It’s easy for me. I’m now a righty that plays lefty on a righty drum kit. So whenever I play other musician’s songs, it’s hard for me to play righty. So I guess I’m now a lefty at drums 😂
I’ve come to realize Ringo really was and is the purest heart of the Beatles. He manifested the joy of their music through his playing, spirit, and positive attitude towards his bandmates.
There is more to his ability than just being left handed. He was doing it his own way and creating things without a big ego and just doing the best he could. He has such a great intellect.
I saw another interview with Ringo and he explained how being naturally left handed and playing right handed causes him to have a different rhythm to his drum rolls. He stated he has a slight delay in his left hand (if I remember correctly) because he tries to not cross over his hands/sticks when he begins the roll. It's like he said here he leads right handed on a high to low tom/drum roll which isn't natural for him, and he goes low to high tom it is natural because his left hand leads and is his dominant hand. That's why he is difficult to mimic.
@@DJcool-tr1tk Yeah, I’m so used to playing it like that, it feels uncomfortable switching 😂. My wrist technique on my right hand is forced to improve though, which helps for other percussion instruments :)

@@CrazyAboutVinylRecords You can think anything. I love Beatles and recognize there are very famous drum lines of him, but as a drummer, he is pretty much replaceable.
@@Nothing-db1zy Your opinion is very much out of step with the established consensus on Ringo's skill as a drummer. He is on a lot of top 50 drummers of all time lists from publications like Dummer and Drumeo. And there are plenty of great drummers who also rate Ringo as a great drummer. Forgive me if I give their opinion considerably more weight than some random guy on UA-cam who has an issue with Ringo. I can't think of a single musician who is universally admired as great. I'm sure there are people out there who think that John Bonham and Keith Moon aren't particularly great drummers. And I pretty much would dismiss their opinion out of hand just like I am dismissing yours. Your're "I'm right and everyone else is wrong" mentality doesn't cut it. Toodles.
He was the secret ingredient that made these four Liverpudlians into The Beatles whom we all (literally around the world -- not just in the U.S. and U.K.) came to love. Had they not met him in Berlin when they had and asked him to replace their existing drummer, they might not have gotten as big as they did and impacted global pop culture like they did. The international pop music landscape might very likely look and sound a lot different than it does today
Im a lefty and I learned to play right handed. It has served me well. I toured with two platinum artists over the last 25 years. Do what is most comfortable for you.
For years, I could not understand why I had so much trouble playing "Come Together," "Ticket to Ride," and "Tomorrow Never Knows." Then, I found out Ringo was playing a righty kit lefty.
Most people I come across who call themselves left-handed are actually mixed-handed. A true left or right-handed person does all the main tasks with the left or the right, but most I come across do some things with one and other things with the other. For example, I knew a girl who wrote left-handed but played guitar right-handed. That made her a mixed-handed person. I'm a mixed-handed person myself. True lefties are far rarer than people realise. And of course, the ambidextrous are even rarer.
For the mixed-handed thing, often left-handers are simply taught that there is no alternative to the right-handed method. For instance there is no such thing as a left-handed piano. Even for instruments like guitars where there is some limited options for left-handedness, it's often discouraged for left-handers who are told that it doesn't matter or that it'll make other things like reading tabs or buying accessories more limiting. All of this is just to say that unless we're talking about something intrinsic like throwing a ball, a lot of strictly left-handed people are forced to use instruments and appliances with their right hands.
Drummers can play spot on recreations of Ringo's parts on old Beatles songs. You can even hear a lot of them here on UA-cam. But they will also tell you it's very difficult to get them spot on correct because of the left handedness of it all.
Lennon used to be dismissive of Ringo but his solo work seemed to change his opinion. A session drummer once worked with Lennon and Lennon had lots of hand-picked musicians to work with. But he became frustrated that the drummer couldn’t play the way Lennon wanted to, to the point where Lennon yelled, “Just play it like Ringo!”. .
Ringo is the greatest. He's definitely not the typical octopus on the drums - he just sings about its garden -, but STILL he's the greatest. His way and style of drumming, his feel to it, is more definite and relevant than Paice's, Powell's, Palmer's, Krupa's, Rich's, you name them... ...and why is this? I'm not sure, but I think it is because when we listen to Ringo, there is just something so NATURAL, so pleasing.
@ric66fb YOU Just told everyone YOU know nothing about what not only drumming but in fact just about everything musical would be today had it never been for the band Ringo played in, without actually saying so. Think about it.
Ringo is THE definitive drummer (As was Charlie Watts, Rolling Stones) They played TO THE SONGS not overtaking them, MASTERS of their craft! Ringo did NOT like drum solos FOR REASONS. For all of the fame John and Paul get, Ringo and George are my favorite Beatles. And that's a hard choice because The Beatles are the BEST band in modern history. People will STILL be listening to The Beatles 100 years from now. I have a "Gen Z" niece who loves The Beatles!
This is a great lesson for anyone who thinks they won't be able to make music because of a disability or missing digit etc. Think about Toni Iommi or Jerry Garcia, to name just a few who were all the more distinctive because of their "imperfections"
Growing up, Ringo was always portrayed - to me - as the clown and as a joke. "Oh, Ringo wrote a song. Let's put it on the fridge." And so forth. I loved him on shining time station as a boy. I always liked and looked up to Ringo and never understood the disrespect. When the Beatles Rock Band came out, I got the collector's edition so I could play the drums and "be like Ringo." The older I got, the more Ibrespect and "love" the man [platonically].
Bonham was also lefty. Part of why his triplets sounded like they did by leading with the left. A lot of his fills would also start with a single 5/4 bar played 1 tick too early. That "extra" tick was enough to get his left hand out of the way for a more traditional sounding fill.
I love how the drummer stereotype is so accurate. No matter their country of origin, their accent or background, every drummer is a spazz deep down inside 😂 You just know it when you hear them talk. Drummers are a whole different breed when it comes to musicians.
