Out of the names you listed I would say Martin Luther King Jr was still a good man. Malcolm X was the real bad one.

THANK YOU for not criticising them based on today's standards. Too many people do that nowadays unfortunately
Thank you for recognizing that! It took a lot of work to be able to make this video without falling into that trap.
Yes, this was very well made
I took history this year I had to a big part of our essay was historical perspective. To understand history you need to understand what people thought at that time. This is why it's unfair to judge people by today's standards times have changed.
Eh true morality is timeless so they shouldn't be judged by time just by what is right or wrong regardless.
Churchill hated Indians
Paul McCartney wrote a bunch of songs about how terrible a dad John Lennon was, most notably “Hey Jude”
He also wrote it to torture anyone with the name Jude for generations to come. Anyone named jude knows what I mean.....
Another song, "Getting Better", literally says "I used to be cruel to my woman, I'd beat her and get her apart from the things that she loved" referencing how John Lennon treated his first wife
John wrote that part not Paul
If he was a terrible dad with his son Julian from his first marriage to Cynthia, one can say he compensated for it by being a so called "househusband" for 5 years with his son Sean with Yoko Ono.

Moral of the story: No man or idea should be put on a pedestal.
All of these "great people" were human beings. All human beings are flawed. There is no reason why we shouldn't believe they had bad sides to their personalities. What they all had in common was that they yielded power on people, and power corrupts any human being.
Genuine question, what about religious figures like Buddha, Jesus or Allah or something?
@@kyler7897 Especially them, they are the end product of idolizing people long enough and the very reason why I oppose it. Sanctifying anything has always been a recipe for disaster, just imagine how much people have died because of them. Them, which existence you cannot even reliably prove anymore.
@kyler7897 People tend to look up to their favorite fictional characters, there's nothing surprising about them.
There are no people who did nothing wrong and I personally don't see a problem with admiring other for what they did great despite of their flaws. And about ideas: why not put on a pedestal? I mean in this video we judge others base on some ideas (not to cheat your wife, not divide people as better or worse etc)
The first thing my social studies teacher taught us on our first day of middle school was "before you learn anything here, just remember, there is no such thing as a 'good guy' in history, everyone has skeletons in their closets"
EDIT: after receiving a bunch of replies, I'd like to add that since it's a public school teachers are asked to refrain from talking about religion and politics in a way that might influence students, so he wasn't talking about any religious figures
That may be true, but even dumber than the people who idolize them are the ones who see a video like this and now suddenly think they have some inside scoop that they were actually some terrible people and there's no chance they were good people and that people who think they're good people just don't know the criticisms. You can't just know or understand people after hearing a few anecdotes or quotes being taken out of context, that's ridiculous.

It's absolutely hilarious how H.P Lovecraft, arguably the most influential 20th century author, was an outward racist for most of his life. Indian here. There's a lot of bad things that can be said about Gandhi. His non-violence, "ahimsa" wasn't even that effective when looking at the Indian cause. Clement Attlee, the sucessor to Churchill who granted India independence himself stated that Gandhi was "ineffective". Turns out Gandhi's "Quit India" movement wasn't even the main reason why the British left India, it was the Japanese collaborationist army formed under Subhas Chandra Bose. Bose had apparently died in 1945 but his soldiers hadn't, and their trial led to the Royal Indian Naval Mutiny- which shook British India quite badly. Attlee stated in an interview that the RIN Mutiny and Bose were actually the main reason they granted India independence lmfao. Gandhi's non-violence was incredibly ineffective when looking at peoples oppressed for years under the yoke of colonialism. What actually made him think that his non violence would free India from years of occupation? The Indian national identity itself was hard to forge, as India consisted of numerous peoples, religions and cultures. Obtaining freedom would have been even harder.
Besides that, I'm glad you brought the whole Gandhi being a weird pervert part, as it is something many Indians go over, and that incredibly annoys me. I myself do not like Gandhi due to his ineffectiveness when fighting British imperialism- when small revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh did better, or Bose who managed to create an entire army- and the whole "celibacy" part.
I sincerely hope that the Indian people will soon realise that Gandhi is not the great man many know and love, he is no "Mahatma". Thank you for exposing the truth!
This is actually very interesting for me. I've been seeing countless Indians support Bose over Gandhi and it certainly looks like Bose is becoming progressively known as the true national hero of India. Another interesting note is that this man is the only head of an axis collaborationist government to be seen in a positive light.
@@outerspace7391 to me, its completely understandable if people dislike Bose for his sudden change in ideology after escaping India. The thing that makes him different from Gandhi is that he was much more willing to achieve independence at all costs or die trying, so yeah lol. He's a very interesting man in terms of ideology. Whether hes a classical Marxist or a National Bolshevik, we will never truly know. He did want a "synthesis of communism and fascism" though, so theres that
I think people mainly latched on to Ghandi for the timing of his pacifist agenda, it might not have helped India achieve freedom in practical terms but I bet it helped endering a lot of people to the Indian cause to hear stories of a man fighting with peace when the world was in such horrible wars, and there is at least something to be appreciated about his dedication to not recur to violence on a human level even if it didn't get results and unfairly overshadowed other important figures of Indian liberation, in some ways he seemed like a beacon of hope at least at the time.
Yes, this reminds me; Martin Luther King was lifted up by the elites, he was given help and a platform, but they did not help Malcolm X, his message was not liked by the elites, even though he resonated with many, many african-americans, perhaps even more than MLK. But today most remember MLK and his message, even conservatives. Malcom X is more on the fringe.
It makes you think about what narratives we are supposed to belive, and what narratives are suppressed. It is clear to me that certain narratives are useful to the rulers, others are not. The truth is not important, peoples perception and beliefs are much more important, to the rulers of a society. Having Ghandi as a hero and a saint may be useful.
So he simply got all the Credit for all other revolutionaries actions? Damn this feels like a great insult to all other people who actually tried to fight.

I don't blame him for say that he wanted to keep the UK white, look at the chaos that the UK is nowadays.
Surprised you didn't mention that Dr. Seuss also deeply disliked children and did NOT want to write children's books or make childlike art. He has a plethora of dark, depressing, perplexing, adult art that was quite good. Because of his art style, it was recommended to him to turn those funny looking creatures he makes into characters in children's books. He begrudgingly did so, and unexpectedly took off.

Guess the bar is just that low when you're fighting ņ@ž1$.
He was definitely a great man.
Remember, the most popular good guy in history was homeless, sorrowful, judged at trail even though he was completely innocent. He then was imprisoned, beaten and tortured, and finally crucified. That's a fate most "good" people will go through or worse. Think about that.
Talking about Our Lord Jesus Christ, let's never forget what he's done for all of us from the beginning until the end my friend
Yeah, like saying to disregard your family if it meant following him
Jesus was a failed apocalyptic prophet (among many of his time). He was made in something different after his crucifixion. Don’t get me wrong, he seems like a good guy and I like his progressive views on some things (women, forgiveness, helping the poor), but he never considered himself divine.
Oh he truly went for everyone.
Hot take, but I think the traits required to be hyper successful and achieve great things are generally the opposite of the traits required to be a good person and treat the people around you well.
I dunno, I think disregarding the moral stuff can definetly be a shortcut to success but it's not required.
So what your saying is, I should start parking in handicap spots?
"Winning over your ambitions by being good is basically a bet on many people's gratitude... not a safe one to put it lightly. To achieve greatness, one secures their bets."
Honestly, I think the same can be said about any industry. Look at all the “greats” and the “best” of their respective industry and they had a couple loose screws atleast in our POV. Like someone said above. I honestly dont know or think it’s necessary but its definitely a notable pattern that cant be brushed aside.
I think to be the “best” or to have such high regard you have to throw away respect either for yourself and or others. Thats why there are many cases where critics say “said person couldve been so much more if they took that role or went along with that thing” and thats what got them out of the industry. But in reality that said person kept their self respect and dignity and decided to leave al together to keep that. we dont even see or even think about those follow up stories until after the fact. Just my two cents
@@OyJaPinoyIf it gives you any advantage that leads you closer to success then go ahead 😂
If I ever became famous, I do not wanna be only remembered for the good things I did, I also want people to see my flaws. And I do admit myself that I have some flaws. Here are the following:
I can be extremely hot-headed and impatient, I frequently break stuff that frustrates me, I'm overly sensitive, I have selective mutism, I cannot greet/say thanks properly, I always act in "skip dialogue" mode when in small talk, I'm a bad listener, I rarely focus on tasks, I procrastinate too often, I daydream too much, the more I get told what to do the less likely I am to do it, and I have a humiliating taste in women.

Some of these negatives make the individual “subhuman”
@notproductiveproductions3504 I wouldnt use that word, it is what lead to genocides. Humans are humans.
tbf a lot of these flaws don't really impact the history in significant ways, like for example the fact that he was a deadbeat doesn't really impact science and history at a grand scale
@@arkdoesstuff7362 I think its important for people to get as much a accurate description of history as possible. It keeps them well rounded as a individual. Looking up to historic figures as intelligent saints is not healthy and makes me think of how north koreans worship their past rulers. Waoh great work you will definitely be super successful
People sadly dont differentiate enough between 'doing good deeds' and 'being a good person'. Good people can do horrible things and horrible people can achieve great accomplishments. Neither our world, nor humans, are as simple as we wish them to be.
the problem is that people idolize the achivments more then the actions of the person....for example if i'm an athlete and i do awful things nobody gonna critizes me... but if you are an awful athlete and do good things they'll treat you like trash
I don't think someone can be a good person without doing good deeds. Someone can say all the good and nice things, but if they don't act accordingly, then they are just a hypocritical fooll
There are no good and bad people. We balance and tip our scales, and we can be directed towards a side, but good and bad deeds are done by all people.
@@smalachit1571i think what he meant is that good people can sometimes make mistakes, doing bad decisions, etc, which we all do, we hurt others sometimes, even without intention

You've done your research very well, but old Winnie Churchill had devised a disasterous campaign in 1915 for Gallipoli. He was First Lord of Admiralty so they allowed him to go through with his planned invasion. This operation cost the lives of over 40k men and nothing was gained. Consequently he was relieved of his duties forthwith from the Admiralty. It's funny no one remembers this little bit of history, but it speaks volumes about his personality elitist attitude.
My grandpa who was originally from Cuba grew up in the full swing years of the Beatles, and said that his least favorite Beatle was John, whom he said was a compete asshole to the other band members. Especially towards George over creative differences.
