For wide open dirt road riding, this is hands down my favorite sport atv. Yes, rev limiter comes a bit too quick on the OEM cdi box, big gun or Ron Woods rev box makes it a whole new animal - really widens the rpm range. This quad gets more criticism than it deserves. Most critics don’t like its size and weight on a track or tight woods riding which is a fair complaint, but that’s simply not what they were made to excel at. However, get this quad in a big open space such as long winding dirt logging roads and it handles and rides incredibly stable at high speeds. And the best part is my hands and feet aren’t numb like they are after riding a 450 at crazy high rpms all day on the same roads. The motor will also far outlast a 450 motor. There are bmw motorcycles with this engine that have well over 30k miles on stock internals. Find me a 450 motor that can go that distance without a rebuild - you won’t! My brand new 2012 yfz grenaded in a year riding it at high rpms on wide open dirt roads. My DS has been riding the same wide open dirt roads for over 2 decades without a rebuild. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the 450 bikes. Appreciate you giving it a fair review coming from a 450, most riders like to bash the DS.
I rode one of these 20 years ago at 15 years old. It was bored over among other things and had the loudest exhaust I've ever heard on a bike to this day. At 15 I was hooked. Hit 4th on a straight and that was the start to a speed addiction. I've looked for one ever since specifically in the orange color.

Have a 2002, and if you want the wheelie or jump it, you need to crank down the suspension. Even when you do that, it gets a little sketchy because it's so front heavy.
I have a Ds650 Baja X up here in BC Canada. Never had a chance to try in in the dunes but used it plenty trail riding here, despite no reverse it does well. The power for sure demands respect and it gets squirrely in a hurry on a rough trail at speed. Been thrown once and that was enough 😫
Mines almost ready ro ride again..just got a few more things to button up. Things are very hard to find parts for. Took forever to find a used rear shock that wasnt beyond rebuild....
It definitely was the oddest rev range I've ever experienced! Huge is a good word for them. Everything on the quad is bigger. I owned a 2004 and loved how stable it felt. It was a very heavy duty built machine; almost overbuilt which caused it to feel like a station wagon when trail riding or jumping. Even with the big 3 added it wasn’t winning any drag races and anyone who says it does…you’re in denial guys. Very hard to control unless you bench press 300 pounds daily…😆. I still loved riding it but sold it to get back into a lighter nimble quad that could actually wheelie and could enjoy. Perfect quad for large people though!
The only thing I don’t like on those DS 650’s are those front fenders on the wheels. If only they made it more like the plastics on the rest of the bikes. Maybe DS 450 stye plastics on it would look mean.
The little fenders are pretty goofy. I was told they don't really provide much splash protection lol They're one of the most unique characteristics of the DS650 so I couldn't imagine it without them. The DS450 is a pretty awesome looking quad too, plus they handle super well!

Wait till you want to get a gearing reduction my ds is quite upgraded
Me and guys are heading to LIttle Sahara this weekend!!! See Ya there Pete (or hope to)
Have a 2002, and if you want the wheelie or jump it, you need to crank down the suspension. Even when you do that, it gets a little sketchy because it's so front heavy.
I’m sorry but was that a warrior in the intro?!!??!?? It’s about time I see one on your channel!
I love the Baja X models, they're so cool! hopefully you get your chance to rip the dunes someday!!
I wanted one of these so bad when I first saw them in atv magazine!! Shame they dont still make them
My nephew has one a true beast
I like weird quirks on vehicle and those fender/mud guards are pretty freakin sweet
Mines almost ready ro ride again..just got a few more things to button up. Things are very hard to find parts for. Took forever to find a used rear shock that wasnt beyond rebuild....
I had a Baja DS650...loved it.
Working on big changes on the DS650. Hopefully to be out a lot more next year 2023.
That thing doesn't rev high at all. I remember seeing one of these brand new and it was huge!!!
It definitely was the oddest rev range I've ever experienced! Huge is a good word for them. Everything on the quad is bigger. I couldn't believe how stable and easy it was to ride for how tall it was. Pretty wild and comfortable experience. With a stabilizer you could cruise the dunes all day on that thing!🤘
I have never heard of these before!!!
Had one for me it was fast in a straight line, but too much for me to throw around on the trails. So I had kind of a love hate relationship with it
love it when you get to test new machines. also where is all the 400ex content at?
We actually just filmed some riding with the 400ex last week! I may or may not have fallen off of it once 😅🤦♂️
@@PeteHager heck yeah cant wait to see it. She may be small but she will bite if your not paying attention lul they are much stronger machines than they look like they are
Had to sell mine 2 weeks ago, gonna miss it !
I wish we had as much areas to play in here in cali
I wanna see Pete ride a trike, or attempt to. xD
Lol I would be such a pansy on one 😂
The Batman DS at the very end of the outro of the video from little Sahara last year is mine, be interested to see what you think of it. It makes quite a bit more power than a stock DS, +6 swingarm, protaper bars, and steering stabilizer
I remember seeing your DS crew ripping around last season! You guy's had some fast machines, I'm glad I was able to ride a pretty stock example so now I can compare my experience with a more modified DS 👍
My favorite quad I've had.
I love these first ride videos. Do a banshee that be fun.
5 minutes gang!
Will we ever see some dirtbike content? Love the videos man!
I seen him ride a pit bike at the end of one of his videos. But he's not to confident with riding dirt bikes.
Hmm maybe someday. I do mountain bike so the idea of trying single track on a dirt bike does sound appealing. I just don't want to learn the hard way on a new toy and break myself 🥴😅
@@PeteHager You make a fair point, I started out on mountain bikes, worked my way into a 1984 Suzuki Fourtrax and then got a 2006 Raptor 660. Definitely start small and work your way up if you ever do haha. Great content either way man!
@@skylarkumm9450 If I did it would definitely be a smaller displacement 4 stroke to start out with. Bikes are so fast and capable so it's really easy to be over confident lol
@@PeteHager Like a Honda CRF250? Or a Yamaha YZ250? There's also the CRF230. Yamaha has the TTR 230.
i'd love to see you ride a raptor 250/350 and see what they can do ridden by a professional.
I use to use this quad in a video game years ago it was the fastest Atv then the banshee
Cool quads, never got the chance to ride one myself. Just looking at the dyno graphs of a piped/jetted one (45ish HP) and weighing 490lbs I can imagine they would feel a little.....underwhelming. Judging by the video these quads have the "I could ride this near the limit all day" type of feel to them. The DS always reminded me of a Ski-doo with wheels lol.
Sometimes the heavy vehicals phase you the noise and power up top can make it feel crazy fast! They are limit quads especially with handeling lol
You have some of the coolest content on your videos. I was always curious to see how that 650 handled. Great video as always. Where was this filmed?
Thanks man! This was filmed at Appleton OHV park in west central Minnesota. It's one of my favorite places to go for sport quads in the region. I've made a lot of videos there 👍
@@PeteHager yeah I happened to see the location as it being in Appleton. I was just wondering if that Appleton was located in MN or WI. I use to live in Appleton WI & I was wondering if that area you ride in was the WI one. I was hoping lol. I’m up in the WI north woods.
@@thenarrowpathatvchannel4316 Unfortunately your not the only one who's thought that. I actually hope to try out a ride park called Dyracuse in Wisconsin eventually. I went to a track called Stacker MX in Cornell Wisconsin this summer that was really fun! Theres some great riding in your neck of the woods, I know there's tons of trails to explore yet!
@@PeteHager a buddy of mine just informed me of Dyracuse. We planned on heading down there but work interfered so we didn’t get there. If your ever up here in Northern Wi, (Woodruff) give me a heads up. I’d love to hit the trails with you. My mom in law runs a bed & breakfast if you need a place to stay. I could hook you up for free, benefit of being a good son in law & taking care of her land. Lol. Just throwing that out there. 😁👍🏼
Awesome videos man ! Makes me miss my 2011 raptor 700R .
The suspension looks so crazy on that
First comment baby yes sir keep the grind
hey pete you should go to the cinders sometime it’s in flagstaff arizona. im here right know i have my honda 400ex it does great and im sure your quads would do better but there are huge hills to climb and a ton of butms
I love ur vids 💓
Love ur vid bud 🤟
Awesome vid man, what camera setup are you using?
Thanks for watching! I've been running Hero7's this whole time with the Dango gripper mount purple panda microphone. The first 5 minutes of this video shares my current set up 👍ua-cam.com/video/kWbckb-7TQM/v-deo.html
These are bullet proof if you take care of them properly. Mine has 200hrs on it and still runs fine. The sprag failed but that was from a shitty cdi box that caused a back fire on start up. I wish they still made engine parts like crankshaft and crank bearings
So spare parts for these are impossible to find?
@Joe S. Ibanez ebay is about it
The ds was nicknamed sand pig because it was built for the baja 1000 and dominated the dunes
its a rotary engine my boi thats like a sv650 bullet bike engine that atv the next year won the baja I had the limited edition one from 04 with the orange and black graphics it was mint
I have a mint barn find 03 Baja. And a 2022 raptor. If I had to pick one to take on a long bumpy trail ride. DS all day long
Hey Pete. I'm currently in the market for a new sport ATV. Being that you have spent considerable time on both the Raptor 700r, and the YFZ450R is there one you prefer? I ride everything from steep technical trails, snow, and very occasionally plan to take it to the track. I'm a very aggressive rider. Your input is really appreciated!
Reminds me of the atv offroad fury 3 days
love those things
You should look into a artic cat DVX 400 thos things are pretty nimble and they go good to and are super easy to wheelie
where do you mount your pov camera it always looks so cool
The first 5 minutes of this video shares the helmet cam set up. ua-cam.com/video/kWbckb-7TQM/v-deo.html Now that I have a new helmet I'm running the dango mount exactly as it is in that video 👍
Haha nice ds it has good power 😎 they are sow big, i drive a renegade 1000 and a ds 650 The riding height is not much difference🙈
Hi Peter, i'm just curious, you don't use any body protection other than helmet and boots? Good video dude.
Thanks for watching! It would be nice to wear a neck or chest protector but everything I've worn interferes with my helmet cam location..
@@PeteHager a chin mount will keep very similar point of view of your camera and will not interfere with the protection gear. See you on the next one! :D
Dem front fenders bracket def rub
What’s up, Pete? How’re you doing? Thinking about selling my 08 TRX700XX and buying a 2013 TRX450R. What do you think about the swap?
Hey man what year is your raptor.
I love my ds650 and how you lift up when you hit the gas,the suspension is great
Someone get this man on a trx700
Slow
@@Dqtwon lol ok bud
I’ve got a built yfz450, a guy wants to trade one of these for it…would it be a good trade? The yfz450 is an 05 with 08 motor and the bombardiar is an 2000 and I think stock?
What tyres would you recommend for a raptor 700r??
On the hunt so thought you be the guy to ask about it..
I actually just got a set of Obor Advent tires and I was pretty impressed with the traction they put down. I'd say the GBC XC masters are probably the most popular within the trail riding community. I also have the ITP GNCC tires and I've been really happy with them. I only have one ride on the Advents but am excited to try them more 👍
Which came first, DS650 or Raptor 660?
Thank God I went with the raptor 660.
Good bikes, do wish it had reverse.
same motor in my 2002 BMW F650gs!!
