I love how they argue so naturally and fluidly. You can tell that not a thing that always happens but a freak accident. And that they are friends but friends argue under stress and panic. I also like how the “lazy” guy is seen as uncaring and unprofessional by the more professional friend even when it’s clear he’s just experienced. As proved as the leader making him her partner in their routine and immediately trusting his word when she asked here Sasha was. He knows what close calls look like so he doesn’t worry as much but he does start worrying when they make there way to the stage and are on it.

I love the blurring of fantasy and reality. The way the women all move in a line at 0:14. The creature that slithers past at 0:16, where you can only just glimpse the humans inside. The crowd of people in the full-head masks at 0:20, who look like aliens or spirits but sound like normal people. I think it helps sell the importance of the event, that there's almost a hint of magic in the air even as the characters are focused on the down-to-earth, immediate problem of their missing member.
wow!!! this is fantastic! the amount of character, life, intrigue, tension and whimsical beauty breathed into everything about the pacing, dialogue, design, style, animation, movement... creates such a human, and yet such a magical experience!
I'm in love with how particular and well written everyone of these characters is, even if we saw them for less then 5 minutes their personalities are so strong, evident, and different from each other that you feel like you know them well. I would love to see a "sequel"
Anyone else notice the each pair is the opposite of on another? The calm girl is paired with the angry diva. The strict leader is paired with the laid back guy. So if Sasha is supposed to be paired with the nervous boy, perhaps Sasha is more..... adventurous? 🤷
I bet Sasha is the super cool one who's charismatic, friendly and cool and has a way of putting everyone else at ease when he's around and the light of the party.
I JUST NOTICED EACH ONE OF THEM REPRESENTED THE WINGS OF THE BIRD THAT WAS ON THE BACKGROUND OF THE STAGE AND THAT'S WHY IT WAS SO IMPORTANT TO HAVE ALL OF THEM AT THE SAME TIME HOLY SHIT!!!
What an interesting idea for animation, usually we as audience only see the performance and only the performance, but here we see and feel the nervous energy and coming together of different personalities that are needed in the backstage for the performance to happen. They are so very different people, but on stage they have harmony. And of course it ends when Sasha is found, since finding him was the biggest topic of discussion. Beautiful animation with a lot of interesting details, my favourite is the poor make-up pen that rolled off the table! 😃
Yes very interesting! And I think that here the directors are showing their "performance" which explains how it was actually during the creation of the movie, with many different personnalities colliding. Sasha arriving would be like finishing the movie in time or smthg. Very meta :)
I rewatched for that poor pen & I think my favorite detail was Glasses guy wearing his street clothes right up until they got to the stage 😂 it was just so quick & in character i never noticed the first time 😹
Man, reading your comment reminded me of when I used to do ballet as a kid. Though it's not my passion (maybe never was) or even a hobby sadly, I miss doing the performances. I do recall that it was chaotic backstage sometimes since besides the normal stuff, us kids would get bored waiting so we did our best to keep ourselves entertained like trying to quietly play duck, duck, goose while backstage. That was pretty fun but if we weren't quiet, we would get scolded. LOL The costumes and dances were fun, even the makeup was sometimes despite the fact that I've always had hair that refuses to stay neat while pulled back in a bun or even a ponytail. My mom had to use a ton of hairspray, Bobby pins, and even little hair nets to keep my hair up and neat for a performance. I think my favorite and one of my last performances I did has to be as a Spanish dancer in the Nutcracker, a role whose name I bet I'm getting wrong. LOL But my class and I wore long flowing skirts and we even made up parts of our dance routine ourselves. That was super fun and it turned out really well! I wish though that I could perform again once in awhile, maybe as a singer though since I do enjoy singing. I have lots of good memories though, ones I'm thankful to have. Also I admit performers are pretty amazing, cause over time I've come to learn that preparing and making a show is hard work, making basically any event is hard. So bravo!! I bow to you all with respect!
I feel like I'm watching a movie from an alternate universe, the costume design really gives this feel of being in a culture extremely similar yet fundamentally different from earth, and that's something very few pieces of media can do well. Great Job!
I think cosmopolitan is the word you're looking for; It's using a Western European carnivalesque as a base with all the flaps and flared sleeves as well as the French girl's acrobat leggings, however the maces and collars also hint at AngloAmerican marching band traditions, meanwhile the headdresses and straps feel extremely Slavic to me and the use of beads and facepaint seem like a blend of Slavic and Hindu cultures. The multi-winged bird might have some Eastasian influence as well though I can't quite place it and the Solar motif obviously draws from the Latin American Sun of May, maybe drifting towards the European Sun in Splendour or some other solar traditions across the world at some points.
The pacing and tone of the story was incredible. Not to mention the characters, each of their personalities was so distinct especially Sacha. I'd say he shined the brightest of them all despite the audience never even having met him. It's clear how everyone, even the leader of the show, depends on his presence during the performance and that makes the hook ending all the more satisfying(/potentially stressful depending on how you choose to interpret it...who else could potentially dashing onto the stage?). The art only adds to the story. The colors in particular work very strong in relation to the more simplistic lineart. I'm so glad to have seen this in my recommendations!! :-]
@@legendaryunicorn409 a good place to interpret it is when they were scrolling thru their posted pics, you can feel his energy despite him not being fully shown. Like in the blurred pic and him running behind the nervous guy showing he's energetic and moves around a lot. He's also in every pic they showed, looks like he's involve in a lot of the happenings.
@@legendaryunicorn409 hes the crux of the plot even though we we dont know how he looks like. kinda like an unknown force idk i think people are drawn to the mystery of his character.
@@legendaryunicorn409Well most of the people above gave a coherent evidence of sacha being the light and brightness in the group, we can also point out from the poster shown at 3:07 till 3:10 that among the group 3 people have eyes closed ( not looking at crowd ) and 2 people facing opposite to each other and again not at crowd ( giving a side face to crowd) the one and only person looking at crowd directly is Sacha which denotes his confidence in facing the crowd and secondly ( most important part ) his face is covered by the mask of Sun - denoting the brightness and bold personality of sasha which outshines the most in the group and that too without even showing face.
I'll remain optimistic, because they all smiled and wore a more calm look when they saw this guy running onto the stage. I think it was definitely Sacha
I cannot express how much i adore this animation, its characters, its environments, and its subtle, yet whimsical worldbuilding. I come back to watch this animation from time to time because of how well done every aspect of it is and because it inspires me as an artist! Star glasses was nice to see. Things stress me out so bad that I shut down and it looks like I’m relaxed. Not practicing, getting ready at the last possible second, lying in favor of a positive outcome lol. A few of the things that makes it feel like I have some kind of control. I’m sure he’s just naturally really chill but the way he handles the situation reminded me of myself. The show goes on/ you’ll survive, might as well just relax. There needs to be at least one capable but relaxed person in any situation
I like how it’s the opposite of a “I’m late!” story where it’s the remaining cast wondering where the person is and not solely/shared with the person who’s late. Also with Sasha being compared to the sun, I think it’s clever, but I don’t think he’s the sun always, just in this scenario it’s more of symbolism than a literal representation. Overall an amazing short!
I feel like the point of this wasn’t necessarily Sasha himself, but everyone’s reactions to him being gone. Most people down here are saying similar things, but truly, the characterization in this is amazing :D
has anyone yet mentioned the cool mishmash of aesthetics from different cultures? the first time i watched i couldn't put my finger on where this was yet the setting feels so convincing, then i realized its a huge hybrid! really fascinating choice, and the result is gorgeous
ikr! it's beautiful, it almost feels like a distant future, all cultures are mixed together in beautiful colorful combination-- watching this kinda made me want something like that, different cultures separated into different acts but ultimately united in the same event and no I don't say this as someone who hasn't experienced/been part of something, I've learned dances and performed in school in my homeland, honestly something like that could bring a wonderful sense of unity-- just other people learning and teaching about their own different yet similar customs, I would love being a part of that some people might prefer keeping their customs to themselves and honestly that's fair aswell, there could be more exclusive events/areas for the same event if a large portion of people involved would like to keep the event small for safety or cultural reasons
3:41 The way Ida looks at Jun when he just shows up changed, the insult in her face. and later when Sacha turns up she just stares at him with murderous intent.
These characters were amazing! The chemistry was perfect. Even though they knew it was impossible for them to perform without him, they were brave enough to have faith he'd show up, glad he really does exist lol
4:21 i thought everyone was gonna be still as the light shone on them - it’s dark and we’re far away from them. But if you keep looking, the nervous one looks up, the chill one does 👌🏾, and the leader knocks him back into position. Cool detail
I love how you can hear the two acts before them play (and the applause) throughout this short. Staggering attention to detail. It's like the background music isn't even background music. The drums add suspense, even the sound effects are part of the song. It's amazing.
The bit where Jun's chair hits the ground right after the "you think he's not coming?" This short is chock full of tiny moments like that, you'd never think to add something like that in, but it makes this feel so much more real and believable. I love it
4:18 idk what that guy is so nervous about! the way he spun the stick (? forgot what it was called) so flawlessly, the animators did so well on the whole animation honestly!
"Are we sure this guy even exists?" - best visual joke EVER! Judging by Prim's and Ida's faces at the very end if Sasha wasn't dead he will be as soon as the curtain falls after the performance lol. This is such a fabulous work I'm speechless! I've already rewatched it thrice and am not gonna stop at that. Thank you so much for creating such a masterpiece!
THIS NEEDS TO BE PICKED UP BY A NETWORK OR ANY PLATFORM! I need a full show or a movie with this. Such amazing characters, the setting, we're already intrigued by Sasha and rest of the team Crazy good work!
This is a very interesting concept. The idea of Sacha being the Sun is possible, but a little predictable- it'd be prettyyy heavy handed to paste the literal sun over his face in so many places. Though he does only appear once the curtains open (metaphorical parting of the clouds?). The idea that Sacha is the Moon makes more sense to me since he can only reflect the light of the Sun, perhaps the energy of the crowd, and he only appears once the light is on them. I saw a few people say this can't be the case since he appears in daylight, but it's important to remember that on a clear Summer day like the solstice, you can still see the moon pretty clearly. But rather than the more heavy-handed metaphors, what if Sacha is a Star? He imitates the sun, giving off his own light, but the harder you try to look at him the harder he is to see. On stage, he's one of many stars, his fellow performers. Their doubts and worries flicker in his absence, but even with one gone they still have to go out. I think this is reinforced by chilled out guy's glasses, being star shaped could just be a trope thing rather than any real hinting, but they could have been big round ones and still given him the same vibe so there's a chance the design choice was intentional. The name of the performance is also called "Sundown", which is when all the stars come out. At the end of the other performance, you can see the stage design makes it look like the sun is setting on the crowd, and the background shows it is night time- the stars have come out, when only minutes ago the main girl was out in the street in plain daylight.
WOW! I love this interpretation! The idea of people representing parts of a solstice in a summer solstice festival- Is an AWESOME idea! To add on to your idea; When thinking about all of the stars of the act being in "formation." Perhaps Sacha is not just a star but part of... A constellation? Even stars in constellations will have their own names. But not all stars will have names most of the time; Notice how Sacha is the only to have his name mentioned? This entire film is based on "teamwork" and how every "star" of the act, is essential and wanted/needed. Every star is needed to make a constellation.
This was the perfect showing of preshow panic. It seriously made me so hooked and invested like "Oh no where is Sacha??" before I was even halfway through. The sudden and random changes in perspective really added to the tension and characters. I'm devastated we don't see the performance though
This may be late , but I’ve watched this many MANY times. And I love how natural there movements are, also how they talk over eachother when they are panicking , naturally instead of one sentence after the other. I LOVE THIS!
The lower frame rate, warm colors, and smooth pans are all such interesting stylistic choices, I adore this. Would love to see more work from the artists!
i really love the dialogue on this! it feels really natural and the pacing is absolutely perfect! it's rare to see an animated short with actual dialogue instead of music, and I really like the more realistic feel it gives the film
I never see such beautiful and charming characterization and character design, I'm extremely in love with this masterpiece Edit: I also saw references to other animations on this channel (like LE RETOUR DES VAGUES) what a phenomenal touch!
@@evemrx7423 Maybe I'm wrong about this reference, but anyway at the minute 2:28, exactly after that child, appears a tourist that seem to be a reference to the protagonist of RETOUR, in my opinion. A cameo also underlined by the choice of the cut of the frame that focuses on who passes by rather than on the protagonists who are talking.
It seems like Star glasses and fluffy hair would be very kind parents. They seem to a kind harmony in their personalities. (Especially their end reactions to Sasha)
Phenomenal. Beautiful. In 5 minutes I fell in love with every character, was immersed in this fantastical world, and was completely invested in the story!
This reminded me of studio ghibli, and I mean that as a high compliment, but it also had its own distinct style and feel which i think is incredible. Huge congratulations to everyone who worked on this, because it was so many levels of wondrous.
1:05 his makeup crayon rolls off the table after being bumped by his elbow. God there are so many little things in this short that I notice each time I watch it.
No ones talking about the Easter egg at 2:27 with the main characters from “T’as vendu mes rollers” and “le retour des vagues” walking by in the background!!!!! Also 4:04 where we see the tambourine guy with the hair 😁 I LOVE THIS FILM
this reminded me so much of samuel beckett's 'waiting for godot'. although here we kind of get a resolution with sacha's "appearance", it's still resonant of beckett's play in a way that says "hey, the characters kinda revolve around this other absent character but this story isn't necessarily about that particular character", or something to that effect. very cool.
The characters are so alive and their talkings so real. Too bad that ended up before we saw? their presentation. Was it a sucess or a failure? And where in the world is Sacha? Did he abandon the group or something tragic happened to him? This short should have a sequel.
in the end, sacha showed up! that's what all of the characters were smiling about. also, on an animators Twitter, there's a board, and on it it says that sacha was lost eating crepes!
What I interpreted from it- There'll be times in life when things go downhill, a part of us gets lost, we are in total chaos. But eventually things will fall back at right time. Gobelins did not fail to mesmerize, yet again!
oh i see XD i wanted to believe that sasha didnt appear because he was the sun XD like he only appear once the sun had set, but its understable that the story is deeper as what you had explained XD
The amount of personality variety is insane why nobody is talking about this? I mean we have the nervous one the chill one the concerned one the hard working one etc… this is so beautiful
This was incredibly beautiful visually, but also emotionally. I felt every single one of their worries and it was truly spectacular. The chaos and the calm, and the flow of the narrative. I just couldn't look away.
I like how the star glasses guy is willing believe that Sasha is taking perhaps the world's longest leak but walking around the sandspit for 4 hours because he was nervous was somehow too stupid! 😂

I would do anything to see these characters fleshed out.

Those same mask-wearers are depicted as giants at 3:33 when the tone has shifted.
They might be performing on stilts but I like your interpretation more
Reminds me of theater. Everything realistically is made by other people but it almost feels like fantasy while you’re preforming

Anyone else notice the each pair is the opposite of on another?
The calm girl is paired with the angry diva.
The strict leader is paired with the laid back guy.
So if Sasha is supposed to be paired with the nervous boy, perhaps Sasha is more..... adventurous? 🤷
Prolly why they’re bold enough to go somewhere else literally during the show and jump in at the last moment and make some imrov performance
Character design so good!!
I bet Sasha is the super cool one who's charismatic, friendly and cool and has a way of putting everyone else at ease when he's around and the light of the party.

Barring the beginning presumably before they've started
I rewatched for that poor pen & I think my favorite detail was Glasses guy wearing his street clothes right up until they got to the stage 😂 it was just so quick & in character i never noticed the first time 😹
Check out DUO if you haven't already! It's a similar animation from Gobelins
This! I've been in a theater company and there are lots of clashing personalities but you need to be a team for the performance
LOL
The costumes and dances were fun, even the makeup was sometimes despite the fact that I've always had hair that refuses to stay neat while pulled back in a bun or even a ponytail.
The multi-winged bird might have some Eastasian influence as well though I can't quite place it and the Solar motif obviously draws from the Latin American Sun of May, maybe drifting towards the European Sun in Splendour or some other solar traditions across the world at some points.
something about us not seeing Sasha or even the show makes this perfect. Like we see their real lives, not the show they put on for their audience
yess and this is probably the most memorable moment for them, not the performance/festival, just worrying where tf is sacha 😂
We actually see him a few times throughought the video
@@unhommequicourt wait really? timestamp pleasee
I still don't get how Sasha shined the brightest even thought he barely showed up on the whole video.
Ikr, like sure i like the in late kine of study but its a nice change of pase bc you feel everyone being desperate bc they cant find their friend
thats really thought provoking. and yes i like this trope too, where like you said its the opposite of 'im late' scenario that's happening

Yeah, the work is brilliant. Now imagine they had complete high tier story on hands and resources to draw it 50 hours of screentime.
has anyone yet mentioned the cool mishmash of aesthetics from different cultures? the first time i watched i couldn't put my finger on where this was yet the setting feels so convincing, then i realized its a huge hybrid! really fascinating choice, and the result is gorgeous
ikr! it's beautiful, it almost feels like a distant future, all cultures are mixed together in beautiful colorful combination-- watching this kinda made me want something like that, different cultures separated into different acts but ultimately united in the same event
and no I don't say this as someone who hasn't experienced/been part of something, I've learned dances and performed in school in my homeland, honestly something like that could bring a wonderful sense of unity-- just other people learning and teaching about their own different yet similar customs, I would love being a part of that
some people might prefer keeping their customs to themselves and honestly that's fair aswell, there could be more exclusive events/areas for the same event if a large portion of people involved would like to keep the event small for safety or cultural reasons
In less than 5 minutes I've become fully invested in and have fallen in love with all 5 five of these characters

I love it

I think its good as is
This is a very interesting concept.
At the end of the other performance, you can see the stage design makes it look like the sun is setting on the crowd, and the background shows it is night time- the stars have come out, when only minutes ago the main girl was out in the street in plain daylight.
underrated comment
...wow
Really good analysis
Why is trying to find symbolistic meaning such a thrend on youtube comments?
-I can't believe Sacha's betrayed us!
-I CAN'T BELIEVE SACHA'S DEAD!!

This was the perfect showing of preshow panic. It seriously made me so hooked and invested like "Oh no where is Sacha??" before I was even halfway through. The sudden and random changes in perspective really added to the tension and characters. I'm devastated we don't see the performance though
