I’ve owned 2 Tacomas and I’m currently driving a ‘24 Pro4X that I love. The thing with the turbo trucks is that the turbo and associated cooling system add 2 more layers of complexity. Turbos work great and are reliable on low rpm diesel engines but no so much on high rpm gas engines.
100 % right ! as a mechanic and my son is a master mechanic we have seen that, tubro 4s in heavy truck applications are under alot of stress and wear out much faster than say a tried and true V6/8.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed well they're not as reliable, forced induction causes more pressure in the engine block wearing them out faster. If you knew anything about engines that would be a major concern of yours.
@@aidenarkham Turbo engines have been around for decades, I know plenty about engines, it’s not a concern. We’ve owned several turbo cars with zero issues, one with 50K miles and was perfect fine and running normal.
I drove both with the intent of buying one. The sticker on the 24 Pro4x Frontier was 49k basically every option minus the sports bar (I wanted a hard folding tonneau anyways). The 24 Toyota sport (I've owned a 17 Sport Taco and a 06 TRD tundra) with way less options came in at 48k. To get the Sport equally equipped the dealer would have had to order it or have it brought in from another dealer.. That said equally equipped 55k+. I bought the Frontier. for 46k. That said... First complaint by many is the hydraulic steering. My brother in Law agreed (he has electronic steering) we love it. I live through times when the only options were power, rack and pinion or nothing. More feel and control. At freeway speeds it's rock steady. I guess avoid if your arms are noodle size. Out of date tech. I got rear sonar, 360 cameras, heated steering wheel, remote start. Fender 400+ watt 10 speaker stereo that also rocks. Wireless Carplay and charging..... The head unit is 9 inches but has all the buttons for everything from Nav to cameras and is crystal clear. I didn't personally like the 14" tablet in the Taco. Sunroof. Anti-Gravity seats were way better than the Tacoma's IMO. I like the analog gauges along with the led screen. Tech is Tech I think the complaints are more about aesthetics. The 6 cylinder and 9 speed trainy were buttery smooth. I prefer the Frontier styling. The steps are dated they're not welded on. The steps are bolted and removable for off road. Look each to their opinions but the reviewer here was biased IMO.
I’ve never owned either, so I can’t be biased here. Both are great trucks, but it’s a personal preference which one you’d pick. Just because I pick one over the other, doesn’t make it biased.
@@DDDYLN *7 Months into ownership of the 24 Pro 4x I still love it, no issues as of yet and I would take hydraulic steering over electronic (now) any day. Is it harder to turn in a parking lot yes but really no big deal. Travelling down the road there is so much feel and it is rock solid.
There's a difference between complaining and just pointing out how much heavier the steering is than all the other trucks in this class. As someone who drives multiple cars a day, the Frontier has heavy steering like my Lamborghini. No other car has that heavy of steering. So it's very noticeable and different from modern vehicles
Compared to the Tacoma, it'd very heavy. And after filming as many cars as I do, it stands out to be very heavy steering compared to every other car I drive
@@BrosFOURRSpeed Dude, get a SUV then, not a truck. Don't compare a Frontier to a car. The Frontier's smooth hydraulic steering is one of the main reasons I bought one. The wife loves it too.
@@phw2274 I’m comparing the Frontier to the Tacoma. I’ve also compared it to the Ranger. The frontier is noticeably much heavier in the slow speeds then the other trucks in this class. Not necessarily a bad thing. Just something to point out. We’ve also off roaded the frontier, Canyon, Colorado and other mid sized SUV’s and trucks and the Frontier once again is very noticeable with having heavy steering which in off road circumstances does make it not as easy to navigate slow speed obstacles. Don’t be offended by me saying that, it’s just something to notice in the Frontier over the competition
@@BrosFOURRSpeed That's perfectly fine, and you're right, that's a matter of opinion. If you're used to fingertip steering, I guess there is a difference. I can't wait to get back into my Frontier when I drive an over assisted electric steering vehicle. Just MHO.
Thanks for the review man, I’m in the market for a modern pickup to do some light over landing, diy jobs and roadtrips. My current car is a 2013 BMW 5 series with a 4 cylinder twin turbo has almost 200k miles and never has issues. More reliable then any American brand or Nissan I’ve owned so definitely not a put off for me to buy the new engine in the Tacoma! Definitely going to check them out when they drop in price soon
Frontier all the way, about to scoop one up later this month! The frontier seems to be the more dependable when it's coming to reliability right now. That v6 is gonna be so much more better heading into the next 10 years. Maybe when the technology gets better that 4 cylinder can be fine but for it to be in a truck and it be that expensive no thanks. Loved tacomas all my life and wanted one for so long but no that I'm finally able to get a truck I'm getting that v6 just because it's gonna be cheaper to maintain longterm 🎉
@@thecurlyhero452 you realize that 4 cylinders have been in trucks for decades right? That’s not new at all.. They aren’t more expensive to maintain either. Did you look that up or just think that?
In my professional opinion, having visited both dealerships, I would like to provide an unbiased assessment. I was seeking a base trim line truck for leasing purposes. In terms of aesthetics, the Nissan appeared rather inexpensive and compact, while the Tacoma exuded a more substantial and visually appealing presence. Regarding the financial aspect, the monthly lease for the Nissan was quoted at $650, whereas the Tacoma surprisingly offered a more favorable rate of $445 per month.
Wow that is pretty surprising to see that big of a price difference and the Tacoma being that much less. Seems like a pretty good business truck then. Definitely a bit higher quality even when looking at both base models
I think it's because most of the time you are not doing pedal to the floor to 60. Just driving around town half throttle up to the 45mph speed limit, thats where the Tacoma is for sure quicker. It just feels easier to get to speed and drive around town. So there is more usable power for most situations. 0-60 times don't really mean much. They don't actually show normal real world driving
Reminds me of my 2005 Titan Off Road. The Frontier is essentially a mini Titan. Wish they would offer an access cab or single cab, bigger brakes and wheels, and a full length running board.
I test drove a new one and did notice the "heavy" steering. It wouldn't have been a problem for me. I have a 2012 and the turning radius is a joke, simply the worst. I also had a 1994 P/U and the turning radius was horrible as well, but I have adjusted my driving to that.
How many miles can the Frontier go with any major issues Im leaning towards buying one next year. I have a WK2 I want to sell next year, Jeep has lost me as a customer they purposely make things cheap to earn money on repairs and parts.
@@alexanderb4795 I owned a 2nd and 3rd gen, definitely reliable. Only time will tell with the 4th, no one has high mileage ones yet since they are new.

We've had a new Frontier as a press car a few times. Obviously we can turn the wheel. But it has a much more weighted feel than every other truck in this segment. It's very noticeable. So we'll point it out. Tacoma is more capable tho for all work related tasks
2024 frontier s king cab in my area ( clearwater fl) under $28k its all I need ! no bs do not even need power windows a back up cam or a screen..just a truck ! still drive a 2003 f150 has no issues
I totally get the back seats on the frontier not being the best. But I also grew up with the old rangers that had folding seats that faced the middle of the truck. Frontier all the way for me. Only way to make it better would be if you could get it with a manual
I own a 2022 Frontier, and out of curiosity, I sat in a 2024 Tacoma back seat. The Tacoma felt much tighter to me all around. I'll take a slightly upright seatback for a more useable backseat area. I also do not like the look and feel of the materials inside, as well as the tonka truck styling inside and out. The Frontier is for someone that wants a truck, not a SUV with a bed. Love the ride, quietness, and yes, the steering. I dislike the over assisted feel of electric steering in a truck. Hopefully the future of this Taco 4cyl turbo won't be the same as the major issues happening to the Tundra.
@@BrosFOURRSpeedPerhaps that was a bit of an exaggeration, lol. However, it's been designed to appeal to people that want the feel of a mall crawler that drives like an SUV, instead of a more traditional truck.
Pro 4X has payload of 1220 and not 1500. Specs on Toyota website says payload to be 1610 to 1705 (Dealer websites say 1380) in offroad trims. Like others have said a fair comparison would have been Pro-4X with Off-Road Premium. Ground clearance of 8.6 in Pro4X vs 11 in ORP makes another big difference. These become important if planning to Off-road.
These are the only trucks I had access too. They both cost the same, so it was cool seeing what each truck offers at $47k. I stated max Frontier Payload figures, and that the Pro4X is lower then the max. TRD Sport has the same ground clearance as the off road and still much more then the Nissan
Anyone else find it weird that Toyota tries to make their 4 cylinder look like a V6 by orienting the engine in that direction. Mind you this is from the same family of engines that currently sits in the RAV4.
Well being a RWD vehicle, the transmission would need to be mounted on the end of the engine inline with the crankshaft. FWD vehicles can have the engine sideways since the front wheel drive transmission needs to be oriented different then the RWD biased vehicles.
My old 8' bed with a camper shell makes weekend camping with a cot and full-size mattress a breeze. Now I can't even buy an 8'. Nice review 👍 I also ended up choosing the tacoma, the nice thing about a 4 cylinder and no hybrid system is all the room you get under the hood! Everything seems to be very accessible
@@BrosFOURRSpeed the hybrid version are very powerful, and Toyota has been making hybrids longer than any other company. However, I believe this is their first hybrid that has a turbo 4 cylinder gasoline engine.
Yeah they sure are giving customers what they want…smaller motor…way higher prices even for the very basic trucks…yep I can see exactly why they’re not selling the shit out of them. I mean it’s ridiculous that a trd off road with no leather, no big screen and maybe it has the rear locker is pushing 50k half the time when it wasn’t so long ago that you could get a top line Tacoma trd pro for maybe a little more then 50k. Make this make sense for me especially when they moved Tacoma production to Mexico cutting their labor cost down to 1/3 what it was. There’s a reason they’re not selling well an it’s not just interest rates or people waiting for the hybrid to be available.
You have a link showing they aren't selling? Or just saying that.. You must not have spec'd one, because you can get a TRD Offroad for $50K with leather, big screen and locker..might want to research that first.. And price inflation is everywhere, not just with the tacoma.. TRD Off-Road Upgrade Package (A/T) - includes fabric-trimmed seats with heated 8-way power-adjustable front seats, leather-trimmed heated steering wheel, JBL® * Premium Audio with JBL® * FLEX portable speaker, Qi-compatible wireless charging, * Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking (PA w/AB), * prewired auxiliary switches, Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (ITBC), * Digital Key * capability, 400W/120V * AC power inverter, and power horizontal rear window
The only advantage the new Tacoma has over the Frontier is the availability of a manual transmission. Sticking with my 2019 Off Road manual transmission.

Your review comes across with a bias to the Tacoma. I just test drove both trucks. The Frontier felt peppier, was better fit and finish and the hood didn’t flutter going over crosswalks, was significantly cheaper and doesn’t have a history of melting its transmission. Guess which truck I bought?
Glad that works for you. I’ve never owned either, so how am I bias? Because I like the Tacoma more? Buy what works for you…I think the Tacoma is much better, personal opinion, not biased.. The Tacoma doesn’t have a history of melting the transmission, so not sure where you got that from..
Just picked up a new 2024 Frontier Pro4X and already love it! Drives great. Looking forward to old school reliability of the V6. I don't trust the new 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder turbos on the Toyotas. Trucks also built in Mexico and are already having issues. Overpriced, not reliable, and not built to last. No thank you Toyota!
Previous Tacomas were built in Mexico…but the 4 and 6 cylinders have been around for decades. I’ll be buying the new Tacoma and can’t wait! What issues have you seen?
have you not seen the recalls on the engines blowing up? I work in a Toyota shop and have seen 2 in two weeks , new engines needing major overhaul because of defects. What I am saying is pure facts. Nissan stays with what works and has been proven to work and be reliable which is the same thing Toyota used to do before they started changing everything for the sake of pushing the green new deal environment crap. Their new cars are much worse. Nissan is doing better in 1.price 2. Reliability 3. Warranty 4. Value (bang for buck). I can buy a comparable Nissan with taxes and fee’s included cheaper than buying a comparable Toyota, and I don’t sacrifice any reliability. Now if you want the tacoma because its pretty then I will not argue with you I am just talking facts. Price, value and reliability.
Buy what you want and what you’ll enjoy. I’ll be buying a Tacoma as I know several owners with them and have no issues. Yeah some have had problems and there’s plenty of videos showing it’s a handful, not the masses. But any vehicle from any company can change problems. Have a nice day..

My only complaint about this video is the fact that tail end of the video you did not mention more of the bigger engine in the Nissan frontier. As far as having more horsepower looks like that it’s gonna have more towing capacity. That’s the only good thing that I see on the whole video that Nissan has. I think Tacoma has the best record of longevity on the road dependability and the guy said at the end of the video before he did not mention anything about the Nissan engine is the trail riding capability of the Tacoma I think overall the Tacoma looks much better, except for like the guy said the plastics, several videos are all saying the same thing. The only thing Nissan has a bigger engine. However, the best thing that Toyota has a more dependable engine lol so I guess what I’m saying is, I’ll see you Nissan drivers on the side of the road when I passed you by.
I don’t do a lot of ‘trucking’ stuff, but more an offroad type coming from a wrangler. Personally I prefer all that torque coming on at 1700rpm than having to wring out a v6 like the pentastar in my jeep, better than horsepower imho
I mentioned towing capacity and engine specs in this video. As of now most people are saying the V6 in the Nissan is more reliable than the 4 cylinder in the Toyota. We'll have to see how well the turbo engine can last. But Nissan people seem to say the V6 is pretty strong like the old V6 from the last gen Tacoma
I'm confused as to why any midsized pickup owner would want a full LCD guage cluster, as opposed to an analogue speedometer and tachometer. In addition, those giant touch screens in the center are ridiculous. They take your eyes off the road, and they're more difficult to operate than knobs and tactile buttons. Truck steering should feel like truck steering. I own a 2011 Xterra Pro-4X, and the steering is one if the best aspects. The 2nd Gen Xterra and 2nd Gen Frontier are the same basic vehicle. My Xterra drives like a sports car. No one is ever going to sell me on electronic power steering. That's just another new technology that will fail.

100 % right ! as a mechanic and my son is a master mechanic we have seen that, tubro 4s in heavy truck applications are under alot of stress and wear out much faster than say a tried and true V6/8.

@@aidenarkham yup, and? My brother sold his 3rd gen to buy the 4th gen. Has more power than the V6 too..
Tacoma is almost $10,000 more than the Nissan 4pro x right now.
Depends on the trim for sure. But a high spec Tacoma is a a solid $55k these days
I'm honestly shocked that any pickup owner would choose electronically powered steering.
I have the 2025 Pro X, no problem with the steering and actually like it @ 68 yo. Anyone complaining is a weenie.
There's a difference between complaining and just pointing out how much heavier the steering is than all the other trucks in this class. As someone who drives multiple cars a day, the Frontier has heavy steering like my Lamborghini. No other car has that heavy of steering. So it's very noticeable and different from modern vehicles

Frontier steering incredibly heavy what an exaggeration, for me I love it like your driving a vehicle not steering a vehicle 🚗
Just MHO.
Anyone who says steering is to heavy my need to hit the gym. I like the way it drives I can feel the road and what the truck is doing.
Both great trucks that each have their high and lows when compared side by side and you cannot go wrong with either. Buy the one you want.
Yeah for sure. Tacoma is a step up overall tho if you can justify the over $50k price tag on a nicely equipped one
Both are great options!
Frontier is a much better value!!!
Why?
Frontier all the way, about to scoop one up later this month! The frontier seems to be the more dependable when it's coming to reliability right now. That v6 is gonna be so much more better heading into the next 10 years. Maybe when the technology gets better that 4 cylinder can be fine but for it to be in a truck and it be that expensive no thanks. Loved tacomas all my life and wanted one for so long but no that I'm finally able to get a truck I'm getting that v6 just because it's gonna be cheaper to maintain longterm 🎉

What a joke, the sport is more off road capable? This review seems very biased for the Tacoma.
What did you think after taking both offroad?? The PRO4X needs a lift and better clearance overall..
The new automatic transmission in the '24 Tacoma would have been great in the 2016-2023 model. Would have solved a lot of issues.
Regearing helped as well, my brother did that, but yeah, atleast Toyota fixed it now.
I’ve always liked the in dash touch screen over the tablet look
Yeah looks very clean
Its funny how torque can make something feel quicker than it is. Car and Driver has the Tacoma at 0-60 in 7 seconds vs 7.3 for the Frontier.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed You don't drive around town WOT everywhere?!
But yeah, very true.
Exactly :)
Reminds me of my 2005 Titan Off Road. The Frontier is essentially a mini Titan. Wish they would offer an access cab or single cab, bigger brakes and wheels, and a full length running board.
Yeah it's a mini Titan for sure. I think they off access cabs
Not buying a turbo engine I don’t think I could feel confident for longevity even a Toyota just saying
We'll have to see how well it stacks up!
A turbo is a way to compensate for a 4 cylinder engine. It will not run without it i.e. if it fails and it is expensive to replace. Change my mind.
@@anthonypropst1818 what’s your ownership experience been like? Or just a speculation? I’ll be buying one in the next few months!
I test drove a new one and did notice the "heavy" steering. It wouldn't have been a problem for me. I have a 2012 and the turning radius is a joke, simply the worst. I also had a 1994 P/U and the turning radius was horrible as well, but I have adjusted my driving to that.
Yeah you definitely get used to it over time
I wonder how the resale values compare.
We’ll have to see, the new Tacoma is still being sold new lol
How many miles can the Frontier go with any major issues Im leaning towards buying one next year. I have a WK2 I want to sell next year, Jeep has lost me as a customer they purposely make things cheap to earn money on repairs and parts.

I totally get the back seats on the frontier not being the best. But I also grew up with the old rangers that had folding seats that faced the middle of the truck. Frontier all the way for me. Only way to make it better would be if you could get it with a manual
You can get a manual Tacoma 😁
you were slouching in the back seat of the tacoma lol and it was way more tight in the back
No I wasn’t, The Tacoma has more room. Frontier is a bit cramped.

It’s nice but way to heavy for tight spots, like a three point turn, radius isn’t as good as other mid size trucks.
all they have to was to leave the NA V6

Your review comes across with a bias to the Tacoma. I just test drove both trucks. The Frontier felt peppier, was better fit and finish and the hood didn’t flutter going over crosswalks, was significantly cheaper and doesn’t have a history of melting its transmission. Guess which truck I bought?

Nice truck!
Tbh all the new “fancy interior” will be outdated in less than 5 years so I really like how analog the Nissan is
What’s “fancy” about it? I disagree. Nissan is way outdated already.
The gauge cluster is a preference, just because you don't like it, doesn't mean everyone has to dislike it...and the screen doesn't take your eyes off the road, and it's extremely easy and simple to use. and enjoy what you want too.
I would sacrifice those faux back seats for more bed length.

I never blocked you, you are commenting now…if you were blocked that wouldn’t happen..no one blocked you..what facts?
@@BrosFOURRSpeed ok I guess I don’t get blocked but I wasn’t allowed to respond to you for some reason. But the facts are there if you look. Its ok you you choose not to see it. I commented for the people to see not to try and change your mind.
@@AnthonysResurrectionGarage would you like to elaborate? Just saying the word facts means nothing…
@@BrosFOURRSpeed dude, do a little research and compare it to what I said
buy what makes you happy and what you’ll enjoy..
I prefer a trouble free, naturally aspirated engine
What trouble does the 4 cylinder have? What’s your experience been like?
@@BrosFOURRSpeed unless it’s turbo charged not enough power in a pick up. They’ve been problems with turbo charged engines recently. The turbo charged Tacoma doesn’t have a track record yet, but it will be interesting to watch. I expect it to be better than most just because it’s Toyota but I’m old-school not gonna take that chance until I see.
@@dannybryant6960 I agree with the lack of power with some 4 cylinders. But turbo 4’s have been around for years.
I know someone with 10k miles on their Tacoma and nothing major so far. I’ll be getting one so I can film everything about it! Should be solid.
Toyota is having way to many problems with their new trucks now, looking at you Tundra Recall !! and soon Tacoma tubro 4s. Its a no brainer buying the Nissan all the way now ! and I was a die hard Toyota fan. But as a mechanic I know what to buy and not to buy, Turbo 4s don't belong in trucks, they don't last under the strains/loads wears them out quickly, just watch. Makes me sad to see what Toyota did 😞
You realize turbo 4 cylinders have been around for decades in sportscar right? With no issues. It’ll be no different being in a truck.
What problems are with the new Tacoma? You have a link to it or you just saying that just because..
Just wish Frontiers where higher off griung like Toyotas are but Frontiers better truck
How is it better? Thats going to be subjective. I think the Toyota is better.
Nissan only automatic. Taco has a stick. Bought the Taco!!
Yeah definitely a great option!
The most lame review I have ever seen
Can you be specific?
Incerdably heavy ? proplw
e like youn should not do truck reviews woosy
What? Can you rephrase that with proper English?
Toyota tacoma made in Mexico with 4 banger..need i say more
And? Have you driven one?
@@BrosFOURRSpeed i traded in my 2019 V6 SR5 Tacoma for 2024 PRO X also V6 . y'all say what you want V6 better than the Mexican made 4 banger Taco.
Toyota has turned into an over priced and under delivering vehicle. Nissan is the new Toyota.
How so? I’m going Toyota over Nissan all day.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed Toyota quality has gone down while Nissan has gone up. Toyota prices have gotten out of control. The warranty on the Nissan beats Toyota by a long shot. I just got a Titan with 5 year 100,000 mile warranty bumper to bumper. Toyota just killed the 4 runner by making it hybrid only in 2025. You can still get a nice pathfinder with a very reliable non turbo V6. So 1. better price 2. Better warranty 3. Very similar reliability.
@@AnthonysResurrectionGarage just depends on what you want. I’d get the 4Runner over the Nissan any day.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed thats cool, I’m just stating facts though not opinion
@@AnthonysResurrectionGaragequality hasn’t gone down, prices have gone up slightly with a lot of the infrastructure of the vehicle and new designs. But Nissan hasn’t done anything which is why they cost less. But not all what you said is facts, some is a personal opinion and depends on what the buyer wants.
I just bought my Nissan Frontier V6 engine and I💜🧡love🩵💚my🛻truck🛻.
Great option to go with!
Put in a manual transmission and single turbo than Frontier can compete with Silverado 2.7L turbo
That'd be an interesting setup!
Want turbo in Frontier ?! Replace with Nissan GTR motor in it than you better hanging on , you going to replace transmission every 100k miles 😂😂😂
That'd be a wild build!
