I had a 1988 924 S, which produced 160hp (the last year had the most power). Pop-up lights and a real momentium b-roader. A fantastic thing.

The original 2.0 block had an amazing history, it actually originally was a Daimler Benz block finding it's way into Horch, NSU, Audi, VW, AMC and many others that I've forgotten

We've had one of these for nearly 9 years (in glorious crystal green) and we love it so much! My little rebellion against owning a modern car. I'd just treated myself to an Alfa Giulietta - poshest, newest, most expensive car we'd ever had and I hated it! Blooming computer on wheels. To be fair it is a very nice car and himself is still enjoying it to this day but the deal was "Sod this, it's just not me - you can have it and I'm getting summat daft again!" And when I realised that for the same money as it would cost me to get another proper old VW Scirocco, I could have a 2.5 litre Porsche... Get in! Never forget the test drive, for some reason I let him do that and within a couple of minutes he was grinning ear to ear and saying "Oh yes, you are going to love this!" 'His Knibs' was my daily drive to start with but jobs changed and hubby got precious about him - decided he should never be driven on salty roads or left unattended in work car parks... So now we just tax him for 6 months and take him out for Sunday drives and trips with the owners club. Shame really because you are right, it is a very practical, affordable, driveable classic. Loved watching your face as you drove it - just makes you grin doesn't it?! 😁 Can't imagine ever parting with our little beauty 💚

My 924S was a lock down treat, which I fully expected to move on pretty quickly. Here we are four years later and I love it & the car is going no where. I am looking forward to a shakedown run if it ever stops raining in the UK in the 'summer' of 2024 (after fitting a new genuine Porsche radiator). 🙂

The design is so pure and clean, it's simply timeless. I think it even got more desirable over the years. That's what good design is all about. I wonder if I will say this in 30 years about the new BMW M2...
You should have driven the 924 up to Worcestershire Beacon, would have been a stunning view from there with that weather conditions.

The 924 was one of my favourites back in the day. I liked it better than the 944 because to my mind, a sports car should look lightweight, and the 944 with its skirts didn't. I did like the 944's hips though.
Relatedly, I _hated_ the Vauxhall Calibra with a passion! It was a massive slab-sided prize porker with the headlights to prove it.

The 924 started with the Audi 100 engine , although the revised head was apparently re worked by Porsche. Later they had the 924 Turbo which obviously a flyer but with the inevitable turbo lagg. About 1980/1 they produced a 924 Carrera GT which was a homologation special and exceedingly rare today. The 944 was similar looking to the earlier GT but featured the bored out 2.5 litre engine which you had in the 924S which you had there, Geoff. The unique thing was it had only 4 cylinders , which was unusual for this capacity , but Porsche incorporated counter balance shafts which gave it uncanny smoothness for a big 4 pot , almost like an in line 6 . The dash is always a problem on these when left in the sun . I believe there are kits now to repair them .

Discs all round were always standard on the S. It was more 944 in a 924 body. Front suspension was 924 but with 944 hubs and brakes. Rear was 944 (alloy) semi trailing arms and (disc) brakes.
Mine is earlier (150bhp in Europe). Last year it had 160bhp.
Gearbox was an Audi transaxle of course.

OMG ! - Brilliant review, Brilliant car, I owned one of these in the early 90s , in that same colour and spec, Baltic blue, linen interior . I stupidly part exchanged it for a boring economy car as I was moving in with a girl who lived miles away from my work, biggest mistake ever both selling the car and moving in with the girl. God , I miss that 924S.👍👍

When I was growing up I lusted after a Skyline, 300ZX and a 3000GT, not a Porsche 911 that at the time looked very dated and old fashioned. However the 928 still looked like the car to beat, I admit that.

My parents owned 2 ordinary 924 models. The bog standard one and the lux. The latter was black and we acquired it around about the time Knight Rider came out, so many sticky children's fingers all over the paintwork! We were offered a 924s model when it came out as a trade in, but my father said it just didn't feel the same, plus it came in an awful pinstripe cloth trim, which my mother hated, so we stuck with the old one for another 30 years and 200k plus miles. I would love to own another, but only in my dreams!😢

Unfortunately that is the way car companies have to operate now. The Cayenne saved Porsche when it came out as they weren't making very much money. Although it's a shame they have turned to making SUV's it means they can continue to make special versions of the 911 and cars like the 918 from the profits.

I'm sure it was exposed to salted roads every year when it was new. We didn't have grit "like they use on the Continent" in the 80s. Some people used to hose down the underside of their car.

@@eekee6034 Not sure what youy mean by "grit"? Hosing down? yea, sure, it does something but it is hardly going to even reverse the real damage by more than a few percent. The salt gets inside the chassis and frame, all through the intricacies that a hose will never reach. Salt and proper cars should never mix IMO.

I've read coffee grinds are also very effective, as well as obviously being environmentally beneficial vs damage done to the environment with salt. I'm sure a combination of different options and technologies could easily eliminate or nearly eliminate salt use.
