I decided to open a vegetarian you tube channel to show to other people new vegetarian recipes and inspire them to eat less meat too, as I am doing right now!
I’m not vegan, but I’ve been primarily vegetarian my whole life! Even so, I’ve noticed that I’ve recently started to consume more fish (tuna) and cheese than I would like, so I’m currently working on reducing that and replacing it with beans where possible. Your videos have really helped me to be more mindful of how much animal products I consume. I love the practical advice. Improvement over perfection. Most vegan quit due to trying to be perfect. Being 80% vegan your whole life is so much better than 100% for a couple of years...
This channel was a big part of me deciding to eat more vegan. The sensible discussion, being understanding and not being super judgmental/strict slowly made me more open to veganism, and at some point I ended up actually researching the way animals are treated in my country's food industry instead of assuming that it would be better than in america. That did it for me, and I've been going strong for a few months. For me, it was super important that I could make the 'list' and be forgiving to myself - cutting out everything at once and being super strict felt a little too close to eating disorder-restricting type behavior which I was scared of. This way, I've changed most things to vegan, but still allow myself some non-vegan things until I feel like I can give them up on my own without making myself miserable. So thank you!
My partner and I did vegan-uary to try finally cutting out cheese (our last animal product we eat on a regular basis) and it’s gone surprisingly well! It’s funny; I went from eating mac and cheese and pizza everyday in college to only eating mac and cheese once a week, but going that last little bit was more nerve wracking somehow. And yet it was surprisingly easy and natural to do. I couldn’t have imagined four years ago in college doing this and yet here I am, and I can definitely say I wouldn’t have been able to do it, especially as healthfully minded, without this channel.
I used to love cheese, but I really don't care for it now. I cook with it (family not vegan) but I just don't feel like eating it. 1, 5 years vegan. Taste buds do change.
As long as you don't need stretch, vegan cheese sauces can be so so good. I have done ones with a cashew base, which does in my opinion kind of require a high-powered blender to get the right texture, but omg so delicious. There is also though some really good vegan cream cheese options out there. Trader Joe's is really good and not very expensive. That makes a great base for a cheesy sauce

Can you talk about how access to vegan items has changed over time and the rates of veganism and vegetarianism, sorta an analysis of access and trends?
I went to the about section of your channel to share it with my mom and the description 🤣💀 “A vegan that husky? What’s fueling that ass, sweet potatoes?!” And I died laughing.
I love not pressuring the all or nothing veganism (coming from a 5 year vegan). Plant based / vegan is quickly becoming a diet trend - it is concerning, because if people don’t come into this for solid reasons it could quickly lead to disordered eating.
then next thing u know they’re telling everyone how veganism gave them an eating disorder and it’s super restrictive, then whenever veganism comes up the carnists say ‘well i know someone who was vegan and they said-‘
Even when I first went vegan many years ago there was freelee and the raw food diets that are problematic. It’s unfortunate they made it so much about the food instead of the consumption and activism.
Also be aware and comfortable that people WILL comment on your food. As someone who had a very serious Ed, this is something I really dislike but always have to deal with since what I am eating is always seen as different. But, I have learned over the years that if you reply kindly and dont make a big deal out of it, then people will learn to just accept your food and sometimes even be curious to try some
I sort of did it gradually. I went completely vegetarian except I included tuna which is the only sea food that I like. I did this for the protein and of coarse I liked it. After about six months I stopped eating tuna mostly because of the possible mercury contamination and I wanted to completely eliminate saturated fat and cholesterol. Didn't miss anything except cheese. I have not even tried any vegan cheeses because they have just as much fat and also have significant saturated fat. It took me almost a year to stop craving cheese but I did stop craving it. Oysters, muscles, and clams will not care if you eat them! Believe me.
Not vegan yet (slowly but surely, we're at two full vegan days a week), but this year we've committed to being vegetarian full time. The only exception, that honestly I don't know will ever change, is my dad's bolognese (which I eat about twice a year maximum). It's such a comfort food and a bond between me and my dad, I used to help him cook it when I was tiny and it was the first recipe I ever learned (I can make it about the same with quorn mince now but it's not the same). Giving up cheese would be/will be/is difficult for us. But we're trying to reduce and holding out hope that one day some decent vegan replacements will become available.
Mushrooms are GROSS, but a tip from another UA-camr I have tried (that has made me move from a never mushroom person, to a twice a week mushroom person) is to cut them REALLY small (finely slice, then turn then around and finely slice the other way-they should look like pencil shavings!) and fry them first (before adding other things) w/o crowding them in the pan. They turn crunchy instead of mushy and taste umami rather than mushroom specific. Hope that helps someone out there!

I really appreciate your take on this lifestyle. I have given up dairy successfully and beef. Do not subscribe to pork or lamb. I'm adding more grains and beans however I'm so bloated and uncomfortable with the legumes. Does it get easier? I haven't added large portions just small amounts such as a tablespoon of lentils to quinoa. I'm stuck on poultry and eggs. Generally eat 1 hard boiled egg per day and one serving of chicken or turkey. I've reduced that already. Not going to give up mollusks because I feel it's the same as plants. Fish is a once weekly occurrence. So I'm working from here. Enjoying Milkadamia nut milk, kitehill cream cheese and I just love these oatmilk puddings from pettipot. That being said I find you have to be very careful with the nutmilks and meat replacements. The milks have ALOT of sugar and emulsifiers generally. The meats are filled with unhealthy oils as well. Also not comfortable with soy at all! I've always consumed large amounts of fruits, veggies and nuts & seeds so that is no issue. Anyone that has any tips I'd really appreciate it.
Ooo ground faux meat might be a good choice for someone like me that has dietary issues. Oh also I hate the feeling of raw meats/eggs. So cooking with mock meats would make me feel comfortable.
I have been vegan for 7 years, and I want to supplement myself with omega 3, but I live in a really little latin american country (El Salvador) and here is really hard to find that supplement vegan, and economy is like shit. I'm really considering taking a non-vegan supplement. I already take a multivitamin and protein which are in fact vegan, but sadly there are not omega 3 option for me and buying it online is to expensive in my situation. What do you think about it?
Awesome tips 😁 ...one of the most easy, (and delicious) tips I learned - eat a source of fat, with beta carotene foods (sw potato, carrot, etc...) for better absorption 🥰
literally the only thing i still eat on occasion is cheese which is why i don’t call myself a vegan even tho i am closer to vegan than vegetarian. its so frustrating ik my body is just addicted in some way
That’s how it is for me too. My partner and I basically used Veg-anuary to try not having cheese and we’ve found it surprisingly doable. We’d eat cheese only on the weekends normally and with specific dishes, so by finding good substitutes for cheese in those dishes we’ve been able to get through just fine.
Cheese was one thing I craved when I was vegan for two years. I found ways around it though. Chao, VioLife, and Nooch were all I needed. (I can't stay vegan due to a nickel allergy, it turns out) Yes, I am eating cheese now. 😅 It has no nickel in it, what can I say?
Honesty that’s great, don’t beat yourself up over some occasional cheese, you’re already having a great impact 👍🏻 Coming from a crazy cheese lover who is vegan for 2 years now, in the end it was the ethical part that made it easy for me to quit cheese.
@@treefrog1018 Well I've learned something new today! Had no clue nickel was in foods! I thought people with nickel allergies just had to be careful with jewellery. That must be really tough, I feel for you!
It took me four years of being vegetarian before I tried mock meat for the first time. I didn’t like meat, so I didn’t think I’d like mock meat. I also didn’t eat beans. I’m surprised I made it so long with so little protein lol. Now I eat lots of beans and mock meats 🙃
I wanted to go vegan, but what about vegans who languished to a miserable appearance and had to go back to eating meat? UA-cam is full of testimonials from them. What did they do wrong? I am scared.
Trying to increase plant protein foods--these are great ones to sub: chile, spaghetti (lentils), tacos (and burritos, tostados, etc), soups (wihite beans or chickpeas are good subs), etc. I think jack fruit, etc isn't great, it's also a little sweet and to me just doesn't work.
Looking for advice here? There's no vegan Greek yogurt where I live, how could I possibly replace it... There's practically only Greek yogurt and protein bars (again, no good vegan bars where I live) left in my diet that are non vegan. Love the channel ❤️
I'm vegetarian and really want to go vegan. However, I'm heavily into bodybuilding and weight lifting, and low fat dairy, especially greek yoghurt and quark, will be the hardest to remove. I've tried soy-based yoghurts, and while I'm quite happy drinking soy milk, soy and tofu yoghurts are not very nice in my opinion. Also, cheese. When someone can make cheese that isn't just congealed coconut fat and actually contains protein, that will help a lot. Sadly, all the faux cheeses I've seen are basically cheese-flavoured blocks of hard fat-all of the fat, less of the flavour, more of the price, less of the protein. Literally the only thing going for vegan cheese is it's vegan. It's not like replacing chicken with TVP or beef with seitan. Both TVP and seitan are cheap, high in protein, and can be made to taste good, just like chicken and beef. I do eat eggs, but not a lot. Eggs would be easier for me to cut out than cheese and yoghurt. If I wasn't into weight lifting, I wouldn't care. I know that being a vegan bodybuilder is absolutely possible, but for all the years I've spent as a vegetarian, and all the times I've tried going vegan, I keep failing at it.
eastern european cultures are very heavily into dairy - my mom doesnt care about meat, but I dont think she could live withour cottage cheese, kefir and yogurt… sadly
@@diegomagana4404 I think people do but because they are pretty limited its just less. I LOVED the vegan ham slices quorn do. I dont know how big that opinion is though
Can we talk about seitan and wheat protein not having an adequate amino acid profile when eaten with typical carb foods please? I regard them as non-usable protein because people will eat them with carbohydrate foods like bread, pasta potatoes, rice and low-protein (but high vitamin) vegetables. It's basically eating bread with more bread, minus some carbs. Most meals aren't going to add a whole bunch of e.g. beans on top to balance them out. In the UK we have a number of wheat based mock meats (and "soy and wheat protein" ingredient listed without the ratio mentioned...) on the shelves which is somewhat concerning. Wheat doesn't have the minerals found in legumes either - they are kind of junk foods.
They are lower in lysine. You can use seitan in combination with some legumes to get a more, complete protein. I usually use some pea protein, beans or chickpeas (or chickpea flour) in dishes I make with seitan.
@@andyk5572 I don't understand your point. Wheat protein is very nutritious and only low in one amino acid (lysine). It is very lean and low carb protein. If you eat ab balanced diet and get a variety of protein sources, you should be fine. Why would you not eat something just because it may not be 100% everything you need in that one ingredient? You don't approach any other foods that way, do you? All or nothing?
You dont need to eat a complete amino acid profile at every meal, just over the course of a day or so, so not really a concern. I love seitan for the high protein content!
You’re so hot & well-informed! Hope sometime I can have a conversation with you about animal rights and moral relativism. Favorite vegan channel by the way. Keep up the great work.

The only good vegan alternative to meat they have where i live is like this good plant based ground and maybe like vegan nuggets but everything else is really not good. stuff like gardein and store bought seitan just dont exist here. So here i am struggling my way with tofu >:
I'm not sure what part of the world you live in, but In Canada and the US, there is a store called Grocery Outlet. They sell stuff that is close to the expiry date and other things like that. I often get my Just Egg there for as little as 49 cents Canadian.
I use chickpea flour ( i make it myself and it's cheaper than buying it ) and add black salt ( it's a salt that tastes eggy, you add it at the end of dishes and it tastes eggy) it's really good! you can make omelettes, quiche, etc.
@@christianlacroix5430 wash the chickpeas and dry them really well( so avoid dirt etc) once dry place like 1/2 cup to a cup depending the size of your machine, in the blender at a time on high speed. once they are dust, sift them to remove big pieces and those you can blend again. store them in an airtight container. I usually make 1 part flour 2 parts water, spices, black salt, a dash of olive oil and some baking powder but it depends on the amount you aue making. there are a ton of recipes on Pinterest and UA-cam

Ooh all the militant vegans are gonna be so pissed at you for suggesting oysters as an alternative 🤣 I don’t care about taking supplements tho. I know my diet isn’t good enough to not supplement ✌️
Why not just use eggs instead of oysters? Eggs can be ethically harvested and you don't have to kill any animals. Also I'm not sure oysters are environmentally sustainable.
I've never seen seitan or some other mock meats you mentioned where I live, but there are a few others. For me the reason I'm not vegan is chicken and fish and a little goat milk. I love locally caught fresh fish and mussels and I know where the chicken and goat milk comes from also. I hate industrial farming. I'm about 90% whole food plant based which I'm fine with.
@@greenknitter Here in the UK it's called vital wheat gluten but not sure how the name varies country to country. If you're able to find some, Id highly recommend trying out the chickwheat recipe from avocadosandales! Shreds just like chicken, tastes great & high protein!
More than 200 million animals are killed for food around the world every day - just on land. Including wild-caught and farmed fishes, we get a total closer to 3 billion animals killed daily. @Dhruva Punde for some people it creates problems. Nutrition is a complicated subject and I like that Unnatural Vegan doesn't water things down. It has to be done right, which isn't necessarily easy.

Never plan on going vegan, but you can’t deny the health and environmental benefits of a mostly plant-based diet!
My veganniversary is January 22nd. Will be 7 years this year 👍😊
Happy Veganniversary for tomorrow and a big thank you from the animals!! 😊
Congratulations! 🎉

@@rowan6650 Thank you for being a voice of reason.
I will only add that he posts the exact opposite on some other websites. Clearly he is just a troll.
I think it’s also nice if you make a vegan friend somewhere’s too. Like in a local group or on social media. I found a bit of comfort talking out my issues with someone more experienced than trying to read about what I did wrong. It’s also nice to have a shopping buddy, especially one that finds coupons. Lol
My favourite high protein meal is your very satisfying hash with ground "meat"and beans. I have made double batches several times and freeze some for quick meals. I use black beans and top it with mango salsa, some Daiya cheese and diced avocado. Delicious and filling! Thanks for giving us the recipe.
Ooh, make a video with red beans and sausage.
Can you talk about how access to vegan items has changed over time and the rates of veganism and vegetarianism, sorta an analysis of access and trends?
Hello. I've been a dietary vegan for around 2 years now, due to a genetic metabolic disorder. Very helpful video. Thanks! 👍
I went to the about section of your channel to share it with my mom and the description 🤣💀
“A vegan that husky? What’s fueling that ass, sweet potatoes?!”
And I died laughing.
Love the time you take to make these videos, one less cow down when I. Watch you
Also be aware and comfortable that people WILL comment on your food.
Believe me.
I’m with you but I know some vegans will be pissed with reductarianism.
Maybe you two could make it with Beyond Meat together, if you can find it where you live!
My partner, is a flexitarian and they actually prefer alot of vegan options over the non vegan ones now. Its amazing
Thank you for this video! This is definitely one of the better vegan tips videos I've seen!
Curious she never mentions Brenda Davis RD. She is amazing too. A great example of aging super healthy as a vegan. She has written some great books on raising healthy kids and being vegan in all stages of life.
it's my 5 vegan anniversary today!! 🎉🎉
me and my (non-vegan) bf celebrated by going to an all vegan restaurant yesterday and it was so good! they have soft serve ice cream but sadly the machine was being cleaned when we went so we had a hot fudge chocolate cake with scooped ice cream instead, which was really good too 😋😋
Congrats!🎉🍾
@@TriggerHappy923 thank you! 😊💚
Could you comment on Rainbow Plant Life's videos?? She does really yummy recipe videos, sometimes very complex ones, other times really easy fast meals. I feel like her what i eat in a day's are easy to follow and very healthy and nutritions, with accurate protein intake. I love your more positive videos and i feel like this could be one of them.
The video with what she ate in a week would be nice.
Seitan?
9:20 As a New Yorker, my cream cheese bagel is a must. Thank god there are good alternatives.
Westsoy and Edensoy milk are excellent and have been around forever ❤
Ooo ground faux meat might be a good choice for someone like me that has dietary issues.
Oh also I hate the feeling of raw meats/eggs. So cooking with mock meats would make me feel comfortable.
Thanks for the great tips! ☺️
I’m not even a new vegan but I still watch these videos 😂
I have been vegan for 7 years, and I want to supplement myself with omega 3, but I live in a really little latin american country (El Salvador) and here is really hard to find that supplement vegan, and economy is like shit. I'm really considering taking a non-vegan supplement. I already take a multivitamin and protein which are in fact vegan, but sadly there are not omega 3 option for me and buying it online is to expensive in my situation. What do you think about it?
Starbursts are vegan in ireland and uk
(I can't stay vegan due to a nickel allergy, it turns out)
Yes, I am eating cheese now. 😅 It has no nickel in it, what can I say?
Honesty that’s great, don’t beat yourself up over some occasional cheese, you’re already having a great impact 👍🏻
Coming from a crazy cheese lover who is vegan for 2 years now, in the end it was the ethical part that made it easy for me to quit cheese.
if it helps, they’re coming out with real dairy cream cheese which is animal free
Thanks for promoting protein, it is so important and many vegans don't respect it.
9:29 LMAO ok but I get the cream cheese argument. I use a lot of cream cheese as sandwhich spreads which I eat daily.
I really enjoyed your oyster video but are the studies the same? From 7yrs ago?
OMG Thank you soo soo much for this video!! So helpful!!
I have been vegan for a month so I think I’m doing pretty good
After 7 years the only thing I still crave is canned tuna with mustard.
❤️
Sushi is the one I have a hard time giving up completely :(
I get the cream cheese. Cream cheese and cheddar would be my last hold outs.
I wanted to go vegan, but what about vegans who languished to a miserable appearance and had to go back to eating meat? UA-cam is full of testimonials from them. What did they do wrong? I am scared.
DO NOT go vegan. It's an inherently deficient diet.
Great video! Thank you!
Great video I am so grateful
Looking for advice here?
There's no vegan Greek yogurt where I live, how could I possibly replace it... There's practically only Greek yogurt and protein bars (again, no good vegan bars where I live) left in my diet that are non vegan.
Love the channel ❤️
@@darkcloudsandrainbows3309 will definitely try that way, thank you!
Twizzlers red vines and sour patch kids always vegan since at least the 1990s!!
Wait starbursts aren’t vegan? Why have I thought they were vegan all this time! I bought some for gingerbread houses this Christmas
vegan in the UK, not elsewhere apparently!
🙋🏼♀️ I love cream cheese that much. I eat bagels as an excuse to eat cream cheese.
eastern european cultures are very heavily into dairy - my mom doesnt care about meat, but I dont think she could live withour cottage cheese, kefir and yogurt… sadly
I see that there is b12 fortified nutritional yeast.
I’m that person who eats cream cheese everyday , I wanna try vegan cream cheese tho
Why does no one mention Mycoprotein when talking about vegan protein options? For real. Quorn roasts are delicious and juicy pure goodness!
Quorn has limited vegan products and the roasts arent vegan as they contain eggs
@@laurenemily8297 oh shoot. Well why don't people talk about the vegan quorn options?
@@diegomagana4404 I think people do but because they are pretty limited its just less. I LOVED the vegan ham slices quorn do.
I have seen some comments from people saying they dont like quorn because they still play heavily on the vegetarian advertising rather than moving towards being a vegan brand.
@@ThePotThickens When the packaging says "source of protein" why would anyone think they should do this though?

2:20 those grounds looks to real xD. The only good vegan alternative to meat they have where i live is like this good plant based ground and maybe like vegan nuggets but everything else is really not good. stuff like gardein and store bought seitan just dont exist here. So here i am struggling my way with tofu >:
Make a vegan guide to Portland?
Stuff like quinoa and peas and lentils always make me feel so sick
Anyone else getting crazy adds? Had 6 in the first 5 minutes. I’m all for creators getting that coin but there usually not that excessive lol
What is a good scrambled egg replacement that isn't tofu, or Just Egg? The Just brand is out of my budget sadly.
@@monrh6615 How do you make your chickpea flour ?
@@christianlacroix5430 wash the chickpeas and dry them really well( so avoid dirt etc) once dry place like 1/2 cup to a cup depending the size of your machine, in the blender at a time on high speed. once they are dust, sift them to remove big pieces and those you can blend again. store them in an airtight container. I usually make 1 part flour 2 parts water, spices, black salt, a dash of olive oil and some baking powder but it depends on the amount you aue making. there are a ton of recipes on Pinterest and UA-cam
@@christianlacroix5430 If you want to buyt it, it sometimes is sold as gram flour or besan, as well as chickpea flour. All the same thing :)

All B12 supplements are not vegan. Mine isn't, but I don't have an alternative where I live so that's how it is right now. (It contains gelatine).
They don’t have b12 spray? There is also fortified milk alternative and nutritional yeast. If no options than don’t sweat it
Ooh all the militant vegans are gonna be so pissed at you for suggesting oysters as an alternative 🤣
I don’t care about taking supplements tho.

More than 200 million animals are killed for food around the world every day - just on land. Including wild-caught and farmed fishes, we get a total closer to 3 billion animals killed daily. My newest vegan tip is don't be vegan! lol
@Dhruva Punde for some people it creates problems. Nutrition is a complicated subject and I like that Unnatural Vegan doesn't water things down. It has to be done right, which isn't necessarily easy.
I am missing (Fully Raw) Kristina kritiques from you, quite frankly. I want to see someone convince her not to go out into the sun, and call THAT skin care. It is the opposite. Sun exposure does not one any good, whatsoever. I also am interested to know what are your thoughts about her physique and obsession with her weight and being soooo scrawny.
I think the move away from the drama of being involved in constantly criticising someone who is never going to listen/change is a good move. Its just unnecessary drama stirring after a certain point.
