    Ivan was one of my best friends from age 15 to my late 20’s. I worshipped the ground he walked on. I had my own issues which I eventually dealt with about 20 years ago, but I never saw eye to eye with him after that. I tried, but things were too different. He stayed exactly the same throughout the years, but I changed drastically. Everything he’s saying is true, except the “logic & reason” thing is more like his version of logic & reason. He’s always been angry and frustrated that life isn’t working for him, but he’s never been willing to bend at all. Not very logical. Ironically, the times in his life where he has bent a bit were his most successful. His band Tongue did great things, but it wasn’t music he really even wanted to do. Back in the 90’s Marilyn Manson wanted him to play guitar for him, but he wouldn’t budge. He said he wanted to do his own thing. Then he ended up in Tongue *not* doing his own thing. Anyway, I wish him the best.

    • @jayssonblack3179
      @jayssonblack3179 2 роки тому +22

      Yeah, I really wish it was bullshit. Anyway, this was about 1995, right before he got super famous. Ivan’s girlfriend sent a press kit to Marylin, and he was calling saying he wanted Ivan in the band. They played phone tag, and supposedly M’s manager didn’t want Ivan at all. I don’t remember the end, but he never played with him. I saw Twiggy at a 13 Knots show prior to this in about 1992. 13 Knots were a pretty popular death rock band. They actually covered Sweet Dreams before MM, and way better. I’m pretty sure Twiggy got the idea to cover it from 13 Knots, but I can’t prove it. Ivan also turned down a gig playing guitar for Sylvain Sylvain in 1991. You have to understand, Ivan was the best guitarist known in Hollywood at that time. I actually didn’t like his band Tongue. Cool people, I just didn’t care for the music. Go look up Press Darlings on here. They were amazing.

      I don’t think I clarified enough in my last response. Marylin wanted Ivan in his band, but Marylin’s manager didn’t want him at all. Marylin had actually called Ivan on his phone apparently against his own managers wishes.

During my years on that drug, I was all talk, all ideas and dreams, and no action - pretty much exactly what Ivan describes. It takes some time sober before you get your motivation and drive back, and stop living in fear of what might happen if you actually start trying to achieve all the things H makes you comfortable just talking about. Heroin makes it very easy to simply live in the now, in a sort of cozy womb of the moment, but suddenly you realize your whole life has passed you by. I'd like to hear more from Ivan.

    The former acid dealer who loves Umphrey's McGee, Saturn, and now Ivan are the 3 guests on SWU whom i find myself relating to the most. At 38, i'm a bit younger than he is, so his comedy is a bit dated to me, but i still relate with that overall Generation X mentality that was needed to get through those times pre-internet, pre cell-phone. A lotttttt of Generation X didn't make it out alive, like he said.
    To some people, having someone in T.S.O.L. dedicating a song to another dude may sound like one big, "so what?!". You don't know Ivan or what he's endured to survive as long as he has. There's a reason you don't see many legit punk rockers that have reached his age. It's a very difficult life. This confirms my suspicions that Ivan is much more resilient and stronger than he lets on.
    "Silent Scream" and the Dance With Me album are more than just music to guys like Ivan. For them, it's a lifestyle that you don't just dress up and then dress down like a costume.
    i very much respect that Dez Cadena fr Black Flag was down to sing on a record Ivan played on. That's something to be proud of. He made his dent in music. You may not listen to it, but some people live it and love it, and he contributed to it. Ivan may die, but until his music dies, he will live on.
    I wish nothing but the best for him. good luck and much love from Kentucky.

    I feel like Ivan's story is fascinating but also a cautionary tale. I've known a few people like this. It's one thing to watch them for 45 minutes on a screen, but an altogether different thing to know them for decades and see their lives upended by addiction, bad health, terrible life choices and refusal to do anything that has a whiff of 'normality' to it. They are all smart, talented people but they also want to foist their deep philosophical insights onto you despite having no practical wisdom that grounds them in their day-to-day lives. It is interesting, but harder to take seriously when they get into their later years and seem perpetually stuck in the nostalgia of their glory days as beautiful rockers living out the heroin chic dream.

    The dream of starting off a band lingered until you realise that its an industry..guitars,drums etc..Guns and Roses,Foo fighters,Soundgarden,Pearljam.

      When you see a building, you know there is an builder. When you see a painting, you know there is a painter although the builder or the painter may of died hundreds of years ago. So when you see creation, you know there is a creator, and that creator is God. In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. To not believe in God is to believe that nothing created something, that is impossible for nothing to create something. Say if there was an explosion that created or cause everything, where did the elements come from that exploded. See it is a never ending cycle, the only truth is to affirm that God has no beginning and no end and he created all things. The creator is greater than his creation. So we can not put him on the same level as a man. All men have a beginning, but God had no beginning no end because he is not a created being.
      God is one being 3 distinct persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Each person is fully God, all co eternal and co equal. The Father is not the Son and the Son is not the Holy Spirit. They are distinct.
      Jesus is the second person of the Godhead the Son of God. The Father sent the Son ( Jesus ) to be born by the power of the Holy Spirit through a virgin named Mary. He was miraculously born. He is one person with 2 natures. Fully God and fully man. Jesus submitted himself to the Father in his humanity and lived a perfect life he was obedient until death on a cross. This is the legal implications of the cross, the 10 commandments is God's moral law and Gods standard is moral perfection. Here is some of them: You shall not lie, You shall not steal, You shall not commit adultery ( Jesus said whoever looks at a woman to lust has committed adultery with her in his heart, the same goes for a woman lusting after a man, And you shall not murder ( whoever is angry with someone is a murderer at heart), You shall have no gods before me ( This is to make up a God to suit yourself ) Do not take the name of the Lord Your God in vain ( Things like saying OMG and using God's name as meaningless or replacing a four letter filth word with God's name or Jesus Christ. To violate just one commandment is to be guilty of breaking the whole law. The wages of sin is death and punishment in hell which is God's prison. The punishment is eternal because God is eternal, We broke God's law and Jesus paid our fine. If you are in court and have a stack of speeding tickets and somebody pays your fine the Judge can let you go free even though you are guilty. That is what Jesus did for us on the cross. He gave his life so that sinners maybe reconciled to God and be free of the coming Judgment. He paid our wages our fine. It is appointed once to die and after this comes the Judgment. That is why Jesus last words on the cross was IT IS FINISHED! He finished paying the debt. He was buried and rose from the grave on the 3rd day defeating death proving he was who he claimed to be. God is so good he must punish sin, we will have to pay for our own sin if we reject the only person who took God's wrath for sin. There is no other name under heaven in which we might be saved. In order to be saved from God's wrath we need to repent ( turn from sin) and trust in Jesus alone not our own goodness. We can not be good because we have already broken God's law that requires perfect obedience. Jesus kept the law for us, when we repent and trust in him. His perfect life gets credited to our account, so when God the Father looks at us he sees you as perfect and righteous. (Please consider this)
      Suppose a murder rapes a woman and slits her throat but stands before the judge and says I help older women cross the street and give to the poor, a just Judge would say I am not judging based on the works you perform but judging you based on the crimes that you have committed. In the same way good works can not save us. God is rich in mercy for all who call upon him. Turn from your sin and trust in Jesus Christ alone and you will inherit the Kingdom of God and live forever
