We have had a running 'discourse ' as to what kind of pickles to put in tartar sauce. Some say sweet relish. I am a firm believer that only dill pickle will do!
Dave, I don't know where you find the time! Seriously. Thanks for all you do. I, like a lot of us, realize it takes so much effort to put out the quantity and especially the quality of videos that you do. Let alone running a school, a business and a Facebook page, not to mention having a family. I hope you keep doing what you do and I pray for you, your family and your instructors. I'll keep purchasing from your store and maybe someday I will be able to take a class or two!
P. S. I was at a grocery store today. Leeker's family stores. They actually had "Dad's old fashioned" root beer, cream soda, sasparilla, even red and blue cream soda. I thought these were a thing of the past, long gone.
I've never been one to watch a lot of cooking videos before, but I am really enjoying this entire series that you're doing. I strongly prefer the simplicity and authenticity of your videos to the very highly produced ones that I occasionally see online. I also like the setting of the outdoor kitchen much more than a kitchen in an indoor studio. The appearances from Zahn (sorry if I spelled it wrong) are a nice bonus.
Awesome video Dave. Brought back a many of memories of October fish fry we did after running lines in camp. Try dipping your spoon in water before you scoop the hush puppy batter . Slides into the oil smoother .
Dave, I have a hush puppy recipie that is easy and from what people tell me is the best they have ever had. 1 cup of corn meal 1 cup of self rising flower 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp of black pepper 2 table spoons of sugar I cup finely chopped onions DARK BEER OF YOU CHOICE Butter milk In a big mixing bowel, combine all dry engrediants, then add 1 cup of buttermilk, and enough of beer to make the consistency to where when you stick a spoon in the mix sticks to the spoon. These hush puppies come out light and fluffy due to the beer. I basically came up with this recipie by trial and error. When I cook crappie the family demands these hush puppies. I really think what makes these things so good is the beer. It acts like baking soda and makes the hush puppies light and delicate. I like catfish but crappie is the winner around my house. Thanks for sharing and try the beer next time instead of baking soda. The onions really add to the flavor. Take care and thanks for your channel.
Another great video, I love be some catfish and hush puppies, anyone remember in Smokey and the Bandit when Justice walks into the same diner as Bandit . He asks for a Diablo burger and make it quick I’m in a g-damn hurry. Then he goes to the door and yells at junior “you wants sumpin’? Juniors response is classic “ get me some hush puppies daddy”!!
Dave, THAT WAS AN AWESOME VIDEO!!!!!!! I love catfish, it's such an under appreciated fish. Grilled with basil over it...and especially fried!!! The hush puppies looked amazing and I imagine that tartar sauce is out of this world delicious!!!!! Wether it be cooking videos or survival videos...KEEP EM COMING BROTHER!!!!!
Good hushpuppy's are always a great addition to a meal. How can you not love deep fried, seasoned cornbread. Really enjoy seeing how others make them their own.
Many people think catfish is nasty, wrong, Me too. Prepared the way Dave did his fish makes an excellent dinner, with just a little catsup added to the tarter sauce (my way) Down here in the southern states catfish is preferred over most other fish. Add just little Creole seasoning to the batter, and a side of fried potatoes, to make it even more better. The neat thing here is Dave's home made tarter sauce, I'll bet that little dash of pickle jar juice puts it over the top. ;-)
I completely understand these are not backwoods meals, most people would be making in a situation out in the woods, That being said the ability to cook for oneself a proper meal, is an extremely important set of skills whether in the woods or in general... Fantastic job Dave.
Awesome as always I just made speckled sea trout and hush puppies myself! I would pre order a 10” skillet if it was made available to do so. Just got my scout pack awesome pack You and your team did a wonderful job designing that!!!
Nice The tartar sauce needs finely minced fresh onion, and I always add a small amount of either dijon or spicy brown mustard and a bloop of lemon juice Everything looks good Thanks for the video
If you make a recipe book for all this food you've been making I will buy it! Please keep making the videos though. I digum. You and yours take care Dave. Hope to meet you at an outing one of these days. God bless you and yours.
Never seen sugar or butter put in hush puppy batter, butter in catfish breading or catfish put in an egg and milk wash. definitely different from how we do it down south, but would definitely give it a plate or two full for testing to see how it stacks up to southern style. Also need to add chopped onions and jalapeños to the hush puppy batter! But it looks good!!
Dogs also love hushpuppies. Maybe that's where they got their name. We had one dog who would sit on her haunches looking up at the plate of hushpuppies on the table.
Catfish my all-time favorite fish of all fish of the world then my next all-time favorite is shark and you can't always get that in the mountains so back again with catfish. Very fitting meal for catfish
I was a bit surprised to not see cast iron. I always use sweet relish in tarter…but now I’m thinkin I’m gonna take a crack as your recipe!! I never put the tarter right to the fish…I get a little on my fork and then a piece of fish. That way, the tarter doesn’t overwhelm the fish. We have horned pout up here in New England. I gotta do this solo though cause the wife won’t touch bleached flour or corn meal unless it’s organic. Mayo she makes herself to cut the sugar. But my mouth was watering just watching that meal!!
I like your carefully calibrated measurement of ingredients. I LOVE hush puppies, but how can you not love fried cornmeal? I am really glad to see I am not the only one to sling flour all over creation. Thanks for another great cooking vid!
Man. Just tried the hushpuppies. And I have to say ,they're tge best I ever ate. Ill try the fish breading next. I had some uncle bucks we needed to use this time lol
David you’re killing me!! There are not bowlines, ferro rods or poison ivy in these videos. However, the weight gain from just watching this should make you liable for those damages…Camp kitchen my butt!!! You done gone all Julia child on me bruh…don’t you have a trap line to check or shelter you need to build? *just kidding……
I guess if survival classes were to ever take a downward turn you could do cooking classes bet lot of guys send their gals up there to learn thse skills.
We have had a running 'discourse ' as to what kind of pickles to put in tartar sauce. Some say sweet relish. I am a firm believer that only dill pickle will do!
Dill is where it’s at
Dave your cooking series has been freaking awesome bud. Thanks so much.

You hit the ball out of the park with the quick bread and apple butter. Wife loves it, also!
When done right catfish is absolutely awesome and fresh puppies can’t be beat . Thank you for sharing sir
Great Vid, as always Dave! With all the elaborate offerings out there, you bring it down real, I do what I want style. Cheers, good sir!

Looked awesome brother. Appreciate the work you put into these Dave. 👌
Fried catfish (using cornmeal) and hush puppies-we just might have to make you an honorary Southerner. 😋😁
Dave, I have a hush puppy recipie that is easy and from what people tell me is the best they have ever had.
1 cup of corn meal
1 cup of self rising flower

DARK BEER OF YOU CHOICE
Butter milk
In a big mixing bowel, combine all dry engrediants, then add 1 cup of buttermilk, and enough of beer to make the consistency to where when you stick a spoon in the mix sticks to the spoon. You and yours take care Dave. Hope to meet you at an outing one of these days. God bless you and yours.
Start eating that you wouldn't want to quit!
Believe it or not my mom has a “Mayberry” cookbook and Aunt Bea’s kerosene pickles work great. 😀
Zahn's seriously missing out! Looks delicious
Never seen sugar or butter put in hush puppy batter, butter in catfish breading or catfish put in an egg and milk wash. definitely different from how we do it down south, but would definitely give it a plate or two full for testing to see how it stacks up to southern style. Different strokes this is actually an Alabama recipe
Wow, that looks delicious! Great video.
That looks good!! I love some jalapenos and onions in my hushpuppies.

Man, you know how to make an Arkansas guy hungry. I'm grilling steaks and frying ice cream onion rings for lunch later. Lol
The taste test makes the whole video.
Great Video Outstanding.

I don’t get it? This was all cooked in cast iron?
I like your carefully calibrated measurement of ingredients. I LOVE hush puppies, but how can you not love fried cornmeal? I am really glad to see I am not the only one to sling flour all over creation. Thanks for another great cooking vid!
Sure is nice to see that someone else knows how to clean a catfish. No silver skin. I would eat from your kitchen any day.
Looks delicious
Very good video I enjoyed it thanks
My seasonings always clump together in my outside kitchen. That's the humidity in eastern NC I guess
Some of mine do as well. Rice helps
Dam…thanks Dave instead of going to work today Now I have to go cat fishing 😂
You reminding me of when I was coming up with this meal, we ate this all the time in the summer. I always have ketchup with catfish.
Great dish, one of my absolute favorites, I like grits with my fish….
2 parts Mayonnaise + 1 part honey + 1 part liquid smoke = best catfish sauce ever.
🤣 Good thing your beard is white! 😂 That looks awesome!
Holy smokes that looks great!
I'm pretty sure someone at sometime has asked about a cook book, but is there one? Completely enjoy the channel! Thanks
I have one on cooking that covers trapping as well but not a dedicated book yet
Dude!!! Love this content
Would like to see you toss in a catch and cook if you ever have the time.

Thanks Dave

Can't believe ol'cat didn't show up for fish dinner.
Thumbs up man.
Man. Just tried the hushpuppies. And I have to say ,they're tge best I ever ate. Ill try the fish breading next. I had some uncle bucks we needed to use this time lol
Life’s good!
hey Dave, hope you're doing well. Wish I was there to eat that with you.
A catfish “catch, clean, and cook” video would be nice to see.
I would have also added a smidgen of "cream of tartar" to my sauce.
Hell yeah I got my grayl cup coming this week.
👊💀
That looks delicious. You need to revisit the sumac lemonade.
Like fresh catfish my uncle use to come in from Ohio after a night of fishing and bring in a lot of cats with him
That looks so delicious and took no time at all! What oil do you use and what do you do with it after you cook?
Here's a homemade tartar sauce recipe: use dill or sweet relish (your choice), mayo and instead of dill juice, use lemon juice.
🐐
When are you going to bring out the GRITS ? Looks amazing !!!!! 🙂
Off topic question: I’ve bugged out but now I need to stay gone for a period longer than my supplies. What should I be doing/thinking about?
David you’re killing me!! There are not bowlines, ferro rods or poison ivy in these videos. However, the weight gain from just watching this should make you liable for those damages…Camp kitchen my butt!!! You done gone all Julia child on me bruh…don’t you have a trap line to check or shelter you need to build? *just kidding……
