I recently purchased a kilt to celebrate my Scottish and Welsh ancestry, boy did I struggle getting it to fit correctly the first time. Your video was GREAT! Thanks for the fitting tips.
Just watched your video. very good... But... Here (over the pond) in Scotland. The best way to make sure that your kit is sitting right has it's hard to see it. Is the A: have a large mirror to dress in front of. B: Go on your knee's. It SHOULD sit 2 inches above your knee. It does not matter about how high it is above your belly button has no one will see the top of your kilt has you will have a vest and jacket over it. (Some people have a shorter trunk than others. But we should all look / dress the same). But everyone will see how high it is above your knee. Your belt trick I have never seen before. But I tried it.... Dam it works! Wearing the belt with a vest has always been open to many, many, many long talks. And when there are long talks, there is drinking involved (I've seen some of your other video's. So you know where I am on this). And has a clansman. I hope this will be a long conversation for years to come. When you wear a vest you don't need to have the belt. It will not be seen that much. But people do wear it with their vest has later in evening they know that they will be having a `long conversation´ way into the night and at some point the vest will be off. The other thing is when wearing a full dress sporran. A full dress sporran is a little bigger and has metal at the top and this can bang on the belt when sitting down. So this is more of a personal thing. You are spot on with how to set-up your sporran chain!! But there are so many that still don't know this. The holes at the back of the kilt are for the belt, this is why it is of a large size it fit the belt. And of cause we pass the sporran chain there also. Spot on with the kilt pin. I have seen so many try and put it into both layers.
This is JUST in time. The largest Highland games in North America is set for the 21st of this month. I'm told there will be multiple vendors attending, which means a great opportunity for shopping.
I was actually born in Edinburgh but don't have a clue even though I have worn the outfit a few times before. When it's the morning of the wedding and I am breaking out in a cold sweat this will be a calm lifesaver. 1,000,000 thanks!
Awesome video and tutorial! Been wearing a kilt for 3+ years and I have to send this to a friend that wanted to start wearing a kilt after he saw me wearing them.
Fantastic guide for new and or experienced alike. I've been a drummer in a pipe band for decades and still learned some useful tricks from this. Thank you.
I was instructed 40 years ago when buying my first pair of ghillie brogues that you should tie your laces on the outside of your leg. This was to stop them being a problem during energetic entertainments.😊
I've been wearing a kilt for longer than I care to remember, the kilt belt fitting and sporran tips were new to me and will now be part of my routine. Thanks
Thank you for this outstanding presentation. I've been wearing Utilikilts for years but I recently inherited a (new/unused) dress kilt with all the accessories and I have no clue how to put it all together. Now I'm ready. Thank you.
Glad it's helped you! And if you're local to the Philadelphia area, USAKilts is hosting a pop up shop with Utilikilts on Jan 2nd from 2-5 at our shop! Join us to chat, browse some cool new product, and just hang out :)
A little note for kilt pin placement, I usually like to have the pin sit on an intersection of the horizontal and vertical lines near the corner of the apron. I find that having it sit on an intersection helps draw the eye to it, and it just feels right in my mind.
Great wee video, look very sharp Rocky. One of the best videos I've seen to show folks who've never worn a kilt before, love the attention to detail. Great work.
OMG. This is exactly what I needed. I was tripping on where the kilt should sit on the body. I didnt realize that the waist was meant to ride that high. I thought it was meant to sit around the hip bone. ...Well that just totally fixes my confusion. Thank you so much!!
Wish this was around when I started with the band! Great tip to put chain over buckle. Additional tip: on kilt pin, a small safety pin on the inside can make sure it doesn’t unhook and fall off when traveling in cars.
I liked the tip for easy sizing of the kilt belt. I hadn't thought of doing it that way before. I do usually put my kilt belt through the sporran loops, makes it feel (to me) a bit more secure.
Now as a Scotsman you need to review the extension buckle for the kilt as we get old perhaps the waist fluctuates 😮 It is more cost effective than a new kilt by far .... worth reviewing for those that have given up wearing but don't know an alternative.
Rocky Sir, you have just done a wonderous thing this day. Removing the mistery and fear relating to Kilt wearing that a great many men have, not least the mysteries regards to what is under the kilt. A huge thank you from England.
Good day, first off awesome videos. I have a new black semi formal sporran and wear the McLeod of Lewis Tartan. I noticed the black dye from the sporran transferred to my kilt. Is this common? I was shocked. I wiped the back of the sporran with a white cloth and see black. Is there something I can apply to the sporran to stop this transfer? Thank you from Canada.
No, it should be the same if you're wearing the same length kilt as the men. I believe the idea is to have a clean uniform appearance. There may be a few differences in the jackets cut, but you'd still put it on the same ... I say with no experience piping.
For a special reason I would need to have the kilt length to be no higher than the bottom of the knee. (No option to wear it much higher than that, so please do not suggest that option.) Realizing that it would not be an ideal length, how bad would that length look?
I like where you pulled your kilt pin from. I keep mine in my sporran as well! (along with my hose...) However, I do pin both layers, to keep my kilt closed. Is that bad?
NOT recommended. If you pin the aprons together, it creates a small risk of a tear if your apron catches on a doorknob or a chair arm. It likely won't happen, but if it does it could be disastrous. Also, you want the kilt to be able to flex and move. The aprons should not perfectly overlap at all times, they should be able to move against each other and spread when you sit down or take long strides.
It's believed there's a historic precedence for pinning both aprons together, but that's inferred from looking at photos from the turn of the last century, where we see kilt pins being worn much higher (like in the mid-thigh area). You wouldn't want to pin through both aprons in the position where they're typically worn today, as mentioned by Ian, you're at a much higher risk of tearing the fabric if you suddenly find yourself needing to be very athletic. These days, the kilt pin is sort of an optional wind weight that keeps the front apron from flapping too much in the breeze, and is an accent piece.
No. The closure for a man's kilt is almost always affixed (typically straps and buckles) on the wearer's right side. Women's kilted skirts can close on either side (that's up to the maker). Roughly 2/3 close on the left and 1/3 close on the right.
+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the haberdasher reference.* The procedure can be adapted for my favored RESPONSE GEARⓇ boots, BlauerⓇ midshirts, diverse brand of flashes and Windsors, &c.

My! It's a ceremony!!!
Just a female appreciating the art of wearing a kilt. Super neat!

I have learned a lot about kilts from all the videos you produce. I never knew there was so much to learn about how to wear kilts.
A much improved and more detailed video than the one done in 1946, Rocky. those neat little tricks really do help. Very well done!

Thanks for the kind words. Glad the video was helpful!

I learned a couple of things through watching this video. Just when you think you know it all, you learn something new. Excellent video!

@@USAKiltsOfficial That would be awesome but Southern California is a bit of a stretch from Philadelphia.

Did a hand tying ceremony in skipness castle. Thank you for this video!
Glad it helped!
I just really appreciate this video. You've made it very straight forward and easy. Thank you!
Happy it helps!!

Glad it was helpful! :-)

I do that with the belt too as I find when I sit or bend, the belt rises and the kilt drops below the belt.
@@sgtkabukiman9411 same reason here. I like to keep it from shifting around too much.
Very helpful instructions and explanations.
Very nice 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Love from Sweden .
😯 Great tip for sizing the belt. I never thought of that. I have to adjust my belt for different kilts and this will make it much easier. Thanks!
Seriously, after spending a good 5-7 minutes of guessing where to adjust my belt to, this would have been a much simpler way to do it.
Now as a Scotsman you need to review the extension buckle for the kilt as we get old perhaps the waist fluctuates 😮 It is more cost effective than a new kilt by far .... worth reviewing for those that have given up wearing but don't know an alternative.
Thank you so much I really learned so much now I’m on my way
For the last 12 years, i have worn my laces a bit different.
I twist in the back and tie on the side. With a double knot.

Thank you 😊😊😊
Really enjoyed this
Kilt belts must be a relatively modern addition. I didn't start seeing them till the early 90s.
Well done Rocky!
Great video Thanks 🙏☘️

Thank you for this!
I think tie garters (for shooting socks) are more classy than flashes.
Depends on the person. For a big person, flashes are the better option, for a smaller person, both work well.
I don't know about always being classier, but they certainly look a lot better than poorly made flashes.
How would you reccommend wearing a sporran with a great kilt?
I may be wearing a kilt for our local pipe band someday, so are any of these directions different for women?
No, it should be the same if you're wearing the same length kilt as the men. I believe the idea is to have a clean uniform appearance. There may be a few differences in the jackets cut, but you'd still put it on the same ... I say with no experience piping.

I pin both layers, especially if it is a windy day. 🙂

I was taught 2 fingers width for the hose.
Now I want a kilt sooo badly 😂
Thank you my American friend
Thank you Sir!
Is there an issue with wear a belt and sporran together, formal dress? Thanks
It depends on what you pair it with; no vests and belts, etc.
Did I do something wrong if my kilt has only one belt on the right side? Because yours has two.
It depends on how your kilt is made!
@USAKiltsOfficial OK. Thanks.
Is it true that the kilt that is fixed on the right side is feminine?
No. The closure for a man's kilt is almost always affixed (typically straps and buckles) on the wearer's right side.
Women's kilted skirts can close on either side (that's up to the maker). Roughly 2/3 close on the left and 1/3 close on the right.
Every part of getting dressed except for apparently sexy getting dressed music.
Bow Chika Bow Wow!
Leave the kilts to the scots m8 . You do the laceless 6 time before pulling round the back . And what ur tartin?
I want a HOT ROD! tshirt with my kilt. Act ROWDY!!!!
As I said the wearing of a kilt is a ceremony.
Helpfull video to verify what I am doing is correct, but the background music is unnecessary & distracting
you forgot the fly plaid!!!!!!!!!!!
Could just wear regular square toe dress shoes and a suit jacket with shirt and vest with tie
My Dad wears bicycle shorts under his kilt...
Bet your gran loves that 🔥
ur packing king

A real kilt is not readymade like trousers or a shiirt. Its a draped blanket
Only thing you forgot to mention is the Scottish tradition that you’re not supposed to wear underwear underneath your kilt
