I had a 2009 DR650. I rode it about 40,000 miles before the bike reached that magical point where I was working on it more than I was riding it. It had a TM40 carb and full exhaust, big IMS gas tank, aftermarket Suzuki gel seat, (which I recommend) and a set of springs calibrated for my weight. I had some hard cases I cut out of 0.090" 3003 aluminum scrap and bent at work and pop-riveted together at home. It was on it's 3rd or fourth set of turn signals. I once rode it 100 miles to an enduro race, rode it in the race nearly killing myself about six times, and then rode it home. I got a wild hair up my ass when it had about 25k on it, and rebuilt the top end with larger valves and a J&E high compression piston. It really woke the bike up, it would pull 2nd and 3rd gear wheelies no problem. I enjoyed it more than any other bike I've had, and while it was cantankerous at times, I could always get it to run again.
Great bike! Super easy to work on. Turned mine into a supermoto. The TM42 carb will wake it up. Have a full exhaust and opened airbox. Classic bike when you want a simplistic motorcycle. A total blast to ride around town!
I had grips like that on my 2012 Yamaha Super Tenere. I installed a set of Grip Puppy's and they worked great. I also put a set of Heidenau K60 Scout tires on it, and loved those as well. Nice bike, that's for the review.
I got a new to me 2020 back in January. Love it, put over 3k on it already. Luckily, it already had all the major stuff already done, like seat, suspension, carb, exhaust, etc. Also had the Bajaworks screen. I had the same problem. I trimmed about 3 inches off the top. It made a big difference with banging my head around.
Sure love my new 2024 DR! Traded my 2019 Africa Twin even up for it. Love it more every day, looks just like yours! Do the stock carb & needle adjustments soon, if you haven't, it is a major improvement!! Do the carb related emissions removals too. I LOVE my seat and am able to tolerate trips up to 200 miles one way without issue. Tires, stock tires are just fine for me, must be because I am a seasoned rider (since 2020) Parabellum windscreen is a bit of an improvement. Just wearing a helmet without a peak solves most problems. Hang in there with the stock seat, I am used to it, and find it tolerable. I have a CRF300L too, but the DR blows it away.
Just bought one myself definitely want to upgrade things you mentioned, but I don’t mind waffle grips, considering I rode MX most of my life, but definitely a carburetor upgrade and exhaust some holes in the air box suspension, etc.
Check out cross training enduro UA-cam channel. They have great videos on how to wake up the beast. I rode the nebdr last fall on my dr650. It handled it with ease. I got hit by a car on the ride home and broke some bones and destroyed my bike. I'm about 80% healed and just bought a new tenere 700. It is a great bike with great features. I will be getting another dr650 when I can find one. It has a great analog feel to it and it is bomb proof. Do yourself a favor and pony up for a procycle seat, it was one of my favorite upgrades. Happy riding! Enjoy your awesome bike!!
I owned a 2015 DR650. Bought it brand new. Sold it after 5 years. Fantastic bike. Just wish it had a 6th gear. But i'll be buying another one next summer. Enjoy the ride!
You made the right choice! The 300/400s wont cut it long term for highway commuting. I really enjoy mine, and commute on it daily. Try the Maddog seat pad. I dont like how a windshield looks, but with the buffeting and cold of winter its a must. Im going to change needle postion and go up a size on main jet after my warranty is out. IF i change exhaust ill take off the pair valve to get rid of the popping and burbleing and excess heat from recirculating. Its bearable with stock but after market exhaust popping is loud! Mine actually started leaking at the valve inspections oring covers, so thats pretty common because of the heat. Hows the DR for you so far?
Great looking bike, i'm picking up a used one in a couple days with a bunch of mods, but I do want to lower the pegs. How was that process? what parts did you need?
Awesome, I’d highly recommend the DR650. The pro cycle foot pegs were pretty easy to install. You just have to move the shifter lever and rear brake lever. The kit came with everything needed except some loctite.
Hey dude, nice review. I live in SC too! Love this bike and the ONLY reason I have not got one is I really want a fuel injected bike because I'm not very mechanically inclined at tinkering with carbs. For those that are, it's no problem I know. My friend keeps telling me the future DR will have EFI for emissions reasons but who knows. I'm keeping my little KLX230 for now but still want a DR down the line. Not sure where you got this, but if you got it from Foothills, I may have actually sat on this bike when I was looking at it back in January. Ride safe and great bike!
I actually bought the bike from a dealer in NC, mainly because they were the closest with a 2023. According to them, it was still in the crate when I called. Enjoy the KLX!
I’ve gone on many years riding carb machines without tinkering when bought brand new!!! Had 1992 Honda 250X for 12 years never touch carb and wife had 1997 Honda Recon for 20 years and sold to my friend he took apart and surprisingly clean like new!!! He’s got ocd thingy when buy used toys carb must gone through ha!!! Also still have 1997 Polaris Trail Boss bought from my Dad in 2002 first time took carb apart after 20 years after first signs of fuel leak out, had my buddy look at it and he too surprised how clean it is inside like new!!! Turns out it was metal brass for floater to slide on became rough just smooth it out and good to go!!! I rode hard and all year long on all machines which I think it helps keep carb in good working order with out tinkering. I didn’t use any special additives, the fuel just normal one uses in my car all times. Only use machines you may had to tinkering from previous owner don’t ride it like I have used 1988 Honda 300 Four Trax 2WD atv I bought new China carb in it and had to tinker it from time to time haha!!!
@@markjeepingful Man that is very good information and experience to share, I appreciate the comment. Makes me feel better about carbed bikes now. I'm always seeing where people mess with them, re-jet etc so I guess I was thinking they always need work. Sounds like I was incorrect on that assumption.
Watching this review, nothing has really discouraged me from giving this bike attention. I want a bike that I can ride long distances on the 401 and 402, ride to work on 90km/h roads, go on rides with my Girlfriend in the back, and take on the dirt on trails and fields, and this bike seems to be pretty perfect
I live in pine ridge. I bought a Honda 300 rally in April. I had a dr 650 that I sold in 2013 because I bought a BMW Sertaou that I sold two years ago and I missed it. I like the six speed and FI on the Honda but it’s tall and really doesn’t have the power to run the speed limit on the interstate. I used my dr as a mini adventure tourer. I liked your video, why are you selling yours?
Sweet! Glad you liked the video. I don’t want to sell it and I do love the bike, we’re just reorganizing financially. I’ll probably just keep it now though.

I did the exhaust, ProCycle jet kit, removed snorkel and 14 tooth sprocket. Huge difference. No regrets.
What did the sprocket change do for you , thanks ?
Reading all over ya 14 way to go
@@bobclapper2672much more manageable at slower speeds without slipping the clutch.
What did you cover the snorkel hole with? Filter type layer?
I just got a white 2024 DR650! Love it. I would agree completely with your assessment. Enjoy.

Yes I need to do those mods, probably exhaust too. And maybe down a tooth in the front sprocket.
I bought a DR650 recently too . IM wanting to do similar things to my bike . Hope you put up more vids on your progress !

Check seat concepts. I did a larger rear sprocket but I have the 400
Being in Montana the first mod I did was an IMS tank. Seat is the next mod for you.
Procycle jet kit! Tusk dsport tires are great and cheap. I put a leovince pipe on mine and also had the suspension setup for my weight.

Hands hurt . Put a set of risers on the handle bars . It's probably too low, putting extra pressure on your hands . ✋️
hello from Japan
Very nice video!
Also I have recently got dr650se of 1997.
I am very excited.
If I upload new videos of dr650, please watch them.
