Years ago the Iron Maiden Fan Club asked its membership to vote for the one song you’d play for someone who’d never listened to them and say- THIS is Iron Maiden! This song won. By a landslide.
Flight 666, "The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner." It's an epic example of Maiden as storytellers. And as adapters; the song is a version of Coleridge's poem. It even uses a few stanzas from the poem itself: "Day after day, day after day, we stuck-- no breath, no motion./As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean."
Aside from being great musicians individually, the chemistry in this band is absolutely phenomenal. Those who know what I am talking about know how extraordinary it is. Iron Maiden is a fine example of how great music can be with the way they click. Every member compliments each other. It’s extremely satisfying to listen to. 2 thumbs up, way up!!!
The way the lyrics explore his frantic last hours, the questioning, the horror, the hope being chased by dread, it’s a brilliantly composed song. Great reaction!
Iron Maiden is my absolute favorite band of all time! And you will definitely find a good live version of this, as they have played it pretty much ever show since 1981. And Iron Maiden is a band that definitely is AMAZING live, so enjoy!
Maiden had 2 and now has 3 lead guitarists. 99% of the time they play on harmony. They can play each other's solos and sometimes live play them together. 1975 to present still selling out statiums.
Follows a long line of tradition in old European execution ballads, going back to the 1500s. A good example is "Fortune My Foe", which was often sung at public hangings. Often now set to the lute song, of the same name ,written by John Dowland in the late 16th Century. Even Akercocke, an extreme Metal band from the UK, included it on their 2nd album.
Welcome to something special. Has probably already been mentioned, but take what you've heard here and match it up against the Hammersmith 1982 live version, filmed 2 nights before the release of the album. See if you're not left speechless.
Best Maiden album Best line up and the best Maiden track! On drums the amazing and unique Clive Burr. Best Metal drummer. Sadly gone too soon RIP Clive
I've been a Maiden fan since 1980 and they're still my favourite band. I would recommend you listen to The Rime of the Ancient Mariner which was inspired by the poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The lyricism is world class and educational too. Enjoy the ride👍🏻
My favourite band is Rush but Maiden’s Seventh son of a seventh son is in my top 5 records of all time all genre combined. Maiden as made 2 perfect albums in Power slave and Seventh son of a seventh son.
Steve Harris is an amazing song writer and Bruce dickens’s vocals are amazing and the rest of the band Adrian and Dave on guitars are incredible but later on they got yanick and he adds so much to the band 😊
Rock In Rio 2001 and the Flight 666 live versions is so much better than the 1982 live version. The performances, the crowd, the sound quality, the atmosphere everything is just so in the pocket.
One of their very best and a heavy metal classic, I love the studio version as they tend to play it too fast live, and I get that, it's a concert, energy is high but it's a dirge, it needs to crawl just a bit, dude is walking to his own demise; also the listener never knows exactly what our protagonist has been accused of or if he is even guilty, those details don't matter, so well written, the tale feels complete.
one of the greatest metal songs ever recorded. This sold me on being a metal head in the 80s. Seen them live 5 times. most recently just 2 years ago - they're still kicking ass on stage.
Turned on UA-cam and this topped my feed! As a young tyke, I immediately clicked with Iron Maiden's storytelling. Then for Bruce Dickinson's powerful debut. And how he drew from history to write his lyrics. And the song's hook. And Steve Harris's bass. And... and... and... Then we were all marked and outcast as satan worshippers. Wha??? It's weird millions go see Friday the 13th and the like, featuring serial killers and society gives that an ok. But one little (um..., epic!) Number of the Beast LP and people lost their shit. Power of music? Up the Irons! Love the story in "Powerslave" if you want to add it to the queue. Hope you're well!
I always found that weird as well. Telling a horror story in 2 hours with gruesome images is cool, but a song of 5 or 6 minutes not okay 😅 Thanks for watching and the recommendation!
