Her situation was not a typical one...the baby staying in the hospital for 70 days is not the norm. But I really feel everyone who is pregnant SHOULD have some type of insurance. There are programs for those with lower income, so hopefully most people in that situation would have insurance.
The actual bill was only $6800 which is more than how much she saves in taxes by not living somewhere like the UK and everyone has the option to get free gov healthcare here if they cant afford it....

And while having insurance the family still ended up with $200k in medical bills. You can watch the video and hear the devastation in the voice of the caller.

This is the most realistic one of these I’ve seen. She is a married, working professional (in a normal job- not selling used underwear online) and has real expenses and debts. The norm in the US is not to be 22 with zero debt and 40k in savings. Most students have insurmountable amounts of loans, etc. More power to those people with zero debt and I want to be there myself but this was interesting to see someone who lives like the average person.
I'm glad I live in Sri Lanka, there's a lot we don't have, but at least we have free healthcare and education, which is why I'm not buried in debt by student loans and can actually save some of my meager salary.

I am 40 years old with no children. At 37, I was making 26K and I return to school to be a nurse. Got my first job and will be making 61K, but I also increase my student loans and will have 75K to pay off. So, while I doubled my pay, I have increase what I owe to uncle Sam.

In my country to have a baby and to ensure to get all medical care for pain and other things, is about 200 - 300 dollars? All the other care is free. Health care if you're under 18, studying or working is free, and if you're not its about 30 dollars a month. Our system is a little corrupt, so you gotta give doc a 50 or a 100 to get better care than regular generic stuff in case of small operation, and a bit more if it's more serious, but other than that medical costs and everything else in the States is is ridiculous...

everyone is so shocked about the hospital price, but hospitals raise the price substantially when its through insurance rather than out of pocket. It's not really 300,000 they just charged the insurance company that much. That being said, im sure it would've been a hefty out of pocket bill, but I dont see it being more than 100k.
We just had a baby without insurance and it was a fraction of what they would've charged an insurance company. We actually paid less for the whole pregnancy than what we would've paid on monthly insurance bills alone. If there wasn't insurance medical costs would drop because people would actually know what they were buying and hospitals wouldn't be able to drive up the prices.

That's a great idea for asking for money instead of presents. I was lucky that my dad set up a savings account for me when I was young. I continued to save the money I'd receive and put it in the bank with my dad.
