might be because people have been able to make jokes about Hitler, Stalin & Mao. Whenever Pol Pot is brought up in a “meme” it’s not because he looks funny or has a distinct feature that people know him for (e.g. Stalin & Hitler’s staches or Mao’s mole), but it’s because of the amount of people he killed. Does that make any sense? Croissant btw

PS: Cambodian-American here, thank you for making this video and bringing light onto the Rouge, I thought I’d add some extra details into your video.
1: Pol Pots’ regime was so severe that his name is almost quite literally banned as a taboo.
2: Because the majority of our culture has been purged during those 4 years, things such as food is very heavily influenced from our thai & vietnamese neighbors as a result. This purge was also so severe that only 22 pieces of music ever survived during and after the regime (Cambodian Rocks on Wikipedia)
3: In the Killing Fields, they would blast propaganda music on speakers in order to muffle the screams of the people being killed.
My grandmother was one such example who fortunately made it out alive. She had a burn scar on the bottom of her foot from when she was living back there. As for the rest of my extended family, they may be missing or have been killed after we left for the states.

One thing I have an issue with is the kill % of Hitler. The number of people affected by his rule as dictator stretched far outside the borders of Germany. Therefore you should be using the total combined population of the countries which had their troops/people killed. Not just the population at the time of Germany.

I, along with her raised the two kids to be super adults, now with their own families living in Cambodia.
I retired , with my Cambodian wife back to UK in 2018. She is a lovely lady, full of kindness and liked by all who meet her. But there are times when the memories of those awful times come back to her, she stops talking and tears start rolling down her cheeks.

Unfortunately, most of the "leaders" in the establishment, would not realize that dictators like Pol Pot or Hitler are in for a "zero-sum" game until it becomes too late. Similar scenario happened when Hitler obliterated all other parties in the Reichstag by abusing the "state of emergency" loophole in Weimar Republic's constitution, all while other party leaders naively thought they could just negotiate with Hitler and stay in power. Two points on your intro: Arguing that hitler killed 21% of germany’s population is a little misleading. He killed a LOT of non-germans, ie europe’s Jews, russian prisoners, etc. Death counts in the millions for sure of non-germans which affects that percentage.
If you want to say he killed 21% as many people as he ruled over, that’s a little less clear but I think less misleading.

Point number two: going strictly off population percentage slain is not a suitable single metric for world’s deadliest. Let’s extrapolate this idea to the extreme: if some little village has a ruler that kills all 100 people in that village, can he really be considered to be more deadly than guys like pol pot, hitler, stalin, or mao? Part if the danger in these huge historical figures’ regimes is how hard it is to stop them. It took tens of millions of lives to stop hitler. It took 50 years of nuclear cold war to stop the USSR (granted nobody was as bad as stalin). Anybody can go in with a gun and stop the dude who has a 100% kill rate. Now, this gets muddier once you pass a few thousand people, but the point remains that when considering loss of precious human life, quantity is ALWAYS more awful than efficiency. Pol Pot was AWFUL, but the guys above him on the list were deadlier. Hitler also somewhat uniquely caused deaths by starting ww2 meaning his war-mongering tendencies add to his self-destructive (murdering his coontrymen) as well as his genocidal tendencies in a way that some of these other guys really can’t

    • @averagelizard2489

The 2nd point is flawed imo. Yes, there were more people, but there were also more resources to cause destruction. It's like saying Adólf is deadlier because he killed 2 instead of 1, but he actually had another person with him to cause more destruction.

What's especially chilling about this percentage is that compared to other dictators with a massive civilian death toll he was in charge for a lot shorter time. Stalin had a 12% death rate in a generation. Hitler had a 21% death rate in 12 years. Pol Pot had 36% death rate *in four*

great, more people should know this monster. As a Vietnamese there is something that I want to add (mostly around the Cambodian - Vietnamese war):
, The direct cause of the war between Khmer Rouge and Vietnam was a boder raid (sometime dubbed as an attempt of invasion) from Cambodia that kill thousand of Vietnamese civilians.
, While we steamrolled Pol Pot's force at open battles, the ragtag of these escaped to Thailand border and started a guerilla war. The newly pro-Vietnam Cambodian government led by Hun Sen, the Cambodian People's Party (the one that still alive to this day and just left the chair a few months ago to his son) was very weak so we had to stay for much longer until Hun Sen's government finally recognized as the legitimate government, and during the time we were hit hard by the international community, combined with economic trouble back home, making the 80s the most difficult time of modern Vietnam (at least post - reunion). The UN, being the UN and didn't do the work properly so off to the field we went.
,During the fighting in Thailand border, Vietnamese and Thai troops had several skirmish and led to several casualities. You might wonder why Thailand didn't attack the Khmer Rouge, given Pol Pot was a Communist? Think about this, which one was worse for Thailand? A ragtag of a dysfunctional Communist army, or the STRONGEST ARMY of Southeast Asia, which also both COMMUNIST and VIETNAMESE at the same time.
, US support for the Khmer Rouge was pale compared to China's. Nations condemned Vietnam mostly to protest against the Hun Sen's government (which at that time considered a puppet of Vietnam). In a bigger picture, US support to the Khmer Rouge, or rather anyone who oppose Hun Sen,to to show support to China (it's weird to think today, but back at 70s and 80s, China and US were good friends of each other). Technically speaking, the "recognized" government that most nation (including the US) considered legitimate was the CGDK, and the Khmer Rouge was just a part of it, that's why Cambodia is a kingdom today, because the royalism faction denounced the Khmer Rouge and decided to (uncomfortably) worked with Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party. Meanwhile China literally invaded Vietnam in 1979 and both nation had several fighting over the next 10 years (for example in 1988 China successfully invaded Gạt Ma island, which was under Vietnam control and China still holds it to this day)
, You should have talked about the denier of that monstrocity. From denying it ever exist, to blaming Vietnam instead or disown the atrocity of the crimes that Pol Pot committed.

The Khmer Rouge, a bunch of lunatics with AK-47s and not much else, was no match for the Vietnamese army. The invasion was over in two weeks, and so was the genocide. The Khmer Rouge killed everyone in the notorious Tuol Sleng prison before fleeing.
Conditions in Cambodia improved markedly after the invasion. Food aid ended the famine. The Khmer Rouge were relegated to the northwestern border jungle. The Vietnamese stayed for ten years. In typical bizarre Cold War politics fashion, the Khmer Rouge were recognized as the legitimate government of Cambodia until 1989! Vietnam only got aid from the Soviet Union. Despite international isolation, it continued to help Cambodia rebuild. It only got aid from the USSR.
When the Vietnamese left Cambodia, the government was centralized and strong enough to keep the Khmer Rouge at bay. The Khmer Rouge was finally dissolved in 1998 when Pol Pot died.
Today, of course, international opinion has swung back towards Vietnam and its attempts to help Cambodia despite all the obstacles. It was a true liberation, no doubt about it.

The problem with the proportion lf Death tolls/ country's population is that Stalin and Hitler's numbers weren't just from their Countries, but also from the ones they conquered and Subdued, so it's not like they did 17-21% of their own country.
That puts in perspective how much bloodlier he was than Stalin and Hitler to his people. He not only beat them in absolute Numbers, but also in the proportion.

You know what disturbing about this whole thing? Khmer Rouge is actually still alive today under a rebranded "democratic" government.
The top dog like Hunsen, former Khmer Rouge member who betrayed the party and joined Vietnam when they invade Cambodia, became a Prime Minister of Cambodia for 40 years using rigged election.
Khmer Rouge officers became Generals and Admiral of Cambodian Army, Navy and Air Force.
The underling who used to foresee the execution at the killing fields is the local administrator of the government.
The Khmer Rouge were never purge or punish. Far from it, their life became much better and successful thanks to the corrupted system under current regimes and Chinese leadership.

I'm guessing it's Pol Pot. He killed around 2 million, which isn't a lot compared to Stalin, Mao, nor Hitler, but that was a quarter of Cambodia.
Edit: I was correct. Even though I did know what he did, it was utterly horrifying and disturbing hearing what he did. God bless those who have died under his rule, the families that lost their loved ones, those who survived, and Cambodia as a country. It's a spit in the face of humanity that he wasn't held accountable for his crimes.

If we go by this logic, Pol Pot still isn't #1, or even in the top 5. 40% of East Timor's population was murdered during the Indonesian occupation, half of the Congolese population was killed during the Free State era, 80% of Namibia's native population was killed in the Herero and Namaqua genocide, the Mutunga and Tama tribes killed 93% of the Moriori people when they invaded the Chatham Islands, George Arthur killed nearly all full-blooded Tasmanian Aborigines, and 96% of indigenous Caribbeans were killed under King Ferdinand, with the Lucayans being wiped out completely.
The percentages used in the video also only really work if you look at nations as a whole, and not at the targeted groups. Hitler and Stalin were nearly successful at completely killing off the Roma and Circassians respectively, still putting them above Pol Pot.

There have been entire villages, ethnic groups, and tribes that have been fully wiped out in history, but a town of 1000 being all killed isn't really helpful to compare and say that the leader of the entire country was therefore the deadliest.

I do have a remark about the ranking of deadliest dictators in the beginning. The people who died due to the extermination programs (I use that term because it is the shoah + the extermination of soviet pow's, travellers, gays, the mentally handicapped and sadly many more groups) were not all from Nazi-Germany. They came from all over Europe and Russia. Why did you compare the 17 million deaths to the population of Nazi-Germany while most of these people were not inhabitants of that country? Also Hitler was responsible for ww2 which cost 3 percent of the global population their lives. When you want to compare percentages look at for example the Polish jews. Hitler killed roughly 90% of them.
Also by the logic you used if a dictator would rise in for example Monaco killing 50 percent of the population he or she would be the deadliest dictator in history while the Nazi's would kill roughly that many people in 2 days at the deadliest 3 month period of the shoah in 1942.. something to think about...
