Special thanks to MXrob and the heroes at Drriders.com!
The same bike since '96, they sure do make'm like they used to. The DR650 might look like a tired ol’ pony but with enough wrenching, tastier parts, and a little help from the DR community, ol’ faithful can strangely start to look like the unicorn we’ve all been waiting for.

Drz400sm owner here. Suzuki has done the same thing with this bike as well and it seems to be a very similar community. Years of knowledge and RND from riders, lots of aftermarket options. I thought about a 650 myself before I bought my Drz, and decided I wanted to do some tighter single track and thats pretty much the deciding factor. I got a set of 21/18 wheels and it does good in the woods, ive done a 2500km tour on it in totally stock form. Im glad these bikes have stayed the same for so many years, dont fix it if its not broken.

When I bought my new 95 DR 350, they were flying off dealer floors. Aftermarket exploded! The first day, I swapped 4 gallon tank, tires, fenders, installed handlebar and handguards, and took my street legal bike anywhere I wanted. Thousands of miles of national forest trails were mine to explore every weekend!
The 350 literally created the money to build the 650, which was not a great seller.

The DR650 and it's community is so similar to the TW200. For all the same reasons. They are both internationally ubiquitous. If you break either on a ride through Mongolia, the parts can be found sitting next to each other on the shelf of a shack in the middle of nowhere. Great bikes for what they are and do.

I have a 2007 from a friend who bought it brand new. I acquired it around 2010 when he decided to replace it with a truck. It has been stone reliable and I have even used it in three dual-sport rides including the hero sections. It's a great adventure bike. I also own many other bikes (KTM450EXC, WR250R, Honda CRF250X, RE Himalayan, 650 Versys, Hodaka Ace 100, Three Pentons, RZ350, etc etc.) But the DR always makes me smile and it's fast enough to use for highway trips in some comfort with soft bags and a small windshield. It's a keeper but I do need better suspension. I guess the KTM spoiled me for off road fun.

I bought my first dual sport in 1993, and was hooked. Since then, I’ve owned about a dozen dual-sports and currently own 5 bikes, but for some reason, my ‘07 DR650 is still my favorite and I’m not sure why. It just makes me giggle and smile every time I ride it. I can't think of a better "does it all" kind of bike. While I've added some farkles to it for ergonomics, storage, etc. I commend Suzuki on getting it right the first time and sticking with it. I've always wanted one of these, but I never had enough money saved up.
I found a 2000 Honda Shadow Sabre 1100cc with 28, 481 miles on it on Facebook Marketplace for $1,700, and after looking around for something smaller, I bought it because all the smaller bikes were much more expensive. I'm sure glad it worked out that way, because now that I'm used to the weight and power (I'm 75 and weigh 115 pounds, while the bike weighs almost 600) I'm loving it, and with 10 months of practicing figure 8s and doing slalom in an empty parking lot after my daily 19-mile ride, it feels just right.
After buying a helmet, complete body armor, adding crash bars, handlebar and front fork windshields, and changing all the fluids and rear tire, I figure the total cost, over time, at about $2,500.

Don't forget the DRZ400 community. Pretty much use the find and replace option and replace DR650 with DRZ400 and the video would be the same story.

I would like to see a study on the effect of flywheel weight on performance. People talk a lot about horsepower and torque but those both come from the energy of combustion that is happening right now. Flywheels store that energy for future use. Are heavy flywheels the reason the Himalayan performs far better than the horsepower and torque numbers would indicate? If so, what can we learn from that and is there a way to take advantage of it when building an engine? People used to shave flywheels to allow the engine to rev quicker - what about increasing flywheel mass to make a bike even more tractable? Is it possible to increase the flywheel mass of something like a DR650?

Was a sad day here in Australia when strict government policies ended the import of the DR650. Still available on the used marked, but just like Holden Commodore, they will be an icon, and a thing of the past.

Jet kit, airbox mod, slip on, 14tooth front sprocket. That’s all you need. It rips. On and off road.

Some context about the legend at around 4:22
"Leray built a desert motorcycle out of the parts of a broken-down Citroën 2CV in 1993, while on a solo trip in Morocco. His car broke down in the middle of the Sahara when he accidentally hit a rock which damaged his car's chassis. He was stranded twenty miles from the nearest settlement, with only enough food and water to last ten days. To survive, Leray created a motorcycle out of parts of his broken-down car twelve days later. When the police finally caught up with him, a heavy fine was levied against him because the registration did not match the vehicle."

I bought an '06 for $2300. It's been a great bike so far and I haven't even really done anything to it. I don't know why people say big thumpers are slow. Seems plenty fast to me.

I know a DR bush weapon in Australia ( we call them the pig over here ) thus has a Honda CFR450 L front end and Husky TE 630 rear shock- so suspension and brakes sorted . Plus loads of other stuff done .

Absolutely love my DR and wouldn't trade it up. I've definitely spend more upgrading than I paid for the bike! Still turns head's, still loud af and I still get people coming up and asking me about it. Couldn't ask for a better motorcycle and one that I have not felt I need to upgrade into something newer....well maybe for long highway trips something comfier may be nice.

Bought a used one over the pandemic . basically for trail riding. I have to admit is pretty easy to work on already have done or redone some mods on it, it had a bad air box mod so i found a used one and replaced it m y buddy had new jets for the carb and rebuilt it and now runs like a charm. I would love to see Suzuki try and make a new one with fuel injection like the KLR. because i have multiple bikes (street) the DR tends to be ridden the least but have to admit its a great bike to own

AHH FINALLY❤! For me the DR was the Bike that started it all! Never sold it! KTMS... Triumphs... all came and went. But not my DR. Crashed it twice. Built it up twice. Were now on the second frame. When he showed the clips at the end: I recognised all of them❤😂. In fact I just now came back from a 2000km ride through germany. I love it. Its the best bike ever (except all the things that are wrong with it❤)

Ryan, you're not supposed to be spying on our DR mod addiction.
Found the Cross Training Adventure channel 10 years ago and ended up buying a new 2016 DR650 with the intention of immediately ordering a ton of stuff from Pro Cycle, Warp 9 and Cogent.
"This is my DR650. There are many like it, but this one is mine." pretty much says it all.

you know, I have owned and ridden many motorcycles and the one I keep? The DR 650. I have the most joy riding this machine and there are faster, more nimble machines but the DR is the best motorcycle ever built. My .02 but hey - why not?

back in the 90s (back when cars were simple) my dad told me; "when you're ready to buy a car, buy a Ford because any garage anywhere in the world can fix it"
I guess I now know what the motorcycle equivalent of that is

Suzuki definitely did something right with all of their DR line cause they are still making them! It’s to bad the other companies didn’t keep going like that!
I know that Ducati just came out with a new super Moto and yes, they have definitely been advancements with the style of bikes that they have made but Suzuki definitely did something right for sure

I bought most of one from a coworker for $500 a few years ago. It was in pretty bad shape and someone had tried to make a supermoto/street tracker out of it and did a piss poor job. About $4000 worth of mostly aftermarket parts later and I'm having more fun with this thing than I have on any other bike.
