One thing I can't find anywhere that is extremely frustrating: what sort of estimate could one make of the upfront cost of converting to electric heat?
Doesn't matter what the savings are if you can't afford to put it in in the first place.

I want to keep my oil baseboard heating boiler furnace - and add an electric boiler furnace into the system - so electric is my primary and the oil is my backup - I have 42 solar panels in the North East USA so I have plenty of additional electric that is free to us - any one have anybody who is doing this??????

I have a gas furnace that is 3 years old. What I would like to know is can I convert this furnace to electric. I have solar so I am not worried about the cost of electricity.

No way a solar pv system will produce enough electricity to run electric resistance heat. it won't even produce 1/5th.
Best option, keep the furnace, add an air source heatpump to the system, the furnace kicks in when heatpump can't keep up.
