Hey brother!! Yes what they did with the DS was definitely cool, especially when you consider that this machine was developed even before the 400ex was released. I read an article where Bombardier said they started developing the DS in 96. So they weren't taking design ques from anything else on the market really...

I had seen a few of them around my area when I was growing up, but only knew one guy who had one. I remember thinking how cool it looked, compared to everything else. I was definitely huge compared to my 300EX. I saw one last year in a local trail. It was pretty whooped. Missing the front fenders, and rears were warped. No lights and very bald holeshot tires. It wasn't treated well in its life, but it was still running, lol.
My cousin raced his Ds650 Baja in the early 2000's in the 12hr Endurance in La Tuque Quebec :) I was a teenager and the time and always wanted one ever since, in 2019 I found one roughly 5 hours away from my hometown in Ottawa Ontario, I couldn't find anything that was in good shape, found one 5 hours away in mint condition, spent about 3000$ in it, bushings, sprockets, chain, bearings, slip on, jet kit and rode it for about a year, I ended up selling due to lack of parts :( if it wasn't for that I def would of kept it, thing was an animal on wide open fast trails, was running CST Pulse tires 22'' rears and 23'' fronts giving it a slight edge on the top end factory sprockets, not that much on acceleration however it was hitting 80mph and still had some left, Awesome machine just a pain to get parts for it, if you guys are interested I have a few videos of it, nothing crazy but its on my channel :) I'm on a 2022 outlander 650 now but if you look at my older videos you'll find the Ds650 :)
Another great vid...Remember when these came out and dirtwheels tested the raptor 660/400ex and the DS...I believe there biggest complaint was the kenda tire it came with if I remember correctly
Yes! They did a few shootouts with it back in the day, the Raptor 660, 400ex, Cannondale, banshee.. There was a few of them.. I couldn't tell ya about the tire complaint.. But I thought they came with ITPs, I could be wrong tho..

I had a 2005 ds 650x, and rode the crap out of it. I've had a few mishaps, that was driver error. I rode it for 12 years before selling it. That thing was bad ass and still ran strong. You had to do something stupid to flip it. It was a very solid machine
I never got one back in my atv days because they were too big for the East Coast trails i rode. Now I wish I could buy a new one with modern updates done to it.
When these came out a guy was racing a 2000 model in arenacross and outdoor mx. It was all 400ex's and that guy on the DS. I still remember that guy jumping the infield double in ax. That thing landed like a ton of bricks. One night he wrecked it off that jump and rolled. I wish I remember or knew what happened to him. I think he raced it for a year and a half. I don't know for sure if he quit altogether or got a 400ex.
I’ve owned 2- DS650’s(still have an ‘01). Its been a great quad! But, like u stated- it’s Achilles heels are no reverse & it’s weight. Regardless, I think Can-Am should make a new, improved version of this machine!
I never got to try one of those. I remember the 450 version of it, though a lot of people used to race them, Can you guys do a video on the Suzuki LT-R 450 that thing was a beast 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
To answer your question on why there was no reverse in 2004 during a brp annual dealer meeting they asked us what we would like to see on the DS and everyone said a reverse gear the tech then asked us anybody ever take a DS tranny apart nobody in the audience raised their hand the tech said if we ad a reverse gear the existing gears would have to be slimmer wich would probably just blow up from the shear torque that rotax produced
Are you going to the IXCR rd. 7 in 2 weeks? I’m gonna be there with my friend who races A-class bike in the PM races on sundays. Hopefully we can find each other!
I’ve ridden a lot of sport bikes and I can say the Ds is my top for sport quad, but only problem is they don’t make parts and the parts are impossible to find so I had to get rid of it and got a outlander not as sporty but I love it just as much.
That's why everyone swaps the motors out. I been thinking about putting a maico 700cc 2 stroke motor on mine when the motor fails. The sprocket is on the correct side too.
Agree with most of this video. Especially it’s handling in the wide open logging road trails - simply no better handling sportquad to ride on wide open dirt roads. It is not great in tight trails as mentioned, but still plenty ridable. And No offense to the rider here, but he makes the front end seem much heavier than it really is. I’m not nearly as big as him and I can dead lift the front end of mine into a standing position without too much trouble.
Thanks! This one has a "custom" front bumper that adds some weight for sure, but I guess the point I was trying to make was it's much much heavier than any other quad.. I legitimately wouldn't try picking up the front end by myself.. But I ain't what used to be..
@@DirtObseXXion definitely way heavier than any other sportquad aside from maybe the kfx700. great video and review of the DS though. This sportquad is a forgotten gem. With all the current inflation that has occurred in the used sportquad market, the DS can still be found for a very reasonable price in comparison to the more common sportquads. They are absolute tanks in terms of reliability, and a few minor mods to the oem carb (“OMR” stock carb mods”) and pipe unleashes a lot of power this engine hides in factory form. These rotax engines can run over 20k miles before needing a rebuild. If you don’t believe that, just check out the mileage on some older bmw funduro f650’s and you will find many are still running with that type mileage on them. You will absolutely never find a 450r that can rack up that kind of milage without needing a rebuild.
@@S4NORICE I believe that 100%, the one we have has been abused and it runs ridiculously strong after 20years. I almost bought a much nicer one a few years ago for 3500, I wish I had now.
I couldn't find a reliable claim so I didn't include it in the video but what I read was 71hp at the crank but 41-43 on a dyno.. When this one was new it had the cams done, a cdi box, jets and we put a new exhaust on because the one that came on it was shot... I'd say low to mid 40s was a pretty legit claim stock. This may have a touch more but some of it is robbed by time and weight..
If I recall bombardier first rebranded to brp and produced the first gen outlanders the 400 the 440xt etc. Then switched to can am which I think was done purely to bring it more to the American consumers. I’m just glad Canada is still the first part of the name lol.
Sounds right.. From what I read it was a departmental division of the company.. Canam being powersports and Bombardier focusing on aircraft.. It was definitely a good move though, CanAm really took off after that.. Im seeing almost as many Spyders and Rykers in Kentucky as Harley's.. Which is saying a lot for this area. Like you said, the reverse gear on the DS would have made it more competitive with the Raptor. Unfortunately, I don't think Can-Am had much interest in the Sport market.
True. This thing was pretty ahead of it's time but it missed a few marks and was primarily marketed to the West Coast. I'd love to see CanAm make another go at the sport market with the new single they have.. I doubt it would be happen but I know I'd be grabbing one!

@@allthrottlemotors4963 Thanks brother, I definitely appreciate that.. I've heard about the oil bleeding, isn't there an indicator light that comes on if there's air in the system?
Kind of, it feels different though, because it's so much heavier, wider, and you're sitting down it more like a 4x4 ATV. It almost feels more renegade like than Raptor like.. But the weight is definitely higher than a 450 class sport ATV.
It feels like a different power plant for sure.. The Outlander power hits harder in the low end, the DS comes to life in the mid range.. Peak power is higher in the rpms than I expected but it definitely has some ponies, especially considering its weight.. I read 71hp at the crank and low to mid 40s on a dyno stock.. This one isn't stock tho. It had a cam, cdi box, jet and exhaust done when it was new.. Upper 40s to low 50s is probably a reasonable claim for this one.. I thought this was a really cool quad when I first saw it in the trails, definitely a unique sport quad.
Pretty cool machine for sure!
The best wheelie quad I've ever had, Especially with Ron Woods upgrades.....Ride it all day
That's a heavy front end to bring up! Very cool tho, thanks for checking out the vid!
Bravo best atv channel on UA-cam!
Thanks man! Somehow that compliment just hits harder from a dude with the perfect username 👌 🤣🤣🤣
Keeping sport quads alive! I love you guys!!! I want to be your friend.
Lol! You got it Ronald! Although you might want to reconsider if you actually meet us 👊🤣🤣🤣
Great review. It is a machine that does not fit every rider, but it is still a great machine. We must respect can am because they tried something different than the other brands, back when they released the DS 650.
Hey brother!! Yes what they did with the DS was definitely cool, especially when you consider that this machine was developed even before the 400ex was released. I read an article where Bombardier said they started developing the DS in 96. So they weren't taking design ques from anything else on the market really...
It's so great to see another ds650 in such great condition
Heck yeah! Very unique machine, we still have it.. It needs some work but parts are really hard to find.
@@DirtObseXXion tell me about it, took me 4 months to get all the parts just to get it ready for racing
@@ghost_wolf_2146 Oh damn, you're racing it!?! That's awesome!
@@DirtObseXXion Went to my first race with it and my dad. I crashed and couldn't do my race, but my dad took 2nd and their was another ds650 in the race. On thing that was damaged was an original sticker on one of the hand guards.
I haven't ever shredded one but the minute I set on it... Felt like a jet ski for sand. Should probably give it a sand test just to see if it sticks up to it's name!
It's love on the ole buttox!
Great video on this piece of atv history. Definitely a unique machine.
Thank you brother!
I’ve been waiting for this one, I used to have one of these.
It's a great machine, im really glad we got our hands on one..
They are almost universally treated poorly! It's very rare to see a really really nice one..
Awesome! I'd love to get this one prestine but like you said, it's hard to find parts! I'll definitely check your vids out!
Im 5'10 and 133 lb, ive been riding this quad 6 years now and i can handle it very well now, so much fun in this quad in baja california mexico
That's awesome!!!
I bought it new in 2000. Still have it and love it.
That's awesome!
I have a ‘07 model, bought it for dune playing (I live in So Cal) as I have a four and a two stroke dirt bikes I enjoy, but didn’t take long to enjoy the DS650 in the trails as well as the dunes.
Awesome! I was wondering how these would do in the dunes since they're so heavy.. Definitely a unique and fun machine! Thanks for the comment!

I had one as a kid being 115 pounds trying to whip this thing was truly a enjoyable fight, whenever I rolled it it was the biggest pain ass to flip it back over, I felt like a big man but I was not.
Lol! Quite a beast!
Owned mine since 2009. Wanted one since 2004. Will never sell it. It's hydro dipped in digital camo now. You learn to live without reverse. Love talking to people about it. They've never seen them.
Reverse definitely isn't a deal breaker.. It's a great and unique quad that I'm glad we got to experience.. They're very rare around our area
Greetings from Germany, i have a Baja X from 2005 and it runs perfectly! In Germany you can run that Beast Streetlegal full powered and it runs about 140KM/H (86MpH +). Eyecatcher...
I love it and build an FCR 41 Carburetor on the Machine, Thumbs up!
Awesome! Thanks for checking it out!
Pretty cool machine for sure.
Thanks Rick!
I had a 2005 ds 650x, and rode the crap out of it. I've had a few mishaps, that was driver error. I rode it for 12 years before selling it.
That thing was bad ass and still ran strong. You had to do something stupid to flip it. It was a very solid machine
Awesome! 12 years is a heck of a run..
That ds is sweet! Never had a chance on one. But idk, those guns stole the show. 💪🏻💪🏻 Very distracting..,🤣🤣. Another great video🤘🏻

I never got one back in my atv days because they were too big for the East Coast trails i rode. Now I wish I could buy a new one with modern updates done to it.
I have 3 of them and I love them. Fun powerful and reliable
Wow 3? Sweet!
I can't imagine trying to sling one of these around a MX track!! That's pretty cool tho, must've been fun to watch..
Anyone see that sick yellow ltr450 at 6:23, shew that thing is beautiful 😍

Just love the reliability on my ds650
I have one. Everyone looks at it, i feel like a ferrari owner!
Lol! Yeah, not many around anymore
rode one a while ago. at 5'9 160 pounds it felt like a utility quad. let's not forget the bump steer. almost crashed a few times because of it
She's a big ole girl, that's for sure.. Definitely feels like a utility, more so than other sport ATVs anyway..
I’ve owned 2- DS650’s(still have an ‘01). Its been a great quad! But, like u stated- it’s Achilles heels are no reverse & it’s weight. Regardless, I think Can-Am should make a new, improved version of this machine!
I wanted one so bad when they first came out, I couldn’t afford it and bombardier interest was 17%
Dang! People probably make dumber decisions with SXS financing nowadays tho.. Ive heard of some pretty bad choices 🤣🤣🤣
Being a big asf guy I agree on that quad being meant for us 😂
I saw one of these on the sand with a hayabusa. He called it a bombabusa. Absolutely destroying drag sand rails
Sick!
Interesting info! I figured it was because the engine and tyranny were originally designed for a motorcycle..
Time for the DS450X 😎
🤘
Are you going to the IXCR rd. 7 in 2 weeks? I’m gonna be there with my friend who races A-class bike in the PM races on sundays. Hopefully we can find each other!
I'm sure the Viking will be there. Ne and Flyin Brian might be depending on weather and stuff.. We like to ride our ADV bikes out to the races..
Sweet! Just gotta hope the dirt is nice and moist, but not swampy!😁
such a different quad
Definitely an odd duck with the right side chain & mounted front fenders ! Sat plush for sure , But wow no reverse , ouch ….
Thanks Mikey!!
How is the long term reliability? Maintenance schedule? I want to get a used one
I’ve ridden a lot of sport bikes and I can say the Ds is my top for sport quad, but only problem is they don’t make parts and the parts are impossible to find so I had to get rid of it and got a outlander not as sporty but I love it just as much.
It's true, parts are super hard to find.. It's a unique machine fore sure.. Nothing quite like it
That's why everyone swaps the motors out. I been thinking about putting a maico 700cc 2 stroke motor on mine when the motor fails. The sprocket is on the correct side too.
OK never mind you guys did make a video on the Suzuki LT450R 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
awsome Vid

@@DirtObseXXion I must admit it 🍆
Agree with most of this video.
Met a guy at St. Anthony with 4 cylinder bike motor in one. He claimed it was the chassis for such a transplant. It ripped up Choke Cherry.
Yeah Square 1 said his buddy put a R1 motor in one...
I find one in absolut awesome condition, how much is something like that worth.very low hours on it looks like new
I’d love to see that Rotax in a usable frame. You’ve got me wanting to ride that thing before she goes on the market.
The DS is bulletproof! Could not kill it, except for the 2nd gear dog leg braking from abuse😂
I tore the Ganaraska forest up with 1 4 a few yrs 😎
great video! just curious if you know what horse power was on this machine stock?
I couldn't find a reliable claim so I didn't include it in the video but what I read was 71hp at the crank but 41-43 on a dyno.. When this one was new it had the cams done, a cdi box, jets and we put a new exhaust on because the one that came on it was shot... I'd say low to mid 40s was a pretty legit claim stock. This may have a touch more but some of it is robbed by time and weight..
@@DirtObseXXion wow very cool thank you!
Harley's to any other motorcycle is like 50:1

Tall Stance. Is it top heavy like the 700r?
Kind of, it feels different though, because it's so much heavier, wider, and you're sitting down it more like a 4x4 ATV. It almost feels more renegade like than Raptor like.. But the weight is definitely higher than a 450 class sport ATV.
What does the power feel like compared to a 850 outlander ?
It feels like a different power plant for sure.. The Outlander power hits harder in the low end, the DS comes to life in the mid range.. Peak power is higher in the rpms than I expected but it definitely has some ponies, especially considering its weight.. I read 71hp at the crank and low to mid 40s on a dyno stock.. This one isn't stock tho. It had a cam, cdi box, jet and exhaust done when it was new.. Upper 40s to low 50s is probably a reasonable claim for this one.. My 2020 Raptor with a big 3 definitely feels more powerful but it's also a lot lighter..
@@DirtObseXXion thanks for the info
