- Here David is interviewed on The Russell Harty Show over a satellite connection in 1975.
The interview was an awkward affair, made more difficult by the time delay of the satellite link and not forgetting this is at the height of his cocaine addiction Bowie is Clearly not comfortable, looking bemused baffled and at times bewildered by Harty’s painful questioning & woeful attempts to be playful and humorous.

"How are you, Russell? It's nice to see you." Classic and classy response to a stupid question.
I love that.I have used that”classic intruduction”many times with people that start off a conversation in a weird way.
He's brown bread, has been since 1988
"a" stupid question? /// This interviewer has the intellect and creativity of a swamp fly.
"Yes."
@@taylorj6177 one of the worst interviews ever. Why celebrities ever agreed to go on his shows, I’ll never understand.
David always seemed to show the most sincere respect for people that didnt "get" his art. He was never rude in his answers, even when questions often were quite rude, or were asked to rile him up. Have never seen him falling for that bait. Bowie was a class act, at any age
...and at the end of it he said, "I love you very much".
Mmm… sardonic is the way I would describe David Bowie here….superior and a bit scornful is how I would describe the interviewer. ‘Rude’ is a very abstract word.
Sometimes it is absolutely necessary to call people out on their ‘merde’ as Bette Davis would describe it. It all depends on the situation….Bowie definitely called out members of the public when they harassed him, invaded his privacy and space when he was out and about.
your use of the phrase 'get his art' makes it seem like Bowie was at the far end of the avant-garde
he was entirely palatable to most people
@@sexobscura yes, but also to a lot of people he wasn't. But in every interview I've seen where he's almost being ridiculed he was always a gentleman.
How on Earth did Russell Harty ever have a career?? He was bloody terrible.
The accent
Because he was homosexual.
@@gmseed1908 That makes no sense.
I hear arrogance in his voice, but it seems to come out from selfinsurance
I agree totally - absolutely abysmal 🤦♀️
David was a real gentleman & restrained, considering Russell Harty's line of stupid questioning. A true star in every sense of the word. May David rest in peace.
It was like watching Leonardo Da Vinci being interviewed by Homer Simpson.

For someone who was supposedly off his head on cocaine during this, Bowie has held it together extremely well

he a lil fried here darling
He wasn't using coke before this interview. If he was, he'd be sniffing and swallowing throughout the entire segment.
David is just 28 here and incredibly mature amd cool, Harty is a prat but thats what makes this so entertaining and totally priceless as David has the opportunity to shine above Harty - Bowie remains the ultimate Rock Legend.
I’m at 4 minutes in and listening to that ‘prat’ repeatedly steer the interview into a ditch makes me want to blow my brains out. What waste of Bowie’s intellect and presence.
I bit odd.
Harty seems to try to continually diminish DB.
DB 1000x what harty was.
He’s also incredibly high as f***.

@@SuperLisalis bit of a Cliffhanger!
Totally ,🤗🤭 David gracefully dealing with him ..just love this
David was also in character as the thin white duke, plus a stratospheric cocaine addiction ;-)
Agreed.
Russel Harty was so rude towards David Bowie. Luckily David Bowie was an intelligent man and it shows during this interview in the way he handled Russels questions. I have the feeling that Russel was often disrespectful towards his guests on his show, because even Grace Jones he managed to piss off.
Grace Jones punched him live on TV haha🤣
Yes she did and truthfully he deserved it. 🤣
He was also very rude to The Who, but Keith Moon really showed him up.
Hartys only brave cos the camera is running for witnesses to see 🎥👀, otherwise he wouldn't be so cheeky ✌️
And he looks like a Russel potato head...the irony...David you are the bomb never change please
What you need to remember when watching this interview is that it wasn't as acceptable as it is today to be gay. Homosexuality had only been legalised eight years earlier, in 1965 (before that, you could go to prison for being gay in the UK).
Russel Harty was gay, and in 1972 - just before he "retired to live in the US - Bowie had come out as gay in an interview published in Melody Maker, Britain’s leading music magazine ("I’m gay. And always have been, even when I was David Jones").
Russel Harty opens this interview by reminding Bowie that the last time they met, Bowie had an earring hanging from "either your left or right ear". This was a reference to Bowies self-proclaimed gayness - wearing an earring in the right ear was code for "I'm gay" - and the discussion it had sparked in the UK media. Some people believed that Bowie was claiming to be gay in order to be controversial and court publicity. Harty is ribbing Bowie with this comment, which is why Bowie ignores it and responds with "How are you Russel. It's nice to see you," In other words "don't go there."
This opening jibe sets the tone for the rest of the interview, which essentially consisted of Harty trying to bait Bowie, in several instances with other oblique reference to Bowie's sexual orientation - which was really all Harty was interested in. Bowie was having none of this gay bitchiness, and "played it straight", forcing Harty to do the same.
Harty was a dreadful interviewer, and he knew nothing about pop/rock music, let alone Bowie's music.
And no wonder Grace Jones turned on him.
Homosexuality was legalised in 1967; it was capital punishment that was abandoned in 1965. They should've banned Russell Harty around the same time!
@@brucevair-turnbull8082 Yes, you are correct. The Act came into force in 1967. It was proposed in 1965 and it took two years to become law. I made a typo. As I said, this interview took place just eight years after homosexuality had been decriminalised. There was still a stigma attached to being gay. Bowie had walked back his Melody Maker admission and had reverted to his earlier position of ambiguity. I think he felt that he had overstepped the mark by allowing himself to be placed in an existing category, and he may also have felt that his admission to being gay in MM had alienated many of his straight fans. Harty was taunting him over non-committal stance and basically challenging him to either confirm that he was gay or admit that he was pretending to be "possibly gay" to court controversy and get media headlines (and possibly attract a gay following).
"Gay", yet married twice, he fell deeply in love with Iman, and was married to her until his death.
What great comments by Bowie. He was truly his own person and we are blessed to have his music to enjoy.
And I love the end..."I'll be David Bowie."
The Great David Bowie’s genius was so evident. He had class, restraint, and manners that belied his years. To say nothing of his insight and understanding of interpersonal dynamics.
Great post.
LOL. Yeah, he was pretty into "interpersonal dynamics", especially in the 70s.
...and Russell Harty just asks banal, pointless questions

Such an English conversation. Whitty, and back handed compliments. Bowie was in his element.
Finally someone gets it 100%...they are being cheeky Brits! Why are we looking at this through the eyes of today's vision?
Well, I think it's clear that you literally have no idea who Bowie is and have never watched a second of any other interview. I say all that because he literally couldn't possibly be or appear more "out of his element". There's no such thing as out of his element for Bowie, except for in this moment.
Pathetic questions. Harty was clueless.
I dont think he was clueless.. he was trying to cause a reaction.. ive never seen someone manipulative keep circling and jabbing some one so consistently on air like that.
Like a surgeon
Harty was absolutely and utterly RUDE! He was horrible to Mr. Bowie! How graceful a man was beloved David to tolerate the fool! He was definitely so well mannered. Harty shows his horrible self to us all in how he mistreated David. As always, David rose above him in the style of a true and undeniable star and GENTLEMAN! ❤️⭐❤️
I didn’t realize that Harty was being rude. I only thought that was exemplary of typical British mannerisms; so much would have gone over my head(and I’m 59 years old!).
Okay; I saw some more of the interview-- Harty’s such a dick! Nevertheless Bowie handled him with tact and finesse.
What a dickhead!
Right to the end!
Bowie looked better, from his vantage point from the higher ground.
DB Pity the Fools!!
@@thepull-outking5123 I'm British and I don't think Harty was being deliberately rude. He was being accidentally rude, due to his tin-eared personality. The same thing happened with the infamous Grace Jones interview.
David Bowie was the sanest person in the conversation for once
for once? he usually always was. Far more intelligent than the people interviewing him
He often was.
For once? Da fuck are you talking about?
6:45 Harty mentions the expensive satellite being used for the interview. 30 seconds later, Bowie talks about how lots of money can't make a show good. 😂
Each escalation of untrue motives, DB rose above him with actual, painfully emotive reality.
It was good to see a relaxed DB answering not too demanding questions and refusing to answer some others because of time constraints. I'm sure he could have tied Harty in knots if he wanted to, but he was a kind and respectfully polite gentleman although you can glimpse his impatience at times with the stifled sighs and occasional blurting out in frustration : "A suit!!!" Thanks for this.
I think everyone is missing the point. Harty was being his pompous self during this interview and Bowie was well acquainted with him and his boorish style. I think it made TV gold with wonderfully sly digs being traded from both camps. I'm sure David thoroughly enjoyed himself knowing that he had a brilliant sense of humour. He looks amazing although this wasn't the healthiest period of his life. Belated Happy 75th Birthday for yesterday Love ya x
I know these people are so guarded.
Well said, I love this interview. Maybe people don't realise that in England, being rude to someone can be the highest form of showing affection.
Mark, you're someone who gets it. My comment previously responding to the notion: "Seems at the time the networks wanted interviewers of modern music bands/bandleaders to be a bit provocative. Possibly somewhat of a British thing at the time also."
Mark Nicholson +
Oh, I believe that David enjoyed it, he didn't want to give away too much knowing the core audience of Harty. My friends always ribbed me for liking Tom Synder, and yes, he was a bit dense at times ( laughing ) but he was genuine, Harty was simply being obtuse.
Ok.. I kind of got that impression a bit up front.. That makes a lot more sense then lol! I don't think someone would sit there and put up with this jerk if they hadn't bee "in" on it, right?? Unless you were Super desperate for the attention for some reason? Which I wouldn't think Bowie was/ would have been...
Wow what an opportunity wasted. Can't really call it an interview Russel Harty reminds me of a rude belligerent drunk looking to get a rise out of someone at a party. Well done to David Bowie. For keeping his cool and dignity.
At that age, I wouldn't have been able to avoid rising to the bait. He was so composed. Bravo David!
An absolute legend, the world is a smaller place without David Bowie.

Agreed.
Demonic individual to the very end. Didn’t fool many as a worldly “creative” “artsy” personality. The world is a much better place without him for sure. Sad life.
It would be but we are lucky he is still in the world.
Good to see the entire interview. I've seen extracts before but never the entire thing. Harty's problem was clear in that he knew nothing of Bowie's music and didn't have a feel for the type of questions to ask. But great to see Bowie being sarcastic and treating the whole thing with the contempt it deserved.
Yes, very poor research on russell's side.
And with so much class and intelligence
They both seemed slightly amused. Why is everyone taking this exchange so seriously?
Absolutely.
David Bowie was a really nice guy

@@arricammarques1955 Whats hilarious to me is that Bowie is clearly high as a kite, yet still the interviewer is being massively outclassed. A shining example of how to answer interview questions, a shining example of how to be a shit interviewer.

Russel Harty LEGEND .........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing. He's got absolute dead eyes during the interview (anybody would, my god) but the cut to "Golden Years" on Soul Train sees him come to life more with every line of the song he sings. Then we're back at the interview and once again Bowie's face has that look one gets when the hand on the clock does. not. move. What a trooper.
No,his eyes look tired and sad.Not dead,I did not find.🙄
I Love Russels way of interviewing ...so Laid back ......!
It looked to me like he was enjoying the interview in a way. The interview seemed a bit playful on both ends.
Yea I Think They get on in a kind of perplexed way 😂😂
Bowie is absolute class ...so restrained, thoughtful, and intelligent in this interview. Watching Harty, on the other hand, makes me cringe! It's hard to believe that a chat show host could have been so pompous and rude. I remember seeing him on the Wogan show with Sue Lawley, where he was just as rude to Vivienne Westwood.
You should remember the beating Grace Jones gave to Harty live on TV, in the very early 1980s. You reap what you sow.......

Golden Years * David Bowie
Bowie was just so incredibly ahead of his time.
Frankly still is…
This is like a comedy sketch rather than a legitimate interview! Very surreal because of the old TV etc. Bowie was the greatest, sorely missed. I wonder what he would have thought of the 2020s so far 😬
I can imagine Russell Harty inspired Alan Partridge somewhere down the line.
This is Bowie at his finest being interviewed by an English Version of Ron Burgundy 😂😂😂 I love it
Beautifully put
10:15 "I'm a fan of yours." Very astute of Bowie. He recognised that Russell Harty's technique was actually pretty smart in that he provoked intelligent and surprising responses from his guests.

Precisely...
Rudeness isn't necessary to create interesting discussion, what a dumb idea.
Wow what a piece of history. Not only was the recording near perfect, Bowie was on amazing form. I was also singing along to Golden Years, great song. I’ve spoken across the pond via satellite and the delay was a good second, this seemed pretty much instantaneous, Bowie correcting Harty almost soon as the words are spoken. Thanks for posting.
Good job on David's part , that interview was brutal.
The difference is today that interview would have never taken place!! Back then you could mix ignorance and intelligence and everyone still got along!! Here’s the proof!!

Oh my... The Bay City Rollers?! Well, Bowie surely couldn't compete with their success, eh, Russel? LOL! That Harty guy really was clueless, wasn't he?
Wasn't that laughable? Trying to compare a 'flash-in-the-pan' bubblegum band to a pre-destined musical LEGEND? Somebody, give that man a rag to wipe the disgrace off his face, please? No, second thought, leave it right there where it belongs.
I actually LOL’d at that. I hope he looked back at this and cringed. He was very dismissive of Bowie and clearly undervalued and didn’t understand him.
The press had so sensationalized its reporting on Bowie, that it made him cautious about what he said. But over time he relaxed into his role as rock god. Nice to see him baffling interviewers though.
This is an incredibly awkward interview, Harty just asks some strange questions and fairly rude, and you can see Bowie thinking I'm just going to be as awkward back.
I wasn't allowed to swear when I was a kid but the only time I called someone a "prick" was whenever I saw Russel Farty on T.V. He didn't deserve to speak to Bowie.
This is the first time I have ever heard of Russell Harty, maybe it’s his lousy interviewing or the fact that he looks like his mum dressed him and brushed his hair before he went on ( fine when your a kid, but not at his age ) however, David Bowie was a pop icon and has millions of fans still to this day, I don’t hear anyone crying out for Russell Harty shows to be re aired !!
I'd like to see them, he had loads od cool 70s stars on
I ventured into the thoughts and feelings of DB some years ago, via this exact interview, and found him extremely fascinating, thoughtful, and definitely mysterious. Today, all these years later, I find this interview quite amusing and funny listening to his sharp and witty comebacks, which at times went over Mr.Hartys' head, don't you think reader?
I would have loved to have met DB and had the fortune of asking some questions over a coffee or three. I would have listened intently to his religious beliefs and spiritual understandings. I digress.

Fun fact: back in 1975, you had to book satellite time like this in advance because the technology hadn't caught up nearly with the demand. On the day this interview occurred, the Spanish government wanted to use the satellite link-up to announce the death of Generalissimo Francisco Franco - but Bowie refused to give up his spot, so they had to wait for this.
Bowie was so intelligent those who tried to outsmart him made fools of themselves and missed the essence of Bowie and his incredible talent

I think he seemed peeved, but tried to make the best of it.
Shortly before the interview, the dictator Generalissimo Francisco Franco of Spain had died, which was HUGE news. Bowie was asked to delay the interview so LWT could go on with the story, and he said no, he would do it when scheduled or not at all. LWT blinked.
Apparently the Russians wanted the satellite too 😂😂
Very famous true story. Satellites and all.
Franco died 8 days before the interview.
I m from Spain, big news in WhatsApp way? The english supported the coup in 1936 from the beggining. Churchill supported Franco, and Hitler bombing civil population at a ratio of 1000 persons at day. Such a terrible interview. Harty seemed to have no idea what to ask other than being rude. He suffered from what was quite common in those days; older men who saw new music as weird and awful and the artists as being stupid and self serving. Boy did Bowie prove them wrong.
How old was Harty in this interview? Not much older than David, I guess? But Harty is there to please the conservative so it's kind of understandable that he asked what he asked
@@hom0s4cer Good point, although the age difference (some 13 yrs) means his cultural experience would have been considerably different in the days. The rapid musical development from the mid 1950's though until the 1970's produced radically different conceptions of what music was. Even in the 1970's, the degree to which fans of early '70's music could not grasp punk and New Wave in the late part of the decade shows how tastes back then changed so quickly. Yes, Harty represented conservative attitudes and reflected the viewers opinions he cultivated though. An unpleasant man though and a poor interview, even by his low standards.
