An element of this scene that people overlook is not only the meaning of the monologues content, it the fact that for the first time in a while, somebody was speaking to Alice using deep and beautiful language she always adored instead of talking to her like a child so that she could understand. Stewart expresses language in its raw form, not simplified and not as if Alice is too far gone to understand or appreciate it. And it reaches Alice deeper than anything that has been said to her in some time.

The way Kristen says "cause nothing is lost forever" kills me because we know it has a double meaning and she's thinking of the love between her and her mother when she says it. Her expression was perfect.

This was the most heart wrenching scene of the movie. I remember sitting in the theater during this scene, and there was pure silence after. Julianne was so compelling in this role. You can just feel Alice drifting away, but what keeps her moving is love. Love is ultimately all she has left to remember and feel.

It reminded me of an old woman that was at the retirement home I worked at. She had her husband, who took care of her with endless patience and love and I remember how she would always be smiling. She could hardly speak at all when the time came for her to go to heaven....

A few years back, I had failed out of nursing school and I made a decision to become a psychology major. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life besides becoming a nurse. I took a class called Dementia Awareness and Best Practices for Care because I needed to pick an elective. We watched this movie in class and it brought tears to my eyes. This movie and the class as a whole inspired me to work in dementia care. Five years later, I’m a college graduate and I got a job in a nursing home as a recreational therapist for memory impaired residents. I love what I do and I’m happier now than I ever was in nursing school ☺️

“I dreamed we were there. The plane left the tropopause, the safe air, and attained the outer rim, the ozone, which was ragged and torn, patches of it thread-bare as old cheesecloth, and that was frightening…
But I saw something only I could see, because of my astonishing ability to see such things:
Souls were rising, from the earth far below, souls of the dead, of people who had perished, from famine, from war, from the plague, and they floated up, like skydivers in reverse, limbs all akimbo, wheeling and spinning. And the souls of these departed joined hands, clasped ankles and formed a web, a great net of souls, and the souls were three-atom oxygen molecules, of the stuff of ozone, and the outer rim absorbed them, and was repaired.
Nothing’s lost forever. In this world, there is a kind of painful progress. Longing for what we’ve left behind, and dreaming ahead.
At least I think that’s so.”
    -Tony Kushner

That was one of the saddest elements to the movie, to see her suffering from the realization that she will no longer live how she did in her past life, where all of her accomplishments, and goals she acheived and worked hard for, will lead her to Alzheimer's. No movie scene has ever had me in tears the way this one did- "Nothing's lost forever". This is the ultimate scope of the Mortal journey of a soul: The ego and the memories can be lost, but the impressions left while on our journey through this earth are carved forever in an unreachable place that can't be touched by any illness - We can forget what we saw, but we will never forget what we felt.

I don't care what anyone says, in my opinion, I believe that there was no other way that this ending could have been any better than it already is. This scene gives me chills as well as many tears. One of the most emotional scenes I have ever witnessed in a movie. This scene just gives me so much to hold onto. I love it so much. Both actresses are both beautiful inside and outside for portraying such incredible roles into a bond of stronger love that continues to grow throughout the movie into the best relationship in the movie. It is so incredibly heartbreaking while simultaneously heartwarming. Just seeing how they act, and look into each others eyes, already showing the powerful love that they have for each other, and then to hear this woman with Alzheimer's still have so much intelligence after continuing with the disease just lets you know that she is "Still Alice." And that last quote just gets me so much. "It was about love." And the way that it synchronizes with the beautifully sad music, and the flashback to the mother and daughter on the beach walking away, as if knowing the movie will end, as well as her death may be approaching, but their love for each other will forever continue to live on no matter what. 💔💕❤💜😢😢👩👧

When my grandfather died, I didn't shed a tear. You see, I wasn't close to him, although I wish I were. Then I watched this movie with my best friend - we have this thing of not crying, of concealing our feelings, almost like a game - and I couldn't stop crying. It's too powerful, too realistic.
I had to lie to my mother, I said that the movie was awful when she asked me about it, but only because I don't want her to feel sad. She would - she was the only one who cried during his funeral, even though she saw the shell of his former self everyday. She would be crushed.

I support you Davi Galino, the film is really very powerful, do not have to not cry, who passed for sad moments like this knows that impossible not to be moved , is real of all, is life in our lives.

It has been a while sice I watcher a movie as powerful as Still Alice, the final scene has really gotten to me, it might have been Alice joining her sister in the afterlife or perhaps she and her mom as a symbol of mother-daughter love...It's funny how in the beginning of the movie, Alice and her daughter were written to be some sort of antipodes, in the way they perceived life and futur, and it was such an emotionnal expérience to witness their bond getting stonger during the movie and watching their love towards each other till the end.

Kristen's performance here is STAGGERING. It's someone reciting text that means the world to them, and trying with all their ability to make the person they're reading believe in it too (or at least acknowledge it).
It's an example of what I find so moving about performance. The commitment to making a stranger feel what the actor feels. In this case, it's a daughter trying to reach the emotional core of her mother through art that touches her own.
Monumental ending to this movie. Both of those women are amazing here.

Staggeringly BAD - She's a god-awful actress. When I saw this with friends we cringed. She is acting with a heavyweight and is so self-conscious and not "IN THE MOMENT" it's painful to watch. Why they didn't give this to the other sister is beyond me.

I"m not a fan or not NOT a fan of Kristin Stewart. But, this movie. Especially this scene. Kristin delivers . I saw this movie in 2014-2015. When it came out. I remember this scene to this day. I mean Julienne, of course. But, the question here is Kristin. And, Kristin delivered this scene so wonderfully that I have remembered the emotional impact of this final scene for the past 6 years. Just watching this 3 minutes brings me to tears. There is no question Kristin Stewart is a good actress. She is a great actress. This alone shows what she can do. It awakened me to her potential. This was a touching scene and movie in which there were two standout performances. Obviously Julienne. But Kristin's performance IMO was stellar and made me see her in a new way. This scene is one of, if not her best acting and the emotional impact of this final scene would have been lost if she wasn't able to adequately convey the message of love to her mom. It is divine.

A troubled mind that has lost almost all memory and ability to interpret, yet it could never forget the feeling of love. Alice is not commenting on the monologue here, she's describing her daughter caring about her, taking her seriously and reading her long, difficult speeches as she was used to. She's describing what she's seeing; the loving face of her daughter, being passionate about what she loves. A mother's mind never stops revolving around her children. And she's taken over by love. Magnificent performances of Moore and Stewart.

Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease, unfortunately no 'cure' will be able to bring back neurones and thus memories lost. We can only hope it prevents further loss and stopping the disease progressing but reversing it I'm afraid is near impossible.

This scene was interesting, in another scene she confuses Lydia for her Sister, the way that she knew the passage was about Love reflected the way Alice kept on her most treasured memories particularly those of her Sister's whom she likely had a very close relationship with and Lydia reminded her of it.

    • @zoelin7386
      @zoelin7386 9 років тому +24

+Samuel Benitez The passage wasn't about love, not exactly. It was about letting go, and understand that nothing is lost forever, though knowing that you have to go through the painful progress of missing what you have lost, despite needing to dream ahead. Alice replied love because she wasnt in a coherent state, but was very right, because Lydia was reading that passage to her to tell her she can let go and nothing is lost forever because she loves her thus the passage was about lydia's love for her mother.

Believe it or not the scene that really got to me was the casual one right before this, when the father and daughter are talking about her right in front of her like she's not there and her hair was all disheveled. This beautiful, strong, amazing woman was reduced to how we treat little children, and her family was doing everything in their power short of completely abandoning her to avoid confronting and watching this pain.

The way Alice looked at Lydia is the way my mom (who is now in a home, with late stage EOAD at 65) looks at my brother when he gets near her.
She may no long talk or respond or recognise me nor my dad, but that soft, now dull, twinkle in her eyes when she recognises my brother is so heartwarming.
And it's so well captured in this scene. Wonderful acting from the both of them. Absolutely heart breaking

I haven't seen the movie, I know what happens, but I think this ending is meaningful. Kristen's character read something beautiful and when she asked her mother about its meaning, the mother said love. And that last shot isn't meant to be reflecting on a time that use to be, but how things can *still* be, in spite of the challenges. Alice can still feel love, she can still love and her family can cherish the time they have left together. Even if her mind is going away, that doesn't mean the good times have to come to an end
