Women wear differently as over rt shoulder ears on other shoulder, they did need to other shoulder as they did not need to draw long sword over rt. Only a clan chieftans and daughters of colonel daughters and wives wore over same shoulders on same side as men
just awesome how multifunctional everything was in a old times, one piece of material is covering his ass, keeps him warm at night, protects him from rain and all the time looks badass.
I think it’s cool because my best friend is of Scottish decent, and he loves everything about his roots. He’s the one who told me a master kilt is nine yards. Hence the old saying, “the whole nine yards.” Way to go! I’m so glad I have friends who share their heritage with me. Thank you so much for the video!
The whole nine yards has nothing to do with the kilt, it's origin is American and is only just over a century old, nobody knows it's full true origin but nowhere does it mention kilts in any way shape or form. The plaid itself is 4-5 yards too so no idea where he got that nonsense from.
Andy is a FANTASTIC guide! I HIGHLY recommend him! A genuinely friendly person who loves people and Scotland. He lives Scottish history and culture. He fitted me out on our two day trip with him in this plaid. You will learn the plaid is MUCH more than what most know as a "kilt"...
I recently bought the Clan Cochrane ancient plaid the whole 9 yards. It took me 3 times to get it on right. Your video really helped me learn the right way. An American girl traveled to Scotland to visit the land of her ancestors. She met a burly highlander and asked him Is it true you don’t wear any underwear under your kilt? The highlander said why don’t you stick your hand down there and find out. She put her hand under his kilt and cried it’s so grewsome! He replied eye lass and if you put your hand down there again it will grew some more!
Did you also hear about the Scotsman who was roaring drunk and on his way home from the pub on Saturday night pitched onto the side of the road and passed out. A woman passed him on her way to church on Sunday morning and seeing him exposed took a blue ribbon from her hair and wound it around his genitals to hide them. Some hours later when the fellow awoke and saw her handiwork he smiled and said "Laddie, I don't know where you've been but I'm sure glad to see you took first prize!"

tmj5girl not so, it depends where you go. There are plenty of folk wearing kilts around where I live in Aberdeenshire. From keepers and ghillies to guides and walkers. Add in the various Highland games and gatherings plus weddings, Burns suppers and dozens of other events, the kilt, both formal and informal, is worn.
Sadly it's not a common thing. Although you see plenty of kilts in Summer (wedding season) the majority of kilts are not made or formed this way they are pre-made and handed down, rented or bought for a small fortune in kilt shops. They are also worn mid knee. Are tied at the side with leather buckle straps and secured with a pin at the front. high socks, sporran, shirt waistcoat dress military style jacket and dress shoes and tie are all part of the outfit It looks incredibly smart. What this guy is wearing is like something from a historic reenactment.
Don't be sucked in by the kilt Scots men can be as equally great or crappy as men anywhere else in the world. Jamie Fraser is the exception not the rule.
I watch the first couple minutes of this to make sure that it was what I was looking for, and then showed it to my wife because she was looking for skirt ideas. And you had to go and moon her.
@@slaywell1110 : I went to Scotland 5 times. I would have run off with any man wearing a kilt with a Border Collie by his side. CH33K1_BR33K1 K1NG As someone who wears a kilt multiple times a week I can tell you that’s not really true. Sure, not wearing underwear can be really nice and I do it when hiking, around the house, in the garden, druving, getting groceries... You get the point. But whenever I’m in a more social setting like parties and birthdays or when there’s kids around I opt to wear a pair of boxers. The same is true for really windy and cold days. In those occasions I put on a pir of merino wool boxer briefs. Also, you don’t have to wash your kilt as often when wearing underwear.

I've noticed quite a few questions about the yardage required for a great kilt. I'm sure Andy will correct me if I'm wrong, so here goes. The hand looms that the tartan was woven on produced cloth about 30" wide. The nine yards of tartan was cut in half, and the halves were sewn together to produce a tartan 4 1/2 yards long by 60" wide. Modern looms produce cloth 60" wide, so 9 yards of modern tartan is enough for 2 kilts.Since I stand 6' 10", I've considered producing a 120" wide kilt. Also, when asked what I wear beneath the kilt, I tell them to look for themselves.... My Boots!
Such a great video, especially the last demonstration of how it's pulled over the shoulder. I never knew how they did that. Such an AWESOME and versatile piece of clothing! My husband wears his kilts a lot, but I think the next step is to wear the full plaid as a kilt. Great video! Thanks!

Well a Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair, and one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share. He fumbled 'round until he could no longer keep his feet, then he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street. About that time two young and lovely girls came tappin' by, and one says to the other, with a twinkle in her eye, "See that sleeping Scotsman, so strong and handsome built? I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt..."
They snuck up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be, and lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see, and THERE BEHOLD FOR THEM TO VIEW BENEATH HIS SCOTTISH SKIRT was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth They marveled for a moment, then one said "We must be gone. Let's leave a present for our friend, before we move along. As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow, around the body part the Scot's kilt did lift and show.
The Scotsman woke to natures call and stumbled towards the trees, behind a bush, he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees, and in a startled voice, he says to what's before his eyes "Lad, I don't know where you've been but I see you've won first prize!"

That's what I love on UA-cam. I was nonchalantly searching for something to watch then saw the video. Watched it and enjoyed it. If I have to wear a plaid one day, I'll be ready !

Not to ruin the vibe, but it's been going viral, we all get it recommended. It's been 11 hours since you posted that, there's a system.
I would have to choose which clan kilt to wear as Clan McClellan , clan Crawford are my great parents familys. Also so Black watch, thru the line , tho they were reak scoundrals. Tykes, really.
@@scottneil1187 I have my opinion as do you, so you can have yours and I’ll have mine.
The whole nine-yards refers to the length of a belt of machine-gun ammo in WWI, or so I was told. It may also be a fake origin.
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing. And a fine arse too!!
Shameless !!

Next door neighbours: "what's he up to now?" "he's in his pants again, rolling around on a huge blanket..."
I'm sure his neighbors know what a kilt is and have seen many people putting them on before. They probably think its a normal day in the neighborhood.
It’s not common to wear kilt regularly in Scotland. I would know I am part scottish and was in Scotland last year not once did I see man wearing kilt regularly . It’s only worn for special events and Highland games now days . Only people I saw in kilt was Andy or other tour guides not all were Scottish men two of them were born Italians given tours for Globus company .
Kilts were invented before the ironing board.
Rolling around on the ground presses down the plaits... 😉
There is nothing like having a man standing in all his glory about to wrap himself in a kilt!!! This is why I want to move to Scotland!!!

tmj5girl not so, it depends where you go. There are plenty of folk wearing kilts around where I live in Aberdeenshire. From keepers and ghillies to guides and walkers. Add in the various Highland games and gatherings plus weddings, Burns suppers and dozens of other events, the kilt, both formal and informal, is worn.
Kilt on windy day is fun
Sadly it's not a common thing. Although you see plenty of kilts in Summer (wedding season) the majority of kilts are not made or formed this way they are pre-made and handed down, rented or bought for a small fortune in kilt shops. They are also worn mid knee. Are tied at the side with leather buckle straps and secured with a pin at the front. high socks, sporran, shirt waistcoat dress military style jacket and dress shoes and tie are all part of the outfit It looks incredibly smart. What this guy is wearing is like something from a historic reenactment.

There’s usually not much glory.
So fun! These kilts are so much more attractive than the little ones they wear today.
This video made me very happy 💞
Gee, I wonder why.
I've always thought men in kilts were manly...and now I can confirm it. I need a Scottish guy
Don't be sucked in by the kilt Scots men can be as equally great or crappy as men anywhere else in the world. Jamie Fraser is the exception not the rule.

As someone who wears a kilt multiple times a week I can tell you that’s not really true.
The kilt is so stunning. It makes so much sense, all of it’s functional uses. I love your familie’s plaid, very beautiful. Thank you!
It's an outlander tartan not his family tartan
@@miked4152 I am a US citizen new to all things Scottland. I am currently reading Medieval books set in Scotland and I see a lot written about the different family tartans. My question is what is the difference between the 2 you mention?
@@sosolin100 the Outlander tartan is a tartan thats from the TV show Outlander which that tartan was stolen from a different family tartan and colors were changed to make the Outlander version. He has his own tartan im sure but it's not the Outlander one that he's wearing in the video. The Outlander tartan is only as old as the series. Best no sewing hack ever! I'm wearing all my skirts with this method.
My Boots!
Nice image 😉

Such a great video, especially the last demonstration of how it's pulled over the shoulder. I never knew how they did that. Such an AWESOME and versatile piece of clothing! My husband wears his kilts a lot, but I think the next step is to wear the full plaid as a kilt. Great video! Thanks!
Incredible! I wondered how the entire thing went together to get that look. I was interested in how the back was brought up to go on the shoulder and that it’s just one long piece of fabric (plaid). Thank you.
On a Scotsman could do a UA-cam vid with nothing on his bottom half and be totally chill with it. By Odin's beard, I love that place!!

I’m from the Middle East, but I’m really fascinated by the Scottish customs, clothing, weapons, traditions, and their highland games! The genius of the the garmet that is a kilt. Shown to us by a handsome and humorous man who most importantly answered for us the question of what a true Scotsman wears under his kilt! Great video.
Wonderful thank you from a Scottish Diaspora in Australia ! Our Clan Chief Sir William MacPherson TD (Cluny) just recently passed away and I’m sad this has driven me a connection in going forward with our new Chief Jamie MacPherson, his son
Well a Scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair,
and one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share.
He fumbled 'round until he could no longer keep his feet,
then he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street.
About that time two young and lovely girls came tappin' by,
and one says to the other, with a twinkle in her eye,
"See that sleeping Scotsman, so strong and handsome built?
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt..."
They snuck up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be,
and lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see,
and THERE BEHOLD FOR THEM TO VIEW BENEATH HIS SCOTTISH SKIRT
was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth
They marveled for a moment, then one said "We must be gone.
Let's leave a present for our friend, before we move along.
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow,
around the body part the Scot's kilt did lift and show.
The Scotsman woke to natures call and stumbled towards the trees,
behind a bush, he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees,
and in a startled voice, he says to what's before his eyes
"Lad, I don't know where you've been but I see you've won first prize!"

Just found this video on "How to Wear Plaid." You are quite humorous! And just plain cute!! You made me smile and then laugh with the "wee bit of the bum." Thanks for that!
I never knew nor imagined that the fabric wasn't sewed to keep that shape nor that it required so many steps, but I think it is way better like that. Great explanation, I loved it even if as a woman I can't wear one
P.S.: maybe is not very classy of me to mention, but what a lovely bum
If you want a women’s version, try an arisaid! It’s longer and worn over the dress, that’s pretty much the only difference
Just like mustache_man said, the Earasaid is literally a "1 for 1 copy" with the slight difference of being slightly longer just to cover the legs more, its honestly a wonderful clothing piece to try on, especially because of how easy it is to do. (literally just buy a nice fabric + belt at any store, or be an adventuring soul and use a curtain like another comment said... cant guarantee is works!)
Modern kilts are sewn but this shows a traditional 18th century plaid.
Idk why I was recommended this, but I’m not even disappointed
In Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia , we do have the same thing as plaid but we called sarong or samping . They wore by men and also has " codes" the way we wore them . if its above your knees it means you're single and if you covered your knee means you're married. we wore them on special occasion like on weddings, national day and festive sessions.
