- Can Am Renegade 1000R X-XC vs Can Am Outlander 1000R XT-P, 1000cc 4X4 ATV Shootout. ATVonDemand test riders Chad Westcott and Brent Johnson took a trip to Dirty Turtle Off-Road park in Bedford Ky to put 182 HP of the most powerful, trial focused, 4x4 ATVs head to head. The Can-Am Renegade 1000R X XC and Outlander 1000R XT-P.
Choosing between these machines could be tough. We know we’d be leaving a lot of capability on the table if we went with the Renegade, because the Outlander is an ideal tool for working, hunting, and camping. But how much performance would we leave on the table if we didn’t choose the Renegade and are there any other important differences we might not be considering.
Can-Am tells us they share identically tuned 91 HP Rotax 1000R engines with identical clutching, but we still expected the Renegade to pull out in front based on it’s lighter weight and the fact that it’s a friggen Renegade.
Suspension travel is also identical on the Outlander 1000 and Renegade 1000 with 9.2” up front and 9.9” out back. Fox Podium 1.5 shocks are used on both machines. The Renegade’s Podium RC2 shocks feature all the external adjustments you’d expect from high-end race shocks. The Outlander’s Podium QS3 shocks feature threaded spring preload along with simple intuitive 3-way compression damping settings. Power steering settings are slightly different with the two machines primarily for their different tire sizes.
Identical hydraulic disc brakes stop both machines and do a pretty good job of it too considering our rider and machine combos are nearly a half a ton of Rotax propelled mass.
As we finished our laps and our ride for the day it was pretty obvious to both of us what our decision would be if we were choosing between these machines. We’d opt for the greater utility of the Outlander in XT-P trim and sleep peacefully knowing we weren’t giving up much performance.
But if you're still having trouble deciding between the two keep in mind that Can-Am’s premium options are customizable, and the perfect blend of performance and utility for you could be the Outlander in X-XC trim.

Finally the wait is over as the two fastest 4x4 ATVs on the market head to head! Which would you choose or which one do you own?
Definitely the Outlander because of the work capability.
That Rene 4sure
Polaris Scrambler XP1000S is just something else !
I would have to say the outlander
@@rickeyem just drive a scrambler s with walker evans shocks.
I have owned the Outlander 1000r and had some amazing rides with it over the years and got to say I would buy it again. Thanks for sharing the video!!
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with the Outlander.
Thanks guys! Been waiting to see this one for awhile. You guys put together some amazing content!
Thanks for waiting. We're really glad you enjoy our work.
@@ATVonDemand You’re welcome! Thank you for making the videos.
Great video! Made it clear to what I’m looking for!
Glad to see some guys that are larger. I am 6'2" and 275 lbs i have an Outlander 1000 XT thinking about Renegade next time
We have some more content coming with the Renegade. Definitely a fun machine.
Coming from a Honda foreman and getting the Polaris Sportsman xp1000, I've done more trial maintenance in 6-8 months than I did in 6 years with the honda. I love all the storage space, anchor points on my Sportsman, not to mention the 90hp. great video guys. Having something and not needing it is great, the other not so much!! Utility all the way!!
The Sportsman 1000 is a pretty awesome machine. We have been fortunate enough to review it on a couple of occasions. We have a project coming out on one soon. Hopefully you're a subscriber so you'll see it.
Nice guys! Man, those are a couple of beasts!
They're pretty monstrous! Fun too.
Great job guys... 👍👍👍
Thank you Doc. Always glad to see you on premiere night.
I went from a Sportsman 850 to the Outty XTP 1000. And I’m loving it!!! The only thing I miss from the sportsman is being able to switch in and out of AWD while moving.
Yeah most of the guys in GNCC leave theirs in 4 wheel drive all the time.
I had an 850 sportsmen and went to a 850 out max xtp. Day and night difference in power even with the max. Handle ten times better also
Very good informational video!!💯🔥🤘🏼🤘🏼
Glad you liked it Jason.
Great video, waiting on my 2022 renegade 1000xxc right now. Hoping it shows up before the end of the year.
Thanks for watching and commenting. We hope you're Renegade shows up soon as well. Congratulations on the new machine.
Cant wait for this one! Two power monsters duking it out!
Nice video, keep em coming!
Also is there a scrambler 1k s vs rene showdown yet? Been wanting that one.
You won't have much longer to wait for this one. We were told by Polaris we would be getting another loner unit this year. That's when we were going to film the renegade scrambler shootout. Hopefully the Scrambler is still around.
@@ATVonDemand alright, thanks for the info
I’ve owned them both and I prefer the outlander but they are both nice quads. I had a 2020 1000 renegade XXC and I still own a 2019 outlander 1000 XTP.
I mostly ride on my property in central Florida, mostly muddy trails mixed with some deep sugar sand trails.
The biggest beef I had with the renegade (which I sold last year) was the high center of gravity, it feels like it wants to roll on corner entry. Also, it basically has no storage and the heat coming off the engine was almost intolerable in Florida.
Lastly, the renegade provides almost no mud protection, almost every speck of much hits you coming off the front wheels.
The renegade is lighter, is quicker off the line and turns a little tighter but the performance difference is pretty nominal in my opinion.
The Outlander is simply a more versatile quad. For 9/10 people watching this video, the outlander would be the hands down better choice.
Very informative video! Hilarious as well!
Glad we could entertain you. 👍
Nice comparison boys. Both machines have their place..
Most definitely! Like Chad said, had we filmed on AG &c style course the Renegade would have shined.
great review. I'm looking for a outlander xt-p comparison with an outlander xxc..............I'm in that market and can't see to make a choice.
I seriously never thought a 4x4 could keep up with pure sports on the trails until I saw some older guy ripping a 2013 ish renegade. Thing whipped like no one's business
Yet in GNCC racing, sport quads are still a little bit faster. In the sport 4 by 4 class, the Renegade rules.
@@ATVonDemand I'd totally Agree. And I think that the best riders on renegades probably come over from sport quads. You can't hop on an 800 pound machine with no experience and keep up with 450s and 700s
Hello guys, i m from Romania,i have a Renegade 2021 1000R with a little plus of horse power ,like a Complet dual HMF and softwear for engine. Is incredible machine,i use for extrem hill climb is just perfect ride .
Nice and real video here.
We are excited to have a viewer in Romania! ATV's are huge and Europe. Yeah we have seen some videos of you guys doing some crazy stuff over there on big 4x4s!
@@ATVonDemand i like yours contents very much. Renegade xxc here for agressive ride ori extrem ride is like verry high end. But i stil like the quallity ride of Scrambler . But for hill climb and fastest compotition is slow and heavy. Handling of Scrambler is very top end .
Nice! I am waiting for my 2022 xt-p 850!
Pretty confident you'll be thrilled with it.
@@ATVonDemand i am hope so coming from a 300 honda so i will be a big change! I was debating between xxc ,xtp, and xmr . The xtp took my heart 🤣. Plus i will be riding lots of roads and ditch bangin with lite mud and water.
I live in a state which I can license this renegade for street use. If purchased, I plan to use the Renegade for street use exclusively. What is the top speed and cruising speed of this unit on the street? I desire this info for the 2024 model year.
great review! my brother just got a 1000xxc renny.
New Renegade, that's awesome! Glad you liked the video.
Spot on shoot out…..personally I’m a Renegade fan
We don't blame you. For pure performance enthusiasts it's the way to go.
Bought the Outlander xxc.... extremely satisfied
It took me over a month to decide between the two myself. All I knew was that it had to be the 1k and an xmr. I went with the outlander because of the utility side of i. But then later learned that I could have changed the rear rack of the Renegade and it would have served the same purpose for me. An the only thing I don't like so far about the outlander is the long frame. Other than that I am very happy with my choice.
Yeah what is the top speed on the XMR? We have not reviewed that machine yet.
@@ATVonDemand I think it was 65 stock and then I got a pv3 from dynojet and it was hitting 86. Now it has 32" assassinators and the top speed it will hit is around 70ish but very squirrely lol not suggested. But I built it for mud.
🔥 video guys 👌
Really happy you enjoyed it. Sorry for the slow reply.
Nice !!!
Thank you.
some big ol boys right there
Not slowing them down.
Have you all ridden the Outlander X XC 1000 at all? Wondering if the performance/ride/utility strikes a nice blend of these two machines.
I own an 18. 1000 xxc outlander. Bought it new. It now has 1,000 miles on it. It's tuff. Fun & I've owned many can ams including Renegade 800 & 1000 xxcs... The Renegade is a little more fun....it's lighter & ya can throw it around easier. The outlander does not throw mud all over you but over all....the Renegade is more fun but the outlander is worth every penny because it has many more practical uses. 2 different animals but they are both fun. I like both to be honest
3rd hour rolled xxc outlander upside-down. Used to racing solid axle.
The solid axle machines are better handling.
I own a 21 renegade 1k xxc. I weigh 140lbs but ride quite aggressive so I actually stiffened up my high speed compression for the fast stuff and softened my low speed compression for the slow stuff (A simple turn of a flat head and you guys couldve had the renegade softer for the rough stuff). I also added one of can ams many options for racks and added the small rear rack that can carry storage boxes, fuel, and/or a cooler. I prefer nothing on my front fenders as to not block my view of the trail and I like being able to see the ground in front of my tires better. I also go through tight areas so I know if I had the larger fenders of an outlander they wouldve been ripped off or cracked. I added a winch and hitch to the quad so I am able to move trailers around my yard, pull my buddies who break down back to the truck, or winch people out of mud holes or trees off the trail.
Imo the only differences that matter between the two is the outlander has less adjustable suspension but has larger racks and fenders. If you are an aggressive rider I suggest the renegade. If you are just casually trail riding and dont want to get as muddy and/or want to use the quad a good amount for work around the house or on a farm then I suggest the outlander. Both are absolutely amazing machines
Thank you for such a great comment. We appreciate all of this input and owner feedback. Good for everyone.
What winch? just got the same one. did it bolt right in?
@@jacobszykulski268 Tusk winch. Yes it comes with a mount for your machine
I just started working at a Can-Am, Polaris, and Yamaha dealership and know very little about atvs and what's available. I come from the enduro and mx world but a bad back has me questioning a change in rides. I did 8-10 laps recently on a mx track (first time riding after back surgery) and it wrecked my back for a week. Looking for tips or model recommendations. 6 foot 220 lbs living in Colorado.
Get a can am 850 either the outlander for work or get the 1000 renegade for fun their suspension is the best in the game ive got two herniated disc in my back and I still regularly jump my 1000 renegade 10feet inthe air and it's so soft
Great review, any idea if the Outlander 1000R XT-P fit in the bed of a newer F150 with the 5.5 ft. bed?
They won't fit.
Yea with the tailgate down
Not gonna fit even with the tail gate down 1000s are stretched
i know they are considered ugly or cheap or out of date but i love the fender on my 2007 honda foreman.
It's the type of hard fender that is trim all around with a heavy emphasis near the bottom of the wheel well with a much softer and flexible plastic the amount of time i've ripped those off while navigating over rock or narrow trees in trail just to be able to put them back on in an instant is ridiculous.
id be mortified to break the fender on these new machines, anyone with experience with this...how brittle are they?
I want the outlander 😩
Wished Can-Am came with a top head light or is there a after market one out there?
You could possibly mount a small lightbar on your handlebars but it would likely impede your view of the gages. Perhaps there's something in the after market we are not aware of.
You guys should do the comparison between the 2024 can am outlander xxc and the 2024 can am Renegade xxc
@@user-ct7bq9qx5r good suggestion
@@ATVonDemand thanks
Is that a square tire setup on the outlander?
No sir, But we would try that.
Love the content you do, but surprised you guys didn't compare "fun factor" a bit more, because I think that's where the weight makes more difference. I came from a sport quad and love my renegade, but I don't think the outy would have been playful enough. I can still whip around my renny and it wheelies pretty well and feels a bit more sporty than the outlander even if it doesn't translate to a real performance difference. Keep up the good work!
I use my outlander for work too. Thats the main reason I went with the outty, also I love the big dash on my 2020 xtp 1k
@@dillydilly6430 funny, I like the small dash on the renny! But that's why they make different ones. If I needed the outlander for work, I definitely would have liked the racks and winch.
When you're changing direction quickly a lot the renegade does feel a bit lighter. It's definitely the one we would race.
Going through a small puddle of water and being totally covered in mud is not fun 🤣
Great review!! I can’t believe what the dealership are charging for “freight and set up” 800-$900 in Washington state. Total Bullshit guess I’ll buy one when they go back to some what normal.
We can understand why they are not giving discounts right now but freight and setup charges are BS. We imagine there are some other people on the sidelines right now waiting for things to settle down. Really glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I order a 2022 XT1000 but im change out the suspension cause i do ride hard
Heck yeah, throw a set of Elkas on that bad boy.
You all should come down here to rush off-road in rush ky
It would be cool to check that place out. We see it advertised a lot.
What tires do you have on renegade ?:)
We installed Kenda Bearclaw EVO tires on both machines. We give details on then in the video.
I love the outlander . Wish I could afford to trade the sportsman xp 1000 in on one to go with muh turba X3!
Great work bros ! Both awesome machines.
Be careful, those side-by-side cages have been proven to cause low T. JK
@@ATVonDemand 😂 hahaha that’s funny . I hope four wheelers never ever die ! But I’m not gonna lie that turbo X3 is fast fast and fun fun lol . I’ve got the XP 1000 sportsman to keep rocking on so I’m still in the atv club right !? Lol
Love to have a 1000R-Xc
They are fun.
Does the Renegade have a electric speed limiter like the outlander does? The outlander is limited to 65mph (last I knew) is the ren' The same or is it "uncorked"
We believe it is the same but what have to confirm it. We rarely reach that kind of speed in our area. We do not ride on roads.
@@ATVonDemand ok... thanks anyway 👍...
Damn Chad did you gain a ton of weight or get into competition body building? Or both?
Hmf exhaust and dynojet tuner for both
If money were no object we would consider the Dino jet power vision. You can get them through HMF as well.
asyik bget mainnya pkek mobil kereta gitu keren ya
Una es para fines mas deportivos y la otra es para mas para el trabajo verdad?
Outlander for the win!!!!
No winners and losers in this 1. Just two bad-ass quads.
Well I have both in my toy box and the renegade blows by the out lander in every way. So much that I do not ride the out lander at all.
2:16 about rolled the outlander scarred me a bit
He saved it. 😁
Wow,, heavy’s driving 🥹lol!
They're 1000s. You should see these dudes now. They've lost a bunch of weight.
I've been thinking about trading in my Sportsman 1000 for a Renegade XXC.....do you think it's an upgrade?
100%. I went from a 16 scrambler 1k xp to a 21 renegade 1k xxc. Huge difference! Renegade is so much better in every way
Faster, agile , add a rcjw exhaust and that renegade will smoke any quad. Even in the dunes . I own a raptor 700rse and my renegade smokes that one too. Lol
My friend had rjwc on his renegade 1k and they sounded good but took them off because after all day of riding it gave him a headache and it was annoying always hearing his exhaust anytime he got on the throttle through our headsets in our helmets
@@cautionontherun30 In a straight line.
@@jaretaustin14 There's a reason we use quiet after market exhausts. Is more power less headaches.
I’m torn between outlander 850 and renegade 670
I want an outlander 1000!
We will have a new test coming for you on one in the near future.
I own a renegade 1k it is a beast.
Heck yeah it is.
Now they some country boys right ther
True that!
would be a better comparison with the outlander 1000 xxc
Can am Renegade 1000 the beast
Yes it is.
This video changed my potential decision.
Glad we could help.
Renegade!
My only issue is with the price of the XTP 1000r. Wow! After sales tax and registration you can plan on more than $16,000 dollars!
I got quoted a little less then 20k for a 2022 here in cali.. I was like wtf
@@alonsoarellanocarryoptics keep voting democRAT
Yeah that’s how much I paid for mine just a little less the 20k
2023 machines have the same shocks outlander xxc models
Please make a video about outlander xxc!!!
Good suggestion. It will probably depend on availability.
Outlander in my future
what about wheelies? that is something that I’m interested in knowing.
what about them?
Well coming from a sport quad background, wheelies are part of normal riding. I know they will both wheelie, but how much harder is the outlander than the renegade being its heavier?
Renegade all day!
Some of us would definitely prefer the Renegade.
why isnt this xxc vs xxc
We did not have the xxc version of both machines. Also , The Outlander XXC does not have as much utility capability as the XTP. The suspension on the XTP is also a little more recreation. Friendly as far as tuning and valving.
12:02
Are these the guys from dirt obsession
Yes
Need renegade 1000 xmr vs outlander 1000 xmr
That would be cool
I have a 2009 outlander I bought new. I recommend it again.
Im buying a outlander xxc 2023.
Killer!
Staying in a shed is still decent.
Well, it's a heated and air conditioned shed with a table, chairs, microwave, a few bunks if you want to spend the night. Plus it gives us a place to stash our cooler and gear. They're done up pretty well.
@@ATVonDemand yeah I know. It's the same thing pretty much everywhere you go. Just a large Amish type shed that has the amenities you need. Better than a tent but not worth it unless you split the cost 😅👌🏻
lol those two dont need anymore power in my opinion
We tend to agree although they run very hot in stock conditions so changing the fuel map is It's a good idea.We were surprised how many people were asking for more horsepower in the comments of our stock test.
;
5 can am outlander 1000 can am renegade 1000 making machine I need every monthly send me farm veng district let go
Bombardier will never ever get any business from me after they killed off Evinrude. Sorry Bombardier my 14k went elsewhere.
I live in Montenegro, I can't buy a quad of 1000 cubic meters because my monthly salary is 120 € ... lmfao your not gaining 10hp with a quit restricted can n programmer thats funny shit
Okay okay, That's not peak power. That's overall. There would only be A few more horse power at peak. The exhaust in fuel optimizer does make a noticeable difference. But it's definitely not a 100 horsepower.
@@ATVonDemand and ya im not a troll read the first comment and you said 10hp not me one could only hope and it should be 10hp for what the programmer and slip on pipe cost
