- 10 mm socket
- 15 mm socket
- 13 mm socket
- Ratchet - I use Milwaukee Electric 3/8" Extended Reach
- Torque wrench
- Torque wrench extender

- Zinc washers (optional, if pulling heavy things with your hitch)

What do you use your hitch for?
bike racks, canoe/kayak trailer, jet ski trailer, motorcycle trailer, fishing boat trailer, tow dolly, etc.
The most popular use of the hitch is for carrying bicycles.
It is originally designed for towing.

I installed the stealth hitch on my 2018 Model 3 & while not being hard, it took time & involved removing a lot of stuff - but was actually a fun project. It sits pretty low when the 2" receiver in installed & can bottom out in some driveways & speed bumps. Taping into the electrical to get the 7 pin for a trailer was more than I wanted to risk. I recently ordered a Model Y & added the tow pkg for $1,000. I think thats well worth it considering you gonna be in @ $500-$800 for the hitch & 7pin, so its quite a good value specially considering you will already have tow mode on the car.

FYI you run the risk of voiding your warranty if you tow without a “Tesla” hitch and tow mode. Both only available through them. I’m currently fighting this with them.

Question is this: Im like you, I dont pull anything, but I do heavy MTB biking. When you put the bike on the receiver, does your Tesla give you any warnings that something is behind you or anything like that? I dont have the hitch YET, but I wonder if you MUST have that tow programmed into the Tesla System. I appreciate your help and awesome video.
If you put it on hitch mode, the warning sounds for objects detected behind you will be reduced or disabled to prevent constant alerts. But if you’re on hitch mode, you can’t be on autopilot so that sucks. You can still drive your Tesla without hitch mode on, but when going in reverse, it will definitely let you know there is something there lol
1000 is definitely worth the Tesla hitch. Installation looks pretty involved.
I might be inclined to DIY this…except that I’ll need a 4-pin trailer wiring plug, too. That extra bit pushes me over the top…worth $1K to have it all just done!
My tesla app says $1300
It's only $1000 if you get it when ordering. If you wait until you have the car they charge $1300
Especially when rack attack wants $900 installed for a stealth hitch

Just out of curiosity didn't you miss one plastic washer on the top bolts? They are 3 per side and the washers only went on the lower 2? Or am i missing something? @10:31 thanks
The bottom 2 will have the most friction and weight, so it's not required to have one on top. But it wouldn't hurt anything if you wanted to put one there

Any good anti-rattle clamps you recommend for the Model Y ? The ooening is too narrow for the traditional clamps on mine

Should you have also placed nylon washers between the trailer hitch and the crash bar too? Crash bar is Aluminium as well.
For what I’ll be using it for, it’ll be fine. If you are going to pull things, we recommend a different washer in the video.
@@tesbros still worrisome from my perspective, that’s all. Dissimilar Metals incident takes long time to develop and the damage will be significant as explained
@@dhudz04 doesn’t hurt to put more and low cost. You can get standard nylon washer from hardware store. Within time with the pressure, it may cause contact especially if you pull or put heavy loads on it.
What size are those nylon washers?
If the nylon washer is for rust-free mounting between steel and aluminum, how come the original steel to aluminum mount installed by Tesla didn't have the non-metal washer?
Good question. It doesn’t need the nylon washer unless it’s pulling something, causing friction in that area. So the original build wouldn’t have use for it
It's because the they have a black anti-rust coating on the bracket that was discarded.
Video looks easy...but is it for someone that isnt overly handy or mechanical?
I’d say it’s a medium to hard install and to give yourself around 4 hours to do it. You need to be comfortable taking apart your car and have all the tools to do so. But if all of that sounds good and you follow what I do in the video, you should be fine

I just found out the u-haul version of the install does not re-install the tesla OEM bumper back. The u-haul hitch serves at the new bumper. Is it better to re-install the tesla bumper over the trailer hitch?
what happens if I skip the tesla bumper?
I think I've seen some u-haul versions where the bumper is put back. Not sure which one you're referring to.. but I would choose a hitch that can be installed with the bumper put back, just because it hides it easily and the aerodynamics aren't affected while not in use.

Just so we are on the same page I am actually referring to the long metal (aluminum??) beam that is screwed onto the vehicle and NOT the rubberized plastic (or whatever material it is made of) that has the same color of the vehicle.
In your installation video you removed at that metal beam, replaced the plates that sit on both ends with the new hitch, and then installed the now heavier single piece back on the car.
In my opinion the metal beam I am talking about should be installed back like you did in your video so that the safety of the vehicle is not compromised.
How can we confirm this fits the Model Y 2023 as well?

does the 1 up rack cause the sensors to constantly beep while on the back with a bike?
when in reverse, it usually beeps with or without the bike on

Yes I’d still use them. Smaller risk though since you’re not pulling.

What year is that tesla? I bought a hitch but not sure if i should put the crash bar back. Tesla doesnt put it back when they install their OEM hitch.
