watched videos about watercolour pencils, but..I don’t know…I don’t particularly like them. To me it looks ‘messy’. Maybe I like colours to be more bright? Don’t know exactly how to describe it.
And…when I saw you using the white I was just thinking ‘oh nooo, that white is so crappy!’ And you said at the same moment 😂
Haha! Yeah, I'm really picky about white pencils! I have to say, I think I definitely like Inktense better than regular watercolor pencils. They are more my speed as far as saturation and layering goes. So, I am still trying to get used to using regular watercolor pencils. But when I feel more comfortable, I will have to try and do a step by step tutorial! Thanks for the suggestion!

I once tried watercolour pencils (Bruynzeel) but I felt a bit like a ten-year old doing craft 🫣
And I so get what you mean with the white pencils. On your recommendation I use the Chinese white. Recently I’ve heard that the Staedler permanent white pencil is even better. I instantly thought ‘I have to tell Shana this’ 😂 Haven’t tried it yet but apparently you can draw or write with it on glass. On glass with a pencil😱
@@CautionArtistatPlay oh and the white from Faber castell can be a good use if I want to lighten the colour a bit. I tried the Chinese white on red to make pink, but the white was too opaque. 🧐🤣

@Art_by_Nicole you may be right! It's hard to compete with Inktense! Ooh, now I have another white I need to try! Lol. The soft white by Holbein is a show stopper too!
Sometimes I think the FaberCastell Albrecht Durer pencils and Markers look Brighter on Wood Pulp, I think it’s because they don’t sink into the Paper as much?…. Same goes for my cheaper brands.

Another thought on lightfastness: I'm on a German art forum where a nice person from Faber Castell is posting and we're able to ask questions. I asked last year about the lightfast testing and he said they test them dry, not activated with water. But like I said in my other comment, I didn't find any difference between the dry swatch and the water-activated swatch when I did my own lightfast test. So the difference in the stars, and difference in the results, even when the stars are the same as the Polychromos, must be due to the binder they use...
