I started using Astro in aviation. Started with the little 1124? mini impacting 1/4 ratchet. Now I have snap ring pliers, 40sl light, punches and chisels, My 4980 got stolen sadly and I haven't replaced it yet, a nano 3/8, and a ball joint press I use to press flight control bearings on remove and install. My 2009 Honda CR-V, I flushed the PS, by raising the 2 front tires in my garage. Then I disconnected a hose from PS reservoir and made sure to keep reservoir full. Then I turned the steering wheel lock to lock without the engine running, many times, each time some fluid would come out. I used Honda PS fluid, 6 bottles, 16oz. each. Fluid was clean when done. The PS had a noise, but after flush, noise was gone. Thanks...Jim
I wish more people completed the maintenance schedule. It's interesting what you find when doing one of those. Good one Mr. O. Shout out to Mrs. O. You do a lot in the office!
My local Ford dealer refused to do a Trans oil & filter change when I asked at about 85k miles. Their rational was that per the VIN, no trans oil change was to be done until 100k miles. Likewise they would not do the work at 92k miles either. I am at 99800 now but I'll drive to another dealer 80 miles away for that work.
Eric, great video as always, we live in the U.K. and some things don't change, like the school run, they paint "Zigzags" on the road outside the schools, you cant stop on the "Zigzags" if you do you get a ticket. A very controversial subject the length and breath of the country. Hey when I went to school we had to go on our bikes. As you said nothing is forever.
Agree about the video that's why my friends and I are voting twice. Mail in and in-person; per the commander in chief. By the way really cool video Mr. O.
This video is a very powerful argument for doing routine maintenance, and the extra value of having SMA perform that maintenance! One can tell that the owner has kept up the care on this vehicle, which makes it more valuable than just ignoring things until something freezes up or falls off!
ive found that a lot of people dont even know they have them. and then when a shop recommends it, they're just trying to scam you. I remember there was a rats nest in a guys filter and built up around the sides of the box and I cleaned it out and told him id sell him a new filter for 20 dollars already 10 dollars off of the normal price because of how bad it was and he didnt want to do it so I said id give it to him at our cost at 10$ and he still didnt want to. At first I thought it was maybe because he legit couldn't afford it but when he paid for the oil change he had a stack of cash.
Them cabin filters are stupid anyway, take it out and throw it away, replace with something just to keep the fan clean, maybe piece of cheap house furnace filter. Much better air flow.
Thank you for making that fact about MT fluids more widely known. Most people, even a lot of mechanics, do not realize this! I bought a Ford Ranger off a mechanic a while back, it had been his work truck for 21 years and not a single fluid in it was correct, right down to the gear oil I drained out of the transmission where MERC IV should have been. I was putting a lot of miles on it at the time so I drained and filled, put 1500 mile on it, drained and filled again, another 1500, then ended up running Royal Purple Synchromax. Fortunately, no lasting damage and after the 2nd drain and fill and getting all of the gear oil and grit out, the transmission no longer whined (screamed when I bought it, actually) and shifted smoothly. Sadly, I was nearing the end of my list of repairs when a truck pulled ouf 50ft in front of me across 2 lanes of traffic and came to a dead stop. RIP Ranger.
Even if the MT does take a 75w-90 or 75w-140 or straight grade gear oil, wayyyyyy too many people put GL-5 in the thing. It must be GL-4. GL-5 is for differentials and it has a lot of sulfur EP additives which corrode brass. Synchros are brass. GL-4 has much less of those compounds and it does not attack the brass synchros. The synchros are what fail and lead to an MT's replacement because it starts grinding and failing to shift unless rev matched. People do more harm than good when they don't RTFM. Too much pride in some people's minds to do that though.
@@mannys9130 Yup, I've seen this too. I've also seen (and been paid well to fix) what happens when adding DOT5 to a DOT3 brake system. People, higher number does not mean better!
What I did when I did the gear oil on my lawn tractor was put as much in as cane out fast, then stick the container upside down on an empty oil jug, then start the next container, then switch it and cap the one I take off the oil jug, then when I have it mostly full, I put the stuff in the oil jug in all at once
I use the old school trick on plugs, a piece of vacuum line on the plug wire side, twist by hand to make sure there is no cross threading on my Chevy Thunder, then torque to specs! Geez Louise, when was its last oil change? That brake pressure bleeder is a handy tool, I have a vacuum bleeder. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Seeing you fill the washer fluid absolutely to the top reminded me... My mom barely drives anymore, maybe 1500 miles a year, so I do annual oil changes on her car. At the time, it was 2005 Mazda3. I changed the oil in the winter and topped off the washer fluid like that. One summer day, I was visiting her and we took her car somewhere. It was quite hot out, so we had the ac on and I'm sure it wad lava hot under the hood. When we got home, I noticed fluid leaking under the car. So, I popped the hood to have a look at washer fluid was percolating out of the little vent hole in the washer bottle cap. I guess filling it all the way up in the winter and having it expand in the summer made it leak out the top. So, I don't fill it 100% to the top anymore.
Wish you were my wrench jockey! I’m a licensed heavy duty mechanic and wouldn’t hesitate to bring my vehicle in for service so l wouldn’t have to bend into a pretzel. Love your program! 🇨🇦
down south I have started cleaning the condensers as part of extended services ...drops pressures extending comp life and gives a temp drop at the vents
I buy the AC cleaner in a can for home systems. It foams really well and gets all the gunk out. Just did my frontier's condenser and trans cooler. So much junk and dirt came pouring out. Make sure to give it a good rinse with water.
@@CRAPO2011 use a metal safe condenser cleaner to flood the radiator and condenser fins until it foams out both sides, let sit 10 minutes then reverse flush out the cleaner very thoroughly then blow out with a leaf blower until dry. recommend replacement if water flow reduction is noticed.
That master cylinder cap reminded me of my power steering dipstick on my 06 Ram mega cab... Total pita to align JUST right... I now have a 2013 Quadcab 4WD... wish you were local to me... You'd be my go to mechanic. Thank you for all your videos sir.
We owned two Mazda 6s until last year, a 2009 and 2010, 4 and V6, both auto trans, and getting the right trans fluid is a tad harder than one might hope for - the trans uses Mazda fluid, but the part number is very close to a Ford sourced fluid, and if you mix it up, you get some crappy shifting (I didn't mix it up, the shop did). Ford and Mazda both issued TSBs reference the fluid mix up for Escapes/Tributes, Mazda 6/Fusion, etc. I ordered the correct fluid and doing three drain and fills with the correct Mazda fluid fixed it for me, fortunately, without grenading the trans. All part of the joy of the Ford/Mazda partnership that is thankfully over.
thankfully it's not as prevalent now, but the 80s/90s/00s were hell for chrysler autos, because people would CONSTANTLY put the wrong fluid in. read the damn owner's manual! ATF+4 was spec'ed for a long time, and people and shops would put in ATF+3 or god forbid dextron/mercon fluid. that'll smoke your go in a hurry.
You're a natural; at all of these things you do. In many ways, you remind me of my step-father who was a mechanics, mechanic - and a good people person too. Thanks for all of it, my friend!
Free tip, when taking out cabin filter cut a thin piece of cardboard from a cereal box that is that same size as the filter(use your new one as a template) slide it under the old filter before removing the filter from the vehicle. This way if there is debris sitting on top it won't fall in the blower. Says the hassle of removing the blower, especially ones that aren't simple to remove.
Man you are thorough! This is the sort of work I want from my trusted mechanic: just fix whatever little things you find and talk to me for the expensive repairs. I am so glad that you replace the drive belt. Would it be good to check the timing belt too (I am not sure if it has timing belt or chain)?
They’ve got timing chains, fords stopped using timing belts like back in the late 90s, we’ve got several customers at my shop that are super comfortable just telling us to go through the car and repair as needed and then just call them for anything major, definitely have to earn that trust over the years though.
I remember my grandfather buying a 1950 Chevy at a farm auction in the late 1960s. He claimed it was so easy on gas that he had to drain some out every 100 miles.
Most of the houses are a hundred years old, and yes, trees grow like weeds in this part of the country. They grow in your gutters, in your flower beds, through your driveway, you name it. I put down heavy plastic with rocks around my house and there are maple saplings all through the rocks, There’s no dirt, just some sand and a few rotting leaves, but the stupid trees do not care. The sun comes out from the rain clouds about once a week here in the northern reaches of Appalachia.
G'day Eric it was good to see how you do a complete service and all I can say is I wish you could do mine. I have a 2017 Mazda 6 Atenza estate and when it goes in for a service you hope that the full service is what you have just done, great job Eric he is a lucky costumer having you working on his vehicle. Regards John
I have a 2017 Mazda 3 with the 2.0 Skyactiv engine. And I freakin' love how Mazda made servicing such a breeze. Everything that needs to be changed regularly is easily accessible. German manufacturers could really learn a thing or two from Mazda's engineering.
I'm just surprised all the bleeders still opened. Keep up the great work! Love and best wishes from another mechanic in the deep south, AKA Pennsylvania.
My 09 got the subframe recall. Mine actually failed on the road exactly how the recall said it would. Took Mazda 6 months to get the new subframe to me.
@@codyjacobsen6954 They claimed "insufficient paint" was the root cause. No amount of paint could protect the poor quality steel they used for that. Light surface rust on all nearby steel parts--subframe rusted completely through. Crumbled in your hand. I was very fortunate that mine snapped in a low-speed braking situation, rather than at a high speed. Otherwise, the car has been great! (no joke).
I just did the same, all fluids replaced in my recent daily driver on top of getting all of the 'other' issues sorted. While I already know better, I neglected to check the spare tire pressure to date. Then I am watching Eric check that Mazda spare and I think to myself "yeah I need to get to that too" then I say no, I need to get off my stump this very second and check the darn thing right now or it will be forgotten. I find the unused 14 year old factory original with only 7psi in it. All the good a spare does when it is flat too. This should be the very first thing I check when getting another beater, not months or years later or potentially succumb to a double whammy when getting a real flat tire. Thanks Eric, I needed that nudge :)
If I owned a Mazda in the rust belt, I’d douse it in Fluid Film or Krown every few years. See so many of them here in Ontario that are really bad for rust. And they are not that old.
mine is spotless zero rust wonderful body shape,,, But my engine blew at 68,000 on july 13th.. not even a warning that my oil was low and I check every week... Went to check my oil very little... Went to put oil in ,,,,the cover oil looked like jello ... So I did a full oil change.. Couple days later Super extreme rod knock. So I parked it in a safe parking lot, i usally sleep in, during the night,, A 24 hour Walgreens.. and walked about 5 miles in 115° heat to get a rental car... This was July 13 th . Order a motor, With low miles 20,400 miles, paid 1,045 ..They told me 7 to 14 days until I get it.. I actually got it two days ago ,, but shipped to the mechanic I wanted to do it.. He won’t be able to do it until next week because he’s all backed up ,,, most places are backed up because of COVID-19 and are super busy... So I’ve had the rental car this whole time it’s about a month worth of rentals....Still cheaper than getting a hotel room,, Which would be 70 + a night .. Yes I live out of my car , was doing quite well actually, would’ve been better if it happened when it was cooler out... I would just sleep in my car no ac needed... Put it this way right now it’s 1 11:47 pm It’s still 104 outside...So yeah you need to run the car a little bit I tend to turn it on for 20 minutes a pop... Every hour or so...
I totally agree. I live in central NY and had my subframe rust out on my 06 Mazda 6. Decided to keep it as my project vehicle and I swapped the subframe with a used one. A neighbor of mine had their sub frame rot out on their Mazda 6 too. Theirs might have been a 2011 but I told him of a pending law suit with these frames improperly treated at the factory. Eventually his was covered in the suit and Mazda replaced his sub frame for free. I now fluid film my vehicles every year.
i just did fuel injectors on my truck yesterday and it wasn't to bad. the only thing is the ford 3.0 v6 intake has to pulled apart just to get to the injectors and if you have one that quit it's best to change them all.
Back in the ‘80’s, I was watching a car repair program on TV and they recommended flushing the power steering fluid at certain mileage intervals. My 1982 Ford Escort had about 60,000 on it and I decided this is something I could do. I flushed the fluid, which was a somewhat messy project and felt good that I had done the job myself. It wasn’t long before I started noticing puddles under the car - you guessed it, power steering fluid. I added fluid and the leak got worse. I took the car to my trusted mechanic and he informed me that the seals were leaking in my power steering rack. He would need to install a rebuilt rack, at considerable expense. I told him that I just flushed the fluid, and he speculated that the new fluid cleaned the debris around the seals and caused them to leak. He recommended not flushed the fluid but instead just removing the fluid in the reservoir and replacing it with new fluid. Doing this every so often will gradually refresh the fluid without causing seals to leak. Thereafter, I didn’t do ANYTHING to my transmission fluid except make sure it was filled. Live and learn.
Just coincidence. I doubt your fluid change caused the seals to leak. 60k mile power steering fluid would not be severely junked up and plugging seal gaps. Change your ATF at 30-50k miles for maximum trans life. If you just ignore fluids out of fear of causing a leak, you'll destroy the part from lack of adequate lubrication. This is like someone saying "I changed my air filter and then got a check engine light for the MAF sensor, so now I don't change my air filter at all." That's just not conducive to longevity, you know? Causation and correlation.
Eric o. I enjoy the videos. The school I went to, where I parked my car, they built a r o t c building. That does not phase me at the least. If the kids didn't need it, the board wouldn't have passed it. That's just my thoughts on things. If people would look around and see all the changes around the world they would have a million strokes a day every day. Thanks for the incredible videos. Hope your family is doing well.
Yes I found out the hard way with a ZF manual transmission in a Ford super duty, You must use the synthetic oil called for if you want the shifting smooth 🤓 Also on a Honda civic 1.7l 2001 thru 2005 it has a Coolant drain plug above the oil filter to drain the engine block down to almost dry for those who own them 19mm socket takes it out also don't loose the aluminum sealing washer on that plug , but first drain the radiator of course make it's fully cooled down first. Agree about the video that's why my friends and I are voting twice. Mail in and in-person; per the commander in chief. By the way really cool video Mr. O.
Thanks Eric. We appreciate the work you do in putting together these videos.
Eric's videos are very helpful in many ways. His videos even help me out on my last brake job. Eric makes his videos fun to watch.

This video is a very powerful argument for doing routine maintenance, and the extra value of having SMA perform that maintenance! One can tell that the owner has kept up the care on this vehicle, which makes it more valuable than just ignoring things until something freezes up or falls off!
Gotta say....Lots of quality stuff done. Good job Mr O
Nice to see someone doing a full and proper job, would definitely have you service my Mazda 6 2018, if I actually lived in America
meanwhile people are driving around wearing masks in their cars, while the cabin filter looks like that!
ive found that a lot of people dont even know they have them. and then when a shop recommends it, they're just trying to scam you.

I love that you check the spare tire air pressure, Kudos 👍👍👍

Well, I'll be jiggered, there's a classic reach through! Gotta add that to the list. Thanks Dr. O!
I agree about the anti seeze , it also has a dielectric effect and the silver stuff can promote electrolysis
i start my new job as a mechanic next week at a local garage. you are a inspiration for sure!
A piece of vacumn hose on the end of the plug works great to start the plug in tight spaces.
What I did when I did the gear oil on my lawn tractor was put as much in as cane out fast, then stick the container upside down on an empty oil jug, then start the next container, then switch it and cap the one I take off the oil jug, then when I have it mostly full, I put the stuff in the oil jug in all at once
great video! my favorite videos are the ones when you say "enhance" or "what do you want me to do lady, chop it off?"
Thanks for posting, Eric. I have a similarly-aged Mazda3 so this was very informative.
Greetings from Australia, Love all your videos, i watch them all the time , keep up the good work

down south I have started cleaning the condensers as part of extended services ...drops pressures extending comp life and gives a temp drop at the vents
Eric car guy did a vid on that ,whats your process in cleaning the condensor if i may?
I buy the AC cleaner in a can for home systems. It foams really well and gets all the gunk out. Just did my frontier's condenser and trans cooler. So much junk and dirt came pouring out. Make sure to give it a good rinse with water.

Finally a customer who actually takes care of their car
I don't think waiting 100,000 miles to change your filters is "taking care of their car", fella. Just saying.
For once something came into Eric’s shop that wasn’t broken. Lol. Awesome vid.

I was more interested in the old 2 door blazer than the Ford ranger lol. I enjoy the content.
I remember my grandfather buying a 1950 Chevy at a farm auction in the late 1960s. He claimed it was so easy on gas that he had to drain some out every 100 miles.
Eric, great video on 100,000 mile maintenance. You show us how to do a thorough good job. Thanks !!
Tell that guy in that house near the school they still sell paint!
Dean Lang 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I thought the same thing.
I notice that most of the houses are made from wood.
I presume that's because it's plentiful locally?
Most of the houses are a hundred years old, and yes, trees grow like weeds in this part of the country. They grow in your gutters, in your flower beds, through your driveway, you name it. I put down heavy plastic with rocks around my house and there are maple saplings all through the rocks, There’s no dirt, just some sand and a few rotting leaves, but the stupid trees do not care. The sun comes out from the rain clouds about once a week here in the northern reaches of Appalachia.

Check his recalls. He may be up for new free control arms and subframe. Did a ton of those in NY when I was a Mazda tech.
Most likely has the subframe recall. The control arms are only cx7, cx9 and rx8
I got thinking that after. Kias have the control arm recall which I work on now.
My 09 got the subframe recall. Mine actually failed on the road exactly how the recall said it would. Took Mazda 6 months to get the new subframe to me.
All because poor design of the AC drain. Gotta love the Ford days of Mazda

Nice work checking the spare for proper air pressure.

i just did fuel injectors on my truck yesterday and it wasn't to bad. the only thing is the ford 3.0 v6 intake has to pulled apart just to get to the injectors and if you have one that quit it's best to change them all.

Grease your nippels so they don't get crusty, best advice I've heard in a while!
Folks, do not ignore your fluid changes regardless of what you see on UA-cam.

Was listening that you did the oil change while engine idling as well :D
Yes I found out the hard way with a ZF manual transmission in a Ford super duty, You must use the synthetic oil called for if you want the shifting smooth 🤓 Also on a Honda civic 1.7l 2001 thru 2005 it has a Coolant drain plug above the oil filter to drain the engine block down to almost dry for those who own them 19mm socket takes it out also don't loose the aluminum sealing washer on that plug , but first drain the radiator of course make it's fully cooled down first. GREAT CONTENT ERIC❗👍
